Today we have a special guest joining us. Dr. Kaliym Isalm is an author and the founder of The TrainingPro Academy. He also runs a boutique educational consulting firm and works as an Assistant Professor of Practice at Southern Illinois University. Kaliym has written four books and, in this episode, we are talking about his most recent, The 12 Inch Rule of Leadership.   When Kaliym joined his fraternity, he had to memorize a 12 inch rule. What he came to find over the years is that those who could recite those 12 rules on command (even long after they first joined the fraternity) had a much steeper career trajectory than those who forgot the rules. This launched Kaliym into an in-depth research project which turned into a book.    Throughout our conversation, we talk more about this process of bringing The 12-Inch Rule of Leadership to fruition. We also get into Kaliym's educational and career background and discuss some of his best leadership principles. Tune in to learn from the many varied experiences of Kaliym Isalm.   In this episode, you will hear: Kaliym's experiences in the Air Force. How he got into education. The two phrases that sum up his leadership: innovation and taking chances. How he leveraged technology to make a difference. The importance of value-based learning. Where Kaliym came up with the idea for The 12 Inch Rule of Leadership. What the book covers. How to be an effective communicator. How to maintain the dignity of simplicity when you give a message. This is something all of us could learn from. Every entrepreneur is going to leave their business somehow. You may sell it, it may fail, or you may even die as the owner. Regardless, you're going to leave somehow; you might as well do it by design.   This is exactly what Frank did. He was able to sell his company and now has more freedom in his life. We are thrilled to have him on the show to talk about this process and what it did for both his company and himself internally.    If you're looking to learn from a strong exit strategy or simply want to make a difference the way that Frank has made a difference, tune in.   In this episode, you will hear: Frank's background in real estate. What his experience of going out on his own and launching a business was like. How he and his partner built momentum in their business. How they started acquiring people and building trust. The importance of investing in your employees. The difference between being an investor and being an owner of a business. How to release people that don't align with your core values. In this summer entrepreneur series, we have been talking with business owners all over the spectrum. Some run eight-figure businesses and some run smaller ones. Today, though, we wanted to introduce an entrepreneur who is within the genesis of his business.   A lot of early entrepreneurs don't put the right systems in place right away. They don't lay the necessary foundations for building a strong business. So I thought it would be really helpful for all of you emerging entrepreneurs who have experienced this struggle to hear from someone who is just a few steps ahead of you.   Brad Houston is the owner of Guy's Sewer and Drain, a drain cleaning business in the Twin Cities/Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Today he is joining us to talk all about his journey to becoming an entrepreneur and the process he has gone through until now to grow his business.   In this episode, you will hear: Brad's career history. As you likely already know, in an entrepreneurial journey, no one starts out as an entrepreneur. Take my story for example. Straight out of college, I jumped into the nonprofit world. After years of struggles and pay cuts, I became extremely passionate about the budding entrepreneurs I was meeting and the big dreams they carried. It was at this point that I decided to step out on my own to help them and, in that, became an entrepreneur myself.   We're smack dab in the middle of a series on entrepreneurship where we've been highlighting a lot of our clients. However, today we wanted to switch it up a bit by expanding on the story I told above. I'm going to share all about my entrepreneurial journey and that of our team here at Experience Leadership.    There are five lessons that I've picked up over the last decade of being an entrepreneur. During this amazing time of supporting entrepreneurs and leaders within our communities and around the world, I had to learn these five lessons over and over again. They not only apply to me though; they've been practiced by many of the leaders that I've had the privilege of working with over the years as well. Tune in to learn these five keys to being a highly successful entrepreneur.    In this episode, you will hear: Entrepreneurs are driven by something beyond money. Why we dig deep beneath the surface with our clients. Entrepreneurs are humble enough to both teach and learn. Entrepreneurs focus on the things that matter. There are two types of entrepreneurs: technicians and visionaries. Entrepreneurs are aware of their limitations. The importance of connection and relationships in entrepreneurship. Businesses exist to help others to bring value to others. Because of this, we wanted to take some time to not only celebrate the victories of some of these “superhumans,” but to also talk about some of their challenges. Everyone encounters roadblocks along the way; it's a part of our shared humanity.   To kick us off, I'm talking with Reuben Saltzman. He is very passionate about seeing entrepreneurs from Minnesota in particular be successful.   In this episode, Reed, Tim, and I are talking about entrepreneurship and what it takes to get support from an investor. Reed emphasizes the importance of grit and never giving up and how to balance that with all of those little business details. Tune in to hear our incredibly rich conversation.   In this episode, you will hear: The quality that sets emerging entrepreneurs up for succes. The power of starting a business based on a problem you see and want to solve. What grit looks like and why it's so important for entrepreneurs. Why we need peer networks. How Reed sets boundaries with the entrepreneurs he works with. The values he looks for in the businesses he supports. Why entrepreneurs should set a big vision for their companies. Today, I'm not sharing a traditional interview as I usually do on the show. Instead, I'm inviting you to jump into a conference in which I recently got to participate. The conference was put on by The Inspired Leadership Academy and it was a great time to educate learners along with my fellow speakers.   In the talk I'm sharing with you today, I teach the three beliefs you need to shift within yourself. Most of us spend our lives looking at ourselves. It's our human nature to be selfish. However, the problem with this is that we're looking at a distorted reflection of ourselves or at just a snapshot of our lives. To find what matters in life, we need to change the way we think and view the world.   Tune in to learn how to do this. Throughout the talk, I'll help get you on the path towards achieving the purposes for which you were designed and the things to which you were called.   In this episode, you will hear: The false identity many of us grew up believing. How understanding our true identity shifts our entire life. The 3 things we need to do to see ourselves differently and achieve our purpose. Why our reflection never represents who we truly are. Why we need to challenge the picture we have of ourselves. How opening a window can change our life. What really matters in life and how to find it. We also feature stories of successful people so you learn from real people, and not just from theory. I’d love for you to give me a review over on Apple Podcasts. Simply select “Ratings and Reviews” and “Write a Review” then a quick line with your favorite part of the episode. It only takes a second and it helps spread the word about the podcast.
