Show #444 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 15th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to new Patreon PRODUCER MARTIN HORNER VOLKSWAGEN PUSHES BATTERY PARTNERS TO BUILD GIGAFACTORIES "Volkswagen is pushing its joint venture partners including SK Innovation (SKI) to build electric car battery plants which have at least one Gigawatt manufacturing capacity, Chief Executive Herbert Diess told Reuters." in a report today: "Volkswagen will buy 50 billion euros ($56.57 billion) worth of battery cells for electric cars and has identified South Korea’s SKI, LG Chem and Samsung SDI as strategic battery cell suppliers as well as China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL)." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-autoshow-shanghai-vw/volkswagen-pushes-battery-partners-to-build-gigafactories-idUKKCN1RR09A?utm_source=applenews PORSCHE JAPAN SELECTS ABB TO BUILD CHADEMO INFRASTRUCTURE FOR TAYCAN "ABB announced that it was selected by Porsche Japan for a joint development project of next-generation EV chargers for the Japanese market" says InsideEVs today: "According to the press release, the two will develop a “dedicated high-power charger” with power output exceeding 150 kW." From the press release: "“ABB has entered into an agreement to deliver its market-leading electric vehicle infrastructure for Porsche Japan’s EVs, including Taycan, the automaker’s first fully electric car, set to enter the Japanese market in 2020. Under the terms, Porsche Japan will install ABB’s high-power chargers at Porsche Centers and public facilities across the country, creating a network of fast chargers for its electric vehicles. The first installation is set to go live in mid-2020." https://insideevs.com/porsche-japan-chademo-charging-infrastructure/ AUDI AI:ME UNVEILED AS REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE EV FOR THE CITY" "The Volkswagen I.D. Roomzz isn’t the only new fully electric concept VAG is introducing at the Auto Shanghai 2019 in China as Audi is also attending the event to showcase the new AI:ME. Sending out a futuristic A2 vibe, the new showcar carrying the Four Rings takes the shape of a compact zero-emissions hatchback developed primarily for city use." reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "Audi believes an equivalent production version would mostly travel at speeds between 20 and 70 kph (12 to 43 mph) over short distances. With that in mind, the AI:ME was conceived with a simple hardware configuration encompassing a 65-kWh battery pack ideal for city use, although the actual range isn’t specified. The design is as futuristic as you’d expect from a concept, complete with rear suicide doors and the absence of conventional B-pillars. Intricate LED headlights and taillights lend the electric hatch a high-tech look, while the use of real plants inside the minimalistic cabin is a first in an automobile, according to Audi. Not that it comes as a big surprise, but the AI:ME has been envisioned with a highly advanced autonomous driving system with level 4 capabilities." https://www.motor1.com/news/344623/audi-ai-me-concept-revealed/ DUBAI POLICE UNVEIL NEW FLEET OF ELECTRIC CARS "Police in Dubai are going green with their new eco-friendly fleet of electric patrol cars to support the emirate's sustainability drive. Dubai Police officers will be getting behind the wheel of 13 Renault Zoe electric cars, secured from Arabian Automobiles." according to TheNational.ae: "Dubai Police is not the only state service helping to protect the planet. In February, Dubai Corporation of Ambulance Services unveiled the Zero DS, which produces no heat, vibration or fumes. The ambulance service said the emergency vehicle would be used for rapid intervention and immediate response situations." https://www.thenational.ae/uae/environment/dubai-police-unveil-new-fleet-of-electric-cars-1.849076 TESLA DELIVERS FIRST $35,000 MODEL 3S TO A HAPPY FEW CUSTOMERS "Tesla has started deliveries of the long-promised Model 3 for $35,000 to a happy few customers, but the delivery of the promised vehicle is expected to be short lived." says Fred at Electrek today: "After Tesla announced that it is moving away from the promised base version of Model 3 at $35,000 last week, the automaker confirmed that it would start deliveries this weekend with a software-locked version of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus. Now several buyers have reached out to Electrek to confirm that they have taken delivery of the ‘Model 3 Standard Range’. The vehicle is virtually identical to the more expensive Standard Range Plus version of the Model 3 except that Tesla has software-locked the battery pack at 90% of its capacity and disabled some features like “onboard music streaming service, navigation with live traffic visualization, and heated seats.” https://electrek.co/2019/04/15/tesla-delivers-35000-model-3/ PURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES ENTER PHASE OF FASTEST GROWTH REPORT CLAIMS A series of new reports from IDTechEx Research says the electric vehicles have officially entered their fastest phase of growth. While good news, it isn't too unexpected. Rapid improvements in technology have expanded the electric vehicle market in so many ways." Battery costs have dropped whilst their range and efficiency have increased. At the same time, governments across the world are embracing policies that emphasis no carbon emission transport. One of the studies by the independent market research company examines the rise of electric buses across the globe." https://interestingengineering.com/pure-electric-vehicles-enter-phase-of-fastest-growth-report-claims ELON MUSK SAYS TESLA IS “VASTLY AHEAD” ON SELF-DRIVING "Tesla is less than two years away from full self-driving, CEO Elon Musk said in an interview with MIT researcher Lex Fridman published on Friday. And he said Tesla was far ahead of other companies working on self-driving technology." according to Ars Technica article today: "Musk told Fridman that Tesla customers would need to keep their hands on the wheel "for at least six months or something like that." But he predicted that soon—"maybe even toward the end of this year, I'd be shocked if it's not next year at the latest"—Tesla's self-driving technology will become so good that "having a human intervene will decrease safety." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2019/04/elon-musk-says-tesla-is-vastly-ahead-on-self-driving/ LOTUS TO UNVEIL £1M+ ELECTRIC HYPERCAR AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW "BRITISH car maker Lotus is set to pull the wraps off a £1m+ pure-electric hypercar at the Shanghai Motor Show later today." says the Sunday Times Driving: "The low-volume sports car’s £1m+ pure-electric performance model would sit at the top of the Lotus family tree, and go up against extreme supercars from Aston Martin and McLaren. The car would be fitted with electric motor and battery tech developed in partnership with the Williams F1 team’s Advanced Engineering division." https://www.driving.co.uk/news/lotus-unveil-1m-electric-hypercar-shanghai-motor-show/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Welcome to our newest member of the Patreon gang it’s a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER MICHAEL PASTRONE. FOLLOW UP WITH HUBJECT ON PLUG & CHARGE Plug and Charge is being rolled out on the next generation of BEVs...so that includes the EQC, e-tron, Taycan etc. CharInEV.org: "The two CharIN members Hubject and Electrify America recently announced to cooperate in the establishment of Plug & Charge in the North American market. Electrify America will implement the Plug & Charge mechanism in its charging stations. For supporting the broader market rollout, the “CharIN Implementation Guide to Plug and Charge” based on ISO 15118 will be available for all CharIN members in the first quarter of this year. The implementation of ISO 15118 is a significant step for smart charging of electric vehicles and the vehicle network communication (V2G). It allows vehicles to automatically authenticate and authorize when loading. RFID cards, credit cards or mobile apps will not be needed any more." https://www.charinev.org/news/news-detail-2018/news/plug-charge-cooperation-of-charin-members-hubject-and-electrify-america-1/ TESLA DELIVERY HANDLING IN EUROPE So who has the resources to handover so manhy ship loads? ICO - International Car Operators. And this post from Reddit: "ICO Zeebrugge, Belgium had to install 300 superchargers as part of the weekly 3000 cars Tesla contract. Charging to 80% at arrival." From a local newspaper: "ICO invested around 2.5 million euros (3 million $) at its terminal in 300 charging stations that can program eight cars in sequence. In the long term, 1,500 are planned. The cars leave 80 percent charged to the consumer"."ICO is already transferring 2,1 of the 2,8 million cars a year in Zeebrugge, “but we need expansion”, ICO boss Marc Adriansens said in May this year. “The market is still growing and Zeebrugge is very popular with all car shipping companies.” Japanese logistics specialist Nippon Yusen Kaisha announced earlier this year an investment in its ICO car terminal with 60 million euro of which one-third will be put in a wind mill park at the site. The new wind farm will have a capacity of 44 megawatt and a yearly production of 110 gigawatt hour, good enough to provide a city like Bruges with energy for one year. The wind farm should be operational by end 2019." https://newmobility.news/2018/12/12/zeebrugge-prepares-for-handing-model-3-tesla-is-hiring/ TESLA MODEL 3 COST SURPRISED PORSCHE AND AUDI AFTER REVERSE-ENGINEERING "Tesla Model 3 is now entering the European market and it is making some automakers nervous. According to a new report, Porsche and Audi reverse-engineered Tesla’s new electric car and they were quite surprised by its cost." according to Fred at Electrek: "Now a new report from Germany’s Manager Magazin (German and paywall) includes a deep dive into the state of Audi with comments from executives and insider sources. It claims that Porsche and Audi, who are working together on a next-generation electric platform, had to change their approach because the cost was too high compared to what Tesla is achieving." The report says: "The e-tron as the first electric Audi is not only late. It does not reach some target values and has become far too expensive with more than two billion euros in development costs. The approximately 600,000 cars sold for the break-even are now regarded as an illusion." In Fred's comments: "A decade from now, I think we will not only look back at Model 3 for how the vehicle program accelerated EV adoption through volume but also for the impact it had on other automakers." https://electrek.co/2019/02/09/tesla-model-3-cost-surprise-porsche-audi-reverse-engineering/ NIKOLA TO RELEASE BEV VERSION OF THEIR H² TRUCKS A new electrive report today says: "Nikola Motor announced battery electric variants for their hydrogen trucks Nikola Two and Nikola Tre, which will be offered in addition to the fuel cell versions. There will be three battery capacities to choose from: 500 kWh, 750 kWh and 1,000 kWh." says Chris Randall: "While the fuel cell versions will be designed for long-haul use, Nikola Motor will be targeting short-haul use with the BEV versions. Nikola’s plans to build over 700 hydrogen stations in the USA and Canada with partner Nel Hydrogen by 2028 remain unaffected by the news. Each station should be capable of producing 2,000 to 8,000 kilos of hydrogen per day. As Zero Motorcycles wrote in the Facebook post, “In what must have been the quietest police pursuit ever, an officer on a Zero DS police bike pulled over a Tesla. Big thanks to a Bay Area police customer for capturing a snapshot of the future. #RideElectric”. Zero Motorcycles sells police fleet editions of its Zero FX and Zero DSR motorcycles. In addition to being almost totally silent and extremely fast, Zero’s electric motorcycles require no drivetrain maintenance and fuel costs are a fraction of gas-powered motorcycles, both big pluses for police department budgets." https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/zero-electric-police-motorcycle-stops-tesla-model-3/ CHEVROLET TIPPED TO LAUNCH ALL-ELECTRIC SILVERADO "Just don't expect it to come all that soon. It's not just sedans, hatchbacks, and crossovers that are going electric. So too will pickup trucks... some day. And when that day comes, General Motors doesn't plan to watch from the sidelines." according to CarBuzz: "Automobile reports that GM plans to launch an all-electric version of the Chevrolet Silverado. The news stems from a question posed to by an analyst during GM's recent financial-earnings conference call. Asked whether the company was working on an electric Silverado, GM CEO Mary Barra answered: "We believe in an all EV future so you’ll have to stay tuned.” Just a few weeks ago, news surfaced of just such a project under way for an electric GMC Sierra – the Silverado's twin." https://carbuzz.com/news/chevrolet-tipped-to-launch-all-electric-silverado COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
