Want to understand cars better? This is the show. David Twohig is an automotive engineer, journalist, and author. He was an engineering lead for the Nissan Qashqai, Alpine A110, Renault Zoe, and BYTON. On this episode he explains why cars are so hard to build; why focusing on weight isn't the priority of most OEMs; how expensive it is to change a button; the rising popularity of '90s Japanese cars in Europe; and so much more. His book, "Inside the Machine: An Engineer's Tale of the Modern Automotive Industry" is a great insight into how difficult it is to build a car. The book gives some insight into why car companies do what they do and make the decisions they make. If you've ever asked "Why did they do that?" this book might give you some understanding.https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/59522165https://www.the-intercooler.com/library/writers/david-twohig/ https://www.cargroup.org/person/david-twohig/ Recorded May 26, 2023 Head to factormeals.com/tire50 and use code tire50 to get 50% off your first box Get 20% OFF with our code TIRE at calderalab.com/TIRE to unlock your youthful glow and be ready for summer with Caldera + Lab! #teamcaldera #ad Go to birddogs.com/tire and enter promo code TIRE for a free Yeti style tumbler with your order.

Richard Edwards hosts this week's Auto Media Group weekly wrap panel alongside AutoTalk news editor Matthew Hansen and industry consultant Graeme Macdonald.Together the trio discusses the biggest stories of the motoring week, including the confirmation of a scappage scheme for the New Zealand market, the government's budget release, the Renault Zoe's departure from the market, and much more.
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 29th January. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. WHY HEAT PUMPS COULD BE THE FUTURE OF HOME HEATING When it came time to decarbonise my travel, there were already some great choices of electric vehicle on the market when I wanted to buy one. As many of you know our first EV, many years ago, was the original Renault Zoe. After you've bought your first EV, many people turn to other things in their life which needs to be cleaned up. And one of those is home heating. I remember growing up in the 1980s with overnight cheap rate electricity, which would be used to heat storage heaters, which would give heat slowly during the day. They were honestly terrible! But they were electric. In all of my adult life, in every house I've owned or rented, we've always had gas heating. And often gas cooking as well. In fact 17 million homes in the UK alone still used gas boilers, they burn tonnes of fossil fuels to stay warm. But only recently on my visit to Octopus Energy did I discover that 1.5 million people in the UK replace their boilers every single year! That seems to me even higher than the amount of people who replaced their cars every year. If we can replace our cars to be green, why not our boilers, and heat our homes with electricity? The answer of course is that there has been no suitable alternative until recently. I was invited, alongside my friend Nick Raimo from the EV Nick YouTube channel, to go and look inside a secret research building owned by Octopus Energy. From the outside you'd never know what was to be found locked away inside. On the outskirts of London, in a giant warehouse, Octopus Energy have built two real life detached houses. One built exactly to 1970s building specifications, and a second one built to more modern standards. Inside they are decorated, furnished, and if you didn't know better look like any other home. We were invited down there before Christmas to have a look at the work octopus are doing with heat pump technology. We discovered that heat pumps have been around for 160 years, and when you think about it we use them every day. Our kitchen fridge is just a reverse heat pump. The advantage of heating our homes with a heat pump is that they are crazy efficient. However until today, we just never had the technology to decarbonize our home heating and make it as responsive as a gas boiler. Heat pumps use electricity to exchange heat, taking energy from the cold side and moving it to the inside. For every kilowatt of electricity I heat pump uses, it creates between two and four kilowatts of heat. There four times as efficient as a traditional boiler. Just as I'm always saying on this podcast, we need to provide people the help and support they need to buy an electric car. And exactly the same applies to home insulation, solar PV, solar thermal, and heat pumps. Nick and I spoke to Jon Szymek [Shim-mek], CEO of Octopus Energy Services, to find out more. I started by asking Jon why we need to bin our gas boilers…. NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Tom Moloughney's Lucid Air 70mph range test yielded a real world highway range of 500 miles. That raises the bar by a huge amount and make the Lucid Air easily the longest range EV ever tested. But…do EV's ever need a range of 500 miles? RENAULT-NISSAN-MITSUBISHI KICKS UP A GEAR IN E-MOBILITY PLANNING The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has unveiled a joint electromobility roadmap until 2030, which envisages investments of a further 23 billion euros over the next five years. The roadmap thus goes beyond what had been leaked in advance. According to Renault's announcement, however, there will be 35 new electric vehicle models, based on five electric car platforms. A central pillar of the joint electric strategy is also the alliance's new joint battery strategy. This includes, among other things, the selection of a joint battery supplier for Renault and Nissan in the core markets. The goal is to reduce battery costs by 50 per cent by 2026 and 65 per cent by 2028. https://www.electrive.com/2022/01/27/renault-nissan-mitsubishi-kicks-up-a-gear-in-e-mobility-planning/ Nissan will lead the development of all-solid-state battery technology for all three carmakers, while Renault will lead development of common centralised electrical and electronic architecture. The five platforms are: CMF-AEV, which the alliance says will be the most affordable platform in the world, is the base for the new Dacia Spring. KEI-EV (mini vehicle) platform family for ultra-compact EVs. LCV-EV Family platform family for professional customers, as the base for the Renault Kangoo and Nissan Town Star. CMF-EV, the global, flexible, EV platform. It will be on the roads in a few weeks as the base for the Nissan Ariya EV crossover and Renault Megane E-Tech Electric. The CMF-EV platform, with its technological innovations and the potential offered by its modularity, is a benchmark platform for a new generation of electric vehicles for the Alliance partners. The platform has been created to integrate and optimise all the elements specific to a 100% electric powertrain, hosting a new, high-performance motor and an ultra-thin battery. By 2030, more than 15 models will be based on the CMF-EV platform, with up to 1.5 million cars produced on this platform per year. CMF-BEV, the most competitive compact electric platform in the world, to be launched in 2024. It provides up to 400 km range; its aerodynamics performances are outstanding, helping reduce cost by 33% and power consumption by more than 10% compared to the current Renault ZOE. It will be the base for 250,000 vehicles a year under the Renault, Alpine and Nissan brands. Among the vehicles are the Renault R5 and the new compact EV that will replace the Nissan Micra. Designed by Nissan and engineered by Renault, the new model is planned to be manufactured at Renault ElectriCity: the electric industrial center in Northern France. https://www.am-online.com/news/car-manufacturer-news/2022/01/27/renault-nissan-reveal-26bn-euro-electric-vehicle-plan Some of the headline figures had already been announced by each company, but it marks the first concrete target set collectively by the trio since the reorganisation of top executives at Japan's Nissan and France's Renault. That restructuring was triggered by the saga surrounding the 2018 arrest of former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn, which exposed rifts in the alliance. To achieve its goals, the alliance said it aimed to increase cooperation on common platforms from 60% to 80% of its models by 2026.The trio also announced a target of reaching a total EV battery production capacity of 220 gigawatt hours by the end of the decade https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/06/43/59/14/1000x563_cmsv2_bc48f31f-c1e6-53a1-bd6a-e23cbdf61c83-6435914.jpg NISSAN MICRA SUCCESSOR WILL BE AN EV Nissan has revealed a short teaser video previewing a sub-compact hatchback with round headlights and taillights, while also indicating that the model will receive a different name when it arrives in the metal. The new model is slated to be based on the CMF B-EV platform, shared with Renault, with the French automaker expected to use the platform for its own model, which will be the spiritual successor to the Renault 5 The successor to the Micra will be designed by Nissan but engineered by Renault in France and built there as well, at Renault's new ElectriCity manufacturing hub that has combined and repurposed several existing sites. https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a38924985/2024-nissan-micra-electric/ HERE'S A FIRST LOOK INSIDE THE VW ID. BUZZ, WHAT DO YOU THINK? This week, Volkswagen is giving journalists a first taste of the ID. Buzz during a "covered drive" event in Barcelona, Spain. Someone likely attending the event has posted the first photos of the electric van's interior on the VWIDTalk forum, giving us a look at the roomy and colorful cabin for the first time. While the dashboard is partially covered, we see enough to realize that the interior design is very similar to the ID.3 and ID.4. The multifunction steering wheel and the digital instrument cluster behind it look identical, as does the high-set central touchscreen. We can also spot storage spaces between the front seats and on the door panels, but the detail that caught forum visitors' attention the most is the lack of floor rails as showcased on the ID. Buzz Concept in 2017. On the design study, the clever system allowed the seats and center console to be moved around into various positions, making the interior adaptable to different uses. VW will only offer a long-wheelbase ID. Buzz in North America, while Europe will get a standard-wheelbase passenger version and an ID. The long-established site in western Saxony is the first large-scale facility of any volume manufacturer worldwide to switch over all production from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. Six models from the Volkswagen, Audi and CUPRA brands will now be manufactured in Zwickau based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). The plants in Emden (ID.4), Hanover (ID. Buzz) and Chattanooga (USA, ID.4) will be added to the electric vehicle production network this year. The Volkswagen brand has thus laid the foundations for building 1.2 million all-electric-vehicles at its sites in Europe, the USA and China in 2022 based on the MEB. https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/id-5-in-series-production-volkswagen-successfully-transforms-zwickau-site-into-an-electric-vehicle-production-plant/ BMW I3 TO CEASE PRODUCTION IN JULY AFTER NINE YEARS The BMW i3 is set to end production in just six months time, after a run of nine years and around 250,000 units sold. In an interview with Autocar, a BMW spokesperson confirmed the final example of the compact electric five-door is due to roll off BMW's production line in Leipzig, Germany in July ahead of a reorganisation of the manufacturing facility in preparation for a start of production for the upcoming third-generation Mini Countryman during the second half of 2022. Registrations of new "electrified" vehicles—including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery-electric cars combined—pushed past diesel in September 2020, but this is the first time battery-electric models have outsold diesels on their own, the report said. - In December 2021, more than one fifth of new cars sold across 18 European markets were all-electric, while diesel cars (including diesel hybrids) accounted for less than 19% of sales, according to the report, which is based on data compiled by the Financial Times and independent auto analyst Matthias Schmidt. - 176,000 battery-electric vehicles were sold in Western Europe that month, compared to around 160,000 diesel cars, the report said. That total is also an all-time record for European EV sales, and is more than 6% higher than the comparable figure for December 2020, according to the report. Together with the third MEB plant in Anhui, the annual production capacity will increase to up to 900,000 units in 2023, as VW China now reveals. - Until now, the production capacity of the plant in Anhui was not known. As the existing plants in Anting (by SAIC-VW) and Foshan (FAW-VW) are known to be designed for 300,000 units per year each, the third plant in Anhui will also come up to this production capacity. - Production capacity for MEB cars in China is already well above demand. Last year VW was able to deliver 70,625 ID. models in China. However, it must also be mentioned that VW only started deliveries of the ID.4 and later the ID.6 during the course of the year – towards the end of the year, deliveries increased after a slow start. NORTHVOLT BATTERY PLANT SPARKS INTO LIFE, A FIRST FOR EUROPE - Sweden's Northvolt said on Wednesday its new gigafactory in northern Sweden has assembled its first battery cell, making it the first European company to design and manufacture a battery on the continent. - The cell is of a prismatic cell format - a variety of thinner and lighter battery - and came off the assembly line on Tuesday. - Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson had told Reuters that the new factory would produce a battery this year "even if it means the first battery is made on New Year's Eve". - The company is aiming for the Skelleftea plant to achieve production capacity of 60 gigawatt hours (GWh) as it aims for at least a 20-25% market share in Europe by 2030. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/technology/northvolt-produces-first-battery-cell-sweden-gigafactory-2021-12-29/ - Tesla is due to launch its first factory in Europe shortly and Asian rivals have significant operations in Poland and Hungary - but no European firm had yet operated a significant facility until now. - The new factory, dubbed "Northvolt Ett" (Northvolt One) in Swedish, already employs 500 people and will likely have as many as 3,000 staff once it reaches full capacity. - The Swedish company, which has already raised funding of several billion euros, was founded in 2016 by Carlsson and Italian Paolo Cerruti, both former Tesla employees. - Its location, some 200 km from the Arctic Circle, was chosen because it is near important sites of renewable production in northern Sweden, including hydropower. The number of gross reservations (since the ID.4 introduction in March 2021) has increased to more than 40,000 (as of mid-December), out of which over 15,000 cars were sold. - Assuming that there were not many resignations, there are still some 25,000 ID.4 buyers waiting for Volkswagen to ramp up production and sales, which is not easy considering production constraints and high demand also in Europe. - The good news is that in 2022, the company intends to launch localized production of the ID.4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Battery cells for the cars will be supplied by SK Innovation's SK On from the new battery plant in Commerce, Georgia. An automaker's Prime Directive is to produce vehicles that open their doors and drive off on the first attempt, just as a telephone that struggles with audio calls is flawed, no matter how marvelous its other capacities. But five years from now, nobody will remember the glitchy door handles I experienced in early-production vehicles. THE TESLA MODEL 3 - The Tesla Model 3 has only been in Europe for a couple of years now, but it has been an instant hit. In 2021, it is expected to be the best-selling EV there, topping competitors like the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Renault Zoe, according to a new report. You can see why Tesla CEO Elon Musk is so anxious to get Tesla's factory in Germany up and running. - That report, published in Automotive News, also says that, unsurprisingly, Tesla will be the best-selling EV brand, too, though Volkswagen will be the best-selling EV company, by virtue of selling EVs not just with the Volkswagen marque but also electric Audis, Cupras, Skodas, and Porsches, too. - Sales of the Model 3 jumped 84 percent to 113,397 through November, according to data from JATO Dynamics market researcher. Volkswagen's ID3 compact hatchback is likely to be at No. 2. ID3 sales rose 125 percent to 63,109 in the first 11 months. The Renault Zoe, 2020's best-selling EV is on track to be No. 3. Through 11 months, Zoe sales were 60,551, down 27 percent. For those not in the know, the Ryzen (formerly Atom) is responsible for handling infotainment duties on Tesla EVs. It's directly responsible for the screen's responsiveness when activating menus, playing games, loading apps like YouTube or Netflix, and swiping around the navigational map. - The first Model 3 and Y vehicles with MCU3 (Infotainment Computer with AMD Ryzen) are now being produced and delivered in North America! - One other notable change coming alongside the Ryzen chip is the inclusion of a new, smaller Li-ion battery to power the vehicle's 12-volt system. This replaces the antiquated 12-volt lead-acid batteries found in almost every other internal combustion engine vehicle and previous Teslas. The Li-ion battery, which is shared with newer Model S and Model X vehicles, weighs just 4 pounds compared to 27 pounds for its lead-acid predecessor and should last the life of the car (instead of 2 to 4 years). Noticias One of Europe's top-selling EVs just got a 0/5 star safety rating. The plant will provide batteries for electric buses and vans produced at the company's microfactories in Rock Hill, South Carolina and Charlotte, respectively. - Arrival also agreed to collaborate with Li-Cycle, a lithium-ion battery recycler, to create a closed-loop EV battery supply chain. Like most other automakers, Arrival is recognizing the reality of supply chain delays and materials shortages and is working to vertically integrate as much of the process as possible, while also maintaining its commitment to sustainability. - Arrival will be refitting an existing warehouse in order to start production in the third quarter of 2022 - Arrival's battery chemistry supplier is LG. The plant should have a production capacity of up to 350,000 battery modules per year, which can be used across Arrival's different commercial vehicle platforms and can be tailored to suit the customer's specific battery requirements, according to the company. NORWAY MARKS 11,274 NEW BEVS SOLD OVER NOVEMBER - In Norway, 11,274 new electric cars were registered in November. Electric cars thus reached a share of 73.8 per cent of all passenger car registrations in the month. In addition, there were 2,653 new plug-in hybrids. The most popular model was the Tesla Model Y with 1,013 registrations. - The more than 11,000 new registrations in November bring the figure for the current year close to 100,000 vehicles. From the beginning of January to the end of November, 99,948 pure electric cars were newly registered in Norway, according to the Norwegian Road Information Authority (OFV). This corresponds to a market share of 64.2 per cent in the current year. This figure refers to purely battery-electric cars; hybrid vehicles are not counted here. - In total, 91.2 per cent of all new passenger cars in Norway had an external charging connection in November – exactly the same level as in September with the Tesla boost; in October, the figure had fallen back to just under 90 per cent. By comparison, petrol-only cars had a market share of 2.3 per cent and diesel-only cars 2.7 per cent. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/12/02/norway-marks-11274-new-bevs-sold-over-november/ AFFORDABLE DACIA SPRING TAKES POLE AS FRANCE HITS RECORD 23.5% PLUGIN EV SHARE "November saw France, Europe's second largest auto market, hit a record 23.5% plugin electric vehicle share, up from 14.8% share a year ago. Legacy diesels and plugless hybrids continued to stagnate below 20% share" Europe's most affordable all-electric, the Dacia Spring, took the #1 spot for plugins in November at 2895 sales. The Dacia Spring, following its extremely rapid climb to Europe's fourth most popular BEV in October, became France's top seller in November, with 2895 units delivered. This puts it well ahead of the long term favourite Renault Zoe, at 2189 units. The Spring's success makes perfect sense — it is the most affordable BEV in Europe, and starts from around €12,400 in France after various incentives. November is the first month it has been available in these volumes in the country. The Spring's success speaks volumes about European consumers' largely unmet demand for affordable BEVs. This is the revolution waiting in the wings for anyone bringing affordable (sub €20,000 or even sub €15,000) electric vehicles to the European market. The Spring is the first to do so, but won't be the last. The BYD Yuan, and BYD Dolphin, both in the top 20 in China, will also do very well in Europe, for example, if they can start well below €20,000. November's combined plugin result of 23.5% comprised full battery electrics (BEVs) at 13.5%, with plugin hybrids (PHEVs) taking 10.0%. This continues the recent trend of reweighting towards BEVs · Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/12/01/affordable-dacia-spring-takes-pole-as-france-hits-record-23-5-plugin-ev-share/ AUDI ALSO BUILDING Q4 E-TRON IN BRUSSELS - Audi plans to build its recently launched Q4 e-tron electric SUV in Brussels in the future. Production is scheduled to start there in November. The Automobilwoche learned this from corporate circles. The reason is the high demand for the volume model. The final decision will be made by the VW planning round on December 9th. He posted the resulting video on his State of Charge YouTube Channel and in this IEVs article. - some viewers and readers misinterpreted the charging results as “proving Lucid lied about the battery pack size”, apparently suggesting that Lucid is “cooking the books” and installing a larger-than-claimed battery pack to make puffed-up charging speed and range efficiency claims. They appeared confused by the fact that Electrify America billed Tom for 134 kWh of electrical energy delivered to the vehicle during the charge session. Delivered to a pack with only 118 kWh capacity. - Based on my experience, thermal-modeling the heating losses incurred in extreme fast-charging sessions, it's the law. Ohm's law. And the 2nd law of thermodynamics. The 2nd law says “there are always losses in an energy transfer process”. And in an EV battery charging session, those losses are determined by Ohm's Law. Heat generated in a circuit = the current I (in amps) squared x the circuit's resistance R (in ohms). Heat = I2R - Suffice to say that for the first five minutes of charging at 300 kW and 350 amps, the battery pack resistance was generating over 20 kW of heat. That pack weighs over 550 kg, yet that 20 kW heat is so intense it likely heated up every cell in that mass from 31⁰ C to their maximum rated 45⁰ C temperature in those first few minutes, with the AC compressor, glycol pumps, and radiator fan all screaming at peak load, drawing an extra 4-5 kWh of power. - Rapidly adding 118 kWh to this pack and only suffering 16 kWh of 2nd-law losses is an EV engineering miracle, not a false-marketing conspiracy. The range of the Mokka-e, which went on sale in 2020 and most recently won the famous “Golden Steering Wheel 2021”2, has increased to 338 km1 (WLTP). - The range increases have been achieved, for example, through the optimisation of the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) and propulsion systems of the Opel Corsa-e and Opel Mokka-e. - The efficiency of the heat pump, which warms and cools the interior and is standard equipment on both models, is now even higher than before. Heat pumps are more efficient than conventional HVAC systems, as they require less energy from the battery, to the benefit of driving range. Customers will notice the improvements particularly when driving in the winter months. BRENDAN HUTCHINS The environment has been a 10/10 reason I wanted an ev since I first heard of them years ago. Now with how freaking cool they are I'd say a 9/10, not because the environment is any less of a reason, but because all the other cool aspects are 10% of why I want one now, too. Home charging Cheaper to run Less maintenance High tech Luxury Instant torque All freaking awesome, and would make me want an ev over an ice alone, but the environment is just too important for it not to be the biggest reason by far. RAJEEV NARAYAN For me the environment was a solid 7 for why I initially got into EVs, not just the devastating impacts of climate change, as discussed by the IPCC report you mentioned, but also the health impacts; There is a recent study published by Harvard's school of public health showing that almost one in 5 deaths worldwide are due to fossil fuel particulates, and infants are particularly susceptible, as you have also pointed out. But in addition to the above, fossil fuel subsidies have gotten out of hand. There was an IMF study Showing that 5.2 trillion US dollars were spent globally on fossil fuel subsidies, which was equivalent of over 6.5% of global GDP, the U.S. alone spent 649 billion in 2017, which is more that we spent on Defense! The worldwide opportunity cost of that expenditure is staggering. EDUARD PERTINEZ My main interest in EVs is intelligence and rational as species. I want human beings to be intelligent and understand that we must pursue a 100% renewable future. Not because it is good or bad, but because it is beautiful. In this sense, burning any fuel or nuclear deposit is not an option, however clean it can be. Even if we found our way to clean nuclear fission, I wouldn't pursue it as long as that would lead to an overmassificated earth, with little to no space for wild life. The only intelligent and proudly option is to create a long lasting renewable society that uses sunlight for its needed energy, and that is electrical energy and that means EV's. So environment is 10 out of 10, simply because the goal, for me, is equilibrium. SCOTT BERGER Like you, I was first drawn to EV cars because I had a chance to drive one early on and was immediately smitten. I'm a person who buys cars first and foremost for performance and fun driving. After an autocross day in my brother's (2013) Fiat 500e I was sold. My earlier experiences with a Tesla Model S were less impressive to me due to the astronomical cost. Since then, range and prices came down enough to buy my first EV, a Kia Niro EV. A major part of the calculus was my 50-mile round-trip commute. I was spending too much money on fuel. With off-peak charging I am now saving nearly $10/day in fuel alone just on my commute. I have since changed to an ID.4. Now, as I live in an area in the northern US seeing its worst drought in more than 30 years, climate aspects are increasingly nearing the top of my list. We are in a climate emergency. With that said, I've also been riding my e-bike as much as possible for simple errands around town, and walking to pick up my kids for daycare each day instead of driving. (Even driving an EV is less "green" than walking, as you know.) In summary, currently my list of reasons I drive an EV is roughly as follows: 1. cost of operation 2. environment 3. fun 4. reliability 5. tech 6. stress-free driving DAVID ALLEN It was always about the environment from the start. My wife and I planned to transition to EV/Solar/Geothermal over the course of a decade. We started in 2014 swapping out our Hyundai Elantra for a used 2012 Nissan Leaf. We then swapped out our Nissan Sentra for a used 2017 Volt. We then moved to a single story house (less problematic for my wife who has MS) which also had a nice South-facing roof, and began installing solar, which was done in three phases from 2015-2019. Next the Volt was traded for a Tesla Model 3, and our gasoline consumption dropped to zero (from 1000+ gallons annually in 2014). The last step will be to replace our gas furnace with a ground source heat pump in the next 2-3 years. All of the fun and savings have been icing on the cake. ALAN NORTHCUTT my ranking for environmental reasons to buy an EV is 10. because of my understanding of the climate crisis i realized i must drive an EV and bought a Bolt immediately after release, and later a Model 3. JAKOB GOLDMAN, KANSAS On a scale of one to ten , I would give environment #1 as a motivator for EV purchase. DOUG VOWLES I wish I could say “10” for environmental reasons, but in all honesty it was probably “8”, with a few guilty points in there for the attractions of cool tech. Two years later, I still believe that electric cars are way better than their gas predecessors, but am coming to realize that improving components of a broken system is not good enough. Cars are still part of a massive resource consumption lifestyle that is killing us, and the planet. So I'm happy to see increased numbers of electric cars, solar farms, etc., but it's not going to be enough. We have a full system problem, and there's little recognition of it, or sense of urgency to fix it. RAJ BADWAL So! Interesting question this week.. So when I bought my Leaf 24 back in 2016.. the environment benefit to me was a nice to have (2 out of 10). But like everyone else, when I started my EV journey I leaned what a kWh was and started to understand and think about where that energy came from. Fast forward 5 years I now drive a Tesla LR as the "main" car so 100% on my driving is electric and I use 100% renewable energy from our friends at Octopus. We are also looking to install solar with battery and air source heat pump to remove gas from out home to become as CO2 neutral as we can. So in a nut shell, it was a 2 but now a 10!

TESLA LOWERS PRICE OF MODEL 3 SR+ IN CHINA - Tesla updated its online design studio in China with a new price for the locally produced Model 3 Standard Range Plus version. It's now noticeably less expensive. - Model 3 starts at 251,740 yuan ($38,960), which is about 14,000 yuan (2,166) or 5.3% less than in January 2021 (265,740 yuan). After including a subsidy of 15,840 yuan ($2,451) the effective price is 235,900 yuan ($36,508). - The estimated delivery time of both versions is 4-6 weeks. The main question is whether Tesla will lower the prices of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus also in other markets, like Europe and the U.S.? But it won't help meet President Joe Biden's ambitious goal to cut carbon emissions in half by 2030. - Experts in urban policy and electrification told The Verge that the money authorized for a nationwide network of EV chargers would have a measurable impact on Americans' car-buying choices. The $1 trillion deal ($550 billion of which is new spending) includes $7.5 billion to fund Biden's plan to build half a million EV chargers across the country - If this deal passes, though, it will likely entrench — not disrupt — the transportation habits of millions of Americans.
