This recording captures the "Isha" call to prayer in the medina of Nabeul, Tunisia. "Isha" is the night prayer, and is announced after dark.  Nabeul has two main mosques in the medina, plus other call to prayers can be heard in the distance. The presence of space is well recognisable due to the various distances of the different Isha calls. Recorded by Colin Hunter.

Despite its relatively small size (330 sq km), Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to almost half of the world's population of wild mountain gorillas. As of 2018, the mountain gorilla was listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. Thankfully, conservation efforts have led to an increase in numbers and the overall population is now believed to be at more than 1,000 individuals. During my time observing the mountain gorillas we spent around one hour in the company of the Oruzogo group, led by Bakwate, the dominant alpha Silverback. In this recording we hear Bakwate vocalising with two females of the group. "Inspired by Colin Hunter's field recording from Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to nearly half of the world's wild mountain gorilla population—Gentle Giants is a sonic exploration of this remarkable environment. Once classified as critically endangered, the mountain gorilla's population has grown to over 1,000 thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. "Colin's recording captures a rare moment with the Oruzogo group, led by Bakwate, a powerful silverback, accompanied by two females. Their vocalisations, intertwined with the rustling bamboo and cracking undergrowth, became the foundation of this piece. "I sought to immerse the listener in the dense, living rainforest—its beauty, its fragility, and its raw power. The dramatic opening unfolds with layers of thunder, rain, and flowing water, evoking the pulse of the wilderness. Every other sound in the piece originates from the original sample, transformed and layered to shape an evolving soundscape. At 2:35 mins the original field recording emerges in its purest form, grounding the listener in the heart of the forest. "A haunting clarinet improvisation by Gareth Stuart was transposed down an octave to resemble a bass clarinet, symbolising the rainforest's mystical spirit. As the storm subsides, the piece returns to tranquility—leaving us with the quiet presence of these gentle giants." Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I've always been deeply fascinated by the sonic characteristics of sacred spaces. One of my very first experiences of field recording was walking into St. Paul's Cathedral in London equipped with a pair of binaural microphones and recording the choral evensong. That night a change in how I perceived sound occurred, as if revealing an alternate dimension. I have since visited many different spiritual spaces - Buddhist Zen temples and Shinto shrines whilst recording in Japan for the British Library Sound Archive and visiting many of the beautiful French churches and cathedrals in Provence where I now reside. I have immersed myself in listening to the subtle atmospheres of these spaces and appreciating how their fragile sonic fragments contribute to creating such intimate listening environments. "In working with this recording, originally recorded by Colin Hunter at Chartres Cathedral on the outskirts of Paris, I was drawn to its sparseness. I had the opportunity to visit this cathedral last summer and remarked at how unusual and impressive its interior was. One thing that caught my attention particularly was this beautiful 14th Century grand organ, which at the time of my visit was under refurbishment. I suppose with this work I imagined a time when this organ would play - filling these chambers with its powerful drone - a comforting accompaniment to the prayers of pilgrims and passers by. The sacred intimacy confined to a shrine, the peace and serenity we find in places of worship, a solitary candle burning slowly… "Working in Ableton 12, I mainly used pitch shifting and granular synthesis techniques to work on sculpting elements from the original recording to form new sonic textures and implement these into a soundscape. I built this from memories and imagination, vague and mysterious much like the sounds we often encounter in such sacred spaces."  Chartres cathedral reimagined by Mat Eric Hart. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. "This composition transforms Colin Hunter's recording, Angkor Temple Music, into a reimagined soundscape that stretches time and space. Using spectral processing, I extracted key sonic elements, allowing me to highlight and reshape the textures within the original recording. "Though I have never visited Angkor Wat, the recording transported me there. The resonant tones of what sounds like a Khim instrument weave through the ambient sounds of birds and the surrounding environment. I expanded on these elements, stretching them into evolving drones and layered textures, creating a meditative atmosphere that blurs the boundaries between past and present." The old way to lead a team (the “command and control” leadership style that says the boss can't make a single mistake) isn't working anymore. If you want to improve your team's performance, you need to fail. Which means you need to be willing to fail in front of your team. In this episode of How to Sell More, Mark Drager and guest Colin Hunter explore the power of making mistakes. Colin, the author of Be More Wrong: How Failure Makes You an Outstanding Leader, says that if you aren't making mistakes, you aren't pushing hard enough.  In Episode 103, you'll learn: ✅ Why strong leadership seems to be missing in government and business in 2025. ✅ How embracing "Be More Wrong" can transform your leadership approach. ✅ Colin's revolutionary four key leadership styles: Host, Energizer, Disruptor, and Catalyst ✅ How to create "playgrounds" where team members can safely experiment and learn. ✅ Why recruiting for humility, hunger, and people smarts is crucial for team success. ✅ The concept of being "antifragile" as a leader by deliberately seeking challenges. Meet today's guest: Colin is the CEO of the global leadership development company PotentialSquared, where he's helped leaders transform their teams for over two decades. How does he do it? Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

For thousands of years, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the south-west of Uganda was home to an indigenous people - the Batwa pygmies. The original dwellers of this ancient jungle were known as “The Keepers of the Forest.” In 1992, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest became a national park and World Heritage Site to protect the 350 endangered mountain gorillas within its boundaries. The Batwa were evicted from the park and since they had no title to land, they were given no compensation. Today many of the original Batwa people have been re-housed on land just outside the Bwindi National Park. I visited one such group who were living in the countryside surrounding Ruhija Village. During my visit they sang and danced as a way of welcoming me to their home. Recorded by Colin Hunter. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"The story behind the migration of the Batwa pygmies from the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest was quite thought-provoking, and it inspired me to research this migration further. The field recording by Colin Hunter is a living example of the indestructibility of the spirit of the forest that the Batwa pygmies carried with them when they were evicted from the forest land in 1992. Being an immigrant myself and a person who has moved a lot, I can imagine the heartbreak and difficulties migration can bring. "The field recording I chose for my composition is a welcome song that a group performed for Colin, close to Bwindi National Park. I had two approaches to compose music with it: one was to remix the recording and create something catchy, or to create an ambient track with a strong imaginary sonic landscape around the field recording by editing it and creating many smaller samples out of it. "I settled on the ambient approach because I felt the recording was truly special, and it must teleport a listener to Bwindi and to the difficult migration story. I also felt the ambient approach would help me highlight a sound or melody from different angles without being too shackled to a structural idea. "I imagined the sonic landscape in my composition as if an observer/listener is walking through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest before the migratory chapter and there's an ongoing celebration. They see different groups singing and dancing, welcoming them while they are surrounded by the greenery of a lush forest and the sheer force of nature unfolding in it. "Perhaps the Batwa pygmies have learned to adapt to new surroundings and new ways of life today, but I think the forest will always remain in their being. To me, Colin's recording beautifully captures how the performing group's song is quintessentially connected with the forest. That's why I have named the composition ‘‘And the Forest Remained in Us.'' Batwa song reimagined by Atúl. Everyone talks about disruption. Disrupting the status quo, the industry, the way we do things with their cool new product or service. But how about we disrupt leadership? How about we learn to embrace failure, build connection, and establish trust as the keys to success? My guest today, author, mentor, and CEO Colin Hunter shares why leaders need to be more wrong in order to be more successful. Today we talk about why leadership needs to be disrupted, a 3-pronged model for how leaders can increase their impact, how to create more resilience and avoid burnout, and why we need to be more wrong and embrace experimentation and play so we can learn faster - leaving ego at the door in order to find success. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways: Self-care and mindfulness are so important. And without it, you do burn out as a leader, especially if you are a good leader and are trying to give of yourself to your team, but it does your team no good if you end up going up in flames.Just like how you recharge your phone every night, you need to do something that recharges you, as a leader, so that you can ground yourself, allowing you to show up better for yourself, your team, and your organization. Utilize the power and energy of everyone on your team. As you lead with empathy and active listening and give them a playground you will see an amazing difference in your team.  "As children, we have this self-clearing mind -  we learn, experiment, play, fall over, fall out with friends, and then we self-clear and we go. But as we grow older, we freeze. If you aren't doing your work, aren't practicing disrupting, learning, experimenting every day, then you've frozen your mind." —  Colin Hunter Episode References: The Empathy Edge podcast, Rebecca Friese: How to Build a Good CultureThe Empathy Edge podcast, Rhonda Manns: Design Thinking in Healthcare and BeyondAtomic Habits by James ClearIDEOSir Ken Robinson, TED Talk, Do Schools Kill Creativity?Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder by Nassim Nicholas TalibCitizens: Why the Key to Fixing Everything is All of Us by Jon AlexanderThe Trusted Advisor by David MaisterAbout Colin Hunter, CEO of Potential Squared and Author, Be More WrongColin Hunter is an author, mentor, coach, and founder of Potential Squared which specializes in creating playgrounds to disrupt the way people are led.  He lives with his family, near London, but originally from Scotland, and still retains his love of the Scottish mountains and the outdoors.  Colin and his team work with their clients to provide leaders and their teams the chance to, as he describes, “Sail their ship out of the harbour and test themselves in rougher seas”.  He is a practitioner and his work and his book are based on personal experience and purposeful practice with his clients.”Connect with Colin Hunter:  PotentialSquared: https://www.potential2.comBook: Be More Wrong  https://www.potential2.com/be-more-wrong/Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/Potential_2LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/colinhunter/Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/potentialsquared2/Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/potential_2/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thecolinhunter/ Don't forget to download your free guide! Co-founders Peyton Jenkins and Colin Hunter created menswear brand Alton Lane in 2009, after pinpointing a gap in the men's suiting market that was just waiting to be filled. They kicked off the company with a store intended to bridge the gap between experiential and retail. It was located on the 12th floor of a 20-story building on Broadway in New York City.  "[Hunter and I] noticed this emerging trend of self-presentation awareness. We were within that crowd, and while we had no fashion or apparel background, we loved the idea of a challenge," Jenkins said on the latest episode of The Glossy Podcast. "At the time, no one was focused on experiential retail ... not like they are today. We thought, 'If we could combine these two things -- better access to fit and a better supply chain -- and through a much better experience, then there was something there.' And we just ran with it."  Since its inception, the brand has become the official menswear partner of BHLDN, Anthropologie's wedding brand. And within the last two months, it launched on TikTok. With both of these moves giving the company a boost, its plans include strong growth in 2023.
