What if I were to tell you, “You should be more wrong”? You’d likely be a bit surprised. Throughout our entire lives, we are told--whether implicitly or explicitly--that we should aim to be right. When we get something wrong or have to correct ourselves, we inherently feel embarrassed and like we need to improve in some way.   Colin Hunter is on a mission to reverse this mindset. He just came out with his new book titled Be More Wrong in which he explains why he preaches this message of being more wrong and learning fast from it.    Colin also facilitates mentors, coaches, individuals, and teams in the areas of leadership presence, personal brand change, leadership and innovation, strategic dialogue, creating board-level influence, and earning a seat at the executive table. As a result of his work, his clients have shown award-winning differences in the ways they lead.    Today we are having a conversation on Colin’s book and his message of “be more wrong.” Tune in to learn how to help your screw-ups add to your success as a leader.   In this episode, you will hear: Why leaders are more effective when they’re having fun. How freeing up our thoughts can help us make better decisions. Indicators that someone is at a tension point between pain and freedom. The dangers of living too long in a place you’re not supposed to be. What causes some leaders to continually lose their top talent. Why mentors are necessary. The importance of getting into rougher seas in your organization. Why Colin’s organization uses actors to train leaders. How he helps people with imposter syndrome. Why introverts may make the best leaders. How to stop being crippled by failure and start becoming functional again. How being refreshingly direct helps shape and guide people’s leadership skills. I am passionate about the real estate world and work in it in three different ways. First, I was an investor. Next, I started a property management company called Atlas Property Management. Most recently I co-founded a construction company called Atlas Construction. In my first 18 months in real estate, I was able to acquire ownership or ownership stake in 65+ doors while self-managing them. This led me to start a property management company. Atlas Property Management is currently managing over 600 units and on track to be over 850 units by the end of 2020. Atlas Construction which was founded in 2020 will do $1M+ in rehab this year. During college, I played football while gaining 3 engineering degrees leading me to a career as a professional engineer. Realizing that it wasn’t for me, I made the decision to leave the corporate world after 7 years, and start investing in real estate. Today, when I’m not helping clients with their buy and hold investments, I enjoy helping others through sharing my faith. I am a husband and father of 2. My guest today is doing great things in the field of education. I’ve come across his work in the gifted and twice exceptional circles, and I knew he would be a valuable guest on the show. I’m happy to have connected with him around his work in teaching critical thinking skills. Colin Seale was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, where struggles in his upbringing gave birth to his passion for educational equity. Tracked early into talented and gifted programs, Colin was afforded opportunities his neighborhood peers were not. Colin uses lessons from his experience as a math teacher, later as an attorney, and now a keynote speaker, along with his work as a contributor to Forbes, The 74, and Education Post. He’s the author of Thinking Like a Lawyer: A Framework for Teaching Critical Thinking Skills to All Students. Colin founded thinkLaw, a multi-award-winning organization to help educators leverage inquiry-based educational instruction and strategies to close the critical thinking gap and ensure that they teach and reach all students, regardless of race, zip code, or what side of the poverty line they are born into. When he’s not serving as the world’s most fervent critical thinking advocate, Colin proudly serves as the world’s greatest entertainer to his two young children, and as a loving husband to his wife, Carrie. Show Highlights: Why Colin is intensely passionate about wanting to fix things for people and help them find solutions Colin’s personal brand of intensity revolves around his strategy about “how we get there” regarding critical thinking In his growing up years, Colin heard many “he’s gifted, but” statements, but not many “he’s gifted, and” statements How Colin was labeled for his intense behaviors instead of being supported How we’ve created a culture where conformity is the expectation, but many kids don’t fit these standards Cultural factors around Colin’s intensity include his family heritage of Caribbean immigrants from Barbados and their British tendencies, which teach passivity and non-confrontation The urge and commitment to end generational poverty through education How Colin had to tone down and tune himself out in third grade when he was labeled as “extra” How Colin dealt with setbacks and disappointments by overcompensating Why Colin is committed to galvanizing educators to run on “high” and equipping them with the “how” of helping kids unlock their critical thinking potential Colin’s book is available for pre-order now on Amazon; it comes out on April 30 How Colin helps harness the power of his intensity by learning to be authentic within himself The importance of giving people permission and courage to be who they are The need to be intentional in helping kids learn entrepreneurship and innovation Colin’s professional and personal habits in using his fire for good include weekly one-hour innovation meetings with his team and taking a moment to press “pause” for times of creativity and innovation How Colin helps others stop focusing on what they want to do, but on how they want their professional lives to look, feel, and be managed Parting words from Colin: “We shouldn’t talk about an ADHD diagnosis or being intense or extra as a defect. If we could transition in education from thinking about what’s best for ALL kids to thinking about what’s best for EACH kid, then we can help each child achieve excellence, however that is defined for them.” Resources: Think Law The latest Embracing Intensity workbook on Balancing Your Time and Energy is available in the Embracing Intensity Community. Two-time world record holder, Colin O’Brady embodies what it means to overcome obstacles, test limits, dream big, set goals, and never give up. Apply his lessons to your money and anything you do. Guest Biography A two-time world record holder, Colin O'Brady has spent the last two decades as an elite endurance athlete. Raised in Portland, Oregon Colin spent his childhood exploring the mountains of the Pacific Northwest and cultivated a passion for adventure in the outdoors. Colin was a nationally ranked swimmer and youth soccer star. He was recruited to swim at the collegiate varsity level for Yale University where he graduated with a Bachelors in Economics in 2006. Before beginning what he thought would be a lifelong career in finance, Colin left to explore the world on a backpacking trip. While in Thailand, Colin suffered a tragic accident and was severely burned in a fire. His injuries covered nearly 25% of his body, primarily damaging his legs and feet. Doctors warned him he might never walk again normally, but Colin was determined to beat the odds. He focused not only on walking again, but set himself a goal: to complete his first triathlon following his recovery. This focus drove his recovery and rehab. A mere 18-months after his accident while working as a commodities trader in Chicago, Colin amazed the racing world when he not only completed his first triathlon, but he placed first overall amateur at the 2009 Chicago Triathlon. Over the past six years, Colin has raced as a professional triathlete in 25 countries on six continents representing the United States in international triathlon competitions. With a passion for pushing his body and exploring persevered limits, Colin took on an extraordinary mission. On May 27, 2016 with his project coined BEYOND 7/2, Colin conquered the speed records for the Explorers Grand Slam and Seven Summits; a global mountaineering challenge which includes climbing the tallest mountain on each continent and trekking the last degree of latitude to the North and South Poles. Colin’s world record feat has been featured by CBS Sunday Morning, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, Men's Journal, Outside Magazine, People.com, and TODAY among many other national media outlets. Colin uses his public platform for charitable good - to inspire kids and their communities to dream big and set goals, while promoting the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle to achieve happiness and success. Colin continues to use his athletic ambitions to make the world a better place. Today we're interviewing Colin Byrne, CEO of Weber Shandwick UK and EMEA – in the latest of our series of interviews with some of the most high-profile leaders in UK public relations. By day Colin is CEO of the UK's most award-winning PR firm, with 35 years’ communications experience, by night he's a writer, aspiring novelist and musician. His PR experience spans domestic and international public relations. He joined Weber Shandwick in 1995, rising to lead the public affairs practice in London in 1997. He is now CEO of the firm’s UK and EMEA network and a senior member of the global management team. He’s recently announced he’ll be stepping down after more than 20 years at the helm. After several years in private and not-for-profit sector PR, Colin joined the British Labour Party’s communications team in 1987 and was quickly promoted to head of press and broadcasting. He was press aide to Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Jack Straw. He is a visiting fellow at The Reuters School of Journalism at Oxford University and a trustee of ActionAid UK and The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Colin and I discuss: How he began his career in public relations, finding himself as a press officer at the Automobile Association having previously been unaware that PR existed! How he was very interested in politics from a very early age. Why a letter to Peter Mandelson (then comms director at the Labour Party) in response to an interview Mandelson had done with the Guardian transformed Colin’s career. Why having a mentor was critical to his success. Why Colin never wanted to work for a PR agency. How he enjoyed his time “as a reasonably prominent moth around the Blair flame”.. The challenges of being an agency CEO. The importance of PR people embracing new technologies. Why he’s planning on going “from a well-remunerated senior PR professional to being a penniless aspirant writer”. Why most of the change in public relations over the past 50 years has happened in the last 10 years. How social media and Cannes Lions opening up to PR firms has driven this change. Why we need more kids in PR who are like Jamal Edwards. Why we are living in era of excellent public relations work. Why PR must own the idea. How public relations must recruit from other creative professions, rather than merely recycling “our own”. Colin’s advice for people entering public relations as a career today. Why public relations is now a profession, not just a job, and therefore it needs to act like a profession.
