Buckle up, you beautiful degenerates, because the Whiskey Bros are back with Episode 121, and we've got Ty Rambo in the house—again! That's right, the man who drinks like a Viking and wakes up at 5 AM like he's got a meeting with Thor himself. This episode is a masterclass in why you should never trust your taste buds when they're blindfolded (or drunk). We kicked things off by revisiting our blind whiskey tasting, and oh boy, did it expose some truths. Old Rip Van Winkle? More like Old Rip-Off Winkle. Who knew the fancy bottle could taste like a $500 disappointment? Meanwhile, Evan Williams White Label came in like a champ, proving that sometimes the underdog is just better at playing the game. Cognitive bias? More like cognitive "bias against cheap whiskey."But we didn't stop there. We dove into the deep end of life's big questions: Why does God let bad things happen? Is free will just an excuse for bad decisions? And why are beauty pageants still a thing? (Spoiler: they're not, they're just an excuse for fake tans and incoherent answers about maps.)Locally, we're still salty about Decatur's parking lot drama. Paid parking? In our town? We suggested a hayride from the cigar lounge to the square—because why walk when you can hayride, right? And let's not forget the pinnacle of human achievement: automatic toilet seats. Why haven't we cracked this code yet? We're out here with self-driving cars, but we can't get a toilet that doesn't leave us doing the limbo every time we sit down. (Pro tip: don't pee on your hands, folks—it's a slippery slope.)So, grab your favorite pour—maybe something from Buffalo Trace if you're feeling fancy, or Evan Williams if you're feeling smart—and join us for a wild ride through whiskey, wisdom, and way too many toilet jokes.#WhiskeyBros #TyRambo #EvanWilliams #OldRipVanWinkle #PappyVanWinkle #VeryOldStNick #Weller #BuffaloTrace #EagleRare #Bookers #WildTurkey #WhistlePig #FatherTimeBourbon #RedRiverDistillery #CognitiveBias #BlindTasting #DecaturParking #ToiletTechnology #UnprofessionalPodcast #WhiskeyHumor #HangoverFree

Pappy 13:When first approached by Buffalo Trace, Julian III was honored, but not immediately interested. He had ample bourbon aging, but the concern was for future reserves, since by this time, bourbon was increasing in popularity. Buffalo Trace bought the W.L. Weller label in 1999 and had been making the bourbon with nearly the same recipe as Pappy's. The transition was easy. As of May 2002, Buffalo Trace has produced the Van Winkle bourbons, using Pappy's exact recipe. This change allows Old Rip Van Winkle to maintain their strict quality standards while producing more barrels for future enjoyment.Michter's 10: The 10 Year Rye expression reflects the exceptional results of uncompromising craftsmanship and Kentucky's unrivaled climate for aging outstanding whiskey. Often much older than the age statement on the label, only a select few barrels age with the elegance required for inclusion in these highly limited releases.
In this week's episode of The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief heads to Frankfort, Kentucky, for an intriguing conversation with Toby Curtsinger, a central figure in Netflix's series “Heist”, specifically in the episodes titled “Bourbon King” (episodes 5 and 6). The discussion dives deep into the infamous "Pappygate," where Toby recounts his involvement in the black market of bourbon. He shares how he illicitly acquired and distributed bottles and barrels of whiskey from notable distilleries like Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey, leading to his eventual legal troubles. Toby reflects on the regret he feels for putting his family through such a difficult period and how he has been working to rebuild his life since. He also talks about his path to redemption and his new role as "The Bourbon King," where he shares his story through whiskey tastings and tours, offering a unique perspective on the world of bourbon. Big Chief kicks off the show by enjoying a pour of Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year, which at 107 proof, stands out as his favorite expression of the highly sought-after bourbon, describing it as a "cinnamon bomb." The episode wraps up with Big Chief savoring a glass of Russell's Reserve 10 Year from Wild Turkey, a highly affordable and flavorful bourbon with a pronounced Kentucky rye spice, even at 90 proof. This episode of The Whiskey Trip not only explores a significant event in the bourbon world but also showcases how one man's missteps contributed to the boom of bourbon's popularity. Cheers to an unforgettable ride!

Preston is the fourth generation member of the Van Winkle family to enter into the bourbon business. He is the great grandson of iconic bourbon maker Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr. and son of current Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery President, Julian P. Van Winkle, III. Preston grew up in the post Stitzel-Weller era of Van Winkle bourbon production, exploring his father's bottling hall and barrel warehouse in Lawrenceburg, KY, occasionally helping with the bottling and labeling. Preston graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2001 and immediately started working for his father. Initially he split time between the Louisville office and the Lawrenceburg bottling facility where he often processed bourbon for bottling and ran the bottling line as Julian had for the previous 20 plus years. In 2002 the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery partnered with the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, KY, freeing up Julian and Preston from production duties enabling them to focus on the sales and marketing of the brands. Preston assumed the role of Marketing Manager for Old Rip Van Winkle and has worked since then to help manage and market the Van Winkle brands.

In this episode, Matt tastes Old Rip Van Winkle 10yr. Tasting Notes A 10yr old, wheated bourbon produced with the Weller recipe and hand-selected by the Van Winkle family. I think it's the BEST one of the bunch because it's 107 proof, it's not overoaked as some of the other expressions can be from time to time, and it's not a trophy like the others. On the nose, boiling toffee, tea tree oil, and juicy pear, very concentrated. On the palate, leather chair and oak spice, orchard fruit on the mid-palate, long spicy finish. You can chew on this one for days!
Julian P. Van Winkle III is the third generation Van Winkle to produce bourbon whiskey in Kentucky. He joined his father, Julian Jr., in 1977. At that time, Old Rip Van Winkle produced only two labels of its wheated bourbon whiskey. They were a 10-year 90 and 107 proof Old Rip Van Winkle. Since then Julian has added 12-year, 15-year, 20-year and 23-year bourbon labels to the Van Winkle selection of premium bourbon whiskeys. He also has added a 13-year premium rye whiskey to the whiskey portfolio. All of these whiskeys have received ratings in the 90s by the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago, with the 20-year receiving a 99 rating. Julian operated the company by himself after his father's death in 1981. He was joined by his son Preston in June 2001, the fourth generation of Van Winkles to venture into the whiskey business. In 2002, the Van Winkles entered into a joint venture with Buffalo Trace Distillery in Franklin County, Frankfort, Ky. All of the Van Winkle's whiskey production now takes place at Buffalo Trace Distillery under the same strict guidelines the family has always followed. In January 2009, Julian was honored to be nominated as a Fellow at the Southern Foodways Alliance annual fundraiser at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee. The following year, Julian was inducted into the Fellowship of Southern Farmers, Artisans and Chefs. This is a tremendous honor as the group members are some of the most talented people around. In 2011, Julian received the coveted James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional, becoming the first James Beard winner from Kentucky.

(27:00) - Rod started his business by finding a place to serve others! Start by serving others and you will find a way to grow. (30:00) - The first crisis for the industry was Prohibition from 1920 to 1933. The second crisis in American bourbon history came during the 1960s as the younger generations turned away from their parent's whiskey and turned to clear liquors. When Sean Connery as James Bond asks for a martini "shaken not stirred," this marks the cultural shift. (33:00) - The Heaven Hill Distillery fire shows how this industry, with many generations of family-owned businesses, are connected, and help each other in good times and bad. He was the first celebrity endorser of a product and never got paid for it. He had a favorite drink and a secret way to drink it. Rod gives the story of Frank Sinatra. Book Recommendation - "The Way You Wear Your Hat: Frank Sinatra and The Lost Art of Livin" (50:00) - Bourbon does not need to be made in Kentucky but must be made in the United States to be called a Bourbon. The weather, water, and barrel, all impact the bourbon as much as the ingredients. Bottle and Bond - passed in 1897 was the first consumer protection act in America to protect citizens from the "snake oil salesmen" in the old west selling poor-grade alcohols, tonics, and elixirs that were killing people. (1:07:00) - What has happened to give the industry a resurgence today? American Whiskey is booming today. Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery Weller, Old Fitzgerald, and Makers Mark were brands sold off to other distillers. The family held on to one brand "Old Rip Van Winkle." The Japanese market and investment also helped save the American bourbon market. "Wheated Bourbons" are softer and smoother. This week, Tony and Fingers reviewed Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. They paired it with the La Flor Dominicana Reserva Especial Figurado cigar. Tony Katz and Fingers Malloy (http://eatdrinksmokeshow.com) host Eat! Drink! Smoke! (http://facebook.com/eatdrinksmoke) recorded live at Blend Bar Cigar (http://blendbarcigar.com) in Indianapolis, IN. Tony just celebrated his birthday. As a gift, one of his friends gave him a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. That's a good friend. This bourbon retails for around $70. But it would be a small miracle to find it at a store for that price. On the secondary market, bottles of Old Rip Van Winkle sell for $1500. Tony didn't sell, he shared it with his friends. Jeff Clark from the Indiana Liquor Group and Brian Lerman of Blend Bar Cigar in Indianapolis helped Tony and Fingers review this rare bourbon. What makes it so unique? Is it worth the price? Should you order it at your favorite lounge? The gentlemen break it all down, and much more on episode 198 of Eat! Drink! Smoke! Follow Eat! Drink! Smoke! On this episode of The Fred Minnick Show, legendary ESPN sports writer Wright Thompson hangs out with Fred to talk about Thompson's new book, Pappyland: A Story of Family, Fine Bourbon, and the Things That Last. Suffice to say, if you're into the Pappy Van Winkle legacy, you're going to love this inside look into Thompson's relationship with Julian Van Winkle, who he shadowed for parts of three years to learn about what makes the Van Winkle family tick. Wright and Fred talk about the book, bourbon and, most importantly, the Van Winkle way. No whiskey tasting this time - Fred was sipping coffee, as it was a morning interview - but there was plenty of whiskey talk. EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and Wright cover a number of topics, such as: "It was a story about writing a book as much as anything," Thompson tells Fred about his relationship with Julian Van Winkle and the process of getting to know him and the family's history while writing Pappyland. He notes that much of the story he learned mirrored many things that were happening in his own life at the time. He also notes that he drank "a lot of good whiskey" during the research process and was able to reflect his tastes off Julian Van Winkle's, noting that Julian was "unsentimental" toward much of the bourbon they tasted. And for those who don't believe in the scarcity of Pappy Van Winkle and Old Rip Van Winkle products, Thompson says they'd better change their thinking. Because the scarcity is real. Speaking of Julian, Thompson tells Fred, "I certainly thought, 'Well, this guy's got a basement full of this stuff,' and, ah, he doesn't. ... That was really interesting to see, that the scarcity is real." That said, before loaning much of it to Frazier History Museum, Julian had a huge stash of priceless whiskey hiding in his basement. Fred and Wright also talk about tasting some of the white dog from the original Stitzel-Weller Distillery and finding it to be even smoother than some aged bourbons. Thompson says Julian's goal is to create bourbon that is "the closest approximation" to Stitzel-Weller whiskey. "It was interesting to me to see how much the process for him is dancing with the ghost of that." He talks about events coming up through which bourbon fans can win Van Winkle products (get involved at Wright's Website. They talk about how fake Pappy often is sent back to Buffalo Trace, and Julian often tastes (and likes!) the faked bourbon, to see what people are passing of as Pappy Van Winkle. On how covering sports is similar to covering bourbon, Wright says, "One, people are very, very passionate about it and have long, deeply felt opinions." He talks about how bourbon, in a way, embodies the American spirit. Ultimately, the book is about why people make bourbon and why so many people want to drink it, he says. "I hope in my heart of hearts that maybe I have articulated something that a lot of people like you and I ... have felt but never fully articulated. I think people will say, 'That's me on the page. Hopefully.'" Fred offers that being a fan of a sports team that isn't successful is almost the opposite of one's love of whiskey: "Bourbon is largely joy; being a fan is mostly heartache." Thompson buys bourbon to drink, not to collect or re-sell: "I would love a world in which everybody's decanter whiskey was Old Rip. For $60 a bottle." And Wright teaches us all how to make a VanHattan (good luck finding the ingredients, though). QUOTABLES "I don't know if I have a complex enough whiskey palate to separate my desire for something to be great from it's actual greatness," Thompson says, speaking of his relationship with whiskey. The Bourbon Lens version of a Christmas Gift Guide. Gift guides can be found everywhere on the internet, but this podcast episode is a fresh spin on that idea. We take several “Whiskey Friend” stereotypes and suggest bottles of whiskey for each. Some of these gifts might be serious, most are sarcastic, but you’re sure to find the perfect whiskey bottle to gift your friends. Here’s the listing of those typical “Whiskey Friend” stereotypes: Whiskey Tater The guy who calls Old RIP Van Winkle, "Pappy" The guy who refers to all Whiskey as Bourbon The guy who drinks Bourbon and Coke on the rocks The guy who self proclaimed as “The Wheater” The guy who just started buying bourbon The guy who claims all bourbon is made in Kentucky Be sure to let us know if we missed any stereotypes or if there are any whiskies we may have overlooked in our episode. First, Will lets Greeze try the Heaven Hill 27 Year Old bourbon, and Greeze throws some Coke in it. Then, they bring back the Bourbon & Coke showdown from 2 years ago. This time, they only use high end bourbons: Elijah Craig 18, Old Rip Van Winkle, Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 130th Anniversary, and 2018 George T. Stagg. Then, after the 15, they try Michter's US*1 Sour Mash whiskey and give it the buy, bar, pass treatment. Thanks to our sponsors: Mountain Valley Spring Water: Good water is key to whiskey tasting. First, Greeze thinks he can stump Will by blinding him with George T. Stagg, William Larue Weller, and Lincoln Road's Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select. He was wrong, for obvious reasons. Then we have some delightful samples from our buddy Jon (@j5bourbons on Instagram). It includes JPS 25, Dusty 8yr 101 Wild Turkey, Old Rip Van Winkle from the 70s, and some Eagle Rare. Then, after the 15, we try "Not Your Father's Bourbon" that was sent by our listener Matt. It receives the buy, bar, pass treatment. Bex and Cou sip on some Old Rip Van Winkle. But they realize it is actually Smirnoff lying about being whiskey while they discuss the Netflix Original Documentary "The Rachel Divide"
Pretty straight forward episode, folks. First, Will and the Greeze do a vertical of Blanton's Special Reserve (Green), Standard (Tan), Gold, and Straight from the Barrel sent to them by listener Chuck. And then on the 15, we try Corazon Anejo Tequila aged in Old Rip Van Winkle Bourbon Barrels... because we can! And as a bonus, Will makes Greeze try another rum: Papa's Pilar.

The recipe a bourbon starts with during fermentation is the DNA of the whisky, but it's not everything that goes into the whisky. We discuss the most famous bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle, and the other whiskies that share its recipe and have likewise enjoyed fame and inflated prices! In this episode, we drink Old Rip Van Winkle, William Larue Weller, and Weller Antique 107.

It's Pappy season, and although we aren't lucky enough to say we've got our hands on one this year (Nashville's rough y'all), we relied on some kindness and generosity to put up an Old Rip Van Winkle against two Weller Antique 107 store picks, one that was non-chill filtered and one that was chill filtered, in a blind tasting in an attempt to see if there's really that much of a difference besides a few extra years of aging. Cheers!

@whiskyfest Here is a quick shot episode on our coverage for WhiskyFest Chicago 2017 WhiskyFest Chicago 2017 @WhiskyFest This is a multiple city festival that has been around for 20 years. Several of our hosts have attended over the years, but this our first review and coverage. It’s well organized. Easy crowd control, easy in/out, good info before and during the event. Great venue. Lots of things you would expect that after such a long time producing such an event. One major distinction in this event are the people. There were lots of master distillers there and some we don’t see out and about that often. Some notables Jimmy and Eddie Russell, Julian Van Winkle, Denny Potter, Paul Hletko, and Brendan Coyle. So if you are into pressing the flesh with the producers, this is a great event to catch them. We spotted several distillers pouring, snapping photos, and we even got in on some of the fan boy crush. The other people were the attendees with not just a massive crowd but such diverse whiskey fans. There were several whiskey clubs. Fans of bourbon, scotch, Japanese whisky, and plenty of newbies. We spent quite a bit of time just taking to the crowd and everyone was having a great time. There was not even a hint of complaints in these conversations. We still shake our head at the door rush to get some of the entire Old Rip Van Winkle lineup including the coveted Pappy 23. We walked calmly to the Beam booth and grabbed Bookers Rye. The VIP pours were great quality and there was time to get most of them in the 1 hour before the general admission. One of the few times we can say the VIP upgrade is worth it. Lots of old, rare, and unicorn blood during the VIP hour. We rarely see an event with the entire Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, Pappy, Hibiki 21, Macallan Edition No. 1 ,and Laphroaig 25 2013. That is a really small list of a room of extraordinary juice flowing. Even the non-VIP offerings were extensive with most of the global spirits companies bringing large portions of their product lines. We even tasted some things that we have never seen. Some here are some products that caught our attention: Hibiki 21 – wow, what a buttery decadent whisky. This is worth every penny and a major best buy. Please bury me in one of these bottles so I can enjoy eternal bliss. Redbreast 21 – we have not covered much Irish whisky on the show yet, and I was already a Redbreast fan, but this moved to a whole new level. Wood, honey, citrus, and quite complex. Aberlour 18 – it’s been awhile and I’ve been working on a couple batches of A’bundah. Don’t forget how good this is. It’s one of the flavor profiles that captured my heart for Scotch and continues to deliver. Some new to us products that were impressive – Connemara Cask, Kelbeggan 18, Few Spirits Flaming Lips Rye, Octomore 7. Brendan from High West had that look of great anticipation all over him of something very cool on the horizon. He reported nice things post acquisition by Constellation, but it was that other thing on his mind that was intriguing. The food was outstanding, although there is not really enough time or room to enjoy it. Our SS&S Fest Report Card Ratings 1-5 with 5 being the best Venue – 5 Whisk(e)y – 5 Food – 5 Audience – 5 Overall – 5 Would we come back – Yes Tips for next year: Grab something to eat and hydrate well before the event, it’s a bit of a sprint. Take the time to meet a fellow whiskey fan while you are in the short lines. Stay at the hotel venue the night of the event. Coat check the bag they give you.
