There's a common misconception that people on home dialysis can't have pets. But that's just a myth. Professor Cameron Wolfe, a transplant infectious disease specialist at Duke University, along with Keith Plummer, a transplant recipient with home hemodialysis experience, and Brittany Dickerson, an in center hemodialysis patient with experience in peritoneal dialysis are here to share how you can safely manage treatments while living with pets. Professor Cameron Wolfe is a Transplant Infectious Disease specialist at Duke University.  He was a previous Chair of the Disease Transmission Advisory Committee (DTAC), working with the federal transplant administration to ensure safe and successful transplantation in the US.  Cameron is the current secretary of the Infectious Disease section of The Transplantation Society, an international society representing transplant professionals and patients globally.  His research focusses on safe transplantation for patients and donors living with HIV and hepatitis, and managing respiratory viruses and emerging pathogens. Keith Plummer was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2010, coming out of surgery with one kidney functioning at 20 percent. Thanks to a great Nephrologist and a lot of hard work, he was able to hold off dialysis for close to a decade. Keith was on home hemodialysis for 4 years before receiving a transplant 1.5 years ago. Keith first got involved with advocacy about 6 years ago as he lobbied for the TRSA, making many visits to the state capitol to fight for industry and employees. Over his time on dialysis, Keith have moved from part time to being fully retired which has given more time to advocate. He is an advocate for the DPC and has participated in the last four fly-ins in Washington DC. He has been advocating with the NKF for the past 2 years and look forward to helping kidney patients in New York and across America. Brittany Dickerson is a dedicated mother, motivational speaker, and compassionate life coach living with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). She uses her kidney failure battle to educate and help others regarding kidney disease and transplantation. Through partnership with the National Kidney Foundation, Brittany has had the opportunity to mentor others and to be a guest for the National Kidney Foundation Podcast channel. Her dedication to kidney awareness has led her to pursue becoming a National Kidney Foundation Advocate. Brittany uses her voice to spread a powerful message of perseverance and hope. Brittany's goal is to continue making an impact on individuals facing adversity, offering guidance, support, and being a shining example of strength in the face of hardship.   Additional Resources: Safe Living After Transplant Find Support with NKF Peers   Do you have comments, questions, or suggestions? (AURN News) – In observance of National Kidney Month, Black Health Matters and the National Kidney Foundation have united forces to bring the pressing issue of kidney health within the African American community to the forefront. According to the National Kidney Foundation, Black individuals face a staggering fourfold increased risk of developing kidney failure compared to other racial groups. One in three kidney failure patients in the United States is Black. Nationwide, 33% of adults are susceptible to kidney disease. Diabetes emerges as the primary culprit behind kidney failure, closely followed by high blood pressure, according to the organization. The data is sobering: more than 42% of Black adults grapple with high blood pressure, a significant contributing factor to kidney dysfunction. There is a critical need for comprehensive outreach initiatives, early detection programs, and culturally sensitive healthcare interventions tailored to the unique needs of the African American community. We must remember that behind each statistic lies a personal narrative of struggle, resilience, and the unyielding quest for equitable access to quality healthcare. Far too many African Americans in our country are not treated fairly or taken seriously by medical professionals. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

While chronic kidney disease diagnosis is rare in children, its effects are profound. Furthermore, there's so much scientists don't know about kidney function. Keia Sanderson is hoping to change that. She specializes in chronic kidney disease treatment in pediatric patients and discusses avenues to advance treatment and prevention. This podcast gives her the perfect platform to explain How kidney disease is especially challenging to identity in children because chronic kidney disease stages are often asymptomatic in pediatric patients, Why preterm babies are vulnerable to certain conditions because of the development timing of the nephrons, and Why it's important to identity intervention measures before dialysis and kidney transplantation provide the only recourse. Keia Sanderson, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Her job is a mix of teaching, clinical work, and research. In her clinical work, she takes care of children with kidney disease at all stages, including kids who receive transplants. Her current research is focused on kidney outcomes in children with complex medical histories, in particular children who've been born prematurely. She says that the challenge is oftentimes the asymptomatic nature of kidney disease in children. Therefore, she and other clinicians are often meeting kids with disease states that are irreversible and are turning toward dialysis treatment and transplantation.  Dr. Sanderson gives listeners a special focus on the risks from preterm birth. Because preterm babies tend to have less nephron development, the nephrons that are present have to work overtime and are subject to hyper filtration. But because doctors have been able to identify this as a critical time, they are looking at ways to better manage preterm infant treatment. For example, what medications are they receiving that could affect kidney development? How are we feeding infants in this active development stage? How are we handling their oxygenation? While a clear pathway is not yet evident, she is hopeful she and other researches will find one. Currently, she's hoping to develop mathematical models to make better predications about the risk levels for different babies. Episode #69: with Jennifer Cramer-MillerYou know those articles and memes that are everywhere reprimanding us about what NOT to say to a friend who is going through a hard time of any kind? Jennifer is here today to say THE OPPOSITE of that. She's urging us to stop being afraid of saying the wrong things to friends with chronic illness, or friends dealing with anything else. Your friends will never say the perfect thing! WE will sometimes say the "wrong thing" to our friends. And I agree with Jennifer that we need to leave so much more room for people to say the imperfect thing and then let it go.Meet Jennifer Cramer-MillerJennifer is an author, speaker, and four-time kidney transplant recipient. Diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease at 22 and then experiencing the weight and relief of four transplants has given Jennifer a way of seeing life and the people in it that I could not wait to share with listeners.Jennifer's memoir, Incurable Optimist: Living with Illness and Chronic Hope  is available now where books are sold. About one in seven people have chronic kidney disease, or about 15 percent of Americans, and many of them don't know it.Treatments for kidney failure have improved — drugs, dialysis and kidney transplants are more successful than they used to be. But more than half of people who start dialysis still die within five years.MPR News host Angela Davis talks with a doctor about the need for prevention and early treatment, and a Minnesotan who lived through four kidney transplants.Guests Dr. Naim Issa is a nephrologist who treats people with kidney disease and kidney transplants at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
