120: How Moët Hennessy Builds Demand – with SVP Carlos Zepeda - Business of Drinks

Business of Drinks

What makes a drinks brand truly desirable — and how do you know when it's ready to scale? In this episode of Business of Drinks, we talk with Carlos Zepeda, SVP of Strategy & Marketing - Wine & Spirits at Moët Hennessy USA. Carlos helps shape growth strategy across a portfolio that includes Belvedere, Glenmorangie, Ardbeg, Whispering Angel, Hennessy, Veuve Clicquot, Dom Pérignon, Krug, and Moët & Chandon.Carlos brings a CPG-trained lens to luxury wine and spirits, starting with what he calls “demand moments”: the role a brand plays in the consumer's life. Is it built for a country club, a dinner party, a milestone celebration, a poolside bar, a fine-dining account, or a grocery delivery add-on? That answer shapes everything — distribution, content, partnerships, pricing, and activation. The big takeaway is that desirability comes before scale. Carlos defines desirability as both emotional and behavioral. Consumers have to want the brand, feel proud to be associated with it, talk about it, buy it, and refer it to others. And there's an easy business test to measure desirability: If you have velocity without heavy discounting, that's a sign of real demand. If you need promotions to move inventory, that tells you something else.We also dig into selective distribution, and why “being available” does not mean being everywhere. Carlos explains how a brand like Whispering Angel has to show up where consumers expect it — from restaurants and hotels to Instacart and Uber Eats — while a brand like Dom Pérignon requires a much more surgical account strategy.Plus, Carlos shares how luxury experiential marketing is changing, why the old influencer-driven FOMO model feels tired, how brands should think about creator-led content, and how he uses AI as a practical “thinking partner” while keeping human judgment at the center. For emerging brands, his advice is blunt: Less is more. Pick fewer markets, fewer programs, and fewer channels. Being small is not the problem. Acting too big too soon is.This episode is a deep dive into how drinks brands earn relevance: By understanding the occasion, building desirability, choosing the right accounts, listening for consumer signals, and staying focused on where growth is really coming from. For the latest updates, follow us:Business of Drinks website (sign up for our newsletter!)Business of Drinks YouTubeBusiness of Drinks LinkedInInstagram @bizofdrinksErica Duecy, co-host: Erica Duecy is founder and co-host of Business of Drinks and one of the drinks industry's most accomplished digital and content strategists. For this fantastic Friday episode, The Boys pair up a new Blanco that they tasted recently at an event with a Single Malt that Matt was able to pull out of his sense-memory. Ass-signment completed! Did he nail the flavors? Did he accurately recall the notes to nail the QuickSip™? You will have to listen to find out. The ending reveals a little whiskey news, the middle tangents at a fairly regular level, and the tasting notes are as elaborate as always.  While you listen, you could give us a five star rating, leave a review, tell a friend, open a bottle of tequila and open a bottle of whiskey, sip along and Make It A Happy Friday™!

► Glenmorangie Brennereibesichtigung: https://youtu.be/bIzI32xPsig ► Glenmorangie Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0c4kGdVapNRuTwFeAZpAGc2lQU7-nbIH ► Abonnieren: http://www.youtube.com/user/thewhiskystore?sub_confirmation=1 ► Whisky.de Social Media ○ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@whiskyde ○ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whisky.de/ ○ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Whisky.de/ ○ Twitter / X: https://www.threads.net/@whisky.de ○ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@whisky.de ○ Telegram: https://t.me/whisky_de ► Podcast: https://www.whisky.de/shop/newsletter/#podcast ► Merch: https://whiskyde-fanartikel.creator-spring.com/ Mehr Informationen finden Sie in unserem Shop auf Whisky.de/shop

The_Whiskey Shaman

The whiskey world is changing—and not quietly. In this episode, we dive headfirst into two forces shaping the future of the industry. First, the growing push to legalize home distilling in the U.S., and what that could mean for innovation, craftsmanship, and the next generation of distillers. Is this a return to whiskey's roots…or a disruption the big players aren't ready for? Then, we turn to the corporate side of the fight. Rumors are swirling around Sazerac Company potentially setting its sights on Brown-Forman—a move that could reshape the power structure of the whiskey world overnight. What would this mean for legacy brands, market competition, and the soul of the industry? From grassroots distillers to billion-dollar boardrooms, this episode breaks down the tension between tradition, control, and the freedom to create. The future of whiskey isn't set in stone—and the fight is already underway.Patreon.com/offtopicwhiskeyBadmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==The "fight for the future of whiskey" is not a single battle, but a complex intersection of market corrections, regulatory disputes, and shifting consumer values. As of 2026, the industry is transitioning from a decade of "hyper-expansion" to an era defined by maturity and transparency.1.The "Glut" vs. Disciplined ProductionA major internal conflict exists between maintaining high prices and managing a massive surplus of aging stock.Inventory Crisis: In Kentucky alone, aging barrels have reached approximately 16.1 million, a potential oversupply of 300% compared to current demand.Strategic Pauses: To prevent a total market collapse, major producers like Jim Beam and Diageo (owners of Balcones and George Dickel) have suspended or slowed production through 2026 to let inventories normalize.De-premiumization: Experts note a reversal of the two-decade "trading up" trend. Consumers are becoming skeptical of $1,000+ "vanity bottles" and are returning to the $30–$70 price range for better value.2. The Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) ShowdownA significant legal and regulatory fight is occurring over how whiskey reaches the consumer.Three-Tier System: Many state legislatures are fighting to protect the traditional three-tier system (producer → wholesaler → retailer) to secure tax revenue and maintain oversight.Shipping Rights: Craft distillers are lobbying for the right to ship directly to doorsteps, arguing it is essential for survival in a market where large distributors often favor legacy brands.3. Global Trade and Retaliatory TariffsWhiskey has become a primary weapon in international trade disputes, leading to what some call a "Tariff War".Retaliatory Barriers: Major markets like Canada and the EU have imposed significant tariffs on American whiskey. In 2025, some Canadian retailers even pulled American bottles from shelves entirely, replacing them with "Buy Canadian" signs. The Pivot to India: With Western markets slowing, the industry is fighting for access to India, the world's largest whiskey market by volume. Producers are lobbying for lower tariffs (currently at 100% for U.S. bourbon) to tap into India's massive rising middle class.4. Sustainability and AuthenticityA cultural "fight" is emerging as brands compete for younger, "mindful" drinkers.Terroir & Ingredients: Distillers like Westland are focusing on Pacific Northwest peat and heirloom grains to prove provenance.Eco-Mandates: Sustainability is becoming a market requirement rather than a choice. Brands like Bruichladdich and Glenmorangie are leading shifts toward renewable energy and water conservation to attract eco-conscious Gen Z and Millennial buyers.Transparency: The "new luxury" is information. Brands that publish mash bills, fermentation choices, and barrel details are winning loyalty over those relying on marketing "hype".

After opening the decade's story last week, they turn their attention to the moment single malts truly hit their stride. This time, they dig into how Scotch stepped beyond blends, with Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Macallan, and Glenmorangie leading the charge. From smarter storytelling to bottles that finally demanded space on the shelf, Sarah and Kurt explore how these brands shaped a new era of whisky marketing—and set the tone for the decade to come.

In this episode of The Embellish Pod, we embark on a journey through the diverse and storied world of Highland whiskeys. If you stumbled upon this episode by chance, don't forget to hit the subscribe button to stay updated with our latest content. You can find video versions of this podcast on YouTube and all my links on Instagram and TikTok at @embellishpod. For more details, visit my website at www.embellishpod.com Exploring the Highlands Welcome to the Highlands, Scotland's largest and most diverse whiskey region. This vast area, encompassing everything north of an imaginary line from Greenock to Dundee (excluding Speyside), is known for its dramatic geographical contrasts and equally diverse whiskey styles. The region is divided into distinct sub-areas: Northern Highlands, Southern Highlands, East Highlands, and Western Highlands, each contributing unique characteristics to their whiskeys. Tasting Session During this episode, we feature four different Highland whiskeys: Dalmore 12 Year Old Dalmore 18 Year Old Glendronach Allardyce 18 Year Old Glenmorangie Signet Distillery Highlights Dalmore: Founded in 1839, Dalmore is known for its iconic stag logo and the expertise of Master Distiller Richard Patterson. The distillery uses innovative cask finishing techniques and water from the River Averon, creating whiskeys with rich, luxurious character. Glendronach: Founded in 1826, Glendronach is famous for its exclusive use of Spanish oak casks for maturation. The distillery's commitment to sherry cask maturation and traditional production methods creates consistent quality in their releases. Glenmorangie: Founded in 1843, Glenmorangie is known for its tall pot stills and innovative wood finishing techniques. The distillery's most distinctive expression, Signet, uses chocolate malt to create unprecedented flavors in Scottish whiskey. Highland Park: Founded in 1798, Highland Park embraces its Viking heritage and unique environmental conditions on Orkney. The distillery's traditional floor maltings and use of Orcadian peat create a signature balance between smoke and sweetness. Glassware and Tasting Notes We use the Glendale Whiskey Nosing Glass for this tasting session. This tulip-shaped glass enhances the nosing experience, revealing subtle aromatics and helping to distinguish between different Highland characteristics. However, it may not be ideal for all whiskey styles, and personal preference plays a significant role in the tasting experience. This episode showcases the remarkable range of Highland whiskeys, from traditional to innovative expressions. Each whiskey maintains its Highland identity while exploring different possibilities. The diversity within the Highland region makes it Scotland's most fascinating whiskey area. Join us in the next episode as we travel to Islay, where peat smoke and Atlantic storms create some of the world's most intense and distinctive whiskeys.

In this globe-trotting episode of The Bourbon Road, hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter are joined once again by Rob Carter, one-third of the “Maltmigos,” for a single malt tasting session that travels from the Himalayas to the Highlands. Though Amzie couldn't make the show this time, the malt trio powers forward from their tasting post at The Corner Rickhouse in Frankfort, Kentucky. The spotlight this episode is on Royal Tiger Single Malt, a double-cask expression from Ocean King Distillers in Goa, India. Distilled by Craig Enriques, this single malt is made from six-row Himalayan barley and aged first in new ex-bourbon casks before being re-casked for a second maturation. The result? A spirit layered with creamy vanilla, overripe pear, honey-drizzled bread, and a whisper of spice from the oak—delightfully balanced and surprisingly sweet for fans of traditional single malt. Jim, Todd, and Rob dig into the expression's structure, remarking on its buttercream and vanilla-laced nose, light body, and smooth, sweet finish. They note that while the whiskey skews a little sweeter than their usual fare, it offers a refreshing break from the bolder, high-proof bourbons they typically favor. For a $49 bottle, the consensus was unanimous: this Indian single malt punches well above its weight. Other expressions tasted during the show are Ice Cream from Glenmorangie, Loch Lemond and Glen Scotia. As they sip, the conversation ranges from distilling techniques to global whiskey culture. The team highlights India's rapidly growing single malt scene and how regional water sources, climate, and local grain are contributing to distinct profiles that rival the best from Scotland or the U.S. They also muse about the potential for single malt cream liqueurs and whether peated versions could offer a new kind of dessert dram. Beyond the glass, the hosts discuss upcoming barrel picks in western Kentucky, share travel plans to Fort Campbell and Clarksville, and reflect on the value of tasting outside your comfort zone. For Rob, this was a first-time single malt deep dive; for listeners, it's a lesson in palate exploration, regional nuance, and just plain good company. So whether you're a bourbon loyalist or a curious malthead, this episode is an open invitation to explore a world of flavor—no passport required. Someone has to say it: Expo West isn't for everyone. One host makes a case on why some folks should skip the Super Bowl of CPG… while three others try to prove them wrong. We also sit down with Trevor Burns of Leisure Hydration, an emerging brand of electrolyte drinks making waves in Southern California. Show notes: 0:25: A Better Name. Han Jones & His Scotch. Press Pass Rescinded. Killer Soda. Spicy Pod & Sauces. – The hosts recall a past edition of BevNET's New Beverage Showdown, before Ray questions an alignment between a legacy Scotch brand and a popular, if aging, movie star. Then the sh_t hits the fan. The hosts engage in a debate about the value of some early-stage founders attending and/or exhibiting Expo West, until everyone agrees on one thing. John and Mike crack open cans of Liquid Death's new soda-flavored sparkling waters, Ray highlights a “sacred” drink brand, Jacqui gets spicy and everything starts to feel saucy. 29:13: Interview: Trevor Burns, Head of Sales, Leisure Hydration – Launched in 2022, Leisure Hydration markets “electrolyte refreshers” that are infused with vitamins, minerals and adaptogens. Packaged in 16 oz. cans, and available in three flavors, the drinks are distributed throughout California, including at Bristol Farms, Gelsons and Erewhon stores, and also has a presence in several other parts of the U.S., including Texas and the Pacific Northwest. At a recent event hosted by Naturally San Diego, Trevor talked about Leisure Hydration's methodical retail strategy, the impact of an adjustment to its brand name and how the company landed a big time partnership at seven major airports. Brands in this episode: Leisure Hydration, Glenmorangie, Glonuts, Maazah, Grounded, Liquid Death, Mate Party, Sacred Bev, PODI Life, Tierra Negra, Cleveland Kitchen, Tari

Today Laura and Kevin dive into a fascinating discussion on the world of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) with Nick Foy, the Founder and CEO of Silverdale Technology who shares his unique perspective on making ERP solutions accessible for businesses of all sizes.First though Laura and Kevin kick things off with a lighthearted chat about Laura's new Walk Car. Then, Nick explains why ERP systems, often overlooked until they're slow or malfunctioning, are critical for businesses. He emphasizes their power in providing quick access to financial and operational insights, enabling better decision-making. For small-to-medium-sized businesses, he advocates for leveraging out-of-the-box ERP solutions and partnering with experienced implementation experts to avoid common pitfalls like over-customization and poor setup. The conversation shifts to leadership, where Nick reflects on how his time at Amazon shaped his philosophy. He shares his approach to creating scalable, tenant-based processes inspired by the tech giant. On a lighter note, Nick, a whisky enthusiast, draws parallels between crafting fine whisky and great ERP solutions, both requiring a long-term vision. He reveals his favorite whisky—Glenmorangie—and touches on his roots in Scotland and journey to the U.S., where he's continued to innovate and inspire in the tech and business space. Give this a listen! You will leave with actionable insights into ERP implementation, process optimization, and leadership, as well as a deeper understanding of Nick's passion for democratizing technology.Nick Foy is the Founder, CEO, and Chief Evangelist of Silverdale Technology, which provides access to world-class processes, systems, and change management methods regardless of their size or budget. Going against the grain of the ERP industry, Nick and his team are 'democratizing ERP' with their unique perspectives, such as their standard business process library, fixed price implementation and money-back guarantees.Nick is well placed to do so, with over 30-years of experience in business and technology consulting and leadership positions, particularly in logistics and supply chain, at Amazon, Capgemini Consulting, ModusLink Corporation, 3663 First for Foodservice, and The Glenmorangie Distillery Company. Born in Scotland and currently living in rural Washington, USA, Nick is a frequent traveler, having made it all around the US, Europe, and Asia for work. Still, he also spares time for his interests, such as being an aspiring guitar player, whisky sampling as a hobby, and being an early adopter and owner of a large tech graveyard of discarded first editions.

Like an old 80s sitcom, this episode was taped before a live audience of about 90 regular listeners who carried on a vigorous commentary and questions in the Zoom chat, and we had a special guest at the very end—John Hinderaker in the (virtual) flesh! And since we actually recorded during happy hour for a change (and not Saturday morning as has been the case for the last several weeks), we rolled out several whisky choices for the episode.Listeners may know that Lucretia, this week's host, has been partial in the past to Glenmorangie, which the great Kingsley Amis noted "has been called delicate and mild, even faintly sweet." This is not a description anyone would ever use about Lucretia, making this a dubious match. Tonight she had two varieties of Glenfiddich on hand, which Amis called "fruity and well balanced." Maybe she's better matched with Macallan, which Amis says is "powerful yet smooth." That sounds more like it!By popular demand, we took up a news items we didn't get to last week in the crush of shocking news stories, namely Judge Aileen Cannon's ruling that special counsel Jack Smith's appointment as special counsel to torment Trump is unconstitutional. Steve invented a special judicial scale—the Silberman Scale from 1 - 10—for John Yoo to grade the opinion, and he gave it a solid 8, which is pretty darn good. From there—oh my! Lucretia unveiled her handcrafted tin foil cowboy hat, as we kicked around whether the loss of trust in key government institutions (cough, cough—FBI—cough, cough, or cough—Secret Service—cough) is because they are merely incompetent and negligent, or whether their carelessness is deliberate. From there John Hinderaker gave us an update on the FBI investigation of the firebombing of his office building back in January, and finally we all gave our predictions for Kamala Harris's running mate, but not until we rolled out the first of whiat is doubtless to be many weeks of ritual denunciation of Harris. So if you missed the live taping, pour yourself a nice, dry single malt and settle in.
