This week we are bringing back John Petersen, rower, family man, principal, and one of my favorite guests from 2020! At the end of 2019 John had a very unique adventure as he joined a team of five other guys to complete "The Impossible Row". The first completely manpowered row of the treacherous Drake Passage from Chile to Antarctica. In the last episode we talked right after this event and I wanted to bring him back on to hear his reflections a year out. What lessons from the row has he continued to use in everyday life? What was it like to view the documentary of such a wild adventure? ("The Impossible Row" is now on Discovery+ and was excellent!) How has he been changed by his first expedition? We also get a chance to dive deeper into the row itself as we talk the brutality of the storms in the Drake Passage, the formation of a brotherhood with his fellow rowers/adventurers, what it was like endure day after day of intense rowing for nearly 13 straight days. This is a great conversation with an incredible human being and I am honored to be able to have John back on the show. Hope you guys enjoy!! John, thank you so much for sharing wisdom, stories and captivating my imagination! What’s the likelihood of someone being born on a futon in a commune going on to walk across Antarctica (and live to tell about it)? Like… a gazillion to one. Well, Erik Huberman had the pleasure of talking to the one and only Colin O’Brady. The 35-year-old has already accomplished more than most of us even dream about doing: summiting Mt. Everest, winning a triathlon, writing a New York Times bestseller (The Impossible First). In this episode, Colin and Erik chat about… The importance of having a supportive figure in your life How to take the first step towards a big goal Why it’s important for kids to see exciting, real-life applications of STEM methods Why you should be asking, “Why not me?” For more interviews like this one, subscribe to HawkeTalk on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!
"The idea of impossibility and possibility is entirely self-determined. And, it is our personal responsibilities to identify the potential sticking points and reframe them as growth points. We have to commit the effort, the time, and the energy to venture into the unknown. That is the most effective way to conquer your own impossible first." Welcome back to another episode of Discover More. This week, we have another episode of Discover More Books, where we’ll be reviewing and discussing the book, “The Impossible First” by Colin O'Brady. The Impossible First tells the story of how Colin O’Brady became the first person to cross the landmass of Antarctica, completely unassisted and unsupported. The expedition spanned 54 days, with absolutely zero companionship or supply drop offs. This required pulling a 375 pound sled for 932 miles through temperatures as low as -112 degrees Fahrenheit. While the journey itself is powerful & inspiring, we believe the true value of this book lies in the lessons, mindsets, and approaches to life that Colin shares throughout his journey. When he was visiting Thailand at age 22, he severely burned his legs during a flaming jump rope accident. He was told he would never walk again, shattering his identity as a high-level endurance athlete. However, instead of focusing on the negative, his optimistic mother challenged him to set a goal and take the first step during recovery. Colin set a goal of running a triathlon, a seemingly impossible goal for someone in his position. Through his patience, visualization, and hard work, Colin went on to not just complete, but win the Chicago triathlon, just two years later. This story illustrates the very ethos of the Impossible First, that anything is possible if we remove the limits we put on ourselves. He believes that we are the stories we tell ourselves, and by re-writing these narratives, everyone has the power to change what is possible. We highly recommend reading this book, not just for the entertaining story, but also for the profound and inspiring lessons that O’Brady shares. We’d really appreciate it if you could leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, as it really helps the podcast grow. We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More Books. Thank you.
The growth that happens within adversity can ultimately lead us to really positive outcomes in the long run. If we understand and learn how to harness it. Colin O’Brady learned this lesson first hand after a tragic accident that landed him in the hospital compelling his mother to flee to his side, which happened to be at a hospital in Thailand. Her consistent positivity during Colin’s healing process set Colin on his way to the life-changing mind-shift that ultimately lead to his record-breaking, adventure seeking achievements. The record-holding explorer discusses the mindset needed for doing impossible things.
Colin O'Brady is an author, triathlon athlete, speaker, and an adventurer who is a four-time world record speed holder after conquering some of the largest and most terraneous mountains known to man. In 2008, Colin suffered a terrible accident resulting in 25% of his body suffering severe burns but instead of simply giving up, he decided to change his life to defy the odds. For the last 11 years, he has continued to hone his craft and explore new challenges while encouraging others to reach new heights. In this episode… What lies at the summit of the human condition? How can we push beyond our physical, mental, and emotional limitations to achieve our goals? Colin O'Brady takes on the world's largest mountains each year to challenge his mental and physical capabilities. And as he climbs each summit, he hopes to inspire people to push beyond their own limits and reach new heights. Join Ed O'Keefe in this week's episode of Wake Up Minute as he talks with Colin O'Brady, a four-time world record speed holder, about his incredible journey from burn victim to breaking his first world record. Listen to these near-impossible feats as one man continues to push the limits to the highest summits the world has to offer. Stay tuned.
“My mantra is: you're strong, you're capable.”Colin O'BradyIf you ask this week's guest what drives his success as a multiple world record breaking adventure athlete, his answer just might surprise you. It's not grit. It's not talent, perseverance or focus. Instead, it's infinite love.Returning for his fourth appearance on the podcast, Colin O'Brady is here to elaborate.Longtime listeners are well acquainted with Colin's story from burn victim to boundary eclipsing adventurer. Even if you're new to the podcast, chances are stumbled across his story by way of his appearances everywhere, from the Today show to the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. For the unfamiliar few, Colin is a former Yale swimmer turned professional triathlete enjoying a third act as an elite adventure athlete with 5 breathtaking world records to his name.Notable among his many palmarès, Colin is both the youngest and fastest human to complete The Explorers Grand Slam — a challenge of exceptional prestige that encompasses scaling the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and treks to both the North and South Poles. Not only did he demolish the previous record by an astonishing 53-day margin, along the way he simultaneously broke the 7 Summits world record by two days.Last year, Colin became the first person in history to cross the continent of Antarctica solo, unsupported and unaided. Under nothing but his own power, Colin pulled a 300-pound sled 932 miles in just 54 days across the coldest, windiest, most remote continent on earth from the Atlantic to the Pacific via the South Pole. It's a jaw-dropping feat of athletic prowess, stunning endurance and sheer human will that captivated millions and made headlines across the world. Then, just last month, Colin and five crewmates successfully completed the first and only human-powered ocean row across the Drake Passage — a treacherous 13-day, 600 nautical mile excursion from the southern tip of South America to the edge of Antarctica — aptly titled The Impossible Row -- chronicled in a mini-series produced by Discovery.Colin's latest accomplishment coincided with the release of his new book, The Impossible First. Dubbed by Kirkus a "brutally sublime tale of derring-do that transports as well as teaches”, it's a memoir that chronicles his incredible life and the many lessons learned about human potential, possibility, and the power of infinite love.If you missed our previous conversations (RRP#207, RRP#235 and RRP#439), they're an excavation of Colin's origin story growing up on a commune. How he survived an almost lethal burn accident that left him unlikely to walk again. His phoenix-like transformation into a professional ITU triathlete and Olympic hopeful. And how he morphed into a mountaineer with the audacity to attempt such incomprehensible feats of adventure athleticism is well worth the time invested.Today we pick up where our ongoing series last left off.Note: we recorded this conversation many months ago on January 18. My initial plan was to share this episode on February 9. However, on February 2, National Geographic published an article entitled The Problem With Colin O’Brady - a 7,000 word take down that accuses Colin of embellishing his accomplishments. It’s an upsetting piece that left me confused. I’ve known Colin for many years. I’ve spent quite a bit of time with him and his wife Jenna. I consider him a good friend. And myself a decent judge of character. However, in light of this development, it also felt tone deaf to release the podcast as scheduled. So I put a pin it.Two weeks later, Colin published a thorough, 16-page point-by-point refutation of the National Geographic article.I thought it only fair to provide Colin an opportunity to comment on the allegations. So, on March 8 (still pre-pandemic), we sat down again for a subsequent conversation to discuss the controversy particulars.Today I share both conversations. First, the original interview we conducted in January. It's an exploration the hows and whys behind The Impossible Row. The intention behind his new book and the process of birthing it. And a deep dive into human potential and the infinite love that fuels his.Immediately following this initial exchange is an additional 30-minute discourse specific to the National Geographic scuffle appended to the audio version of the podcast and viewable as a stand-alone piece here & below. The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube -- where we separated the main podcast conversation and Colin’s thoughts in response to the article into two distinct videos. And as always, the audio version streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. As Colin and I are both fond of repeating, we all sit atop mountains of untapped potential. May this conversation help you tap yours.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsAthletic Greens: 75 whole food sourced ingredients designed to optimize 5 key areas of health, Athletic Greens is the delicious daily habit that sets you up for a healthy future. Among his feats are the world’s first solo, unsupported, and human-powered crossing of Antarctica, speed records for Explorers Grand Slam and the Seven Summits; and reaching the highest point in all fifty US states in a record-breaking twenty-one days. Colin O'Brady is a professional endurance athlete, motivational speaker and adventurer. His new book "The Impossible First" documents his adventure as the first person in the world to travel across Antarctica unassisted. https://amzn.to/2u9mXtG
Portlander Colin O’Brady has a new book about his much-lauded solo trip across part of Antarctica in 2018. It’s called “The Impossible First.” Earlier this week, we talked with Aaron Teasdale who covered the trip as it was happening for National Geographic Magazine and recently wrote an in-depth followup article digging into the claims O’Brady made before, during and after his Arctic trip. Colin O’Brady joins us to respond to Teasdale’s investigative reporting in National Geographic.
Colin O’Brady is a world record holding explorer and one of the world’s top endurance athletes. Fresh out of college, Colin had a vast world of possibility in front of him when a tragic accident left him hospitalized. Unsure if he’d ever walk again, his injuries covered nearly 25% of his body, primarily damaging his legs and feet. Despite the odds, his mother encouraged him to dream big and he dared to set a seemingly impossible goal that set him on a path to rethink what’s possible. Professional outdoor adventurer Colin O’Brady has a new book about his much-lauded solo trip across part of Antarctica in 2018. It’s called “The Impossible First.” Adventure and travel writer Aaron Teasdale covered the trip as it was happening for National Geographic Magazine. But now, Teasdale’s latest article in the magazine looks deeper into the claims made by O’Brady in promoting the project and the subsequent book. We talk with Teasdale about his reporting.
Colin O'Brady is a professional endurance athlete, author, and motivational speaker. In his book, "The Impossible First" he shares his journey from a tragic burn in the pacific to becoming the first person in the world to travel across Antarctica unassisted. (Photo Credit: Discovery) On Christmas Day, 6 athletes stepped foot onto Antarctica. Almost two weeks earlier they pushed off from Cape Horn, the southern most point of South America, rowing in hour and a half shifts to become the first people to successfully cross the infamous Drake Passage completely man-powered. Through sheer will, determination and positivity they conquered not only world records, but their adventure of a lifetime. Today's podcast is about this quest. It's about the formation of brotherhood, bravery in the face of extremes and the power of Mother Nature. What it's like to go into the ocean only to be tossed around like a rubber ducky in the world's biggest bathtub and the lessons you learn when you come out the other side. The team battled cold water, wind, and powerful waves that are nearly impossible to imagine. The Drake Passage had never previously been rowed for a reason, it is beyond ferocious. Now imagine rowing it, day after day while battling sleep deprivation and fatigue. It is the definition of epic! This one is unlike any adventure we have featured on this show and bringing us the story is John Petersen, a dad, a husband, an elementary principal, a former collegiate rower, and, most importantly, a guy willing to step outside his comfort zone to pursue adventure! In this episode, John dives into all things "Impossible Row". What led him to Antarctica, preparations the team had to make, how he handled the hard times, and lessons he learned from each one of his accomplished shipmates (Captain Fiann Paul, Colin O'Brady, Andrew Towne, Cameron Bellamy, and Jaime Douglas-Hamilton). There are so many lessons shared in this episode and I absolutely cannot wait for you guys to listen!! I highly suggest checking out John's teammates (who are all very accomplished athletes in their own right) and the Discovery Channel Youtube Miniseries based on the expedition. It will blow your mind!! The impossible row, Colin o'Brady crosses the Drake Passage on the Ohana with 5 mates on manpower alone.
Eva recently came home from school excited to invite a man named Colin O’Brady on the Dream Big podcast. When we asked her why she wanted Colin to come on the podcast, she explained that her incredible teacher Ms Angel shared with the class that Colin and his team are currently attempting to row across Drake Passage - from the southern tip of South America to Antarctica. This has never been done before, which is no surprise given that Drake Passage is the most dreaded bit of ocean on the globe. In order to accomplish this feat Colin and his crew of six will be rowing 24 hours a day in a perpetual 90-minute rotation for 21 days straight. The crew will endure the iciest waters in the world, freezing temperatures, high winds, up to 50ft-high ocean swells, all while operating on limited sleep. We did some research on Colin, and it turns out that this is not the first time he has attempted to do something that had never been done before in human history. Eva was so inspired by Colin’s story and his Ted Talk that she decided to create this episode about Colins’ journey. She also shares some of the other world records he has set, and one of the main takeaways she learned from his Ted Talk. We hope that when Colin is back home and rested that he will come on the podcast to share his incredible story, and the secrets to how he has repeatedly been able to accomplish his “impossible” dreams. Colin O'Brady is the world's greatest Endurance Athlete. There I said it! Hear me out... When was the last time someone did something for the very first time, yes Eliud Kipchoge broke an unbreakable record in going sub 2, but with all due respect to that amazing achievement. Colin spent 54 days in the harshest environment on Earth to be the first person to cross Antarctica solo, unaided and unsupported. This achievement itself would be impressive, if it wasn't for the additional world records Colin holds. All in all, his belief is that no Human is Limited. It's hard not to be inspired by Colin and I am privileged to share this incredible conversation from earlier this Summer. If you’re subscribed to the INNERVOICE emails and read our features you’ll have seen that things have been a little quiet of late. That’s mostly due to the work I’ve been doing with the team from 29029, if you haven’t heard of 29029 before, Colin gives a great description of the event and the community that surronds the weekend experience. Basically you have 36 hours to hike a private mountain as many times as you can until you reach 29,029 feet, representing the vertical gain of Mt Everest. I’ve been lucky to attend the 2 events in 2019, and have shared the stories of the incredible humans who participate in this challenge. Many of them pushing themselves further than they ever thought possible. In the spirit of INNERVOICE, which as you know is a platform to acknowledge the incredible feats of athletes and the mindset it takes for them to get to the top. 29029 provides that opportunity in spades. One of the co-founders of 29029 and friend Marc Hodulich, introduced Colin and I. Today you’ll hear his incredible story. I am stoked to bring it to you, I have no doubt you’ll learn something new and interesting about him and yourself. He gives us all permission to dream bigger, and start, simply by taking one step at a time. I have no doubt, given everything that he has achieved, that Colin is indeed the World’s Greatest Endurance athlete. As you heard, Colin has a book coming out very soon, titled ‘The Impossible First’ - you can pre-order a copy now. Also, if you’d like to join the 29029 community and participate in a 2020, registration goes live today at 11am, (October 29, 2019) or if you’re listening in the future, you may have already missed out. Either way head to 29029everesting.com and while you’re there hit the stories tab to check out some amazing stories from a ordinary people doing extraordinary things. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/innervoiceaudioexperience/message
ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause https://sites.google.com/pcc.edu/esolnewsoregon/2019-01/2019-01-26-antarctica Text of article: (JANUARY 26, 2019) Colin O'Brady is from Portland. He is a professional athlete. He has won many contests. Last month, Colin walked across Antarctica. In fact, on December 26, 2018, Colin became the first person ever to walk across Antarctica without help. He finished before another man doing the same thing at the same time. Colin's trip was 921 miles. The trip took 54 days. He walked, and he used skis. He pulled a plastic sled with his things, such as food and clothing. Colin was alone. He had no car, airplane, or snowmobile. Nobody brought him extra food, fresh water, or new clothing. The weather was very cold. Sometimes there was a lot of snow and wind. That is called a whiteout. He could not see far in a whiteout. Colin said, "When it’s blue sky and you’re on [high ground], you can feel so small. It’s just endless, and you’re like this tiny little speck. You can look [everywhere, and] there’s nothing. There’s no tree, no building. You are the only tiny little thing out there in this endless sea of light. So that makes you feel small. But then when it’s whiteout, it’s the opposite ... all I can see is my compass a couple inches away from my nose." Colin has one suggestion for others: Bring extra skis. Read by Eric Dodson. Subscribe to the podcast: https://qurantalk.podbean.com/ Quran translation on iOS:https://apple.co/2C1YGXj Additional Resources: http://www.masjidtucson.org Contact: qurantalk (at) gmail (dot) com [35:37] They will scream therein, "Our Lord, if you get us out of here, we will work righteousness, instead of the works we used to do." Did we not give you a life-long chance, with continuous reminders for those who would take heed? Did you not receive the warner? Therefore, taste (the consequences). The transgressors will have no one to help them. Straw that broke the camels back [3:155] Surely, those among you who turned back the day the two armies clashed have been duped by the devil. This reflects some of the (evil) works they had committed. GOD has pardoned them. GOD is Forgiver, Clement. Messenger deviate we would have stopped the revelation to him [12:24] She almost succumbed to him, and he almost succumbed to her, if it were not that he saw a proof from his Lord. We thus diverted evil and sin away from him, for he was one of our devoted servants. [17:73] They almost diverted you from the revelations we have given you. They wanted you to fabricate something else, in order to consider you a friend. [17:74] If it were not that we strengthened you, you almost leaned towards them just a little bit. [17:75] Had you done that, we would have doubled the retribution for you in this life, and after death, and you would have found no one to help you against us. Garment of righteousness to protect from sin [16:81] And GOD provided for you shade through things which He created, and provided for you shelters in the mountains, and provided for you garments that protect you from heat, and garments that protect when you fight in wars. He thus perfects His blessings upon you, that you may submit. [7:36] O children of Adam, we have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of GOD's signs, that they may take heed. [7:196] (Say) “GOD is my only Lord and Master; the One who revealed this scripture. He protects the righteous. [3:173] When the people say to them, "People have mobilized against you; you should fear them," this only strengthens their faith and they say, "GOD suffices us; He is the best Protector." [3:174] They have deserved GOD's blessings and grace. No harm ever touches them, for they have attained GOD's approval. GOD possesses infinite grace. History of Joseph becoming the Treasurer of Egypt How did Joesph behave when these events took place in his life? Every day we have a choice do we want to draw closer to God or farther away Our outcomes are not about a single decision but a ripple effect of the millions of decisions we make throughout our life Can’t control the winds but we can adjust the sails Just like a no one drop makes an ocean or one grain of sand makes a beach no life is made from one single decision, but instead from a multitude of decisions we make throughout a life Colin O’Brady on December 26, 2018 he became the first person to cross Antartica alone without any assistance. 54 days 930 miles walking. Hiked 12 hours a day pulling ~400lbs on his sleds. Climbed ice bridges, pushed through climbing snow and had to endure temperatures as low as -80 degrees Fahrenheit. [13:11] Shifts (of angels) take turns, staying with each one of you—they are in front of you and behind you. They stay with you, and guard you in accordance with GOD's commands. Thus, GOD does not change the condition of any people unless they themselves make the decision to change. If GOD wills any hardship for any people, no force can stop it. For they have none beside Him as Lord and Master. When is the best time to plant a tree? [8:53] GOD does not change a blessing He has bestowed upon any people unless they themselves decide to change. GOD is Hearer, Omniscient. Example of Pharaoh [20:43] "Go to Pharaoh, for he transgressed. [20:44] "Speak to him nicely; he may take heed, or become reverent.” Pharaoh had the potential to be good, he chose to become arrogant [23:46] To Pharaoh and his elders, but they turned arrogant. They were oppressive people. [10:75] Then we sent after them Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his group, with our proofs. But they turned arrogant; and were transgressing people. [Jonah 10:90] We delivered the Children of Israel across the sea. Pharaoh and his troops pursued them, aggressively and sinfully. When drowning became a reality for him, he said, "I believe that there is no god except the One in whom the Children of Israel have believed; I am a submitter." [10:91] "Too late! آلآنَ For you have rebelled already, and chose to be a transgressor. [10:92] "Today, we will preserve نُنَجِّيكَ your body, to set you up as a lesson for future generations." Unfortunately, many people are totally oblivious to our signs. [4:81] Not acceptable is the repentance of those who commit sins until death comes to them, then say, "Now I repent." Nor is it acceptable from those who die as disbelievers. For these, we have prepared a painful retribution. Comparison between Pharaoh and Jonah [21:87] And Zan-Noon (Jonah, "the one with an 'N' in his name"), abandoned his mission in protest, thinking that we could not control him. He ended up imploring from the darkness (of the big fish's belly): "There is no god other than You. Be You glorified. I have committed a gross sin." [21:88] We responded to him, and we SAVED HIM وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ from the crisis; and thus we SAVE نُنْجِي the believers. [37:139] Jonah was one of the messengers. [37:140] He escaped to the loaded ship. [37:141] He rebelled and thus, he joined the losers. [37:142] Consequently, the fish swallowed him, and he was the one to blame. [37:143] If it were not that he resorted to meditation / glorification المُسَبِّحينَ (on God), [37:144] he would have stayed in its belly until the Day of Resurrection. [37:145] We had him thrown up into the desert, exhausted. [37:146] We had a tree of edible fruit grown for him. “Hell is when the person you became meets the person you could have become.” Our decisions have ripple effects [19:75] Say, "Those who choose to go astray, the Most Gracious will lead them on, until they see what is promised for them—either the retribution or the Hour. That is when they find out who really is worse off, and weaker in power." [19:76] GOD augments the guidance of those who choose to be guided. For the good deeds are eternally rewarded by your Lord, and bring far better returns. [2:74] Despite this, your hearts hardened like rocks, or even harder. For there are rocks from which rivers gush out. Others crack and release gentle streams, and other rocks cringe out of reverence for GOD. GOD is never unaware of anything you do. [6:43] If only they implored when our test afflicted them! Instead, their hearts were hardened, and the devil adorned their works in their eyes. Heart = Galb also means mind [41:5] They said, "Our minds are made up, our ears are deaf to your message, and a barrier separates us from you. Do what you want, and so will we." [60:13] O you who believe, do not befriend people with whom GOD is angry, and who are hopelessly stuck in disbelief; they are just as hopeless as the disbelievers who are already in the graves. Someone who never thinks of their evil behavior as evil, but righteous will never repent [4:62] How will it be when a disaster hits them, as a consequence of their own works? They will come to you then and swear by GOD: "Our intentions were good and righteous!” [40:56] Surely, those who argue against GOD's revelations without proof are exposing the arrogance that is hidden inside their chests صُدورِهِم / minds , and they are not even aware of it. Therefore, seek refuge in GOD; He is the Hearer, the Seer. //see 40:19 [Iron 57:16] Is it not time for those who believed to open up their hearts for GOD's message, and the truth that is revealed herein? They should not be like the followers of previous scriptures whose hearts became hardened with time and, consequently, many of them turned wicked. God created a world where our true convictions will be brought out [47:29] Did those who harbor doubts in their hearts think that GOD will not bring out their evil thoughts? [47:30] If we will, we can expose them for you, so that you can recognize them just by looking at them. However, you can recognize them by the way they talk. GOD is fully aware of all your works.[47:31] We will certainly put you to the test, in order to distinguish those among you who strive, and steadfastly persevere. We must expose your true qualities. [47:20] Those who believed said: "When will a new sura be revealed?" But when a straightforward sura was revealed, wherein fighting was mentioned, you would see those who harbored doubts in their hearts looking at you, as if death had already come to them. They were thus exposed. [33:12] The hypocrites and those with doubts in their hearts said, "What GOD and His messenger promised us was no more than an illusion!" [3:154] After the setback, He sent down upon you peaceful slumber that pacified some of you. Others among you were selfishly concerned about themselves. They harbored thoughts about GOD that were not right - the same thoughts they had harbored during the days of ignorance. Thus, they said, "Is anything up to us?" Say, "Everything is up to GOD." They concealed inside themselves what they did not reveal to you. They said, "If it was up to us, none of us would have been killed in this battle." Say, "Had you stayed in your homes, those destined to be killed would have crawled into their death beds." GOD thus puts you to the test to bring out your true convictions, and to test what is in your hearts. GOD is fully aware of the innermost thoughts. [33:22] When the true believers saw the parties (ready to attack), they said, "This is what GOD and His messenger have promised us, and GOD and His messenger are truthful." This (dangerous situation) only strengthened their faith and augmented their submission. [2:249] When Saul took command of the troops, he said, "GOD is putting you to the test by means of a stream. Anyone who drinks from it does not belong with me—only those who do not taste it belong with me—unless it is just a single sip." They drank from it, except a few of them. When he crossed it with those who believed, they said, "Now we lack the strength to face Goliath and his troops." Those who were conscious of meeting GOD said, "Many a small army defeated a large army by GOD's leave. GOD is with those who steadfastly persevere."
How does a regular person with fears and doubts go from abject failure to breaking world records? Colin O’Brady suffered a critical injury so bad that a doctor told him he would probably never walk properly again. So, he climbed Mount Everest. “We all have reservoirs of untapped potential. The biggest thing standing in our way? Our minds.”Colin O'BradyLife has taught me one essential truth: the human spirit is boundless.Just when you think we’ve reached the absolute pinnacle of what’s physically possible, someone performs a feat so utterly mind-bending you're left breathless. The skies of perception part. Blanketed in awe, we’re compelled to re-evaluate our own personal capabilities. And humanity is left just a little bit better than it was before. This is the sensation I experience when I spend time with Colin O'Brady – a former Yale swimmer turned professional triathlete turned elite adventure athlete with 4 breathtaking world records to his name.Colin's latest jaw-dropping feat of athletic prowess, stunning endurance and sheer human will was becoming the first person in history to cross the continent of Antarctica solo, unsupported and unaided. Under nothing but his own power, Colin pulled a 300lb sled 932 miles in just 54 days across the coldest, windiest, most remote continent on earth from the Atlantic to the Pacific via the South Pole.Colin first appeared on the podcast in December of 2015 (RRP 207) — a deep dive into his unique upbringing on a commune; how he survived an almost lethal burn accident that left him unlikely to walk again; his phoenix like transformation into a professional ITU triathlete and Olympic hopeful; and how he morphed into a mountaineer with the audacity to attempt incomprehensible feats of adventure athleticism. After conquering the Explorer’s Grand Slam, a challenge that encompassed scaling the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and treks to both the North and South Poles, Colin returned to the podcast in June of 2016 (RRP 235). Among the 44 who have completed the EGS, only 2 have done it under a year. Not only was Colin the youngest person to successfully complete this most prestigious undertaking, he crushed the world record by a stunning 53-day margin, completing it in a mere 139 days. Along the way, he simultaneously broke the 7 Summits world record by two days.Today he returns to share his most remarkable achievement to date, a freeze solo adventure he dubbed the Impossible First. It’s a jaw-dropping story you might have seen unfold in real time on Colin’s Instagram (@colinobrady) or in the stellar 360-degree New York Times coverage penned by my friend (and former podcast guest) Adam Skolnick.Uncovering the why behind the expedition, we explore how he dealt with the gear, solitude, -80F temps, and 30 mph headwinds. He explains why to sweat is to die. We discuss his battle against the elements and British Army Captain Louis Rudd — the legendary explorer who also set off the same day with the same goal in his heart. We talk about Colin’s final day 77-mile, 32-hour superhuman push to the finish. And Colin explains how a phone call with a certain musician changed his entire perception on who he is.But mostly this is about a man who uses endurance and adventure as art that speaks to the heart and soul of the human experience. The visually inclined can watch our entire conversation on YouTube at bit.ly/colinobrady439 (please subscribe!) and as always the podcast is available on See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

THOSE WHO SAY THEY CAN AND THOSE WHO SAY THE CAN'T ARE USUALLY BOTH RIGHT. Any time you try to do something great, there are going to be critics. That’s impossible. That’s crazy. You’ll never be able to do that. But the biggest doubter is often yourself. How can we master our minds and quiet our fears when we are striving for greatness? It’s about pushing past our limits and tapping into a flow state. We are full of limitless potential. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk with a man conquered his own doubts to break records that many said were impossible: Colin O’Brady. Colin O'Brady is a professional endurance athlete, motivational speaker, and adventurer. On Dec. 26, 2018, Colin became the first person in history to cross Antarctica solo, unsupported and unaided. It was a 932-mile expedition completed in 54 days. At the end of his expedition across Antarctica, Colin tapped into a flow state that allowed him to finish without stopping. He used mantras and visualization to push past his limits. He now wants to share those tools with you. So get ready to learn how to do the impossible on Episode 775. Some Questions I Ask: Why do you want to do these challenges in the first place? (17:00) How do people push through physical and mental barriers? (20:30) What were you saying to yourself the final 12 hours of your journey? (36:00) How important is the support of your wife, Jenna? (49:00) What’s your mission moving forward? (52:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: How Colin broke The Explorer’s Grand Slam world record (8:00) How Colin used the “Forrest Gump Effect” (15:30) The mantra that helped Colin get through his toughest journey (27:00) How swimming and meditation can help you get into the “flow state” (29:00) The story of Colin’s burn accident in Thailand (40:00)
Exploring some conventional sports records and the odds some of them might ever be broken. But, I want to challenge peoples perceptions of records and give props to those who break somewhat unconventional records. Such as, Colin O'Brady who, among his many accomplishments became the first man to traverse across Antarctica, unaided, unsupported, dealing with bitter cold, and the ever present danger of not making his goal and suffering ill effects in the process. Also thanks to Fox 8 meteorologist Scott Sabol for his expertise. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/john-telich/message
Host Luke Burbank and announcer Elena Passarello discuss not-so-classic “Ice Breakers;” endurance athlete and adventurer Colin O’Brady recounts his world record-breaking trek across Antarctica; author Dani Shapiro explains how a mail-in DNA test revealed a deep-seeded family secret; comedian Chris Garcia pokes fun at his life choices by channeling his hard-working Cuban father; and Casey Neill & The Norway Rats perform “Savages” from their album “Subterrene.”
Colin O'Brady is a professional endurance athlete, motivational speaker and adventurer. He is a three-time world record holder, and just became the first person in the world to travel across Antarctica unassisted. In 2016 he set the Explorers Grand Slam and Seven Summits speed records.

“As humans, we have so much capacity.” - Colin O'Brady In this first Paternity Leave episode, we listen to the Life Athletics Podcast by Nik Wood where he talks with Colin O'Brady, a professional endurance athlete, public speaker, and a holder of world records. Colin holds the record for the fastest man to complete the Explorers Grand Slam, having finished it in just 139 days. In the process, he also became the fastest man to climb The Seven Summits, completing everything in 132 days. As if these weren't enough, he became the first person to ever Snapchat from the summit of Everest! He once met an accident and was told that he would never be able to walk again. That, however, didn't stop him from reaching the summit of his dreams. Listen and be inspired in this episode where Colin shares how his determination led him to not only break records but also become a bridge for other people in achieving their dreams. What you'll learn in this episode: Colin's accident in Thailand and the support his mother gave him How Colin started his journey as an endurance athlete What Colin went through to earn his world records How Colin is now inspiring others to achieve their dreams Quotes: “As humans, we have so much capacity.” - Colin O'Brady “‘This is not permanent', which allows me again to not suffer as much in the moment even when it is painful.” – Colin O'Brady “The most meaningful things in life are things that require a little bit of struggle, a little of sweat, a little bit of challenge.” – Colin O'Brady “The things that you look back on your life, the things that are the most meaningful oftentimes require a little bit of challenge up on the way to really fully realize the entire experience.” – Colin O'Brady “'What are the things that apply across the board?' And what I've realized is being in service to others and being around other people that are on their journeys.” – Colin O'Brady “I think there is so much to learn in these quiet moments of the in-between that really fuel the next step, not because you should set the next goal but to be intentional about the way you spend your time and with your life.” – Colin O'Brady “Look within, before you look without.” – Colin O'Brady "Look for what really lights you up... and go after that with all your heart." - Colin O'Brady Continue the Adventure Colin O'Brady Colin O'Brady on Instagram Beyond 7/2
On the newest episode of the WholisticMatters Podcast Series, professional endurance athlete Colin O'Brady discusses with John Troup, PhD, the idea of pushing the limits of human potential, for this is what O’Brady did to become the first person in history to traverse the continent of Antarctica from the tip of the Ronne Ice Shelf to the tip of the Ross Ice Shelf, via the South Pole – unsupported and unaided. O’Brady talks about why he uses social media to reach and inspire people and about how important it was to receive the proper nutrition to achieve the impossible in Antarctica. He also describes the mantra that kept him going throughout his journey, happy and calm or tired and discourged: “This too will change.” Don’t forget to listen to our other podcast with Colin O’Brady, where he talked about inspiring others by asking them, “What’s your Everest?”
Hey everyone, today’s episode is going to be a special one. When I was thinking of potential guests for this show, I kept returning to the idea that it might be a really fun opportunity to use it as a means to reconnect with someone in my past that I haven’t had a deep conversation with in some time. And I thought of my brother, who as you will see in this episode has led nothing short of an interesting life. That being said, I hadn’t really talked to him beyond superficially about his experiences and I certainly had not asked him about what some of the major lessons were that he has learned in his crazy journey to Japanese Zen Monasteries and how that has translated back into living back in the western world. Corey and I have shared so much in this life and I have loved being a part of his Odyssey, but it was both eye-and heart-opening for me to get a chance to sit down and talk to him about the wisdom he has gained throughout his trials and tribulations. Some specific highlights include his discussion of how to get over the struggles of meditation – pretty much everywhere you look these days, you hear about the benefits of mindfulness, but MANY people that I talk to have tried and pretty quickly given up – here is your chance to learn from a guy who says he has been in meditation gunfights! Corey also really talks about some of his mentors and how valuable it is to attach yourself to someone that inspires you. Above all, I think Corey’s is a lesson of patience and passion. Many that know him have wondered at times what he was doing with himself and where he was going. Let’s be honest, it is easy to get caught up in the normalcy of life expectations, but not everyone has the dream to be a lawyer or a doctor and who are we to stand in the way of anyone’s search for an outlet for their intensity – to put out the fire burns inside them? I have recently been enthralled by the solo and unaided journey of Colin O’Brady across the length of Antarctica. No doubt to most sensible humans this seems crazy and you couldn’t pay them enough to even give it a shot, but many, many people have been inspired by this adventure. There is danger in making these sorts of grandiose comparisons, but bear with me. I believe we can all find lessons from people who are willing to blaze their own trails, people like Colin O’Brady and people like my brother, who you look at now and see a great father, husband, citizen and perhaps most of all a teacher that just might inspire you to tune out some of the ubiquitous and often overwhelming outside influences of our lives and instead take the time to look inward and to trust your heart and mind to take you to where you belong – it has done just that for me. After listening to our chat, even if you aren’t in any hurry to rush out and join a monastery, I hope you get a lesson or two out of this discussion and if nothing else it encourages you to reach out to your loved ones in an effort to better understand them and reinforce the kind of special bond that can be shared by those closest to you. And forgive the background noise that is heard throughout this. We did this chat in person and I hope that the intimate nature of it makes up for some of the light traffic winding through Whidbey Island at times.

Hey Life Athletes, welcome to episode 167 of the Life Athletics podcast! Today’s guest Life Athlete is Colin O'Brady. “Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.” At 22, Colin thought his life was over when what seemed like harmless fun in a remote village in Thailand turned into a nightmare. He was participating in a fire dance with a jumprope; the next thing he knew, his feet was entangled in the rope and he was burning up to the neck. Doctors told him that he would not be able to work properly again. Yet here we are with Colin, speaking to us about stories from completing a triathlon and Snapchatting from the peak of Mt. Everest. “Us humans have these reservoirs of untapped potential inside of us and we can achieve incredible things, particularly when we focus our mind and we commit to the process, and more importantly, when we believe they are possible.” Colin tells us that all things you really want to enjoy in life require some sort of challenge. Not being one to back down, Colin - with the encouragement of his very supportive mother - got up and began breaking ceilings. Since the accident and since getting back in shape, Colin has conquered The Explorers Grand Slam and went on to break two world records. “We aren’t experts, but we are curious enough to wake up every day and keep taking a few more steps.” He's not stopping at all of his achievements. Colin wants others to take a challenge and break records too. So he started a non-profit called Beyond 7/2, which aims to raise awareness and funds to inspire kids and their communities to lead active, healthy kids and pursue their biggest dreams. Join Colin and Nik on this very inspirational episode today.
Colin O’Brady – three-time world record holder and adventurer- is an inspiration to many people. In 2008, he was burned in a fire in Thailand and told he would never walk again. He surprised doctors and family with a lot more than taking a few steps. In 2016, O’Brady became the fastest person to complete the Explorer’s Grand Slam – a challenge to climb the tallest mountain on each of the seven continents. The current record for this challenge is 139 days, still held by O’Brady. Then, in the summer of 2018, he became the fastest person to climb the tallest mountains in each of the 50 United States, breaking the previous record of 41 days with his own record: 21 days. When O’Brady isn’t breaking world records, he’s inspiring kids to get outside and be more active. When O’Brady himself was young, he dreamed of one day climbing Mount Everest. Now he encourages kids to reach their own goals. “I ask, ‘What’s your Everest?’” O’Brady said. “What’s a big goal you have in your life?” To reach his own goals, O’Brady focuses on setting small, incremental goals along the way to reach “massive, audacious” goals. This includes taking steps to make sure his nutrition, physical health, and mental health are at tune with the things he wants to accomplish.

What does it take to stop you from reaching your goals? Are you someone who gives up easily or can you find the strength and determination to push forward in the face of adversity? Why do some people have a “can-do” attitude no matter what obstacles come their way? What is it that makes the difference? You’re about to hear one man’s story that will answer these questions and more about the human spirit and the amazing resilience of the human body. Colin O’Brady is an endurance athlete from Portland, Oregon. He is a two-time record holder, completing the Explorers Grand Slam in a world-record time of 139 days. This challenge has climbers reaching the tallest peak on all seven continents and skiing the last degree to both North and South Poles. Colin is the only person to reach all seven summits in less than 120 days. Fewer than 50 people have ever completed the Explorers Grand Slam, and only 4 have ever done it in under one year’s time. Almost ten years ago, Colin overcame a tragic accident that left him with severe 3rd degree burns and with the news from doctors that he would never walk normally again. Raised in Portland, Oregon, Colin spent his childhood exploring the mountains of the Pacific Northwest and cultivated a passion for adventure in the outdoors. Colin was an active kid and excelled at sports, competing in both swimming and soccer. By the time he reached high school, he was nationally ranked in both sports. Ultimately, he was recruited to swim at Yale where he graduated with a Bachelors in Economics in 2006. The resources to travel internationally weren’t there growing up, so Colin started painting houses in the summers to earn money. After college graduation and before settling into his career, he took a backpack and surfboard and set out to explore the world. In 2008, while in Thailand, Colin suffered a tragic accident and was severely burned in a fire; his injuries covered nearly 25% of his body, primarily damaging his legs and feet. Doctor’s warned him he might never walk again normally. With the encouragement of his mother, Colin was determined to beat the odds. He set himself a seemingly impossible goal: to complete his first triathlon after recovery. A mere 18-months after his accident and after extensive rehabilitation, Colin amazed the sporting world when he not only completed his first triathlon, but he placed first overall at the Chicago Triathlon. After winning his first race, sponsors took note and signed on to support his future. Colin went on to become a professional triathlete and raced in 25 countries on six continents, representing the United States in international triathlon competitions. Six years of professional triathlon was the exact preparation Colin needed when he and his fiancée, Jenna, came up with an audacious plan. Colin would attempt to complete a prestigious mountaineering challenge – The Explorers Grand Slam – in world record time. Without the resources to personally fund the expedition, Jenna and Colin spent 18-months raising the money and gathering the support they needed. On May 27, 2016, the world record project came to a victorious end. Colin conquered The Explorers Grand Slam in a world record-shattering 139 days. Colin summited the tallest peak on each of the seven continents including Mt. Everest and skied the last degree to the North and South Poles. Fewer than 50 people have ever completed this staggering achievement and only four in under a year. With grit and perseverance, Colin became the fastest person to complete the mountaineering challenge, and in the process also broke the speed record for The Seven Summits in 132 days. Colin and Jenna established a non-profit, Beyond 7/2, before Colin set out to break the Grand Slam world record, all in an effort to raise awareness and funds to inspire kids and their communities to lead active, healthy kids and pursue their biggest dreams. Colin’s efforts have impacted hundreds of thousands of children across the country since launching Beyond 7/2. Knowing first-hand what it takes to overcome a serious setback, and the grit and perseverance required to achieve peak performance, Colin shares his story around the world speaking at the likes of Google, Samsung, Mashable’s Social Good Summit, P&G, and other influential Fortune 100 Companies. In the spring of 2017, Colin was invited to deliver a TED talk in Portland, OR. Nearly 1 Million people have viewed his talk online. It was the fastest growing talk that summer, globally.
Two-time mountaineering world record holder, Colin O’Brady, joins me in today’s episode to share his major lessons learned through hardship and adversity that served to inspire him to strive for both personal and professional excellence in his life. Not only was Colin a top level triathlete for seven years, he currently holds the world record for being the fastest mountaineer to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents and journey to both the north and south poles (The Explorer’s Grand Slam challenge). Not only did he become the fastest person in history to do this, he accomplished this incredible feat in 139 days which was 60 days faster than anyone else had ever done. Despite being almost burned to death in a traumatic accident ten years ago in Ko Tao, Thailand and suffering serious burns to 25% of his body, Colin was able to overcome these injuries by setting small achievable goals and work toward these goals every day. In this episode, we dig into Colin’s work ethic and the specific strategies he has put into action that have allowed him to achieve excellence through his work. As well, Colin shares the work that he and his wife, Jenna, do with their non-profit organization, Beyond 7/2. As Colin states in this episode, the number one goal that they have for their organization is to inspire young people to lead healthy lives by being active and by believing in their own ability to accomplish anything that they set their mind to. Colin is wise beyond his years and his insight will surely inspire anyone listening to take more action in their own lives to be the very best that they can be. Colin’s Bio Colin O’Brady was born in Olympia, Washington on March 16th, 1985. The son of an eagle scout, Colin spent his childhood exploring the wilderness of the pacific northwest with his family. He learned about healthy living from his father, an organic farmer and from his mother and step-father, co-founders of a local, natural foods grocery chain. Through passion, dedication, and hard work, Colin grew into a youth sports star. He won Oregon State Championships and received national honors in both swimming and soccer. Colin was recruited to swim at Yale University where he swam all four years. During his time in college, Colin took a leave of absence to pursue a semester-long course with the National Outdoors Leadership School, mountaineering and kayaking in remote Patagonia, Chile. Later, while studying African economic development in college, he traveled to Tanzania, where he caught a glimpse of Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. That day, a dream was born: to climb the Seven Summits. In 2006, Colin graduated from Yale with a BA in economics. The day after graduation, he embarked on a 4000-mile cycling journey from Connecticut to Oregon, with the aim to raise money and awareness for Habitat for Humanity. Before beginning his career in finance, Colin left to explore the world on a backpacking trip. While in Thailand, Colin suffered a tragic accident and was severely burned in a fire. His injuries covered nearly 25% of his body, primarily damaging his legs and feet. Doctors warned him he might never walk again normally, but Colin was determined to beat the odds. He focused not only on walking again, but set himself a goal: to complete a triathlon following his recovery. A mere 18 months after his accident while working as a trader in Chicago, Colin amazed the racing world when he placed first overall amateur at the 2009 Chicago Triathlon. His victory in triathlon sparked a new path. Colin turned pro, and fulfilled his childhood dream of being a professional athlete. Over the last five years, he has represented the United States in triathlon competitions in 22 countries and on six continents. Meanwhile, the distant peaks still called to him: Colin finally summited Mount Kilimanjaro following a race in East Africa, and climbed Mount Fuji after racing in Japan.

After a long hiatus, The More than Mudcast is back with a slam-packed show. The OCR Kings talk about their race recap and tutorial videos which are getting major traffic on YouTube. Colleen Ricks tells how OCR has helped with her healing. Finally, Colin O'Brady is an endurance athlete and world record holding mountain climber... and it all started in a foreign hospital. Very inspiring!
In this episode we get to learn about how Colin O’Brady had overcome challenges that would have derailed most of us, and he has done it with a smile and much aplomb! He came back from a severe injury in a faraway land with the help of his mom, family, and friends to become a top professional triathlete—winning overall in his very first competition! That did not satisfy his passion to help others in tandem with what can be the lonely adventure of climbing expeditions and polar explorations. So he combined them to support youth via The Alliance for a Healthier Generation. So he set out to accomplish the infamous and intimidating Explorers Grand Slam— summiting the world’s seven summits (tallest mountain on each condiment) and going to the north and south poles! He not only accomplished it but he set two world records in the process by being the fasted person to ever do the Grand Slam and broking the speed record for the Seven Summits. Amazing, simply amazing. I have done three of the seven summits (the easy ones), and I can attest the logistics alone can exacerbate the physical challenges. Combine that with the dicey-ness of weather and risk of illness/injury/Murphy’s Law and you quickly see this was an amazing accomplishment in a number of ways. A freak fire accident in Thailand left Colin O'Brady believing that he'd never walk again. Last year, he became the youngest person ever to scale the highest peaks on all seven continents and reach the North and South poles. Of the estimated 45 people to have ever accomplished the dizzying feat, only two finished within a year. He did so in 139 days. Colin O'Brady is an American pro endurance athlete, mountain climber, adventurer, and professional speaker. O'Brady is a two-time world record holder for the Explorers Grand Slam (Last Degree) and Seven Summits speed records. He became the fastest person to complete the adventurers challenges in 139 days and 131 days respectively. He is a former professional triathlete and represented the United States on the ITU Triathlon World Cup circuit, racing in 25 countries on six continents from 2009-2015. In 2007, O'Brady began what was planned as a year long backpacking trip around the world. In January 2008, while on the island of Koh Tao, he suffered a devastating burn injury. O'Brady participated in the local custom of fire jump-roping and was tripped by the burning kerosene-soaked rope. Although he instinctively ran into the ocean to extinguish the flames, he suffered second and third-degree burns to nearly 25% of his body, primarily damaging his legs and feet. 12 hours after the accident, he was transported by truck and boat to a hospital in Koh Samui. After a week and 8 surgeries he was transferred to a larger hospital in Bangkok. The doctors warned him that he might never regain the ability to walk normally. He took his first step the following month. "I was determined to beat the odds and focused all my energy on one day completing a triathlon to prove to myself I could make a full recovery," O'Brady said in a 2016 interview O'Brady moved to Chicago where he took a job as a commodities trader following the accident. He learned how to walk again, and for a year focused on physical rehabilitation. He began to train for triathlon; swimming, cycling, and running. In May 2009 he won a sprint-distance triathlon in Racine, Wisconsin and in August 2009 he placed 1st overall amateur in the Olympic-distance Chicago Triathlon. He then placed in the age-group nationals in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which earned him a position on Team USA at the 2010 World Triathlon Championships in Budapest, Hungary. In late 2009, encouraged by his mentor, financier Brian Gelber, O'Brady quit his job to pursue a career as a professional athlete. With Gelber as a sponsor, he moved to Australia to train in a more temperate climate. O'Brady has since completed more than 50 triathlons, ranging from sprint distance to Ironman competitions. Fewer than 50 people have accomplished the Explorer's Grand Slam, a challenge of summiting the highest peaks on each of the seven continents and completing treks to the North and South poles. Colin O'Brady not only completed the EGS this summer, he shattered the world record for it, finishing in just 139 days. O'Brady also set the world record for climbing the seven summits -- summiting Kilimanjaro in just 11.5 hours. Five years ago, a friend suggested he try mediation and recommended a 10-day silent vipassana retreat. At first O'Brady said he looked at meditation like an elite athlete, hoping to train his body and mind for peak performance, but soon discovered meditation gave him a much greater benefit for his daily life.

Of these 44, only 2 have done it under a year. Not only is today's guest the youngest person to conquer this most prestigious undertaking, Colin O'Brady absolutely smashed the world record by an incredible 53-day margin, completing the EGS in a mere 139 days. Along the way, he simultaneously broke the 7 Summits world record by two days.A Yale grad turned professional triathlete and Olympic hopeful, Colin is one very impressive young man. But perhaps more admirable than his mind boggling achievements is Colin's commitment to service by way of his non-profit organization Beyond 7/2 – a directed mission to combat childhood obesity by raising $1 million on behalf of the Alliance For A Healthier Generation, a non-profit founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation dedicated to helping kids to develop healthy habits. If you are relatively new to the podcast, it's worth noting that Colin and I sat down this past December on the eve of his world record attempt. In case you missed it, RRP 207 is great conversation about his unique upbringing on a commune, his experiences swimming for Yale, how he survived an almost lethal burn accident that left him unlikely to walk again, his phoenix like transformation into a professional ITU triathlete and Olympic hopeful, and how he morphed into a mountaineer with the audacity to attempt such an incomprehensible feat of adventure athleticism.Picking up where we left off, this conversation recounts the highs and lows of Colin's extraordinary accomplishment. It's a conversation about the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fortitude required to push beyond the ceiling of perceived ability. It's a conversation about facing and overcoming obstacles. It’s about life and death decisions. Risk. Limits. Fear. It’s about the indomitable nature of the human spirit to overcome and persevere. And its about the importance of giving back.Specific topics include:* completing The Explorer's Grand Slam in world-record time* conquering Everest after the North Pole* sharing Colin’s experiences through social media* severe frostbite and the risks of amputation* attempting fastest ascent of the 7 Summits* rational fatalism & objectivity* 10,000 hours of deliberate practice* navigating risk & fearIt was an honor to spend a couple hours with this extraordinary human. My hope is that this conversation will help you question your own internal limiters and confront you with the very real truth that we are all capable of so much more than we allow ourselves to believe.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | Soundcloud | Stitcher | See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode, Colin O’Brady, world record holder of the Explorer’s Grand Slam and Seven Summit world records, discusses the value of hard work, patience, and passion.
“For me it’s always been about the journey, about the adventure & about living my passion—that’s been enough reward for me.”Colin O'BradyAs I write this entry, it's Sunday evening, January 10 around 8pm. Less than one hour ago, after days spent slogging across Antarctic desert in -30 celsius temperatures, 30-year old pro triathlete turned mountaineering adventure athlete Colin O'Brady reached the South Pole — the first stop on his world record quest to become the youngest and fastest human to ever complete the Explorers Grand Slam — an adventurers challenge to summit the highest mountain on each of the seven continents as well as trek to both the North and South Poles.Only 44 people in documented history have successfully completed the challenge. Of these, only 2 have done it under a year.Colin's goal? Get it done in five months. If that's not amazing enough, consider that just eight years ago, Colin faced the very real possibility he would never walk again. After graduating from Yale in 2006, Colin left to explore the world on a backpacking trip. While in Thailand, he suffered a tragic accident and was severely burned in a fire. His injuries covered nearly 25% of his body, causing potentially irrevocable damage to his legs and feet.Determined to beat the odds, he set a seemingly outlandish goal to not just walk again, but to complete a triathlon following his recovery. Colin didn't just finish a triathlon. In his first attempt he won — stunning the multisport community with an overall amateur title at the prestigious 2009 Chicago Triathlon less than two years post-accident and after only a few months of training. On the day immediately following his victory, Colin turned pro, quit his job as a commodities trader, hopped a flight to Australia and spent the next five years representing the United States in triathlon competitions all over the world with a keen eye on landing an Olympic berth.Insane. And yet despite his amazing success, Colin sensed something missing from his life. He wanted more. A compulsion to more deeply explore uncertainty and precariousness that fatefully gave birth to the expedition he calls BEYOND 7/2.His inspiration isn't fame, but pure adventure, buttressed by a conviction to land a blow to childhood obesity by raising $1 million on behalf of the Alliance For A Healthier Generation, a non-profit founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation dedicated to helping kids to develop healthy habits. From his hippie upbringing to life at Yale, organic farming on Kauai, and the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fortitude required to succeed in his world record attempt, this is an incredibly inspiring conversation with a young man courageously embracing fear to meet his absolute limits in search of meaning, place and giving back.We cover a lot of ground in today's confab, including:* Explorers Grand Slam history* the logistics behind Beyond 7/2* how to manage fear, risk & unknowns* the difference between poles vs. peaks* climate change impact on the North Pole* the desire to combat childhood obesity* Colin's tragedy in Thailand* Colin's remarkable recovery* Colin's Olympic dream* the discipline of swimming as a springboard* lessons learned from world champions* physical/mental preparation* Colin's daily meditation routineI sincerely hope you enjoy this exchange with a remarkable human. Colin needs all the support we can give so let's put some wind in his sails by taking a moment to send Colin a positive message on social media (links b...
