In the first episode of the new year, the boys talk about their first Whiskyfest experience, the absolute debauchery that followed and talk about cask finishing. In this episode, the boys also review Highland Park Cask Strength and if it's worth it's weight in liquid gold. Whisky Advocate's annual WhiskyFest took over the Marriott Marquis in New York City's Times Square Tuesday night, and we'll have some of the highlights along with the sadness. There was a pall in one corner the ballroom as whisky lovers mourned the death of master distiller Dave Pickerell last month along with teams from several of the whiskies he helped create during his long career. We'll talk with one of Dave's protegés, Hillrock Estate's Dylan Strang, about the distillery's plans to move forward using the lessons he and his colleagues learned from their friend and mentor. In our Behind the Label segment, we'll have an interview you can only hear on WhiskyCast as we talk with artist Michael Dillon, the painter who created the one-of-a-kind label for the 1926 Macallan that shattered the world record for a whisky auction last week in London. In the news, we'll have the details of the U.S. Treasury Department's plan to rewrite federal alcohol regulations for the first time in more than three decades - and some of the agency's proposals have craft distillers nervous.

@whiskyfest Here is a quick shot episode on our coverage for WhiskyFest Chicago 2017 WhiskyFest Chicago 2017 @WhiskyFest This is a multiple city festival that has been around for 20 years. Several of our hosts have attended over the years, but this our first review and coverage. It’s well organized. Easy crowd control, easy in/out, good info before and during the event. Great venue. Lots of things you would expect that after such a long time producing such an event. One major distinction in this event are the people. There were lots of master distillers there and some we don’t see out and about that often. Some notables Jimmy and Eddie Russell, Julian Van Winkle, Denny Potter, Paul Hletko, and Brendan Coyle. So if you are into pressing the flesh with the producers, this is a great event to catch them. We spotted several distillers pouring, snapping photos, and we even got in on some of the fan boy crush. The other people were the attendees with not just a massive crowd but such diverse whiskey fans. There were several whiskey clubs. Fans of bourbon, scotch, Japanese whisky, and plenty of newbies. We spent quite a bit of time just taking to the crowd and everyone was having a great time. There was not even a hint of complaints in these conversations. We still shake our head at the door rush to get some of the entire Old Rip Van Winkle lineup including the coveted Pappy 23. We walked calmly to the Beam booth and grabbed Bookers Rye. The VIP pours were great quality and there was time to get most of them in the 1 hour before the general admission. One of the few times we can say the VIP upgrade is worth it. Lots of old, rare, and unicorn blood during the VIP hour. We rarely see an event with the entire Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, Pappy, Hibiki 21, Macallan Edition No. 1 ,and Laphroaig 25 2013. That is a really small list of a room of extraordinary juice flowing. Even the non-VIP offerings were extensive with most of the global spirits companies bringing large portions of their product lines. We even tasted some things that we have never seen. Some here are some products that caught our attention: Hibiki 21 – wow, what a buttery decadent whisky. This is worth every penny and a major best buy. Please bury me in one of these bottles so I can enjoy eternal bliss. Redbreast 21 – we have not covered much Irish whisky on the show yet, and I was already a Redbreast fan, but this moved to a whole new level. Wood, honey, citrus, and quite complex. Aberlour 18 – it’s been awhile and I’ve been working on a couple batches of A’bundah. Don’t forget how good this is. It’s one of the flavor profiles that captured my heart for Scotch and continues to deliver. Some new to us products that were impressive – Connemara Cask, Kelbeggan 18, Few Spirits Flaming Lips Rye, Octomore 7. Brendan from High West had that look of great anticipation all over him of something very cool on the horizon. He reported nice things post acquisition by Constellation, but it was that other thing on his mind that was intriguing. The food was outstanding, although there is not really enough time or room to enjoy it. Our SS&S Fest Report Card Ratings 1-5 with 5 being the best Venue – 5 Whisk(e)y – 5 Food – 5 Audience – 5 Overall – 5 Would we come back – Yes Tips for next year: Grab something to eat and hydrate well before the event, it’s a bit of a sprint. Take the time to meet a fellow whiskey fan while you are in the short lines. Stay at the hotel venue the night of the event. Coat check the bag they give you.

They’re organizing and hosting The Good Festival, a biennial party that celebrates one-of-a-kind local music and food initiatives. It inspires New Yorkers to make, cook, and do right in their own kitchens and backyards. Throughout the night, bands will perform as artisans and urban gardeners share their skills between bands’ sets. It’s a celebration music. dance and food. The festival is taking place October 11th at Friends & Lovers. In the second half of the show, Darin talks to Lew Bryson, Managing Editor of Whisky Advocate. They discuss the widespread knowledge of beer and the over-saturation of breweries all over the country. WhiskyFest is a festival that Whisky Advocate organizes. It offers people the opportunity to taste from a selection of more than 300 whiskies from around the world; many of them rare and exclusive. On October 29th ,WhiskyFest is going to celebrate it’s 40th year. Musical guest for the day is Toy Cities, a post punk Indie Rock band based in Brooklyn. I think the people that go for the bands, generally don’t know their interest about being more sustainable and this is a really nice introduction to them. In the news, Hurricane Sandy had an impact on the whisky community, trapping a number of distillery representatives in New York as their post-WhiskyFest flights were cancelled. We'll also get an update on the latest Bonhams auction in New York, and in non-hurricane news, word of new whiskies from Glenmorangie, Balblair, Buffalo Trace, and more!

A double feature this week...the latest issue of Malt Advocate is out. John Hansell will give us a preview, and we'll also talk about next month's WhiskyFest in San Francisco. Mikael Mossvall of Mackmyra will give us an update on Sweden's only single malt whisky and plans to export it to the U.S. in 2010. In the news, Jack and Jim pull out of NASCAR, new whiskies from Compass Box, Benromach, and Douglas Laing, and tasting notes for 10 different whiskies!

Malt Advocate Magazine handed out its annual awards at this week's WhiskyFest New York, and you'll hear from some of this year's winners in this episode, including Jim Rutledge of Distillery of the Year Winner Four Roses and two of the three Lifetime Achievement Award winners: Kenny Gray of Oban and veteran Buffalo Trace warehouse manager Ronnie Eddens (next time, we'll hear from Isle of Jura's Willie Tait). In the news, the latest on Springbank, The Macallan gets artsy, and Jeff Arnett's having a ball as the new master distiller at Jack Daniels.

It's a good time to be in the whisky business. Scotch whisky exports are growing by 4 percent a year, and added up to $5 billion last year worldwide. We'll talk with Scotch Whisky Association chief executive Gavin Hewitt about the political and business issues facing the industry. Jim Cryle "retired" this year as Master Distiller at The Glenlivet, but somehow he seems just as busy as ever after 40 years of making Scotch. My conversation with Jim includes everything from his early days in distilling to what it's like to walk into a warehouse first thing in the morning, as well as his choice for that final dram. In the news, Bruichladdich's bottling Port Charlotte PC5, the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre gets a new name, and new whiskies are on tap -- so to speak -- for WhiskyFest in New York next week.
