Picture your students not just passively consuming the written word, but actively producing meaning and taking purposeful actions inspired by what they've read. This is the promise of our conversation with Doug Fisher, professor at San Diego State University and renowned author, as he takes us on a journey into the depths of reading comprehension. We question the effectiveness of common literacy programs and discuss the intricate ties between vocabulary, comprehension, and prior knowledge. How do you feel about the 'letter of the week' approach? Listen as we scrutinize its validity and dig deeper into other foundational reading skills, such as letter recognition and sound blending. We also expose the symbiotic relationship between vocabulary and comprehension, underscoring the pivotal role of knowledge in decoding texts. We then traverse the landscape of oral language in reading instruction and the implications of isolating reading from writing. Can you guess the impact of these practices on student learning? Doug enlightens us on the significance of comprehension strategy instruction and the importance of developing all elements of reading literacy. Welcome to today's episode, where we're exploring the timely topic of inclusive education. As the new school year begins, many parents and educators are thinking about how to create learning environments that truly support all children, regardless of their abilities. Whether you've already made decisions for your child's education or are still weighing your options, this episode will provide valuable insights.  Our guest, Sharon Lowery, is a pioneer in inclusive special education. She has developed a program that welcomes students of all abilities, with a focus on those who learn and think differently. Sharon's approach emphasizes the importance of meeting social-emotional needs and fostering an environment where every child can thrive.  In this conversation, Sharon shares what an inclusive academic setting looks like, how typically developing students and neurodiverse students can benefit from learning together, and why developing emotional intelligence is crucial in a child's education. We'll also address some common concerns parents have about balancing the needs of all students in an inclusive classroom. Join us as we discuss how inclusive education can create a more supportive and enriching experience for every student.   Show Notes: [2:30] - Sharon describes what a fully inclusive academic environment looks like. All children with all academic abilities are welcome. [3:23] - The program Sharon has developed does put a focus on children who learn and think differently, but all students are included. [4:46] - The program is a therapeutic program that meets the needs of all the children who participate. [6:03] - Initially, Sharon was trained in ABA practices and saw benefits, but then began working with Dr. Stanley Greenspan and the DIR/Floortime Model. [7:20] - By understanding the developmental milestones and social emotional development, we can be inclusive of students of all abilities and meet their needs. [8:14] - Sharon shares the differences between a traditional setting and an inclusive environment. [10:07] - Through this model, developing emotional intelligence is important. [12:38] - Children learn from each other. Typically developing students can model for neurodivergent students. [14:53] - We want to build an understanding of differences. As parents, we want our children to be kind and loving. [16:23] - The gifted population also really benefits from an inclusive environment. [19:01] - Sharon describes a scenario that proved the benefits of meeting social-emotional needs in an inclusive environment. [22:48] - A concern some parents have is that the attention needed for neurodiverse students will take away from the needs of the typically developing students. [26:31] - Being inclusive also means being intentional. [29:06] - Sharon describes the start of a school year and what a day might look like in the Smart Start program. [33:21] - Family tours really help ease the minds of parents of neurodiverse children. [35:24] - The small environment gives students an opportunity for a rich and focused learning experience.   About Our Guest: Sharon Lowery holds a BA in Psychology from LAUSD and an MA in Psychology from CSULA. She has advanced post-graduate certification as an Expert Trainer in DIR/Floortime and is a member of the ICDL Faculty, having been trained by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, the creator of the DIR/Floortime Model. In 1992, she founded the SmartStart Developmental Learning Center, where she has served as Executive Director ever since. Imagine transforming the way you teach reading. To cap it off, our conversation concludes with three practical suggestions that you, as an educator, can apply in your classroom for immediate impact. “People have tried to put critical race theory above equity. And to say any word that has any sort of association with a diversity, equity, inclusion theme, that is critical race theory. And it's a bad thing and your kids are being indoctrinated. Your kids are being taught to hate America. And so it does make it challenging,” explains Dr. Sheldon L. Eakins, Ph.D. Dr. Eakins is the Founder of the Leading Equity Center and host of the Leading Equity Podcast. He is also the author of Leading Equity: Becoming an Advocate for All Students. He has over 11 years of experience working in education and uses his background and lived experience to help other educators accomplish equitable practices in their schools. Today, he talks with host D-Rich about how educators can build awareness and practical solutions to racism in schools.    Students of color are represented higher in special education classes and disciplined harsher than their white counterparts. White teachers who do not have a lot of experience with teaching Black and Brown children tend to struggle to relate or to know what to do to make these students more comfortable in school. This is especially true in rural communities and in states like Idaho, where Dr. Eakins resides, that are putting restrictions on what educators can teach their students and what books they can assign in the classroom. It is important for educators to check their biases and recognize the unique challenges that students of color face, so that they can teach content that is relevant and relatable to them.    Educators should take extra time to ensure that they are fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students regardless of what demographics they are. There is no quick and easy bullet point style solution, but Dr. Eakins has created a framework in his book that can be beneficial for educators to follow. In a time when education related to race and equity are being challenged by law, it is more important than ever to ensure that students of color have the support they need.    Quotes • “Whoever's in your classroom, whatever demographics they are, what community they serve, especially in our black communities, we need to make sure that the content that we're providing is relevant and relatable to them.” (11:29-11:40 | Dr. Eakins)  • “White teachers will reach out to me and say, ‘Sheldon, I need a list of strategies in order to reach my Black and Brown kids in my classroom. I don't know how to relate.” (28:22-28:32 | Dr. Eakins) • “The reality is a lot of our teachers aren't comfortable with talking about race.” (36:38-36:41 | Dr. Eakins) • “People have tried to put critical race theory above equity. And to say any word that has any sort of association with a diversity, equity, inclusion theme, that is critical race theory. And it's considered a bad thing and your kids are being indoctrinated. Gender is one of the most contentious topics in the United States today, conversations about gender in education have even been the targets of so-called “divisive concepts” laws in states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and Alabama. The Alabama “divisive concepts” law, for example, would ban any discussion in K12 schools around the idea that Alabama and the United States are “inherently racist or sexist: ” that anyone should be assigned bias “solely on the basis of their race, sex, or religion;” and that anyone should be asked to accept “a sense of guilt, complicity, or a need to work harder” because of their race or gender. However, schools are as much as any other social institution a place where our constructed biases, expressions, and expectations about the performance of gender, leadership, the perceived attributes of students, and our response to student behaviors deeply influence not only the academic outcomes of school but the lifelong outcomes of students themselves. The focus of my conversation today, The Gender Equation in Schools: How to Create Equity and Fairness for All Students, is not a book directed at the culture war's so-called “divisive concepts”, but rather a book for educators and parents desiring a framework for understanding the gendered construction of schooling and its impacts as informed by experience, social science, and neuroscience alike.Joining me today is the book's author, Jason Ablin. Jason Ablin has served as a teacher, department chair, principal, and head of school. He holds national certification in leadership coaching and mentoring from the National Association of School Principals and has been supporting and mentoring new leaders throughout the country for over ten years. At American Jewish University and in school-based teacher workshops, he trains teachers to create gender aware classrooms and has taught year-long courses to teams of educators in graduate level seminars regarding the relationship between cognitive neuroscience and education. Our schools, public or private, primary or secondary, rich or poor are in tumult. They were already institutions that semi-unintentionally bred dominance hierarchies and reinforced unhealthy gender roles, but now the fake controversies around curriculum and teaching are inhibiting the kinds of conversations that can actually make schools safer, more welcoming AND can actually improve test scores. In this episode, Mark and I have a virtual sit-down with “faculty whisper” and school culture expert Jason Ablin. Jason Ablin is the author of The Gender Equation in School: How to Create Equity and Fairness for All Students. With over thirty years in education and educational leadership, he has served as a teacher, department chair, principal, and head of school. As an instructor at American Jewish University's graduate programs for teacher training he helps teachers to create gender aware classrooms and has taught year-long courses to teams of educators in graduate level seminars regarding the relationship between cognitive neuroscience and education. Jason consults with schools across the country to help them create positive culture by: Getting staff on same page with mission and vision, Working on their own adult implicit bias and gender ideas Getting back to putting kids first, building relationships, and having meaningful, caring conversations. Jason, Mark, and I also talk about Three main groups of boys and how they often interact to perpetuate dominance, bullying and harassment. The differential suicide rate and how man box masculinity perpetuates it What steps adults can take to make school better for all kids. Jason Provides a vision for how schools can build cultures and structures that empowers adults and nurtures kids, in particular boys. Dr. Lisa Campos is the VP and Athletic Director at University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). UTSA just recently achieved Research One (R1) Carnegie classification for very high research activity. The school caught national attention this past year from football success and that is a big portion of this episode. Campos talks about playing home games off campus in the Alamo Dome and provides input on the structure of the 10-year contracts in college football. UTSA has also leveraged that football success to join the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in the latest round of conference realignment, which Campos shares her thoughts on the balance of football success and location in conference positioning. Campos has a background in student affairs and explains how she went from working in student affairs to working in college athletics and how she uses that background in her role as AD, including interacting with students on campus in that VP role. Campos also talks about her journey pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at UTEP. Did you know that you are likely the most knowledgeable professional in your school when it comes to language development, assessment, and intervention? Ok, so maybe you already knew that, but do your education colleagues and administrators know? This week's episode tackles the basics of Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) in schools and provides an incredibly strong argument for why SLP's need a leadership seat at the MTSS table. Return offenders, Dr. Trina Spencer and Dr. Doug Peterson, lay out the relationship between an SLP's expertise and the MTSS mission of preventing “dysteachia.” They do this by highlighting the truth: that listening and speaking are the foundation for reading and writing. Not a school-based SLP? If you're working with kids in any context, this cast will offer some amazing gems to add to your EBP tool-box for supporting kids with language learning differences. Tune in to learn more about why the domain of language needs to be included in MTSS frameworks and walk away with some key actionables to start the conversation and build the foundation on MTSS collaboration for language support in your school's culture. You can learn more about Trina and Doug here.Summary Written by Tanna Neufeld, MS, CCC-SLP, Contributing EditorLearning Outcomes1.
