While our main focus here at BAOS is craft breweries, chatting with the folks who take care of the ingredients is just as important. Colin Byrne of Le Labo, a yeast company based in Quebec, joined Cee and Nate to chat about all things yeast, the lineup of beers all used Le Labo yeast so it was great to compare and taste different beers side by side that use the same yeast, they touched on the differences between dry and liquid yeast, how house yeast comes about, how yeast is propagated and reused, the differences between yeast companies, and talked about his work with a new contract brewery in Montreal, Passenger. They crushed some killer beers with Le Labo yeast, including Passenger The Sea To Sky West Coast IPA, Siboire Discipline Non-Alcoholic IPA, Passenger Malinovka Czech Pils, Overflow Cross Walk Dry-Hopped Pale Ale, Breton Irish Stout, Kichesippi Sasquatch Schnitzel Vienna-style Lager, and Passenger The Fire Pine Porter. This was fascinating - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Dr.Colin Byrne, researcher in Teagasc Grange is on this week's Beef edge podcast to discuss key aspects of a synchronisation regime for a suckler beef herd. Current usage of artificial insemination (AI) is low in Irish suckler herds and this has implications for the speed of genetic improvement. In Ireland, approximately 1 out of every 5 calves born in beef herds are bred from artificial insemination and Colin discusses the benefits of AI. He outlines different synchronisation regimes for beef heifers and beef cows over 35 days calved. With sexed semen more widely available for beef sires in the past number of years, Colin also discusses the success rates. Any business, no matter what size or how old it is, should always be ready for sale. If your business is 'sale ready' you're on the right track for making your business even more successful. Take a cold, clinical and hard look at your business and ask, are we doing the best that we can? If not, what could we do better. Why would someone want to buy us? Why would someone NOT want to buy us? Waterford accountants FitzGerald Power brought brand experts Totem into their business to give it a 'once over' - and lessons were learnt. Colin Byrne, Creative Director with Totem and Stuart FitzGerald, managing partner at FitzGerald Power share their insights about the process and why and how any business would benefit from doing the same.Their 'hires in a heartbeat'. Colin wants business coach Marty Neumeier and Stuart opted for another business coach, his choice was Jim Collins.Mary Walsh is co-founder with husband Shay of what is now Ireland's largest pallet maker. Former banker Mary joined TeamGBS to share her passion for pallets. She even admits on air that she 'LOVES pallets'. So that's a first! Every business has its little quirks and we learn that to make pallets you have to heat them to 56 degrees Centigrade to ensure the death of the dreadful bark beetle. Mary's business was transformed when she entered the 'Going for Growth' programme, run by Paula FitzSimons and she encourages anyone who can, to get involved in that programme. Mary is also volunteer lead entrepreneur on the wonderful Acorns programme that encourages women in rural Ireland to get involved in business and Mary also shares her passion for that. Her 'hire in a heartbeat'? Ryanair's Michael O'Leary - a popular choice amongst TeamGBS members, but he'd have to start at the bottom.Pamela Laird of Moxi Loves and Tammy Darcy of The Shona Project joined TeamGBS to encourage women entrepreneurs to get involved in the Visa (Card) 'She's Next' programme that will give five women led businesses €10,000 in cash each, plus mentoring that last year's winner Tammy, said was absolutely invaluable - opening doors right around the world. The Shona Project is fantastically successful in getting young women to be more confident and the social enterprise is now reaching around the world. Pamela's 'hire in a heartbeat' is Kim Kardashian (but of course!) whilst Tammy wants three hires, Gillian Maxwell, Orlaith Carmody and Michelle Obama (sure, why not?)All tips and insights are brought to you thanks to De Facto Shaving Oil - the world's best shaving oil. In today's episode, we discuss the University of Limerick's part-time and online Masters in Artificial Intelligence, Ireland's largest masters programme in AI, with the course director Dr. Pepijn (Pep) van de Ven. UL started this Masters programme in the autumn of 2018 in close collaboration with ICT Skillnet, ICHEC and a large number of Irish industries with an interest in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This programme is unique in Ireland in that it was developed fully from scratch based on industry needs and requirements for upskilling the Irish workforce in AI and machine learning. Moreover, the programme was developed with fully online delivery in mind and this has shown to be a key strength of the programme. It may be of interest to our listeners to know that the UL MSc in AI starts with a Certificate in AI that is delivered together with ICHEC. This Certificate forms an integral part of the masters but results in a separate qualification. It allows participants to dip a toe in the water before committing to the full masters programme. In this certificate, students will take part in two modules, which prepare them for the rest of the masters, but also provide a good overview of what it means to work with machine learning. This Certificate also allows UL to consider candidates that may not normally have access to a masters degree programme and many students have made use of this opportunity already. In this podcast, some past and current students also provide feedback on the programme. Prof Mike O'Riordain, one of the students from the first cohort who graduated recently, speaks of the importance of peer interaction and how such interaction is fostered within the programme. He also mentions the unique ethics element of the UL course and that students should be prepared to work hard, but that UL supports students with a well-structured programme. Fabiola Faria, a current student on the programme tells me about the opportunity she has had in the Certificate part of the course to learn about Python and refresh her maths skills and knowledge. She also has some good advice regarding the necessity to have a good study plan and keep time for family and friends. Colin Byrne, who also recently graduated from the course, mentions the opportunities he believes the Masters in AI will give him in his career and speaks of how the UL course supported him in getting back into the routine of studying after 20 years in industry. Colin is also very positive about how the UL course makes peer learning and communication central to the learning experience and sees this as a big plus for the UL course. You can learn more about UL's part-time, online Masters in AI on the UL website at: www.ul.ie/gps/artificial-intelligence-msc-online or by contacting Pep at pepijn.vandeven@ul.ie. As students on this course are normally entitled to Skillnet funding, please also check www.ictskillnet.ie/training/national-msc-in-artificial-intelligence-online/ for information on this financial support. Applications for this programme will open in June 2021.

In today's episode I chat with Colin Byrne (MCGREGOR FAST), Connor McGregor's S&C coach, close confidant and stable mate. Colin is one of the three main directors behind McGregor Fast, including Dr Julian Dalby and Connor McGregor himself. Where to start with Colin. Well, the standard story of growing up in Dublin in the 70s/80s/90s prior to the Celtic Tiger or the countries absorption into the Euro was one of getting a trade and a steady number. Colin could have been a painter and joined other family members in the Guild of Tanners and stayed in his lane. Fierce ambition to go against the grain and a chance meeting, when he took up cycling with his current long-term friend and mentor Dr Julian Dalby resulted in a different path which has led Colin to where he is now. As one of the main intricate members of a tight knit team behind the main man in MMA. Enjoy!

The Ninja returns, we have Colin Byrne on the line for episode #118 of Paddy Holohan’s No Shame Podcast. Colin is a martial artist, film maker, Conor McGregor’s soigneur, FAST conditioning coach & owner of Shinobi Academy Lagos, a full time MMA Dojo. This is Colin’s second appearance on the show, if you missed his epic 2 hour discussion with Paddy back on episode #040, it’s available on Youtube & will give you a good insight into the Serpico Ninja’s back story. On this weeks podcast Paddy & Colin swap burglar stories, one involving nudity & the other involving the kusari. Luckily, both men save the day in their respective accounts of heroism as the culprits are forced to flee the scene empty handed on each occasion. Based on their experiences, Colin & Paddy conclude that intruders can often find another gear through sheer desperation, making them a very dangerous opponent. It’s a sentiment UFC light heavy weight Anthony Smith will echo, having recently experienced a similar situation in his own home. Colin’s Shinobi Vlog has recently made a triumphant return to Youtube & Instagram TV after a short hiatus. The vlog which details the daily life of the Serpico Ninja is a beautiful blend of fitness, style & monologues. Colin begun vlogging long before it was cool, his youtube channel is a chest of hidden gems covering all aspects of his personal & professional life from Lagos to Vegas, including a very special video of Paddy getting his Black Belt back in December. His motivation for creating content is to capture his life while he’s living & to get his story down while it’s fresh in the memory. Byrne has also made a return to podcasting with his show ‘Himself & The Ninja Podcast’ co-hosted with Stephen Lowry. Colin discusses the importance of never underestimating someone, “You never know who you’re talking to. You could be talking to Jesus”. Colin talks about a recent experience where he had a former world champion in his gym, Chiu Kwong Man without ever realising or noticing who he was & laments the fact he didn’t pick up on the signs. It is a philosophy that has served him well in the past, having left a lasting impression on a young Conor McGregor after a brief encounter years before. Little did Colin know that he would end up becoming an integral part of his team. Colin gives us an update at how Conor’s getting on with his McGregor fast programme during quarantine & what he feels is next for the Notorious. So much more weird, random & wonderful stories from this weeks podcast. It’s always a pleasure to have the Ninja on the show. The man of many & endless talents, he even fixed his car on his latest vlog. The full episode #118 of Paddy Holohan’s No Shame Podcast is available now across all the usual platforms including YouTube, iTunes & Spotify. Check it out now, it will give you a laugh.

This week, on the PRmoment podcast in the latest of our life stories series, I’m pleased to welcome Molly Aldridge, Global CEO of M&C Saatchi Public Relations.Molly has worked for both large and small agencies, independent and networked. She joined M&C Saatchi Public Relations in 2012. The company has a fee income of circa £10m and employs circa 100 people. Here is what Molly reveals: [00:03:32] The importance of PR being a good place for parents to come back to work after having children. [00:04:36] Why PR as a sector needs to make sure that it looks after working mums and dads otherwise you lose a whole set of talent certainly within the industry at a time when PR firms are struggling to find sufficient talent. [00:05:27] Why Molly's time at Cohn & Wolfe was such an important job in her career. [00:05:45] What makes a good public relations practitioner today. [00:06:50] Why PR needs great people brokers. [00:08:34] How sometimes a hotbed of exciting young agency talent can splinter to launch a number of different agencies. [00:10:00] Why an agency has to keep its momentum up. [00:10:03] Why the type of clients are a really important part of an agency’s momentum. [00:10:03] How an agency can lose its momentum. [00:12:29] The difference of working for a big agency compared with an independent agency. [00:14:57] Why you need to be a lot more autonomous, a lot more proactive and a lot more entrepreneurial in a smaller firm. [00:15:23] Why Molly's time at Henry's House was critical to the success of Slam. [00:15:46] Why success is a mixture of hard work and luck. [00:18:10] How the opportunity to create and lead Slam came about. [00:18:45] Why the launch of Slam would not have worked without Scott Wilson's sponsorship. [00:19:58] Why the launch of Slam worked when so many other consumer offers of large PR firms have failed. [00:20:20] Why rapid agency growth is much easier if you grow as your clients grow. [00:23:30] How Slam managed to grow at 30% year on year with a profit margin of 30% in the consumer PR market. [00:24:59] Why was Colin Byrne such a good mentor to Molly? [00:26:43] Why in a “US holding company world” you need someone at a senior level to have your back. [00:28:19] Why did Molly leave Slam - which she had grown to a multi-geography global PR firm - to join M&C Saatchi PR which at the time had a fee income of less that £1m? [00:31:08] Why the right opportunities should make you excited and terrified in equal measure. [00:31:37] Why Molly felt she'd taken Slam as far she could. [00:31:42] Why, because of its US-based ownership, Molly felt (at the end) the relationship was getting a bit parent-child like. [00:33:10] How Molly and Chris Hides have taken M&C Saatchi Public Relations from a fee income of circa £1 million to over £10 million. [00:33:54] Why growing an agency business quickly is really about relationships, people and hard work. [00:35:53] The mystery of why there is not more cross pollination of clients in multi-discipline marketing firms. [00:37:56] the In the absence of global British brands how has Molly grown M&C Saatchi Public Relations globally. [00:40:26] Why the partnership between Molly and Chris Hides works so well. [00:44:38]

Today we're interviewing Colin Byrne, CEO of Weber Shandwick UK and EMEA – in the latest of our series of interviews with some of the most high-profile leaders in UK public relations. By day Colin is CEO of the UK's most award-winning PR firm, with 35 years’ communications experience, by night he's a writer, aspiring novelist and musician. His PR experience spans domestic and international public relations. He joined Weber Shandwick in 1995, rising to lead the public affairs practice in London in 1997. He is now CEO of the firm’s UK and EMEA network and a senior member of the global management team. He’s recently announced he’ll be stepping down after more than 20 years at the helm. After several years in private and not-for-profit sector PR, Colin joined the British Labour Party’s communications team in 1987 and was quickly promoted to head of press and broadcasting. He was press aide to Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Jack Straw. He is a visiting fellow at The Reuters School of Journalism at Oxford University and a trustee of ActionAid UK and The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Colin and I discuss: How he began his career in public relations, finding himself as a press officer at the Automobile Association having previously been unaware that PR existed! How he was very interested in politics from a very early age. Why a letter to Peter Mandelson (then comms director at the Labour Party) in response to an interview Mandelson had done with the Guardian transformed Colin’s career. Why having a mentor was critical to his success. Why Colin never wanted to work for a PR agency. How he enjoyed his time “as a reasonably prominent moth around the Blair flame”.. The challenges of being an agency CEO. The importance of PR people embracing new technologies. Why he’s planning on going “from a well-remunerated senior PR professional to being a penniless aspirant writer”.
