In May of 2005, 4 teens were gunned down in the early morning hours by an unknown person or persons. One of the teens, Donte Ward, was connected to a known Detroit drug ring run by Cherylethia “Bunny” Holmes. The other three, Eddrick Clark, Michael Dillon, and Megan Post, were collateral damage as witnesses to an alleged hit that was put out on their friend. The case is not cold, but it is not solved. Who committed these Huntington Murders? Join us in the closet this week as we discuss a case from Beth's hometown. In the 1950s, the concept of medical gender transitioning became possible in the UK, and 2023 marks just over 70 years since the first known transition surgery was carried out in Britain. One of the people whose story really should be heard more is Michael Dillon, a British trans pioneer. His story leading up to this milestone was long and complex, and Dillon's life is neglected by mainstream LGBTQIA+ history. It's time for trans history to become more centralised in historical narratives of gender and sexuality. So here's Michael Dillon's story! --- Where to Find Us: Head to our website, learnaboutpod.com, to read the full episode notes and see a list of links and resources used to research this episode. “The Facemaker: A Visionary Surgeon's Battle to Mend the Disfigured Soldiers of World War I” is an unlikely story of modern plastic surgery on the battlefields of WWI, written by Lindsey Fitzharris. Fitzharris has a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Medicine from Oxford University, and her debut book, The Butchering Art (a no-holds-barred journey into the Victorian era operating room), won the PEN/E.O. Wilson Award for Literary Science. With The Facemaker, a New York Times Bestseller, she introduces us to long-overlooked medical pioneer Harold Gillies, the “Father of Modern Plastic Surgery" (incidentally, Gillies also performed the first phalloplasty on a transgender man, Michael Dillon, in 1945). After experiencing “the brutal hothouse of frontline surgery” firsthand, Gillies devoted himself to rebuilding the burned and broken faces of wounded soldiers, establishing one of the first hospitals dedicated entirely to facial reconstruction. Gillies was an audacious surgical innovator – he invented the “tubed pedicle” to increase the success rate of skin grafts, and developed the epithelial outlay, a method that revolutionized the rebuilding of eyelids. Lindsey draws a direct line from his groundbreaking work to the advances in face transplant surgery happening today. Dr. Fitzharris traces the birth of plastic surgery back not only to the physical realities of WWI facial wounds, but also to their psychological repercussions. This was a time when, though losing a limb made you a “hero,” losing a face made you a "monster,” and the soldiers in Gillies's care faced severe stigmatization upon their return to civilian life – many were forced to sit on specifically designated blue benches so that the public knew not to look at them. Plastic surgery emerged to shield injured soldiers from a society that was largely intolerant of facial differences. https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374282301/the-facemaker Learn more about the American Association for Physician Leadership at www.physicianleaders.org

Two and a half months ago, we told the story of the Huntington Prom Night Murders, four teenagers who were murdered on their prom night in 2005. On May 22nd, 2005, Donte Ward, Eddrick Clark, Michael Dillon, and Megan Poston, who was only sixteen, were all shot to death near Ward's home. Megan Poston's mother, Subrina Gebheart, spoke with us about what happened to her daughter. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The only open investigation regarding the case is a 45,000 dollar reward for any information on the case, brought together by Subrina, the other families, and others in the community.

No justice has ever been given to four teenagers brutally murdered the night after the Huntington High School Prom. On May 22nd, 2005, Donte Ward, Eddrick Clark, Michael Dillon, and Megan Poston, who was only sixteen, were shot to death near Ward's home. It was never discovered how these four teens knew each other or why they were all four at the same place at almost three A.M. when they were murdered. The following investigation led to Detroit, to the drug trade, and all around the neighborhoods of Huntington, but never found or convicted a killer of the tragic crime. This month we tackle the topic of plastic surgery:we talk about where and how rhinoplasties developed, how the original flap method changed through time, as well as how military conflict led to plastic surgery becoming an established subfield of medicine. We also manage to talk trans healthcare in the form of Michael Dillon - a trans man whose beard and accomplishments impress us to this day.Image: Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery and Nicholas Henri Jacob, ‘Iconografia d'anatomia chirurgica e di medicina operatoria,' Florence, 1841. Christine Helliwell tells the secret story of Operation Semut which took place during World War 2 in Borneo and Michael Dillon shares his recollections from his hair-raising trip from the mouth of the Ganges River to the mountains in the company of Edmund Hillary and a camera in his hand.
In 1977, Edmund Hillary was still mourning the tragic death of his wife and daughter in a plane crash, but decided to proceed with a trip they had earlier planned together. The idea was to journey up the Ganges from the mouth to as far as they could travel in a jet boat and then walk the rest of the way to the mountains. So he set off with friends and family on a journey that almost cost him his life. Michael Dillon filmed the journey in his documentary Ocean to Sky which has been re-edited for release to include interviews with members of the expedition including Edmund Hillary's son Peter.

(If you are here to find the timestamp to skip over the definitions section, skip from 6.20 to 9.54.) Some historical figures are riddles wrapped in enigmas wrapped in a vest, with a great manicure. Roberta Cowell is one of them. Raised as a boy, Roberta Cowell was a racing car driver, nearly an accidental assassin, and a World War II fighter pilot and a race car driver again before realising she was a transgender woman. Thus began her next grand plan to have her true sex (her words) realised, and her body match her mind. Thanks to Erin for providing the voice of Roberta Cowell. Erin is a transgender actress, musician and historian based in Victoria. Thanks also to Ben MacEllen for providing the voice of Michael Dillon. Ben is a transgender actor and LGBTIQA+ activist based in Victoria and his website is benmacellen.com. This podcast contains discussion of intersexuality, transgender issues, transphobia, gender reassignment surgery, outdated language with regards to transgender and intersex people, brief cruelty to animals, facial injuries, surgery and medical experimentation, war injuries, Nazi atrocities, cruelty to prisoners of war, war rape, attempted sexual assault, and some bad language. We have elected to use male pronouns for Roberta before she began her transition, as she herself did in her autobiography. Discussion of Roberta after she began her transition will then use female pronouns. In the same vein, we use female pronouns for Michael Dillon before he began his transition, and male pronouns thereafter. We have however avoided using their deadnames. All efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy of the information presented in this podcast however with the nature of historical research, there may be mistakes or inconsistencies. The fallible nature of human memory must also be considered and is a point of discussion in this episode. Nicola also misstated the year Roberta and her wife divorced, and it was in actuality, 1952. Wales is also part of the UK, she meant to say "Welsh people moved across the border to England." Should Wales be part of the UK? That's a question for another time. -- For more information on the podcast, go to womenofwarpod.com or follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @womenofwarpod for updates, sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes shenanigans. Micky D has lived a remarkable football journey and he joined us to share some of his favourite memories and stories. Growing up in the remote community of Cora Lynn in West Gippsland, Michael was part of his home town’s first-ever stand-alone senior premiership in 1986. Following his decorated playing career, he’s given back to the game he loves, both as an umpire and also as a junior recruiter for his beloved Cora Lynn. As an umpire, Michael’s short stature, quick wit and big personality have led to him being referred to as the ‘Razor Ray’ of country footy. We spoke about the things he loves most about umpiring - the highs, the lows and some of the funny moments he’s come across with whistle in hand. The highlight of the episode for me, was when Micky D shared his groundbreaking Sudanese refugee youth development program with us - a program which recently saw Michael nominated alongside the great Neale Daniher for the Victorian Australian of the year. This amazing program may just change the way people think about junior recruiting moving forward. Micky D is a local legend in both footy and umpiring circles, a great story-teller and I had a ball recording this episode. Enjoy...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pagan Kennedy tells stories about iconoclasts, humanitarian inventors, and scientific visionaries. Her eleven books include The First Man-Made Man, a study of the transgender pioneer Michael Dillon. Kennedy's journalism has appeared in dozens of publications including The New York Times Magazine, where she wrote the "Who Made That?" column. In the 1980s and '90s, she created a 'zine called Pagan's Head that anticipated today's self-produced samizdat -- and was named the Queen of 'Zines by Wired Magazine. She is now a contributing writer for the New York Times Opinion section; she is also co-producing a serial podcast for the Radiotopia network. As a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT in 2010-11, Kennedy studied microbiology and neuroengineering. She has won numerous other awards including an NEA fellowship, a Smithsonian fellowship, and two Massachusetts Cultural Council fellowships.

Whisky Advocate's annual WhiskyFest took over the Marriott Marquis in New York City's Times Square Tuesday night, and we'll have some of the highlights along with the sadness. There was a pall in one corner the ballroom as whisky lovers mourned the death of master distiller Dave Pickerell last month along with teams from several of the whiskies he helped create during his long career. We'll talk with one of Dave's protegés, Hillrock Estate's Dylan Strang, about the distillery's plans to move forward using the lessons he and his colleagues learned from their friend and mentor. In our Behind the Label segment, we'll have an interview you can only hear on WhiskyCast as we talk with artist Michael Dillon, the painter who created the one-of-a-kind label for the 1926 Macallan that shattered the world record for a whisky auction last week in London. In the news, we'll have the details of the U.S. Treasury Department's plan to rewrite federal alcohol regulations for the first time in more than three decades - and some of the agency's proposals have craft distillers nervous.
