I popped into William Oliver's Publick House a few weeks ago at the end of the day, to grab a quick beer and a snack - and ran into the owner whom I remembered from their early days - Ryan Wallace.  William Oliver's had been a regular lunch-spot for me when I worked at Capital West Bank - a top choice because the staff was always great and they served locally sourced fare in a non-pretentious fashion.  After leaving the bank and becoming Old Town centric in my consumer behaviors though, William Oliver's fell from my rotation for many a season.  But now - it's back on! - even if I have to go out of my way.  When I asked Ryan about being on the podcast, he said “only if we can drink too much bourbon” - and I knew we were going to have a fun time.  What I didn't know is that William Oliver's now has additional locations in Windsor and Lafayette, and that Ryan is not only an incredible spirits expert and armchair historian - he's also a very-business-savvy CEO!  Ryan's journey into founding William Oliver's is all about “why wait?”.  He'd been working in various contracting and consulting roles, fell in love with Publick Houses during a stretch in the UK, and had a dream of “someday” opening a pub in Fort Collins.  His wife Tiffany asked the question “why wait”, and a year later they took over a tiny space that had been vacant for years, in the King Soopers center off Drake and Timberline.  They worked evenings and weekends building out and then staffing the kitchen and the bar (and raising a family) for many a season before they could depart their day jobs. But the concept caught strong from the start, and the location was soon expanded, and later, more locations added!  William Oliver's is a story of passion, smart business, employee engagement, and why wait - and Northern Colorado is richer in deed and in spirit for it.  So, please join me in enjoying my conversation with Ryan Wallace.  The LoCo Experience Podcast is sponsored by: Logistics Co-op | https://logisticscoop.com/

As we've discovered on previous episodes of At Home in Bloomington, some of the best ideas start in a garage or barn. Oliver Winery began as a backyard hobby of Indiana University law professor William Oliver and as most good ideas do, quickly outgrew the barn (sound familiar, Switchyard Brewery?). Professor Oliver was instrumental in passing legislation allowing for the creation of small wineries in Indiana and opened the door for breweries and wineries to sell and serve their craft beverages on site. The Indiana Small Winery Act passed in 1971, and Oliver Winery opened in 1972. Today, Oliver is the state's oldest and largest winery, with over 450,000 cases of wine distributed per year (that's over 1.1 million gallons of wine). On this episode, we're joined by Assistant Events Manager, Dee Peters, and Tasting Room Sales Manager, Ben Smith. We learn that you don't need to know squat about wine to enjoy a tasting at their beautiful winery and that their Creekbend Crimson Cabernet is a delicious treat for a Thursday afternoon! We are doing our part to make a dent in the 1.1 million gallons. So grab a glass and join us!Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 37, Dillman Farm. Another local gem that started in a garage. Head over to Oliver Winery, grab a bottle of wine and some Dillman Farm snacks (you can buy them at Oliver!). You can hang out right there, enjoy the gorgeous property and locally produced snacks and libations! And in our REAL-List segment, home inspections aren't required and there's no pass or fail. So what role does a home inspection play in the home buying/selling process? Listen and find out. Minnesota Supreme Court Oral Arguments

Appellant State Farm Fire and Casualty Insurance Company insured a home owned by respondents Sheila and William Oliver. The home was damaged by a fire. The parties were not able to agree on the measurement of the loss, and the Olivers demanded an appraisal under the terms of their insurance policy. They did not request preaward interest. The appraisal panel issued an award in favor of the Olivers in the amount of $1,143,778. State Farm promptly paid the appraisal award. More than one year later, the Olivers demanded $94,000 in preaward interest on the appraisal award under Minn. Stat. § 549.09, subd. 1(b) (2018). State Farm refused to pay preaward interest. The Olivers filed a motion in district court, requesting that the court confirm the appraisal award under the Uniform Arbitration Act, Minn. Stat. §§ 572B.01–.31 (2018), and grant preaward interest. The district court confirmed the appraisal award, but denied preaward interest, concluding that the request for preaward interest was a request to modify the appraisal award, and was untimely. The court of appeals reversed and remanded, holding that “an appraisal panel lacks authority to grant preaward interest,” and the 90-day deadline to file a motion to modify an arbitration award under Minn. Stat. § 572B.24(a) does not apply to a motion for preaward interest. On appeal to the supreme court, the following issues are presented: (1) whether an appraisal panel may consider preaward interest, and if not, when and how an insured should request that interest be added to an appraisal award; and (2) whether the 90-day window under Minn. Stat. § 572B.24(a) applies to an insured’s request for preaward interest on an appraisal award. (Hennepin County)

6-13-17 We're stepping out of our series featuring amazing home mead makers to take an evening with Bill Oliver, of Oliver Winery. Bill’s father Professor William Oliver started winemaking as a hobby back in the 1960's, and Bill grew that hobby winery into a high quality winery. Oliver happens to make one of the older professional meads in the United States, Camelot Mead. Professor Oliver was instrumental in passing legislation allowing for the creation of small wineries in Indiana. The Indiana Small Winery Act passed in 1971, and Oliver Winery opened in 1972. Sales took off with Camelot Mead, and they've been growing ever since. Oliver Winery isn't just some stodgy old winery, they make mead, cider, and a number of fun wines. They sell their fruit forward wines, ciders and Camelot mead in 18 states. They have recently reformulated Camelot for a new generation, and wanted to come on the show and tell us about it. We're looking forward to seeing what they have to say, and to learning more about how Professor Oliver found out about mead, and what made him decide to make it, and what he's learned in over 40 years of mead making.
