In September 2015, leaders from around the world gathered in New York at the United Nations General Assembly and committed to an ambitious global agenda, setting forth seventeen “Sustainable Development Goals”, or SDGs, to be achieved by 2030. These goals, if accomplished, would mark incredible feats of human history. Unfortunately, the most recent report from the UN Economic and Social Council shows that the world is not on track to meet these targets by the 2030 deadline. This episode of the Oxford Policy Pod will dive into the progress and delays on the SDGs, and understand what it will take to reach these goals. We also explore how policymakers are using these voluntary international commitments to guide and prioritize work in practice, specifically in the context of developing urban areas.  https://www.sdglab.ch/en-team/edward-mishaud (Edward Mishaud), is a Senior Advisor and current acting Director with the https://www.sdglab.ch/ (SDG Lab) at UN Geneva. Protoculture on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 4/20/22   About Protoculture -    'Everything he touches turns to musical gold' - Armin van Buuren, A State of Trance Only a few South African producers enjoy the success that DJ and Producer Nate Raubenheimer, better known to most as Protoculture, has had over the last 12 years of his career. Hailed by many of his piers as South Africa's biggest dance music export, he has also left his mark on the international dance scene with his trademark blend of melodic and emotionally charged compositions and DJ sets. Sucked into the art of music production at a young age, Nate made the leap to pursue a music career professionally after completing his studies in Audio Engineering at age 20, immediately taking the international psy-trance scene by storm. His international debut came at the United Kingdom's famed Glastonbury Festival. With the release of his first artist album, “Refractions”, and the follow up “Circadians”, a slew of international performances ensued worldwide, seeing Nate travel to all four corners of the globe. From London to Tokyo, Sao Paulo to Moscow, Protoculture was a staple at psy-trance festivals around the globe, most notably at Glade in the UK, Universo Parallello in Bahia, Brazil, Earthcore Global Carnival in Melbourne, Australia and Ozora Festival near Budapest. Protoculture's 2010 album, “Love Technology” ushered in a great deal of changes for the South African producer, bridging the gap between his previous exclusively underground sound with influences from other genres. The album garnered attention from industry heavyweights Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Max Graham and Paul Oakenfold with the single, ‘Naked' receiving support on all the aforementioned artists radio shows as well as being named ‘Track of the week' on Global DJ Broadcast. This heralded the beginning of a new era for Nate, quickly being snapped by Max Graham's Rebrand Records and Dutch powerhouse label, Armada Music which became the home for hit singles such as “Sun Gone Down”, “Cobalt”, “Topaz”, “Laguna” and many others, all smashing the Beatport Top 10 Trance charts. Nate has also built impressive remix credentials over the years at Armada, being credited with remixes for Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Paul Oakenfold, Bryan Adams, Dash Berlin, Robert Miles, Jeanne Michelle Jarre and Nadia Ali. The Protoculture and Max Graham remix of Paul Oakenfold's ‘Grace – Not Over Yet' landed a number one on the Beatport Trance charts and the held the position for over a month, as well as scoring a number one position on the UK Buzz Charts and DMC UK Club Charts. He also received a SAMA nomination (South African Music Award) for his remix work on Goldfish's smash hit, ‘Cruising through' on Pacha Recordings. Protoculture, as a DJ and live performer, ranked South Africa's number one DJ according to the DJ Mag Top 100 polls from 2011 to present, has also played alongside a diverse range of international heavyweights such as Paul van Dyk, Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, Armin van Buuren, Orbital, Future Sound of London, Gareth Emery, Sander van Doorn to name but a few. A staple at Armin van Buuren's legendary A State of Trance World Tours, Nate performed alongside the 5 times world number one DJ in Mexico, South Africa and The Netherlands to sell out crowds with live performances being broadcast around the world live to over 20 million people. For anyone entering a yoga studio today, the world of Islam might feel a million miles away. Yet for more than a thousand years, practitioners of Yoga have lived side by side with the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent. The history of Islam and Yoga, of Muslims and Hindus, is more than a tale of simple coexistence, though. It's also a story of close interactions and careful comparisons, of Persian translations of Sanskrit texts, and Arabic investigations of Yogi doctrines, along with a shared concern with the spiritual value of breath-control. In this episode of Akbar's Chamber, we'll be looking at some of the most influential Muslim authors on such topics, including al-Biruni (d.1048) and Muhammad Ghaws (d.1562). But far from burying our heads in recondite manuscripts, we'll be placing these figures in their living environments, where Sufis regularly encountered ‘Jogis,' and wondered what they had in common. We'll also be asking how these medieval encounters can inform our understanding of religious pluralism in Asia today. Nile Green talks to Carl W. Ernst, the author of Refractions of Islam in India: Situating Sufism and Yoga (Sage, 2016).

Kathryn Rodrigues talked about being a 3rd culture kid, growing up in many countries and returning to the U.S. as a teenager, but not feeling at home. I loved how she talked about the space of transition, that time in motion and trying to capture that feeling in her work. She also shone a light on the world of freelance teaching artists, balancing teaching with art-making and parenting. Kathryn talked about the structure of her teaching time before the pandemic and how she brought the city of Chicago into the classroom through field trips to art venues as well as sharing local artists, working to create equity and improve access to cultural resources. She shared the idea of curriculum development centered around local BIPOC artists, rather than including them as an exception to the white-centered curriculum. That brought up a great question we can all ask ourselves - what is at the center of your teaching? Kathryn Rodrigues is a Chicago based artist and educator. She was born in Georgia and within weeks was on the move to her family's next destination. Her family moved to 10 different locations within the next 13 years, including Brazil, Mozambique, Portugal and Germany, before finally settling in Illinois. Being raised as a “third-culture kid” left her with a deep interest in cultural identity, notions of belonging and longing, domestic life, and the natural world. She often uses both visual and symbolic systems of mapping in her work as a way to express her interior life and navigate the world around her. Her work represents an investigation of and a reflection on the collection of experiences and memories that shape her identity. Kathryn received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Illinois and a Master of Science in Art Education from the Massachusetts College of Art. She has taught courses for children and adults at the Massachusetts College of Art, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and Marwen. Exhibition highlights include the Chicago Cultural Center, Copley Society of Art, Woman Made Gallery, Midwest Center for Photography, Spilt Milk Gallery, Open House Contemporary and ARC Gallery. This week, I had the opportunity to interview the great guitarist Dave Frackenpohl. For more than twenty years, Dave has been a first call guitarist here in Atlanta and a sought-after jazz educator. He teaches at Georgia State University, plays throughout the city and country, and has published a number of jazz guitar method books. His 2012 album, Refractions, highlights Dave's mastery of guitar and his diverse abilities as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. In this interview, we discuss Dave's upbringing in upstate New York, guitar techniques, the Atlanta jazz scene, advice for young musicians, jam sessions, practice techniques, and much more. A quick note: We conducted this interview over zoom and our connection drops out a few times. About the showIf you love deep, honest, authentic conversations get ready to love Grief is a Sneaky Bitch. Lisa Keefauver, founder of Reimagining Grief, holds an extensive grief resume herself, as a social worker, narrative therapist, grief guide, and widow. She brings her deep curiosity, love of conversation, and knowledge of how language and culture shapes our experiences of ourselves and our world, including our grief, to each unscripted conversation. From CEO’s and social workers to authors, educators, filmmakers and stay-at-home moms, her guests open up about the complexity, confusion, and even confidence they have gained by navigating a grief journey of their own.About the episode In this episode, Lisa talks to British-Iranian poet Fad Jamal (Khorsandjamal) about the power of artistic expression in the process of grieving. Fad intertwines her love of nature, the losses she’s faced, both death and non-death, and the poetic notions and sensibilities of her Persian heritage and the Farsi language to explore love and loss in two volumes of poetry - Quixotic Nature and most recently, Reflections and Refractions. Our conversation was so rich and expansive as we explored what nature has taught her about loss in its various forms and the ways in which metaphor and poetry has allowed her to explore the dark shadows of pain and grief. Fad brings forth such light, wisdom and hope, and even shares a few of her poems with us. The texts that are examined in this study move in and out of different languages or are multilingual in their origins. Texts and authors do not move randomly; rather, they follow routes shaped by the history of contact between different nations of the transpacific. As these texts move into and out of the Chinese language or become multilingual, they necessarily do not always remain Sinophone. The works of the authors discussed are refracted out of Chinese literature into American, Malaysian, and Japanese literatures and, in some cases, back into Chinese again. Following their paths through multiple languages makes visible the ways that these trajectories are informed by, are arrested by, and bend around historical and geopolitical barriers across the Pacific. To this end, examining the path that these texts from a transpacific perspective allows for the possibility of not only multilingual but multidirectional movement. The transpacific trajectories discussed in this book give rise to a number of different versions or interpretations of several texts. When put into conversation with one another, these texts often acquire new meaning as they move between different languages, countries, or time periods. In Rethinking the Modern Chinese Canon: Refractions Across the Transpacific (Cambria Press, 2020) author Clara Iwasaki reads four canonical Chinese writers in relation to their translations, interpellations, and interpretations in different languages, revealing them to be more worldly than previously supposed. Texts, writers, and characters appear in different languages, sometimes taking markedly different forms. Authors translate and translators become authors. When individual texts are read in the context of their language or country of origin, these valences of meaning become lost. It is in reading clusters of texts together that these hidden relationship to other writers, other languages, and other texts become visible. To this end, Iwasaki looks at four writers, Xiao Hong, Yu Dafu, Lao She, and Zhang Ailing, through what she calls refractive relations. Following transpacific circuits, these writers and texts move not simply from periphery to center, or from obscurity to canon, but back and forth between literary, linguistic, and national communities. Many literary encounters today have their origin in meetings of authors and texts decades earlier. Rather than focusing on a single text, this book focuses on the relationship between the different works and how these texts acquire meaning when read in relation to each other.  This book is in the Cambria Sinophone World Series headed by Victor H. Mair (University of Pennsylvania).  Clara Iwasaki is an assistant professor in the East Asian Studies Department at University of Alberta. Lydia has also worked alongside a nonprofit group called Telos, which is dedicated to peacemaking efforts among polarized people groups. As you can imagine, this conversation is fascinating. Together, Mako and Lydia invited me to see how brokenness can in fact be the starting point for beauty and how eternal truths about true beauty can be passed down from generation to generation.

Mako Fujimura is an artist and a philosopher. He’s been blowing my mind for 15 years, first with his painting and then with his writing. "Culture is not a territory to be won; it is instead a resource we are called to steward,” he has said. That statement is a rebuke to the last forty years of American life. Mako is a Christian, and so he is in particular rebuking American Christianity. He gives us a radically different paradigm through which to view the world. He is a renowned painter. His works have been shown all over the world, at "the Dillon Gallery in New York, Sato Museum in Tokyo, The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts Museum, Bentley Gallery in Arizona, Gallery Exit and Oxford House at Taikoo Place in Hong Kong, Vienna’s Belvedere Museum, Shusaku Endo Museum in Nagasaki.”"He is one of the first artists to paint live on stage at New York City’s legendary Carnegie Hall as part of an ongoing collaboration with composer and percussionist, Susie Ibarra.”Mako paints using an ancient Japanese technique called Nihonga, which relies on the use of pulverized minerals and is makes use of papers made from Japanese mulberry and hemp fibers. He has likened his use of these pulverized minerals to the way that suffering can be redeemed in our own lives. "These materials themselves have to be pulverized and pounded to become beautiful,” he said.We talk about his experience on 9/11/01, when he lived three blocks from the World Trade Center and didn’t know for some time that morning whether his children, who were in school two blocks from the towers, had survived. This is from an August 2019 commencement address: "After 9/11, I had to train my imagination by painting over and over images of fire. I needed to transform haunting memories and images of destructive fire into the fire of sanctification. When I saw the spire fall at Notre Dame last month, yes, I was right back where I started — but I was able, also, to turn my mind and my heart back to my studio near Ground Zero, and again go into my daily practice toward sanctification. These fires do not have to end in destruction. Fire can purify our memory and desire. (“Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain.” T.S Eliot, The Wasteland) A renewed neuron network can form, if we imagine through the darkness." Mako has written three books: “Culture Care,” “Silence and Beauty,” and “Refractions.” His work on “Silence and Beauty” brought him into collaboration with renowned director Martin Scorsese, who directed the film “Silence,” a story based on the Japanese novel by the same name written by Shusaki Endo, which plays a big part in Mako’s book. Here are links to a few other writings & speeches.“The Aroma of the New” - Makoto Fujimura commencement address at Belhaven University, 2011“Would You Give Your Life for Beauty?” - Makoto Fujimura commencement address at Messiah College, 2013“

“Everything he [Protoculture] touches turns to musical gold” - Armin van Buuren, A State of Trance Only a few South African producers enjoy the success that DJ and producer Nate Raubenheimer, better known to most as Protoculture, has had over the last 12 years. Hailed by many distinguished peers as his home country's largest dance music export, he has left his mark on the international dance scene with his trademark blend of melodic and emotionally charged compositions and sets. Sucked into the art of music production at a young age, Nate made the leap to pursue a music career professionally after completing his studies in audio engineering at age 20. Immediately taking the international psy-trance scene by storm, his international debut performance came at the United Kingdom's famed Glastonbury Festival. With the release of his first album “Refractions” and follow up “Circadians”, a slew of international performances ensued, seeing Nate travel to all corners of the globe. From London to Tokyo, Sao Paulo to Moscow, Protoculture is a staple at psy-trance festivals around the globe, most notably at Glade, Universo Parallello, Earthcore Global Carnival, and Ozora. ------------------ 1. Makoto Fujimura, world renown artist, talks in depth about his book, Culture Care.  He shares his profound ideas about culture being a resource we are called to steward rather than a territory to be won or lost.  We talk about the vital importance of beauty to the sustainablity of a thriving culture for generations to come. He describes artists as being "border-stalkers", people who don't quite fit in to one group but those who walk the margins and are able to move from different cultures and people groups.  Border-stalkers can become cultural leaders by using beauty and creativity to ultimately connect us to each other.    Makoto is director of Fuller Theological Seminary's Brehm Center of Worship Theology and the Arts.  He has received four honorary doctorate degrees and is an alumni of Bucknell University.  He has work displayed across the globe and has served as a presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003-2009.  He has also written a book of essays called Refractions and the award winning book, Silence and Beauty: Hidden Faith Born of Suffering.  Find out more by visiting his websites: https://www.makotofujimura.com http://iamculturecare.com
