Today we have a special guest joining us. Dr. Kaliym Isalm is an author and the founder of The TrainingPro Academy. He also runs a boutique educational consulting firm and works as an Assistant Professor of Practice at Southern Illinois University. Kaliym has written four books and, in this episode, we are talking about his most recent, The 12 Inch Rule of Leadership. When Kaliym joined his fraternity, he had to memorize a 12 inch rule. What he came to find over the years is that those who could recite those 12 rules on command (even long after they first joined the fraternity) had a much steeper career trajectory than those who forgot the rules. This launched Kaliym into an in-depth research project which turned into a book. Throughout our conversation, we talk more about this process of bringing The 12-Inch Rule of Leadership to fruition. We also get into Kaliym's educational and career background and discuss some of his best leadership principles. Tune in to learn from the many varied experiences of Kaliym Isalm. In this episode, you will hear: Kaliym's experiences in the Air Force. How he got into education. The two phrases that sum up his leadership: innovation and taking chances. How he leveraged technology to make a difference. The importance of value-based learning. Where Kaliym came up with the idea for The 12 Inch Rule of Leadership. What the book covers. Today we are excited to have Frank Cupersmith with us. Frank is the CEO and former owner of RowCal, an association management company. The really interesting thing about Frank is that he decided exactly how he wanted to exit his business. This is something all of us could learn from. Every entrepreneur is going to leave their business somehow. You may sell it, it may fail, or you may even die as the owner. Regardless, you're going to leave somehow; you might as well do it by design. This is exactly what Frank did. He was able to sell his company and now has more freedom in his life. We are thrilled to have him on the show to talk about this process and what it did for both his company and himself internally. If you're looking to learn from a strong exit strategy or simply want to make a difference the way that Frank has made a difference, tune in. In this episode, you will hear: Frank's background in real estate. What his experience of going out on his own and launching a business was like. How he and his partner built momentum in their business. How they started acquiring people and building trust. The importance of investing in your employees. The difference between being an investor and being an owner of a business. How to release people that don't align with your core values. In this summer entrepreneur series, we have been talking with business owners all over the spectrum. Some run eight-figure businesses and some run smaller ones. Today, though, we wanted to introduce an entrepreneur who is within the genesis of his business. A lot of early entrepreneurs don't put the right systems in place right away. They don't lay the necessary foundations for building a strong business. So I thought it would be really helpful for all of you emerging entrepreneurs who have experienced this struggle to hear from someone who is just a few steps ahead of you. Brad Houston is the owner of Guy's Sewer and Drain, a drain cleaning business in the Twin Cities/Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Today he is joining us to talk all about his journey to becoming an entrepreneur and the process he has gone through until now to grow his business. In this episode, you will hear: Brad's career history. What drove him to entrepreneurship. Why advocacy is so important to him. His vision for Guy's Sewer and Drain. As you likely already know, in an entrepreneurial journey, no one starts out as an entrepreneur. Take my story for example. Straight out of college, I jumped into the nonprofit world. After years of struggles and pay cuts, I became extremely passionate about the budding entrepreneurs I was meeting and the big dreams they carried. It was at this point that I decided to step out on my own to help them and, in that, became an entrepreneur myself. We're smack dab in the middle of a series on entrepreneurship where we've been highlighting a lot of our clients. However, today we wanted to switch it up a bit by expanding on the story I told above. I'm going to share all about my entrepreneurial journey and that of our team here at Experience Leadership. There are five lessons that I've picked up over the last decade of being an entrepreneur. During this amazing time of supporting entrepreneurs and leaders within our communities and around the world, I had to learn these five lessons over and over again. They not only apply to me though; they've been practiced by many of the leaders that I've had the privilege of working with over the years as well. Tune in to learn these five keys to being a highly successful entrepreneur. In this episode, you will hear: Entrepreneurs are driven by something beyond money. Why we dig deep beneath the surface with our clients. Entrepreneurs are humble enough to both teach and learn. Entrepreneurs focus on the things that matter. There are two types of entrepreneurs: technicians and visionaries. Entrepreneurs are aware of their limitations. The importance of connection and relationships in entrepreneurship. Greg also spent 12 years playing professional football and was even the first African American punter in the NFL. For the past 22 years, he has served as the sideline analyst for the Minnesota Vikings radio network. Finally, Greg is also a professional speaker who inspires leaders and organizations to shift the atmosphere, flip the field, and get a leg up on life. Obviously, Greg has a lot of (and a very diverse range of) experience and expertise to bring to the table. Tune in to hear his entire keynote speech and learn all about the power of preparation and opportunity. In this episode, you will hear: How Greg became a punter. The power of our words. Businesses exist to help others to bring value to others. But they're so busy doing it, that sometimes they can't sum up why they do what they do, or what difference they are making, or the problems they're truly solving for others. A lot of people have websites and online presences that have been just their branding. Their products have been forced into these boxes. But they haven't really thought through what makes them different. Today's leadership spotlight is on Mark Zubert, founder of One Wheel Marketing. With over 20 years of marketing communications experience, Mark has a passion for partnering with small business owners to help them get their message out and highlight how they're impacting lives. This summer, we're focusing on entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. We want to celebrate amazing entrepreneurs who are out there crushing it in their fields. To do so, we're going to be interviewing a lot of business leaders. It can be really easy to view these kinds of leaders as superhumans. They do so much and they do it excellently. Because of this, we wanted to take some time to not only celebrate the victories of some of these “superhumans,” but to also talk about some of their challenges. Everyone encounters roadblocks along the way; it's a part of our shared humanity. To kick us off, I'm talking with Reuben Saltzman. Reuben is the CEO and primary callgiver at Structure Tech Home Inspections. Though they are located in Minnesota, their impact is felt nationwide. Reuben and his team have done some incredible things in the industry they're in so tune in to hear from him today. In this episode, you will hear: Who Structure Tech is fighting for. The pitfalls of being a charismatic leader. How Reuben found ways to empower people who just wanted to be followers. Why education is Structure Tech's top priority. How they've expanded their training program. The importance of taking care of your people as an entrepreneur. Today, I'm not sharing a traditional interview as I usually do on the show. Instead, I'm inviting you to jump into a conference in which I recently got to participate. The conference was put on by The Inspired Leadership Academy and it was a great time to educate learners along with my fellow speakers. In the talk I'm sharing with you today, I teach the three beliefs you need to shift within yourself. Most of us spend our lives looking at ourselves. It's our human nature to be selfish. However, the problem with this is that we're looking at a distorted reflection of ourselves or at just a snapshot of our lives. To find what matters in life, we need to change the way we think and view the world. Tune in to learn how to do this. Throughout the talk, I'll help get you on the path towards achieving the purposes for which you were designed and the things to which you were called. In this episode, you will hear: The false identity many of us grew up believing. How understanding our true identity shifts our entire life. The 3 things we need to do to see ourselves differently and achieve our purpose. Why our reflection never represents who we truly are. Why we need to challenge the picture we have of ourselves. How opening a window can change our life. What really matters in life and how to find it. Subscribe and Review Share your thoughts and ideas with us and email me at stephen@experienceleadership.com. What if I were to tell you, “You should be more wrong”? You’d likely be a bit surprised. Throughout our entire lives, we are told--whether implicitly or explicitly--that we should aim to be right. When we get something wrong or have to correct ourselves, we inherently feel embarrassed and like we need to improve in some way. Colin Hunter is on a mission to reverse this mindset. He just came out with his new book titled Be More Wrong in which he explains why he preaches this message of being more wrong and learning fast from it. Colin also facilitates mentors, coaches, individuals, and teams in the areas of leadership presence, personal brand change, leadership and innovation, strategic dialogue, creating board-level influence, and earning a seat at the executive table. As a result of his work, his clients have shown award-winning differences in the ways they lead. Today we are having a conversation on Colin’s book and his message of “be more wrong.” Tune in to learn how to help your screw-ups add to your success as a leader. In this episode, you will hear: Why leaders are more effective when they’re having fun. How freeing up our thoughts can help us make better decisions. Indicators that someone is at a tension point between pain and freedom. The dangers of living too long in a place you’re not supposed to be. What causes some leaders to continually lose their top talent. Why mentors are necessary. The importance of getting into rougher seas in your organization. Why Colin’s organization uses actors to train leaders. How he helps people with imposter syndrome. Why introverts may make the best leaders. Life is made up of time, time is measured in moments, and moments are defined by decisions. Therefore, if you want to know the quality of a person’s life, look at what they did with their time. Today we are sharing a talk I gave for Accelerated Global Connections on this very topic. My talk was titled “The Power of Now.” In it, I dive deep into the idea that most people spend their life not looking at what’s going on right now. They don’t move toward their preferred future because they’re spending all their time in the past. Tune in to hear the whole talk. You’ll learn how to make the most of every one of your moments, make your visions a reality, and reach your preferred future. In this episode, you will hear: The cognitive filter that we form in our brains at age 6. The 3 sections for memory in our brain. How our brain limits us. The 4 steps to take to stop living in the past. What effective vision boards should look like. How to break old patterns of thinking. Why I think most human beings don’t celebrate enough. One of my favorite quotes by Les Brown says, “Don't worry if you fall flat on your back. If you can look up, you can get up.” Amy Langer and the rest of her team over at Salo, LLC exemplify this so well. If you tuned into last week’s episode, you heard some of Amy’s story. She founded her staffing services company shortly before the recession of 2008. When that financial crisis hit, it revealed some major weaknesses in her organization’s structure. However, Amy and her team were too stubborn to give up their dream. In fact, they did the exact opposite. They hired a coach, created a strategic plan, and just kept pushing. Today, Salo is an 85 million dollar company. Tune in to hear the rest of their journey towards that incredible success. In this episode, you will hear: The clear decisions Amy and her team made during their financial crisis that started the momentum they have today. Why we need to change our mindset from saying we’re stuck to saying we’re choosing to be here. How to instill trust within your team so they own their decisions. Why Amy decided to diversify her team. How to develop diversity in your team’s quality of thinking. How to give up control in your organization. When you think of a 100 million dollar company, you probably think of a CEO who was born for the role. You most likely assume she was cut straight from the cloth of parents who mentored her and let her sit on their laps in their big corner offices. Most people believe that is what it takes for someone to eventually own such a successful business themselves. However, that is not Amy Langer’s story. She is the co-founder and owner of Salo, LLC, an 85 million dollar recruiting and staffing services company. Amy has driven the company's growth through brand affinity and by leading innovative strategic initiatives. All of that and she was raised on a farm. In this episode, Amy and I talk all about her company’s success. We discuss their meteoric rise at the beginning, the challenges they encountered in the middle, and how they recovered and scaled their business to nearly nine figures. If you want to learn how to pivot and navigate any kind of tricky terrain in your business, tune in to my interview with Amy. In this episode, you will hear: What Amy’s childhood experience was like. Where the idea and passion for Salo came from. What growing up on a farm taught Amy about business. What her team looked like early on. How the recession helped them develop and clarify their vision and mission. What they did to make it through the recession and the shifts they made as a result. We are all interconnected in this world. As leaders, we can’t afford to have tunnel vision. We must look out not only for the interests of those within our own communities. Instead, we must be intentional about preserving everyone to whom we are connected in any way. This is especially important as we approach one whole year of dealing with COVID-19. I’m so excited to bring back a special guest to talk more about this today. Dave Muhovich joined us last to provide his insight as a healthcare professional into COVID-19. Dave is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Bethel University and has not only knowledge of but direct experience working in the midst of deadly diseases. Tune in to hear his perspective on this pandemic and how it’s affecting the landscape of our country. In this episode, you will hear: The shift that would have to take place to make our country more focused on health than disease. The social consequence of wearing masks. The improvements in the COVID-19 vaccine that must be made for us to be able to stop wearing masks. Why we need to rebuild trust with healthcare providers. The human element of solving problems that goes beyond the lab. The 3 circles of honesty and how to bring them together to get the full picture of the truth. It’s been one year since COVID-19 first affected our lives, yet we’re still grappling with it. No one expected it to last this long. Now, all of us just want to wrap up the conversation around this virus. As that is going on, it’s important for all of us business leaders to understand how the situation applies to us, as well. How are we supposed to move forward in our organizations and companies when we take into account all the ways the world has changed over the past year? In this episode, we’re diving deep into this topic to help you understand the answer to that question. To help me out, I brought on a healthcare professional. Dave Muhovich is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Bethel University who has spent a great deal of time wrestling with this issue of the pandemic and how it has impacted businesses. David lived and worked through the HIV epidemic and spent time in Africa during the Ebola crisis, so he brings a solid background of wealth and insight to all the challenges that we're facing with COVID-19. Tune in to hear our conversation on the actual information about this pandemic. In this episode, you will hear: The similarities between the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ebola crisis, and the AIDS epidemic. How project management played into the speed at which the COVID vaccine was produced. The diversity of opinions regarding the severity of the virus that Dave has seen in the healthcare industry. How the disparities in the healthcare system have been exacerbated during the pandemic. How some countries were able to minimize the damage of COVID-19. Why prevention is more important than a cure. We all have one thing that dominates our thinking. It is our aspiration and the image that drives us. That image gives clarity to where we are going and what we decide to do with our lives. It is the thing that ignites us and sparks us to that next level of making a difference. Rather than getting obsessed with the journey of finding your purpose, take the time to discover that dominant image. Then take the necessary steps to pursue that. This is where passion really lies. This week, I invited an expert on these ideas to talk more about them: Phil Rose from Ignium Consulting. He started out as an engineer for Rolls Royce, but in 2005 launched his own strategy consulting business. Phil is now an ICF Certified Professional who is passionate about inspiring people to find their purpose to step up, scale-up, and change. Not only is Phil an amazing coach, but he also hosts his own podcast and even holds a Guinness world record. Tune in to hear our incredible conversation on purpose and passion. In this episode, you will hear: What made Phil realize he wanted to go down the managerial route rather than the technical route. How he got into consulting and coaching. How the importance of passion and purpose led him to start Ignium Consulting. Why consistency is the key to business success. How to decipher your purpose. Boiling your purpose down to one word. How to balance responsibility and the things you can’t control. Why you should start taking action before you know your purpose. How to become an active participant in releasing your inner genius. A lot of people get disgusted with the word “management” and they would often argue one should always be a leader, not a manager. They always want to make this distinction between management and leadership – as if one were bad and the other was good. And so, one of the largest mistakes within an organization is that people don't have someone who will manage anymore because they only want leaders. The fact is, we need both these two. We need great managers just as much as we need great leaders. In today’s episode, Nicky J. Davies joins us, along with our very own Dr. Stephen Crawford – two leaders and visionaries – as they discuss the core of leadership. And part of leadership is to recognize that managers matter just as much as leaders do. Both Stephen and Nicky have extensive backgrounds in executive coaching and corporate training, each having served in the U.S. and around the world. Today’s discussion is around helping leaders and mid-level managers become the best versions of themselves through inspired leadership. In this episode, you will hear: How can a manager juggle their competing priorities effectively? Why we need both leaders and managers in an organization The reason some people are disengaged and what you can do as a leader Steps a leader can take to activate a person’s full potential Why motivation is a symptom and understanding a person’s high-priority values How to operate in balance – between disconnection and micromanagement The biggest challenge managers have faced during with the impacts of COVID-19 and the opportunities we’re seeing How to avoid Zoom fatigue The next best step for a manager to level up their leadership Subscribe and Review Share your thoughts and ideas with us and email me at stephen@experienceleadership.com. One of the things this whole pandemic has led us to is this craving for human connection. Just look at how your Facebook friends list has probably grown over the past year or the number of Zoom meetings you’ve attended. Indeed, there is power in human connection. But how do we truly connect with other people? Do we bring out our authenticity, talk about our strengths, vulnerabilities – warts and all? Or do we carry this facade and hide behind a veneer because we’re too scared of being judged by other people? In today’s conversation with Jason Todd, he talks about his podcast, Coffee with Humans, which started as a social experiment around authentic human connection. With everything happening around us today, Jason got this idea that people were descending almost into hopelessness and a lot of fear. The whole point of his podcast is that we have this facade of who we are – of this holistic self, of successes and failures, and of hopes and fears. We always live life with a veneer. But it’s okay to go deep. This is the reason Jason Todd created his podcast: to be able to provide a space for people to do that. In this episode, you will hear: How Jason created Coffee with Humans as a social experiment Living life with a veneer, having this facade of who we truly are How the isolation has made people question what do we all have to prove Examples of some interesting conversations he has had on the show Every story is powerful if you look for it. Our actions take place first than our beliefs and our beliefs can run completely contrary to facts. The 2 types of false humility that could be hiding behind the veneer Why people end up hiding behind their veneer (the core of this is our identity!) This is the first of a three-part interview with Jennifer Smith, the founder and CEO of Innovative Office Solutions as we grace this series on the Secrets of a Scalable Entrepreneur. Jennifer started her entrepreneurial path when she didn’t have any choice but to run their family business. She essentially redesigned it based on her background and knowledge and grew the company from a million dollars to $12 million in just less than two years before she actually sold it. Jennifer created Innovative Office Solutions in 2001, at a time of the 9/11 crisis and a triple-hit recession in the U.S. when every industry was suffering. As a leader, carrying such weight was not an easy task. But she still managed to inspire people to love what they do and who they do it with. If you're a leader looking to scale and you think you've hit your limits, Jennifer is going to speak into our lives and our leadership today! In this episode, you will hear: How she got into running their family business Creating her own company and how 9/11 influenced the culture of the company Lessons she learned from scaling their family business The importance of reflecting on your core values especially in times of crisis Subscribe and Review Share your thoughts and ideas with us and email me at stephen@experienceleadership.com. Everybody loves to buy, no one likes to be sold. And that’s because humans have this defense mechanism where they don’t want to be influenced or persuaded by other people for fear that they might be led in the wrong direction. As a leader, part of your challenge is to master persuasion so you can influence your team and sell them on the vision, the dream, and the mission of your organization. Influence is all about changing behavior, and part of that is changing the way you believe about yourself. In other words, self-mastery. Your results are a reflection of what you believe about yourself. They’re the mirror image of what you truly believe you deserve. And until that shifts, you will consistently live at the level of your belief. Remember, you don't live at the level of your dreams, you live at the level of your belief. So, how do you build your belief to the next level? In this episode, we’re giving your great insights into how you can tap into the power of persuasion so you can master this skill. This is the fifth and final installment of The 5 Most Effective Leadership Practices. Today's final leadership practice is centered around building an infectious environment. In some ways, it's the job of the leader to create or build that environment that allows, enables, and encourages their team members to bloom. This skill requires breathing encouragement, affirmation, and celebration into people. As humans, it's ingrained in our nature to crave a positive feedback loop and to seek validation and affirmation. Encouragement propels us forward in any environment. When we're being encouraged, we can deal with much stronger challenges and much more resistance. This is when people really begin to bloom. And that's the way we want all of our team to feel. So they can take that energy into their meetings, their client interactions, and essentially take that energy into their home. This internal and intentional work indeed makes all the difference. Have you ever thought about turning your business into a game? Well, everybody has been playing different games. Some play for the status, others play for the social interaction they get. There are also others who get into the game for the minimum work possible while some love playing this game of being seen as the expert in their field. As a leader, the difference lies in getting everybody to play the same game – where you’re moving in the same direction and looking at a clear vision. That way, you’re able to channel all of their energy to the best of their creativity. Joining me today is Reuben Saltzman, a second-generation home inspector with a passion for his work. He worked for Structure Tech since it was purchased in 1997 and is now the owner and President of the company. He also shares with us some best practices they’ve implemented within their organization. In this episode, you will hear: How Structure Tech came about Creating a culture of autonomy How to minimize your attrition rate The power of getting feedback and knowing your worst The different games people are already playing within the organization The need for leaders to actually lead How to create a winning team Subscribe and Review Share your thoughts and ideas with us and email me at stephen@experienceleadership.com. Passion is a great thing. It's what makes the world go around. But when does passion become too much that it tends to limit and restrict your growth? This week, we learn about the concept of blinded passion as we bring in Deborah Anthony on the show today. She talks more about it as well as other great takeaways from her book, Beyond The Limits: A Journey To True Passion. Deborah is also leading our group coaching program at Experience Leadership. A little backstory here – when Deborah got fired from a previous job, she decided to write a book because she didn’t want such a painful experience to go to waste. Her book is a great reminder that we all have hardships that we need to go through in life. And the biggest lesson she wants everyone to walk away from is the power of taking personal ownership. In this episode, you will hear: Blinded passion: How does passion limit and restrict your growth? Creating the difference between activity and progress How do you combine your whys?
