Emo ambient? That's just one way to describe the ever-evolving work of boundary-pushing artist Mari Maurice, better known as more eaze. Her prolific output defies the norms of the music world, blending ambient, noise, autotune, and pedal steel with a deeply personal, human touch. In this episode, Mari shares her unique approach to making music that dissolves the lines between pop and what's considered, in inverted commas, „serious“ music. Her collaboration with claire rousay on Never Stop Texting Me beautifully exemplifies this artistic ethos. We talk about the challenges Mari faced in Austin's experimental scene and the creative freedom she‘s discovered since relocating to New York. Immersed in the city‘s rich musical landscape, she's embraced collaboration and opened up new dimensions in her sound, drawing from both minimalist and maximalist influences to reshape her approach to composition.Mari also reflects on the joy of making experimental music more accessible, sharing how a live performance sparked her own musical journey and shaped her ethos as an artist. Along the way, we explore the serendipitous nature of sound creation and the growing acceptance of pop elements in avant-garde music. If you're enjoying the show, please consider subscribing and leaving a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. Adam has been re-reading David Keenan's historical biography on the rise of Industrial Music, England's Hidden Riverse, after it was re-published with extended material over the summer. That book primarily looks at the rise and legacies of Coil, Nurse with Wound, and Current 93 (and suspiciously, only passingly mentions Douglas Pearce and Death in June.) There is also, however, a plethora of material dedicated to William Bennett and what led the British artist to create the pioneering power electronics project Whitehouse. Formed by Bennett in 1980 and joined by Philip Best in the '80s and Peter Sotos in the '90s, Whitehouse developed both the sound (throbbing bass, ear searing and abused synths, washed out white noise, brutal and screamed vocals) and content (power, abuse, serial murder, war crimes) of the style that we now call power electronics. Though PE has since given us several iconic artists and acts — Con-Dom, Grey Wolves, Genocide Organ, and Ramleh among them — there is still something about the conceptual rigor, thematic depth, and historical mythos of Whitehouse that makes the group an enduringly fascinating area of study. To discuss the legacy of Whitehouse as well as the philosophy and history of industrial music, Adam and Will converse with friend and noise musician Xylon Genesis Otterburn, back for the second time on the show. Max Julian Eastman is a noise musician known for recording music under his own name and with projects like Greathumour and Tantric Death as well as the proprietor of what we consider to be one of the best American noise labels currently in existence. In contra to countless other labels that endlessly put out everything that comes out of "the scene", Max approaches Tribe Tapes with an aesthetic and conceptual theory. There is a general sense of discovery here, with reissues of artists that you certainly have never heard of, and a strong, unmistakable visual aesthetic. A welcome addition to the Counter-Agency of the Avant-Garde, indeed. Max discusses the label, his label's reissuing of classics from the late Marco Corbelli's Slaughter Productions label, the avant-garde and post-punk beginning of industrial and noise music, Smell and Quim, Atrax Morgue, the Haters, and much much more. Episode 93 Playlist for Part 2 Noise and Improvisations I found a mother lode of noise and experimental music hiding in the crates of my local New York record store. Corum, “Effigy Mounds: Ceremonial Music For Spore Alter” side a from Effigy Mounds: Ceremonial Music For Spore Alter” (2014 Psychic Sounds). Effigy Mounds is the second album of the Beguiling Isles Trilogy (Born of Earth's Torments / Effigy Mounds / Magic Mirror). This LP is about spore modification, the rise of the puffs, and juice modification. All with tabletop electronics and found sounds. Played and recorded 2012/2013. 20:07 Crumer-Franco, “Agony In The Zodiac” from Agony In The Zodiac (2008 Ahaziah). Vinyl, 12", Single Sided, Limited Edition. More Drums, Paal Nilssen-Love; Drums, Pika; Guitar, Jojo Hiroshige; Noises, Lasse Marhaug. Recorded at Osaka Chika-Ikkai, February 10th 2011. This noise romp is side two of this record. It begins with a supplementary drum track that sounds like mono to which Pika adds her own crashing, continual rhythms in stereo. 14:58 Pod Blotz, The Swamp Command (2006 Fish Pies). Vinyl, LP, Limited Edition. Pod Blotz is the electronic, experimental noise project of Suzy Poling, started in 2002. Limited to 320 numbered copies. 7:00 Rodger Stella, Kites, “Untitled” (side 1). from Interior Moon (2011 Mutter Wild). Both sides of the LP end in a locked groove. Vinyl, LP, Limited Edition Recorded in 2003 on a broken, dust-filled concrete basement floor in Bushwick, NY. Die-cut record sleeve with letter-pressed inner tip-on. Copy 118 of edition of 333. Called by Record Collector “the most accomplished critical overview yet” of progressive rock and one of their 2011 books of the year, “Beyond and Before” moves away from the limited consensus that prog rock is exclusively English in origin and that it was destroyed by the advent of punk in 1976. Instead, by tracing its multiple origins and complex transitions, it argues for the integration of jazz and folk into progressive rock and the extension of prog in Kate Bush, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree and many more.In 2021, an updated and expanded edition of “Beyond and Before” was released. The 10-year anniversary revised edition continues to further unpack definitions of progressive rock and includes a brand-new chapter focusing on post-conceptual trends in the 2010s through to the contemporary moment. The new edition discusses the complex creativity of progressive metal and folk in greater depth, as well as new fusions of genre that move across global cultures and that rework the extended form and mission of progressive rock, including in recent pop concept albums. Every chapter is revised to keep the process of rethinking progressive rock alive and vibrant as a hybrid, open form.Paul Hegarty is Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Nottingham, UK. He's the author and editor of 11 books that span critical and cultural theory, rock, experimental and noise music, as well as audiovisual art including 2007's “Noise/Music”, 2014's “Rumour and Radiation” and 2020's “Annihilating Noise” all published by Bloomsbury Academic.
