We dive into the recent price increases at Rivian Adventure Network stations across the United States. Almost every station has seen a rise in cost, with some locations experiencing increases as high as $0.29 per kWh. When comparing Rivian's new rates to Tesla's Superchargers and Electrify America, it makes Rivian's Adventure Network much less competitive. I sat down with Corbin, who just took delivery of a 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 with native NACS, to hear about his 2,000-mile road trip across the country. He tested Tesla Superchargers, Electrify America, EVGO/Pilot, Rivian Adventure Network, and even Ionna stations, facing both smooth sessions and unexpected issues along the way. With Tesla's 500V limit on V3 cabinets, using NACS on an 800V EV isn't as easy as it sounds.Thank You Corbin, check out his channel and roadtrip video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZVaVgVOvj0Ioniq 5 versus the Model 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7F0h1jXlMAShoutout to our sponsors for more information find their links below:- Fort Collins Kia: Visit focokia.com for full details. Ford Power Promise for EV Cars w/ Becca Anderson AZ TRT - S05 EP40 (256) 10-13-2024 What We Learned This Week: Ford - Classic Car Company with 100 Years + History EV Car adoption is a growing trend Battery Charging at Home + on the Road Software & Service is part of the Ford Promise on new EVs F150 & Mustang Models are available as EVs Guest: Becca Anderson Senior Director Ford e Customer Experience LKIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/becca-anderson-cxdirector/ https://www.ford.com/electric/ In the early days of the personal auto, Americans wanted and needed the convenience, peace of mind and expert service of full-service filling stations. After taking two long all-electric road trips – one through the Western U.S. and the other across Europe – I'm convinced that the new generation of electric vehicle owners and would-be owners are also looking for convenience, peace of mind and expert service. While we've been focused on making public charging easier – including giving Ford owners access to Tesla's Superchargers with an adapter as part of BlueOval Charge Network – we have learned just how important home charging is to overall electric vehicle adoption in the U.S. Nearly 90% of shoppers say they would be more likely to buy an electric vehicle if they knew they could charge at home1. Filling up at home with electricity can be a significant cost save for many owners compared to filling up with gas. Problem is nearly half of them don't know how home charging works1. Where do you buy the charger? Who installs it? What does it cost? At the same time, we know many electric vehicle customers want 24/7 support from a real person with expertise if they are going to try new technology. Others want assurance on battery life. Yet our industry seems to want to answer these questions in a time-honored way – cash on the hood. Cheap lease deals on electric vehicles are popping up everywhere. Ford believes it will take more than jumbo rebates to truly break through with the estimated 19 million people in the U.S. interested in electric vehicles. It will take – you guessed it – convenience, peace of mind, and expert service. It will take a modern-day version of the friendly filling station, only this time you “fill 'er up” at home. That's the idea behind the Ford Power Promise that we are announcing today. Here are the details: Home is Where the Charge is: It's simple. Buy or lease a retail Ford Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning or E-Transit and take a complimentary home charger with you or have it delivered, and when you're ready, an expert comes out to install it at no charge for a standard install. This takes the guesswork out of installation, including costs, to help you save time and money by filling up at home. Less stress, more convenience. If you're a Ford Pro fleet customer, we have you covered with a commercial charging cash incentive. On-the-Road Charging: Road trips don't happen every day, but when you are on the road, you need to know where to fill up. Our BlueOval Charge Network automatically searches for chargers across various networks, including Electrify America and Tesla Superchargers and adds charging stops to your route via the Connected Navigation in the vehicle. With Plug and Charge, you plug in when you get there, and the payment is automatically made via your FordPass account. It's that easy. Battery Confidence: We're confident in the quality of our batteries, and we want you to be confident, too. That's why we provide an eight-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty for every Ford electric vehicle. Ford has your battery covered. Ongoing Support and Guidance: We're dedicated to providing you with the support you need whenever you need it, including complimentary roadside assistance if your vehicle's range runs too low. We're also expanding our 24/7 Ford advisor for electric vehicle support, so you'll be talking or texting with real people. We are here when you need us. Electric vehicles are an excellent choice for many people. They are fun to drive, quiet and smooth on the road. They can help save you time and money on gas. And for the first time in a long time, filling up just got easier. Now, if I can just get one of my kids to squeegee my windshield. Thieves have increasingly targeted EV charging stations, intent on stealing the cables, which contain highly conductive copper wiring. The price of copper is nearing a record high on global markets, which means that criminals stand to reap rising amounts of cash by selling the material. The clipped cables often disable entire stations, forcing EV owners who are low on power to search nervously for a working charger. For people with no charging options at home, the predicament can be exasperating and stressful. Broken-down chargers have emerged as the latest obstacle for America's automakers in their strenuous drive to convert more Americans to EV buyers despite widespread public anxiety about a scarcity of charging stations. Two years ago, according to Electrify America, which runs the nation's second-largest network of direct-current fast chargers, it might experience a cable cut perhaps every six months at one of its 968 charging stations, with 4,400 plugs nationwide. Through May this year, the figure reached over 100—more than in all of last year. “We have folks that don't have home charging, that are relying exclusively on our network to use their EVs to take their kids to school or get to work or get to medical appointments,” said Anthony Lambkin, Electrify America's vice president of operations. “And so, it's very impactful when a whole station is down due to vandalism.” Stations run by Tesla, which operates the nation's largest fast-charging network, have been hit by thieves in Seattle, Oakland, and Houston. Until more than a month ago, police in Houston hadn't seen any cable thefts. Then one cable was stolen from a charger at a gas station. The city has now recorded eight or nine such thefts. That's according to Sgt. Robert Carson, who leads a police metal theft unit. In one case, thieves swiped 18 of 19 cords at a Tesla station. “This is a new trend for us down here,” Carson said. Roy Manuel, an Uber driver who normally recharges his Tesla at the Houston station hit by thieves, said he fears being unable to do so because of stolen cables. Seattle has become a hot spot for the theft of electric vehicle (EV) charging cords, which are rich in copper. Charging provider Electrify America reported that a single station in Georgetown had more than 50 cables stolen over the past couple years. In that same amount of time, a different station in University Village criminals nabbed more than 20. "Unfortunately, the theft of charging cables is on the rise," said Rachel Moses with Electrifying America.

Sons of Speed Publisher Paul Herrold sits in for Jill this week. Paul and Tom opened the show talking about the discontinued Fiat 500X and related Jeep Renegade small crossovers. Tom asked Paul if he thought Jeep's recent sales decline came—at least in part—as a result of the brand's small, too-conventional crossovers, such as the Renegade, Compass, and Cherokee. Paul talked about four new Sons of Speed videos available for viewing at WeAreMotorDrive.com. The videos feature lap time at Road America race track, and include the Toyota GR Corolla, Volkswagen GTI, BMW M2, and Toyota Supra. Following up on Jill's EV charging issues from a week earlier, Tom shared a tale of similar frustration, including broken Evgo charging units—which were listed as operational on the provider's app—and Electrify America's over-hyped “Super Fast” charging. In the second segment Paul and Tom welcome Ram Communications Manager Trevor Dorchies to the show. Trevor updated the hosts on product in the Ram pipeline, including the redesigned 1500 pickup, the RAM REV electric pickup, and the extended-range plug-in-hybrid Ram Ramcharger. Also discussed is the new, ultra-luxury Ram 1500 Tungsten. In the last segment Paul is subjected to Tom's “Best Mileage” quiz, which includes a surprising Burger King bonus question. The hosts wrapped up the show by discussing why Tom's test vehicle, the 2024 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro, makes Tom want to shoot a water buffalo.
Jill and Tom opened the show discussing the best things they ate Thanksgiving Day. After a shoutout to a regular listener who would like the Car Stuff Podcast back on broadcast radio, the hosts turned their attention to Jill's holiday-week experience attempting to travel to and from Chicago and Indianapolis in an electric vehicle. While the car performed well, Jill lamented the lack of charging opportunities along that route, and was frustrated by the long wait to charge at the single level-3 public charger along the way. In the second segment, the hosts welcome Ed Kim, president of AutoPacfic, to the program. Ed weighed in on the recently announced Hyundai/Amazon.com deal, by which customers will soon be able to order their Hyundai vehicles on the Amazon website. Ed also cleared up some misconceptions about the growing EV supplies, and Tesla's recent price cuts. In the third segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Cyber Monday Auto Gifts” quiz. Jill also shared her impressions of the recently redesigned Toyota Prius Limited AWD.
