We make a case for Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2 (1990) as the platonic ideal of a blockbuster sequel - a bigger, dumber version of the original with a great supporting cast which delivers on the formula and also serves as a better “Christmas movie” than the first one to boot. We itemize our issues with McTiernan's return to the franchise with Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), and trash the final two films in the series, Len Wiseman's Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and John Moore's rock-bottom final entry, 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard, inexplicably set in Russia. How do we become the change we need to see in the world?  What are the actual, practical steps to grounding, connecting and resonating with the world? We're on the brink of cataclysmic change.  Knowing this, we have choices: we can either fold into despair, terror, rage…whatever rises up in us as we watch the whole biosphere hurtle towards irrevocable tipping points. Or we can become the change we need to see in the world: each of us.  This is a cliché by now, but that doesn't stop it being true.  Here are others: we are the people we have been waiting for and if not us, now then who and when?  We've been saying these for a long time and if you're listening to this podcast, then you're already on board, at least intellectually.   You know there is no going back, that ideology cannot win out over biophysical reality and avoiding ecosystem collapse doesn't just mean moving to regenerative farming or buying second hand clothes or even changing all the narratives of all the world's media systems - good though each of these things would be. But there's been a gap between what we know and how we behave, between where our better selves might push us and the behaviours that are locked into the core of our being, our firmware, if you like. But now - this minute now - we're hitting the buffers where the old paradigm is so obviously not fit for purpose that we need something new. The core questions are what? And how? And this is where we're going with the podcast just now - After Dr John Izzo of the Elders Action Network reminded us of our purpose on the earth, and Andrea Hiott of Waymaking helped us embrace paradox - now we're talking to someone who can help guide us into the embodied reality of a different way of being.  Dan McTiernan is a certified Transpersonal Psychology Coach, embodied meditation teacher and breathwork instructor. With is wife Johanna, he's the co-founder of embodied coaching organisation, Earthbound. He hosts the Being Earthbound podcast which is absolutely on my must-listen list, as is the Substack blog from which it arises. He's a facilitator on Alef Trust's Nurturing the Fields of Change programme and is the project leader for the Embodied Permaculture Project - an international 2-year action research project exploring the impacts of holistic wellbeing on outer ecological change work. The first 9 weeks of this programme are about to be released as a self-study course - and by the time this podcast ends, you will want to join up with that - I'll put a link in the show notes as soon as I have one - hopefully before this goes live.  He is currently working with Alef Trust and the A Team Foundation to deliver an innovative project supporting farmers and growers in the UK with a programme of embodied wellbeing known as Calmer Farmer which will be launched in January 2025.As you'll hear, Dan is working at the leading edge of the change we need to embody. He has straightforward practices that any of us can do to help us with grounding, attunement, opening and integration so that we can be the nodes in the web of life.  This is key people: we need to stop trying to think our way out of this with our head minds. It doesn't work. It's not going to work.  We need to come into our physical bodies, find that truly calming place of peace - and then find connections we can trust with the wider web.  This is what we're here for.  And Dan has routes to get there.  For more information about this coaching approach, to book a 1-1 appointment or to find out more about Earthbound's courses and practice group: www.earthbound.fiFor more information about Calmer Farmer: www.calmerfarmer.orgTo read more about Dan's work and to listen to the Being Earthbound podcast: www.beingearthbound.substack.comThe Embodied Permaculture Course is here https://earthbound.fi/embodied-permaculture-course

Yippee-Ki-Yay, M*#^%$F@!^!#: John McTiernan's Die Hard  This week a 1980s Action Classic . . . John McTiernan's Die Hard (1988). A huge gamble for 20th Century Fox in the late 1980s, Die Hard remains the standard for "everyman" action films. Before the character would become a superhero, impervious to any and all pain, John McClane was a New York cop, visiting Los Angeles, and struggling to keep his ego, anger, and jealousy in check in a Christmas Eve attempt to win back his estranged wife. We all know the story . . . Terrorists (?) take over Nakatomi Plaza and all that stands between their nefarious plans, freedom and (spoiler alert) $650 million is John McClane. What could have been an obvious and forgettable action film chooses to go against the grain and - thus - creates the archetype for the "everyman" hero. There are moments throughout McTiernan's film that would set the template and move away from the indestructible and introduce a relatable and vulnerable hero.  With a great supporting cast including: Bonnie Bedelia (Holly Gennaro McClane), Reginald VelJohnson (Sgt. Al Powell), Alexander Godunov (Karl), William Atherton (Thornburg), and in a star-making turn, Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber. This is a great action relic and one that we were thrilled to re-visit. Take a listen and remember a great time. Thanks for the continued love and support. "Die Hard with a Vengeance" (1995), directed by John McTiernan, was the third installment in the iconic "Die Hard" franchise. The film marked Bruce Willis's return as NYPD detective John McClane, and this time he's teamed up with Samuel L. Jackson's character, Zeus Carver, to thwart a series of terrorist attacks in New York City. The production faced various challenges, including living up to the high expectations set by the successful first two films. McTiernan and the creative team had to deliver a fresh and compelling story while maintaining the trademark intensity and wit that defined the franchise. The film's production involved extensive location shooting in New York City, showcasing iconic landmarks and adding an authentic urban backdrop to the action sequences. The chemistry between Willis and Jackson, the dynamic direction by McTiernan, and the screenplay's clever blend of suspense and humor contributed to the film's success. "Die Hard with a Vengeance" not only continued the franchise's tradition of delivering thrilling action but also expanded the scope and stakes of the series, solidifying its status as a standout entry in the action genre. Character dynamics are touched on, along with some problematic elements. Here are a few other points in our discussion:Memorable one-liners and quips from SchwarzeneggerContrast of the special forces team against the advanced alienDiscussion of problematic Indigenous American and female character tropesAlways hoping for more from Jesse “The Body” Ventura's characterPredator succeeds at being an enthralling, action-packed cinema ride. Rollerball (2002) is one of the worst movies any of us have ever seen; and that is saying something. Directed by John McTiernan—who always seems to appear on our pod, despite directing some of our favorite films—Rollerball was a remake of a 1975 film starring James Caan. The 2002 version retains none of what made that movie work. It's social criticisms are half-baked, the actual Rollerball scenes are nauseating, and its lead, Chris Klein, makes wood appear emotive by comparison. Shot, reshot, and shot again, Rollerball is an absolute mess onscreen. Off-screen, the situation was even worse. McTiernan, who was in a bitter battle over the course of the film, illegally wiretapped the movie's producer—an action that would land him in prison years later. Thus, Rollerball's 3% on Rotten Tomatoes should not come as a shock, nor should its meager box office gross of $25.9 million (its budget was $70 million). One didn't require night vision to see that this project was set to crash and burn. Now, sit back, pound as many Voodoo Ranger Fruit Force IPAs from New Belgium as your stomach will allow, and watch out for the motorcycles! It is a podcast about the political thrillers of that decade, and what they said — or did not say — about the United States in the last years and immediate aftermath of the Cold War. We're going to cover a wide range of movies, but we thought we would begin with a paradigmatic example of the genre, John McTiernan's The Hunt for Red October, based on the best-selling Tom Clancy novel.A quick correction: In the episode, Jamelle said that McTiernan went to jail for tax evasion. This was incorrect. He actually went to prison for lying to the FBI.
