Kicking off the third season of the Worship/Theology podcast, Dr. Jeremy Perigo and guest co-host Dr. Angela Perigo engage with Nick and Becky Drake to explore the importance of including children in worship. Nick and Becky lead Worship for Everyone, a ministry that brings together the big family of God in worship. In addition to leading this ministry, Becky works as a School Chaplain at The Blue Coat School in Birmingham, while Nick is ordained in the Church of England and ministers at Gas Street Church in Birmingham, UK. This episode focuses on the challenges and opportunities of creating an intergenerational worship experience that elevates children and engages adults as they enjoy Jesus. The Drakes share insights from their journey, emphasizing the need to see children as active participants rather than mere performers. Additionally, they delve into the theological foundations of all-aged worship, highlighting the significance of children in biblical narratives and the importance of fostering a community where everyone can worship together. The Drakes encourage church and worship leaders to consider the importance of belonging for children and youth in their churches and the mutual joy that comes from worshipping together across generations.
Join Dr. Jeremy Perigo as he hosts Dr. Melanie Ross, Associate Professor of Liturgical Studies at Yale Divinity School. They explore themes surrounding Evangelical practices and theologies of worship, particularly from Ross' books Evangelical Worship: An American Mosaic (2021) and Evangelical vs. Liturgical? Defying a Dichotomy (2014). Beyond monolithic political assessments of Evangelicals, Ross presents a nuanced and diverse view of Evangelicals and their liturgical identities. Enjoy their discussion surrounding the paradoxes and unique contributions of evangelical liturgical theology.

For the last 10-20 years, church planting has become formulaic and systematized, as large church planting organizations brought corporate practices and values into the church world. This kind of business thinking has created an "industrial church starting complex" that according to author Nick Warnes, needs to be re-examined. In this conversation, we talk about a better model for church starts, the need for churches to shift from internal growth to reproduction, and why denominations are no longer a viable protocol to start new churches. Nicholas Warnes (Masters of Divinity, Fuller Theological Seminary, Emphasis in Worship Theology and Art) is the Founder and Executive Director of Cyclical. He enjoys the regular pattern and rhythm of being both the Executive Director of Cyclical Inc. and Director of Cyclical LA, a ministry of the San Fernando Presbytery in Los Angeles. Nick is also a recognized speaker on church planting, coach for New Worshiping Communities with the Presbyterian Church USA, and is the chair of the board of the Church Planting Program at Fuller Theological Seminary where he is also an adjunct professor (church planting certificate). Nick is the author of several books including Deconstructing Church Planting. Nick lives with his wife, Whitney, and son, Lee, in Los Angeles, CA. A preacher walks into a church. A church member asks him, "Can you please preach on worship." The preacher says, "Sure. I've got a great sermon on John 4:24, 'Worship in Spirit and in Truth'.". The church member says, "No, that wouldn't do. The last three preachers preached on that same verse. Do you have something else?" The preacher thought for a while and said, "Nope. I've got nothing." With today's book, you will know how other books in the Bible, verses other than John 4:24, speak on worship.

Today’s episode is from a webinar hosted by Worship Central Canada. Brooke Ligertwood of Hillsong Worship sat down with Darrell Johnson to continue the conversations they have been having on worship and theology. Covering an assortment of topics, they share with each other what they have seen and are learning about worship in our modern churches. Some of the topics they dive into are around the essentials of worship and what we do not want to lose in the future, along with some of the things they are okay to see fade out (mullets?!). They look at what has changed this past year for both congregations and their worship leaders as many churches have had to move online or have very limited gatherings. Darrell talks about what it means to live in both the seen and unseen when it comes to worship and the importance of remembering we are joining into an already ongoing worship service. Brooke also expresses what she has learned about calling and how we can confuse a calling to lead others into worship with the methods or image of what that can be. They transition partway through into some Q&R from the webinar’s audience, which you can catch on both the podcast and video on the Worship Central Canada YouTube channel. We hope you enjoy this conversation and find it helpful as you consider the heart of worship in your place and time. Makoto Fujimura, world renown artist, talks in depth about his book, Culture Care. He shares his profound ideas about culture being a resource we are called to steward rather than a territory to be won or lost. We talk about the vital importance of beauty to the sustainablity of a thriving culture for generations to come. He describes artists as being "border-stalkers", people who don't quite fit in to one group but those who walk the margins and are able to move from different cultures and people groups. Border-stalkers can become cultural leaders by using beauty and creativity to ultimately connect us to each other. Makoto is director of Fuller Theological Seminary's Brehm Center of Worship Theology and the Arts. He has received four honorary doctorate degrees and is an alumni of Bucknell University. He has work displayed across the globe and has served as a presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003-2009. He has also written a book of essays called Refractions and the award winning book, Silence and Beauty: Hidden Faith Born of Suffering. A closer look at worship from a biblical perspective through our leading, singing and planning. - Music and Worship Is Not Synonymous - A Look At Authentic Biblical Worship - How Theology and Lyrics Intersect - It's Neither Traditional Nor Contemporary - Lyrical Poetry - A Look at the Psalms and our Songs - Reading Through Popular Songs To Biblically Study the Lyrics - Why Does Cooperate Worship Matter? How Do They Connect? - Choosing the Right Song for the Right Time and Reason
Music is one of the oldest forms of religious celebration. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors danced around the fire at the end of the day, singing songs of the hunt and calling upon the Divine to bring success for tomorrow. Great compositions filled European cathedrals with majestic praise in musical form; serfs, slaves and tenant farmers sang of deliverance from bondage as they worked the fields. Yet sometime in Church history, music began to drift from the center of worship to become filler material that got you from one form of spoken word to the next. The Protestant church service has been uncharitably referred to as a “hymn sandwich” by modern reformers. Now there is a new wind stirring, bringing fresh music in the breeze. And not just among Metaphysical Christians—our friends in many other Protestant traditions are rediscovering the power of music as worship, and they are being joined in this melodious awakening by Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and other communities as well. This week Rev. Dr. Thomas Shepherd and his panel of musically minded guests will discuss these new trends.
