A single smile can explain web accessibility better than a thousand audits. Makoto Ueki joins us from Japan to share the moment that changed his career: watching an 80+ year old woman, newly blind, learn to search Google with a screen reader and light up when the results finally appeared. That story sets the tone for a practical, human conversation about why accessible technology matters and how inclusive design turns the web into independence. We also get specific about the reality of web accessibility in Japan and why it differs from the US and Europe. Japan has no laws mandating web accessibility and far fewer lawsuits, which means many teams still fight for basic understanding and stakeholder support before they can even talk about implementing WCAG 2.2. Makoto breaks down how that “why” phase can trap organisations in a checklist mentality and a shift-right process where accessibility gets bolted on late. Then we connect the dots to a global trend: accessibility burnout, driven by isolation, competing priorities, and the struggle to make change inside organisations. One of the most valuable takeaways is Japan's perspective on the world's fastest-aging population. Accessibility isn't “special work for someone else” it's better user experience for humans across a whole lifespan. We wrap with Makoto's most actionable advice: most accessibility issues come down to a short list of web fundamentals like alt text, colour contrast, keyboard navigation, headings, forms, captions, and resizable content, plus usability testing with real users and assistive technology to catch what guidelines miss. If you found this helpful, subscribe, share it with a teammate, and leave a review with the one accessibility fundamental you plan to improve first.Send us Fan MailSupport the showFollow axschat on social media.Bluesky:Antonio https://bsky.app/profile/akwyz.comDebra https://bsky.app/profile/debraruh.bsky.socialNeil https://bsky.app/profile/neilmilliken.bsky.socialaxschat https://bsky.app/profile/axschat.bsky.socialLinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/antoniovieirasantos/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/axschat/https://www.linkedin.com/in/neilmilliken/Vimeohttps://vimeo.com/akwyzhttps://twitter.com/axschathttps://twitter.com/AkwyZhttps://twitter.com/neilmillikenhttps://twitter.com/debraruh

Each verb takes its past-tense form followed by ri, and the whole phrase is typically closed with the verb suru. Example: 週末は本を読んだり映画を見たりします。 On weekends I do things like read books and watch movies. Vocabulary: 週末は — on weekends 本を — books 読んだり — do things like read 映画を — movies 見たりします — and watch, among other things Become a Makoto+ member for bonus content: www.MakotoPlus.com

But what if beauty is not peripheral, but essential to healing what is broken?Trinity Forum Senior Fellow Makoto Fujimura and Haejin Shim Fujimura will be our guides on this question, discussing their new book, Beauty and Justice: Creating a Life of Abundance and Courage. Drawing on their work in the arts and global advocacy, they will consider how cultivating beauty can help us to sustain courage, foster resilience, and contribute to the pursuit of justice. This episode is drawn from an Online Conversation in 2026. Stephen Starr didn't plan to get into the restaurant business. He set out to be a radio DJ. Then a nightclub owner. Then a music promoter.Along the way, he booked a young Jerry Seinfeld for $75, promoted shows for U2 and Madonna, and spent years pretending to be more successful than he really was. Then, in his late 30s, Stephen walked into a glitzy martini bar in New York.He was so taken with it, he decided to start his own version in Philadelphia.Today, Starr Restaurant Group generates nearly half a billion dollars in annual revenue and includes some of the most successful independent restaurants in America: Pastis, Buddakan, Le Diplomate, Parc, Makoto, and dozens more. The surprising part?Stephen did not start out as a foodie.Instead, he became obsessed with the theatre of dining: design, upholstery, lighting, music. A “wow!” feeling when you walk in the door.In this conversation with Guy, Stephen talks about the hard lessons he learned in the comedy and music business, and the unexpected path he took to redefining dining. What You'll Learn:The unglamorous economics of rock concerts and restaurantsHow rejection, romantic heartbreak, and failure can become powerful motivatorsWhy he believes he's spent his career "throwing the party" without attending itHow building the right team of designers can make a restaurant feel magicalWhy Stephen says today's entrepreneurs have a much harder path than his generation didThe model Stephen says new restaurateurs should follow todayTimestamps:00:06:03 — A lonely childhood: Making up skits in his room00:09:49 — Losing his mother at age 1900:11:17 — Starting a comedy club: Deli by day. Stand up at night00:20:49 — Going broke and reneging on a bank loan00:28:26 — Music promotion: Feeling like a fraud while promoting U2, Madonna00:36:52 — A New York martini bar inspires Stephen to start his own00:42:20 — The bold design behind a line-out-the-door restaurant01:03:31 — Opening Buddakan in New York: “I can't do anything better. This is Sgt. Pepper”01:09:08 — Starting a restaurant today: “I would say don't do it … but if you do, keep it smaller”This episode was produced by Alex Cheng with music composed by Ramtin Arablouei. Makoto Chi is a visual artist, born and raised in Canada, and currently living in Western Massachusetts. His artistic backgrounds are in tattooing, drawing and painting, occasionally eddying into sculpture and installation. These practices cross-pollinate and share thematic through lines: Queer eros, ritual, diasporic desire for belonging, dualisms, and revisiting and refracting personal memories. Research into the visual cultures, mythologies and spiritualities of his Japanese and Ashkenazi Jewish heritages are important touchstones, where the fractured narratives of fleeing homelands, internments, of receiving and enacting grave violence are given space to speak and merge together. For Makoto, Chi, eroticism within anthropomorphic bodies is a means of queer refraction and reimagining of these histories and myths; they re-knit severed relationships to his heritages while opening space for new meaning and surprises. Makoto Chi Graduated from Emily Carr University in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in illustration. He currently lives in Western Massachusetts at Lupinewood Collective, an intentional living space and community project.
