Methylene Blue & Mitochondria: How This Compound Fights Alzheimer's and Brain Aging

I'm excited to share my conversation with Dr. Scott Sherr, where we dive deep into methylene blue - a compound you've probably seen all over social media lately (those blue tongues!). As someone whose primary research focuses on Alzheimer's disease, I was fascinated to explore the science behind this molecule that dates back to the 1870s and was actually the first drug registered with the FDA in 1897.  The most fascinating insight for me was learning how methylene blue can serve as an electron acceptor in our mitochondria - essentially functioning as a substitute for oxygen when our cells are under stress. This explains why it shows promise for everything from traumatic brain injury to cognitive enhancement and even as a potential alternative to stimulant medications.   If you're interested in optimizing brain performance, understanding mitochondrial health, or simply curious about this blue compound that's suddenly everywhere, this episode provides both the scientific foundation and practical applications you need. Subscribe to The Neuroscience Experience for more conversations at the intersection of brain science and performance. I'm committed to bringing you evidence-based insights that you can apply to your own health journey.  SponsorsA huge thank you to my sponsors for supporting this episode. Alzheimer's doesn't just “happen” later in life—it's a slow, silent process that can begin decades before symptoms appear. In this solo episode, we challenge the myth that Alzheimer's is purely genetic, and break down what the science really says about your risk. I explore the role of the APOE4 gene, how it interacts with lifestyle and metabolic health, and why women—especially during and after menopause—may face a unique vulnerability. Most importantly, I introduce three cutting-edge blood tests that can detect the earliest signs of Alzheimer's, long before memory loss sets in. We'll also talk prevention: from blood sugar and insulin resistance to inflammation, hormone balance, and brain energy metabolism—everything you can start doing right now to safeguard your cognitive future. This is more than a conversation about Alzheimer's—it's a roadmap for taking control of your brain health. SponsorsA huge thank you to my sponsors for supporting this episode. Lze hubnout i s ALKOHOLEM a SLADKÝM?

Omezuje to dehydrataci, protože alkohol odvodňuje. A s přípravou předem vyjdete ještě lépe. Imagine being at the forefront of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's research, holding hope for millions of patients. That's where Eliezer Masliah stood—a top neuroscientist and key figure at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), responsible for overseeing billions in funding intended to push groundbreaking research on these devastating diseases forward. But things weren't as they seemed.Recent investigations, including one published in Science (Vol 385, Issue 6716), have raised alarming questions about Masliah's research. Over 100 of his studies may contain falsified data, including duplicated or manipulated images, claiming to reveal critical insights into how Alzheimer's and Parkinson's impact the brain. If this sounds eerily familiar, you're right. Just two years ago, another scandal rocked the Alzheimer's research world. Sylvain Lesné's 2006 Nature paper was considered a landmark in Alzheimer's research—until 2022, when it was revealed that the paper was tainted by manipulated data. That revelation sent shockwaves through the scientific community, throwing years of research and drug development into doubt. And now, we're facing a similar situation again. The implications of these new allegations against Masliah are massive. His work has shaped entire fields of study, influencing experimental treatments like the Parkinson's drug prasinezumab. But with these revelations, years of research and billions of dollars in funding hang in the balance. What's most heartbreaking? Real people—those battling Alzheimer's and Parkinson's—are caught in the middle of this scandal. They've been placing their hopes in breakthroughs, trusting science to provide answers and relief. If the very research supporting their treatments is compromised, the cost isn't just in lost time and money—it's a betrayal of the trust placed in the system by millions of patients and their families. We have to demand better. Science, and the people depending on it, deserve better. The Neuro Athletics Newsletter Instagram: @louisanicola_Twitter : @louisanicola_YouTube: @Louisa NicolaThe Neuro Experience Podcast is proud to have hosted: Dr Andrew Huberman, Dr Gabrielle Lyon, Dr Layne Norton, Thomas DeLauer, Shawn Stevenson, Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, Saad Alam, Uma Naidoo, Dr. Lanna Cheuck, Angela Lee Pucci, Jillian Turecki, Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum, Dr. Darren Candow, Dr. Sue Varma, Evy Poumpouras, Dr Casey Means, Renee Deehan, Dr Chris Palmer, Dr Charles Brenner, Dr Joe Zundell

Found My Fitness - Rhonda Patrick Key Takeaways Tips for maintaining consistency: (1) What gets you excited to work out?; (2) What exercise do you enjoy and have low pain with?; (3) What will you execute consistently?Variables for building strength: (1) Mechanical tension; (2) Number of hard sets; (3) Training muscles at long lengths under tensionFactors that increase the risk of injury: (1) Increase in training load and/or volume when you aren't prepared; (2) Psychological stress – what happens in the mind affects the body (and what happens in the body affects the mind); (3) Sleep quality is a big lever for injury risk and pain management Form doesn't move the needle on injury risk – tissue adaptation matters more“The best time to start lifting weights is right now.” – Layne NortonHave joint pain or never exercised? Start with lighter weights and movements that either don't cause pain or induce less painIt almost doesn't matter what you start with – do whatever keeps you consistentMost practical tip for protein intake: Shoot for about 1g/lb bodyweight – or more depending on goals, but consume as much as you want balancing other macros to be properly fueled for exercise and recoverySeed oils are contributing to the health crisis – but probably not because they're inherently bad Seed oils are not innocuous but energy toxicity is a big chunk of what's happening, we're eating too much and moving too littleSeed oils are also more representative of consuming more processed foodsBottom line: There is no strong evidence to avoid seed oils, as long as you're still controlling for overall diet quality and calories – focus on diet quality and the bigger picture“Have guidelines, not rules.” – Layne NortonMost people believe what they want to believe regardless of the evidenceSticking to water is good, but if you switch to no- or low-calorie drink from full calories, it will save a ton of caloriesKeeping your body fat down is the best way to protect your health; how you get there is less important than getting there – the most important thing is consistencySupplements won't do the work for you but they might help you recover fasterRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgGet my exact protocols for boosting levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and enhancing cognition Discover my premium podcast, The Aliquot Dr. Layne Norton is a Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences, a professional bodybuilder, and a champion powerlifter. In 2020 I got very sick and couldn't recover fully, ending up finding out that I have post viral dysautonomia. Recently I heard you talk about how the low carb version of the Paleo autoimmune protocol is really an upgrade. In the time since getting sick my baseline became low carb Paleo, and that kept me doing pretty well. Now that I have been heavily supplementing with LMNT it's been even better! Can you try and get into the mechanics of why/how a keto-paleo diet makes such of a difference for these kinds of issues? Does it come down simply to inflammation? Really appreciate the podcast. Keep up the good work! Thank you Jacob   Cholesterol…again Shane writes: Hey Robb and Nicki, I know you get asked this all the time and I've gone down the rabbit hole on every related podcast I could find of yours regarding this topic, but there is just so much information out there on this topic I don't know what to think, and I'm hoping you can help. I'm 41, fit and healthy at least by any American standard. I've been involved with CrossFit (was even at one of Robb's Nutrition Seminars back in the day where I got to meet you both), coached for a decade, life happened and now I'm a Software Engineer. While my job is nowhere near as active, I still train 5-6 days a week but more of a mix of strength training, with some metcons, and regular doses of zone2. I still prescribe to CrossFit's nutrition in 100 words and so eat meat, vegetables, some fruit little starch and no sugar about 90% of the time. We're not financially set enough to be able to buy as much from the farm directly as we'd like, so meat is still typical feedlot stuff you can get at City Market etc. but I do try to hit 1.7g/lb of protein per day and fill in with the fruits and veggies. I haven't had a PCP in forever and so decided to get one so maybe it wouldn't take 3 months to get any kind of appointment when/if I did need one and of course they wanted to do a blood panel, and I was curious too so I did. My panel came back and it wasn't great. My total cholesterol is 298, HDL is 55, triglycerides are 76, LDL is 225, LDL particle number is 2022 nmol/L, LDL pattern is A, ApoB is 162 mg/dL, LipoProteinA is 101. My doctor immediately started talking about statins so I asked about a CAC and did that and got back a score of 0. With all of that data I'm just not sure how to proceed. I hear Dr. Attia talking about prioritizing apoB reduction, Layne Norton talking about the mendelian randomization studies showing the linear relationship between LDL and cardiac risk. But then I also hear Dr. Malhotra talking about statins and their misrepresented effect on cardiac disease along with Chris Kresser and obviously I want to believe what they say but I also want to make sure I'm not cutting the time my kids get with their father shorter than it had to be. I quit drinking 2+ years ago, I don't smoke, and I feel like I eat cleaner now that I ever have, so I'm thinking I'll just keep on keeping on, continue getting yearly bloodwork, and go back for another CAC in 3-5 years to make sure things aren't progressing, but I'd love to hear any thoughts you have on the matter. Thank you both so much for all the great info you put out there and please keep it salty. Shane   Crohn's Part II Fred writes:  Hi Robb and Nicki, You responded to my question re: Crohn's on Podcast #156 dated June 15, 2023. Thanks again for the information. I followed up on the resources you gave me and implemented a bunch of the recommendations. My stomach has been great but now dealing with sore tendons and joints which is a side effect of the biologic meds. Anyway, I wanted to provide you some additional information because you had wondered what the "precipitating event" could have been to get Crohn's at the age of 54. Again, until this point I was incredibly healthy with no issues at all. Back to the "potential" precipitating events. March 30, 2021 I got Covid (Delta) just before the vaccines came out in Canada. I was sick but nothing too serious and then because of the vaccine mandates I had to get my first vaccine on May 12, 2021, then second shot July 6, 2021, third vaccine January 8, 2022. In August 2022 my blood pressure went through the roof. I have never had high blood pressure then in January 2022 I had major stomach issues and was diagnosed with Crohn's in March 2022. Who knows if there is any connection but its interesting that this illness came about after getting Covid and then hitting my system with 3 vaccinations in less than a year. Anyway, thought you might find this interesting. Thanks again! Fred   Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Layne Norton, Ph.D., one of the world's top experts in nutrition and training for physical fitness. We discuss how to evaluate scientific evidence and the validity of different practices aimed at achieving fat loss, muscle strength and hypertrophy, microbiome health, vitality, and longevity. We explore many hotly debated topics, including fasting, seed oils, saturated fats, sugar, red meat, artificial/low-calorie sweeteners, and GLP-1 agonists (e.g., Ozempic). Additionally, we delve into the timing of protein and carbohydrate intake relative to fasting and exercise, fat loss and sleep, and the benefits of dietary protein and fiber on overall health. We also discuss how to accelerate hypertrophy and fat loss, improve strength, whether we need to train to “failure,” how to enhance exercise recovery, and how to manage pain. We cover training before versus after age 50, whether metabolism changes with age, and the connection between muscle health and longevity. We also address why certain behaviors and supplements might work for some people but not others. This personal experience shifted her focus towards environmental toxins and their broader implications onhealth. In the podcast, Dr. Chen discusses the pervasive issue of aluminum exposure through everyday items like cookware and antacids, highlighting its potential to cause oxidative stress and DNA damage at the cellular level. She notes the broader health implications, such as increased risksof chronic diseases like Alzheimer's. On today's solo episode....Neurodegeneration and brain aging affect millions worldwide, with numbers expected to triple by 2050. While pharmaceuticals offer limited solutions, lifestyle choices, especially exercise and diet, are vital for brain health.Study 1: Chronic Inflammation and Cognitive Performance The CARDIA study tracked inflammation in young adults and found chronic inflammation can impair midlife cognitive performance. Participants with high CRP levels were significantly more likely to have poor processing speed and executive function. Early management of inflammation is crucial for cognitive health.Study 2: Smoking and Cognitive Decline A Nature Communications study of 32,000 adults revealed smoking accelerates cognitive decline by up to 85% over 10 years. Smokers who adopted healthy behaviors like exercise and socializing had cognitive decline rates similar to non-smokers, highlighting the importance of quitting smoking and healthy living.Study 3: Diets Rich in Omega-3s and Antioxidants A study found older adults with diets rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and vitamins show slower brain aging and better cognitive function. Nutrients like alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E, and choline are crucial for brain health, emphasizing the role of diet in cognitive maintenance.Sponsors:ZocDoc- Use code NEURO - https://www.zocdoc.com/neuroBioProtein Technology - Use code LOUISA to save 10% - https://www.bioproteintech.com/shop/biopro-plus-cortisleepStudies:1.
