Interview with Mark Selby, CEO of Canada NickelOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/canada-nickel-tsxvcnc-crawford-project-advances-with-feed-completion-eyes-2025-construction-6791Recording date: 13th May 2025Canada Nickel Corporation (TSX: CNC) presents a compelling investment opportunity as it advances North America's most promising nickel project in the face of unprecedented government support and institutional capital returning to the mining sector. CEO Mark Selby's leadership has positioned the company to capitalize on what he describes as "the world's largest nickel sulfide district" in Timmins, Ontario, with the flagship Crawford project now approaching a construction decision after completing its FEED study and progressing through permitting. The company's innovative financing strategy has set it apart during challenging capital markets, executing its fourth successful bridge financing arrangement to avoid dilutive equity raises while maintaining project momentum. Recent financing totaling $39-40 million, including a groundbreaking partnership with TTN First Nation, demonstrates management's ability to access capital through non-traditional channels. This approach recognizes the fundamental shift in mining finance, where actively managed funds have "shrunk very dramatically over the last 15 years" and become concentrated in gold, copper, and silver.Political tailwinds have never been stronger for critical mineral projects in North America. The Trump administration's supply chain security focus, combined with Canada's new government under Carney promising to accelerate critical mineral development, creates multiple funding pathways for projects like Crawford. The Canadian government has established numerous funding programs worth billions, though deployment has been slow until now. With both governments prioritizing critical mineral security and upcoming USMCA renegotiations, Canada Nickel is positioned to benefit from what Selby describes as "monster bold steps forward" in government support.Unlike many nickel companies dependent solely on the EV market, Canada Nickel has strategically designed its operations for market flexibility. The company can direct 100% of production to the stainless steel and alloy markets, which continue to show strong growth (China's 300 series stainless production up 12% year-over-year), while maintaining optionality for EV sales through its Samsung SDI offtake agreement. This diversification provides crucial revenue stability as some automotive manufacturers, including Honda, reassess their EV timelines.Perhaps most significantly for near-term share price performance, generalist institutional investors are returning to mining after a decade-long absence. Selby reports that recent conferences included multiple meetings with generalist funds, representing a fundamental shift from resource-only investors. These funds see relative value in a sector trading at "5 and 10% of NPV" compared to broader markets at high multiples. When generalist capital moves from "0.05% of assets to 0.1% to 0.25%," it creates what Selby describes as "a tidal wave of capital."The company has outlined a comprehensive $3 billion funding package with multiple committed sources including $500 million from Export Development Canada, $600 million in refundable tax credits, $100 million from Samsung, and additional potential funding from European agencies and Canadian government programs. With permitting on track for year-end completion and detailed engineering advancing, Canada Nickel is positioned to make its final investment decision and benefit from first-mover advantage in one of the world's most promising nickel districts. For investors, Canada Nickel represents exposure to critical mineral supply chain security, innovative financing structures, and the convergence of government support with returning institutional interest—all while maintaining operational flexibility that provides downside protection in volatile markets.—View Canada Nickel's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/canada-nickelSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Interview with Mark Selby, CEO of Canada NickelOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/canada-nickel-tsxvcnc-advances-2b-crawford-project-with-construction-decision-set-by-2025-6249Recording date: 16th December 2024Canada Nickel Company (CNC) is advancing its Crawford Nickel Sulfide Project in Ontario's Timmins mining district toward a construction decision in 2025. The project is positioned to become the Western world's largest nickel sulfide operation, targeting the growing demand for battery metals in the electric vehicle sector. The company recently secured a landmark $20 million investment from Taykwa Tagamou Nation (TTN), a local First Nations group, through a convertible debenture - marking the largest First Nations investment in a Canadian mining project to date. This follows earlier strategic investments from major industry players including Anglo American, Agnico Eagle, and Samsung SDI, demonstrating strong market confidence in the project.Crawford's development has reached a crucial milestone with the filing of its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which has been accepted by the government. The project is now in a 365-day review period for permitting approval. The strong support from local communities and First Nations groups is expected to play a vital role in securing final approvals. The project benefits from its location in the established Timmins mining camp, with access to existing infrastructure including rail, highways, and low-cost hydroelectric power. This infrastructure advantage is expected to reduce capital requirements compared to more remote projects. The stable jurisdiction of Ontario adds another layer of security for investors.Canada Nickel's management team brings significant industry experience, including former executives from Inco, once the world's largest nickel producer. The team's track record includes successfully advancing the Dumont project from resource stage to construction readiness at RNC Minerals. The Crawford deposit's sulfide mineralization is particularly attractive for battery manufacturers, offering superior economics and environmental benefits compared to laterite deposits. This positions the project well within the growing electric vehicle supply chain, where Class 1 nickel from sulfide deposits is preferred for battery production. The company notes that Crawford represents a rare opportunity in the nickel sector, being the only large-scale project in Canada to file an environmental impact statement since 2019. This scarcity of new projects, combined with increasing demand for battery-grade nickel, creates a favorable market position for Canada Nickel. The project also holds additional exploration potential within the broader Timmins Nickel District, which the company believes could become the world's largest nickel sulfide resource. With strong strategic backing, experienced management, and advancing development milestones, Canada Nickel appears well-positioned to meet the growing demand for battery-grade nickel in North America.View Canada Nickel's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/canada-nickelSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Interview with Mark Selby, CEO of Canada NickelOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/canada-nickel-tsxvcnc-1st-resource-of-7-new-resources-all-by-q125-5708Recording date: 10th September 2024Canada Nickel Company is emerging as a significant player in the critical minerals sector, focusing on developing large-scale nickel projects in the Timmins district of Ontario. Led by CEO Mark Selby, the company is advancing its flagship Crawford nickel sulfide project while simultaneously exploring multiple targets across the region, aiming to establish what could become the world's largest nickel sulfide district. The company's strategy is built on several key pillars. First, it focuses on large-scale resources, with the Crawford project poised to become one of the largest nickel sulfide operations in the Western world. Canada Nickel has also identified seven other exploration targets, planning to publish resources for six of them by mid-next year, showcasing the district-wide potential. Second, the company employs innovative financing, having secured significant funding without heavily diluting existing shareholders. This includes a $500 million USD letter of interest from Export Development Canada, $600 million in refundable tax credits from the Canadian government, and a $100 million commitment from Samsung SDI. The company plans to bring in a project partner for an additional $300-400 million, further de-risking the project. Third, Canada Nickel maintains a strong ESG focus, positioning itself to meet the growing demand for "clean, green" nickel from automakers and battery manufacturers. Its projects in Timmins offer the potential for environmentally responsible nickel production, aligning with stringent ESG criteria. Fourth, the company benefits from substantial government support, with its projects closely aligning with Canada's critical minerals strategy, resulting in significant financial incentives and potential for streamlined permitting processes. Finally, despite being a low-grade deposit, the company argues for the economic viability of its projects due to operational efficiencies, processing advantages, and existing infrastructure in the Timmins region.Investors should note several key upcoming milestones for Canada Nickel. The company plans to publish six additional resources by mid-next year, significantly expanding its nickel inventory. Within the next year, Canada Nickel expects to receive key permits for the Crawford project, a crucial step towards development. The company is also working on finalizing its debt package and securing a project-level equity partner, which will further solidify its financial position. Perhaps most importantly, a potential final investment decision on Crawford is anticipated within the next 12-18 months, marking a pivotal moment in the company's progression from explorer to producer. These milestones collectively represent significant potential catalysts for the company's valuation and investor interest. The investment thesis for Canada Nickel is underpinned by the growing global demand for nickel in electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems. As major automakers and governments push for secure, responsible sources of critical minerals, Canada Nickel's projects in a stable jurisdiction like Canada could command a premium. However, investors should also be aware of potential risks, including nickel market volatility, execution risks associated with developing multiple large-scale projects, and the reliance on effective implementation of processing technologies for low-grade ore.Overall, Canada Nickel represents a unique opportunity in the critical minerals space, offering exposure to the rapidly growing EV and battery storage markets, backed by tangible assets and strong government support. As the company progresses towards production and continues to expand its resource base, it may attract increased attention from both institutional investors and strategic industry partners. For investors looking to capitalize on the clean energy transition and critical minerals boom, Canada Nickel warrants serious consideration.View Canada Nickel's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/canada-nickelSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Furthermore, I will reveal to you any personal investments I have in the investments mentioned herein. Additionally, quotes about individual companies are brief. Please go to this podcast's webpage for links to the actual articles for more company and stock information. Also, some companies might be covered more than once and there are also 2 article links below that time didn't allow me to review them here. ------------------------------------------------------------- The Top 3 Renewable Energy Stocks Targeting 50% Upside by 2028 As we approach the summer holiday period the number of suitable articles for this podcast usually declines. And that's what's beginning to happen now. However, there are still some great articles worth covering for you. I'm going to start with this one titled The Top 3 Renewable Energy Stocks Targeting 50% Upside by 2028. It's by Terel Miles and found on msn.com. Here's some of what Mr. Miles says about his picks. “1. First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) The company has skyrocketed more than 60% year to date, and it is just getting started. First Solar's expertise spans the entire solar value chain, from module manufacturing to project development and energy services. Moreover, artificial intelligence is set to boost demand for solar and energy storage solutions in data centers. In Q1 FY24, revenue increased 45% year-over-year (YOY) to $794 million. Earnings per share (EPS) skyrocketed 456% YOY to $2.20 per share, with gross margins up sequentially. As the company ramps up manufacturing capacity in 2024, First Solar stock should certainly be kept on your radar. 2. NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) As the world's largest producer of wind and solar energy, NextEra is at the forefront of the clean energy transition.  NextEra Energy's focus on innovation coupled with its strong financial performance, position it as a reliable investment choice… In the 2023 fiscal year…. revenue swelled 34% YOY to $28.11 billion, with EPS up 71% to $3.60 per share. They delivered extremely impressive results, amid inflation and higher interest rates. Its backlog also remains robust, as the company's subsidiaries, FPL & NextEra Energy Resources, deliver best in class services… Management has forecast 10% dividend growth through 2026. This makes NextEra Energy's stock one of the best renewable energy stocks to buy now. 3. ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ:ON) is a global leader in power management and sensing solutions, playing a critical role in the advancement of renewable energy technologies. The company's products are essential components in various renewable energy applications, from solar inverters, to electric vehicles and energy storage systems.  ON Semiconductor is having a tough year in 2024. It is still up against the slump in the EV market, as well as the broader slowdown in renewable energy projects. However, this is only temporary, and they have an exciting long term growth trajectory ahead. ON Semi's powerful silicon carbide (SiC) platform appeals to a wide variety of industries. This includes automation, industrial, healthcare, and aerospace. ON Semi is laying the foundation for accelerated growth over the next decade.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- These Alternative Energy Stocks Are Poised for Takeoff Continuing on this renewable energy theme is this second article titled These Alternative Energy Stocks Are Poised for Takeoff. It's by Michael Lebowitz. It appeared on investing.com and offers his assessments of companies engaged in many aspects of the alternative energy sector. Here are some quotes from him. “1. Battery Diversification May Be Critical Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF (NYSE:LIT) is far and away the largest (of this sector's etfs), with nearly $1.5 billion AUM. While it invests in companies with new battery technology, it also ‘invests in the full lithium cycle, from mining and refining the metal, through battery production.' Its top three holdings are lithium producers. Amplify Lithium & Battery Technology ETF (NYSE:BATT) is the second largest ETF with a mere $89 million in AUM. Like Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF, they invest in lithium producers like BHP (BHP) and Albemarle (NYSE:ALB). If you want to make investments in individual companies, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) (battery technologies), LG Chem (051910.KS) and Samsung SDI (006400.KS) are well-positioned in the industry. 2. Lithium Miners Assuming lithium remains a crucial component in electricity storage batteries, its miners should do well, especially given the recent decline in lithium prices and the related stocks. Albemarle (ALB) is the world's top lithium producer and the largest producer by market cap. It is the only lithium producer of size based in the US. Like the rest of the alternative energy sector, its stock has traded poorly recently. However, with a forward P/E of 16, there is value if its revenues continue upward at their recent pace. We caution you that lithium deposits are being actively explored. Assuming success, the lithium supply may limit the price appreciation of lithium. 3. Utility and Grid Operators Utilities will generate more power, thus increasing their revenue. However, they must invest significant capital to modernize, expand, and reduce greenhouse emissions. (Here are some companies the author comments on.) Dominion Energy (NYSE:D) in Virginia and Entergy (NYSE:ETR) in Texas are the two utility companies that may be the biggest beneficiaries of the growth of AI data centers. Both stocks have relatively low forward P/E's of approximately 14 and dividend yields of 4.25% for Dominion Energy and 5.50% for Entergy. It will be crucial to follow their margins to see how effectively they offset the expansion costs with rising revenue. Constellation Energy (CEG) and NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) are also worth tracking as they invest heavily in renewable energy infrastructure and will benefit from increased demand. We would add Duke (DUK) and Southern Company (NYSE:SO) to the list of companies to follow. 4. Technology and AI Firms Companies specializing in AI software for energy efficiency and management will find opportunities in this evolving landscape. Some of the more prominent names in this sector include IBM (NYSE:IBM), Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), and GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV). 5. Physical Plant Expansion Companies that supply utility plants with generators, transformers, circuit breakers, and switchboards, among many other parts, will undoubtedly benefit from power grid expansion. (These include.) GE Vernova, Eaton (NYSE:ETN), Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR), Emerson Electric (NYSE:EMR), and Siemens (ENR.DE). 6. Water/Cooling The average data center uses 300,000 gallons of water a day to cool its equipment. That is the equivalent of the water used by 100,000 homes. Therefore, companies that can develop cheap cooling solutions for data centers will be in high demand. (Companies so engaged include.) Vertiv Holdings (NYSE:VRT)… a leader in this segment. Its shares have risen tenfold since it went public in 2019 and now trades at a P/E of 100. It's a high-risk, high-reward stock, not for the faint of heart. 7. Infrastructure ETFs There are many other businesses set to profit from the coming infrastructure boom. Those looking for a diversified investment approach in the power grid may want to explore thematic ETFs. For example, the First Trust Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Fund (GRID) holds 103 positions. Beyond diversification and portfolio manager expertise, the fund can buy stocks in foreign markets, which many US investors do not have access to or are uncomfortable with. iShares U.S. Infrastructure ETF (IFRA) is a similar fund with a different basket of stocks and approach toward investing in the industry. The bottom line is we are confident the expansion and modernization of the power grid will be highly profitable for some companies… Diversification will prove to be essential for investors.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- MTB Named A Top Socially Responsible Dividend Stock Now many of you also like dividend-paying stocks, so I'm including this recent article on a socially responsible bank stock. It's titled MTB Named A Top Socially Responsible Dividend Stock by Just2Trade and found at j2t.com. Here are some brief quotes from the article. “M & T Bank Corp (Symbol: MTB) has been named a Top Socially Responsible Dividend Stock by Dividend Channel, signifying a stock with above-average ‘DividendRank' statistics including a strong 3.7% yield, as well as being recognized by prominent asset managers as being a socially responsible investment… According to the ETF Finder at ETF Channel, M & T Bank Corp is a member of the iShares USA ESG Select ETF (SUSA), making up 0.10% of the underlying holdings of the fund, which owns $4,322,259 worth of MTB shares. The annualized dividend paid by M & T Bank Corp is $5.4/share.” ------------------------------------------------------------- Top 10: Sustainable Banks On the subject of banks, I thought to share this article with you as I know many of you are interested in banking with a bank or banks that prioritize social responsibility, ESG, and sustainability issues. Interview with Mark Selby, CEO of Canada Nickel. Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/canada-nickel-tsxvcnc-advancing-a-world-class-nickel-sulfide-project-5048Recording date: 16th May 2024Canada Nickel is advancing the Crawford nickel sulfide project, which is already the world's second largest nickel sulfide resource and reserve. They are also unlocking the potential of the Timmins nickel district in Ontario, Canada which could become the world's largest nickel sulfide district. With $35 million in funding secured in early 2024, Canada Nickel is executing on plans to grow the resource. Recent drilling at their Reid property suggests it has potential for a much larger, lower-strip ratio resource than their flagship Crawford deposit. Over the next 12 months, the company aims to publish 7 additional resources (totalling 8, including Crawford) with the potential for 6 additional discoveries in the district.Preliminary metallurgical testing at two other properties (Reid and MacDiarmid) using the same flowsheet as Crawford achieved the targeted 58-59% nickel recoveries and concentrate grades. This suggests the company can replicate the Crawford process at other deposits. From initial resource to full feasibility study at Crawford, it took just over three years—this timeline could be reduced for their other projects.Canada Nickel expects to have the Crawford project fully permitted and financed by the end of 2024. A feasibility study showed a robust 18% after-tax IRR for Crawford inclusive of carbon capture credits. Although the nickel grade is relatively low, the scale (40+ year mine life), location and existing infrastructure make it highly economic. The after-tax NPV was US$2.5B (C$3.5B) compared to the company's C$250M market cap.Anglo American, Glencore and Samsung SDI are cornerstone investors in Canada Nickel, validating the company and project. Canada Nickel is partnered with Ausenco, who have a strong track record of delivering base metal projects on time and budget, significantly de-risking the project. The Timmins region has significant infrastructure advantages (skilled labor, low-carbon grid power, highway and rail access) that enable development of large, lower-grade nickel deposits. Selby believes the district could produce the equivalent of 5 Crawford-sized mines over the next 10-15 years to meet the explosive growth in nickel demand from EVs.With the U.S. and Europe looking to secure domestic critical mineral supply chains and reduce reliance on China and Indonesia, Selby sees bifurcation of the nickel market, with consumers demanding "green" nickel. Canada Nickel is well positioned to help fill the supply gap for clean, ethical nickel in the coming years. The nickel price has performed well, reaching near $20,000/t - Selby sees potential for further gains as most analysts are underestimating demand growth which has been over 10% annually so far this decade. In summary, Canada Nickel offers compelling exposure to rising nickel demand, with a large, scalable and well-located nickel sulfide resource in a Tier 1 jurisdiction. Near-term catalysts include financing/permitting of Crawford, resource growth, and new discoveries.—Learn more: https://cruxinvestor.com/companies/canada-nickelSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Interview with Mark Selby, CEO of Canada NickelOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/canada-nickel-tsxvcnc-major-backers-validate-canada-nickels-potential-4809Recording date: 5th March 2024Canada Nickel (CNC) is emerging as a premier investment opportunity in the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. The company's flagship Crawford project in Ontario hosts the world's second-largest nickel sulfide resource and is on track to commence its first production by 2027.CNC has earned the backing of mining giants Anglo American and Agnico Eagle, as well as EV battery leader Samsung SDI. These industry heavyweights provide not only capital, but also invaluable technical, operational, and marketing expertise to de-risk and optimize Crawford. The Ontario and Canadian federal governments have also thrown their full support behind CNC, recognizing the viral role domestic critical mineral supply chains will play in the energy transition. With billions in government funding set to be deployed starting in mid-2024, CNC is well-positioned to access non-dilutive financing for Crawford and its newly established downstream processing business. While Crawford alone positions CNC as a globally significant nickel producer, the exploration upside across its Timmins properties is equally compelling. The company has identified seven additional targets with a combined footprint 10 times larger than Crawford's. By early 2025, CNC plans to publish maiden resources on these prospects which could vault it into the ranks of the world's largest nickel developers.Underpinning CNC's ambitious growth plans is the exponential demand growth expected for battery-grade nickel as EV adoption accelerates. Automakers and cell manufacturers are scrambling to lock in long-term supplies of responsibly sourced critical minerals. CNC's commitment to net zero emissions and strategic location in the mining-friendly jurisdiction of Canada make it a highly attractive partner. The company is not content to simply be a miner, however. Its newly established downstream processing unit, led by a team of industry veterans, aims to capture additional margin and qualify for generous government incentives by supplying battery-grade nickel directly to customers. For investors, CNC offers a unique combination of world-class assets, unparalleled exploration upside, strategic industry, government partnerships, and leverage to the EV supercycle. With the Crawford project approaching construction and a potential stream of new discoveries on the horizon, CNC appears poised to create substantial shareholder value in the years ahead as it cements its position as the go-to supplier of clean, zero-carbon nickel.View Canada Nickel's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/canada-nickelSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

If there were a holy grail of electric vehicle batteries, it would be low-weight, long-range, and fast-charging. It would last a million miles and cost less than anything produced today. So in the booming EV battery market, what kind of battery will check all those boxes? Who will invent it? And do we really need all those features in one battery in the first place? In this episode, Shayle talks to Sam Jaffe, vice president of battery solutions at E-Source. They trace the history of the two major competing lithium-ion chemistries: Lithium Iron (or ferrous) Phosphate (LFP) and Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC). Sam and Shayle also discuss the factors that shaped this competition, like China, Tesla, and access to capital. They discuss new partnerships between battery manufacturers and automakers, including LG and GM, Samsung SDI and Stellantis, ACC and Mercedes And they cover questions like: Who decides which chemistries to develop — automakers or battery part manufacturers?  Will a small number of chemistries dominate or will there be a rapid diversification of battery chemistries to meet different needs? Is fast charging a nice-to-have or need-to-have? Will the rising costs of battery materials, especially lithium, slow the adoption of EVs?  Plus, Sam explains why he is no longer bearish on vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging. It's a great Tuesday in the car business as we talk about the growing battle to build the biggest multi-billion dollar battery plant. We also summarize the challenges and activity of the charging network in America, as well as discuss a large grocery chain's decision to bump the baristas. It's a battle of the billions as General Motors and Samsung SDI announced plans to invest over $3 billion in a US-based joint venture EV battery manufacturing plant, while Hyundai announces a $5 billion EV battery joint venture in Georgia with SK On.GM and Samsung SDI's planned plant will have an annual production capacity of 30 GWh, starting in 2026.The Hyundai-SK On Georgia plant will begin battery cell production in the second half of 2025, with a 35 GWh capacity. This news comes as Hyundai just reported doubled net profits in Q1Since there is a looming, arguably arbitrary, governmental set goal to have 50% of vehicles be zero emissions by…2030, many experts suggest the need for over half a million public charging stations to be installed nationwide to service the need. France's plugin electric vehicle (EV) market share reached 23.8% in February, with full electrics driving the growth, while traditional combustion-only powertrains declined to 49%. The Dacia Spring remains the best-selling full electric, followed by Tesla's Model Y and Peugeot e208. Mazda North American Operations reported its best-ever February sales in the US, while the newly introduced Mazda MX-30 electric vehicle (EV) is not selling well in the US with only two sales in February. A minority German political party, the Free Democratic Party (FDP), is attempting to block the EU regulation to ban internal combustion light vehicles by 2035. The FDP wants biofuel-powered vehicles to be exempt, hoping to support the German car industry, but the EU regulation is necessary to ensure the transition to fully electric vehicles. General Motors (GM) has announced its partnership with Samsung SDI to build a joint venture plant in Michigan, USA, marking the company's second partnership with an automaker in North America. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 50 GWh. Li Auto is building an 800 V high-voltage supercharging station in China, indicating preparations for a transition to pure electric vehicles. The company plans to accumulate 3,000 supercharging stations by 2025. Tesla has reduced the price of new inventory Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in Europe by 1.5% to 7%, with savings varying across different countries. This likely comes as Tesla looks to increase its market share in the competitive European market, following similar strategies it has implemented in China. Tesla will start selling the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit for the Model S Plaid, enabling the sporty sedan to reach its advertised top speed of 200 mph. The kit will cost $20,000 and is expected to be released in limited quantities. Tesla is recalling 3,470 Model Y cars due to an issue with seat bolts that could affect the seat belt system in a collision. Unlike previous recalls that could be resolved via over-the-air software updates, this recall requires a physical fix. Our Next Energy has been selected by BHE Renewables to provide energy storage units to a solar-powered manufacturing hub in West Virginia worth $500 million. The EV battery startup will also build a factory on the site to assemble more battery storage systems. EverCharge and PassKey are collaborating to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to supplement EverCharge's EV charging stations. The BESS will be used to consolidate power during off-peak hours and deploy the energy via EV charging stations during periods of high demand. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, which is prevalent in China, is gaining ground in the US electric vehicle market as manufacturers look to embrace its cheaper cost and safety, despite holding less energy per pound than nickel-rich batteries. Our Next Energy will begin producing LFP batteries in Michigan this month, expanding next year after opening a new $1.6bn plant, and by 2027, it intends to supply enough LFP batteries for 200,000 EVs. Incoming Toyota CEO Koji Sato is calling for big changes in the way Toyota does business after the company acknowledged that Tesla has leapfrogged them in battery-powered cars, inspiring Toyota to regroup and find better solutions. Toyota is already working on a new EV platform to go into production in 2026. Greenpeace has lodged a complaint with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) accusing Toyota Australia of greenwashing, claiming the car manufacturer's claims about its environmental credentials are misleading. The complaint comes after an ACCC review found that 57% of 247 Australian companies reviewed had made "concerning" claims about their environmental credentials. Xcel Energy's plan to install approximately 730 EV fast chargers in Minnesota, which would make it the largest utility-owned charging system in the country, has sparked opposition from various stakeholders, including the gas station and EV charging industries, the Minnesota Department of Commerce, and consumers. While Xcel hopes to jump-start the slow EV market in Minnesota, critics argue that Xcel's market power as a monopoly utility would crowd out private investment, ultimately slowing EV growth. Over two-thirds of planned lithium-ion battery production in Europe is at risk of being delayed, scaled down or cancelled, due to American subsidies and slow permitting processes, warns a report by Transport & Environment. Without EU-wide financial support to scale up battery production, Europe will not be able to satisfy its battery demand in 2030 and will need to import from foreign rivals. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is vulnerable to cyberattacks, according to cybersecurity experts. There are concerns that the rush to create a comprehensive charging infrastructure could come at the expense of cybersecurity.

Carmaker Stellantis NV made big news in Indiana last week when it announced it will build a $2.5 billion electric-vehicle battery plant in Kokomo with partner Samsung SDI. The plant—which is expected to employ 1,400 people—is one step in a fledgling transition in the auto industry from vehicles with internal combustion engines to those with electric motors.  But what does that transition mean for a state like Indiana, which has five vehicle assembly plants and more than 500 auto industry suppliers. In all, more than 110,000 people are employed by the auto industry. Podcast host Mason King talks with Ananth Iyer, a professor of management at Purdue's Krannert School of Management, who is part of a group studying the potential disruption in the auto industry and how Indiana manufacturers can adapt.  Iyer sees tremendous potential for those plants and their workers, even if that means a bit of retooling and retraining to realize it. For more about the disruption EVs are causing in the auto industry, read Susan Orr's story in IBJ's Innovation Issue here.

Show #1478 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, your trusted source of EV information. It's Wednesday 25th May, and in case you missed it, Martyn is off on his holidays. I'm Blake Boland, and I've gone through every EV story today so that you don't have to! First up, let's look at our headline story for the day. Modified Nissan Ariya To Drive From North To South Pole In 2023 - British adventurer and Guinness World Record holder Chris Ramsey will become the first person in automotive history to drive Pole to Pole in an all electric vehicle in a bid to raise awareness of the climate crisis and the role that electric cars can play in reducing our carbon footprint. - This will be the first time that any vehicle has driven from the Magnetic North Pole to the South Pole, and Ramsey believes it is the ideal way to highlight just what electric vehicles are capable of – even in the most extreme climates. - After nearly four years of planning, the Pole to Pole Expedition is scheduled to start in March 2023, covering 17,000 miles across 14 countries as the team make their way from the Magnetic North to the finish line at the South Pole. - In preparation for the brutal Arctic and Antarctic conditions, Ramsey's expedition Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE will be modified and equipped by Arctic Trucks, a renowned specialist in polar vehicles. They will also provide logistical support and expertise to help plan a safe and accessible route through the most remote and hostile environments on Earth. Original Source : The Expedition – Pole to Pole EV 2022 report rates the US on EV readiness - The transportation sector accounts for approximately 30% of carbon dioxide emissions in the US alone. As the United States and the rest of the world for that matter, continue to lean into the paradigm shift of BEV transportation, more and more countries, states, and their consumers must prepare. A new 2022 report from LeasePlan USA has measured a number of data factors and scored an EV readiness index for all of the US. - The index was based upon five factors: Favorable state legislation and incentives Percentage of EVs on the road Charger to vehicle ratio Charger availability Climate suitability for EVs  Original Source : 2022 report rates the US on EV readiness: How prepared is your state? - Electrek Polestar invests in extreme fast charging battery company StoreDot -Polestar makes first financial investment in another company; becomes shareholder in Israel-based extreme fast charging pioneer StoreDot - StoreDot is pioneering the development of silicon-dominant extreme fast charging batteries for electric vehicles. The Israel-based company aims to produce batteries for EVs capable of charging up to 160 km of range in just five minutes, by 2024. - As part of the strategic deal, Polestar is collaborating with StoreDot to explore adapting and applying their technology to proof-of-concept Polestar cars. Test cases already being  explored include customising StoreDot's cell technology for Polestar cars, to enable faster charging and improved circularity. - The new funding comes as part of StoreDot's Series D investment round. Polestar is joining an impressive list of the company's global investors and partners, including Daimler, BP, VinFast, Volvo, Ola Electric, Samsung, TDK and EVE Energy. Parking lots will need to install four Level 2 chargers in order to meet the guidelines. Lots with fewer than 60 parking spaces will be exempt from the new fees. - In a report to the city council, the city staff said, “There would be an incentive to invest in EV charging to avoid the higher annual license fees.” That report estimated it would take gas station and parking lot owners about 8 years to recoup their investment in EV charging equipment. Business owners cited lack of space, lack of available electricity supply, and limited demand for EV chargers as concerns. - According to a city staff report supporting the initiative, it will cost about $135,000 for a gas station to install a DC fast charger. The report also estimates it will cost an average of $100,000 to install four Level 2 EV chargers. Once they are in compliance, the normal yearly business license fee will remain at $163 for parking lots and $263 for gas stations. Audi is also offering a special model limited to 520 for the market launch. - The Ingolstadt company will only offer the Q4 in China in the Q4 40 e-tron and Q4 50 e-tron quattro variants. The 40 e-tron is powered by an electric motor in the rear with an output of 150 kW. The 50 e-tron quattro is a four-wheel drive with a maximum output of 220 kW. The top speed is also 160 km/h, just like in this country. - However, there is a difference with the battery. In Europe, the chemical storage unit has a usable energy content of 76.6 kWh. For the Chinese market, on the other hand, it has a capacity of 79.7 kWh, which, according to Chinese standards, should allow a range of up to 605 kilometres. The battery cells with the NCM 811 chemistry come from CATL. There are also differences in the charging time from 5 to 80 per cent: the Q4 40 e-tron takes 29 minutes and the Q4 50 e-tron quattro 36 minutes for the European versions. In China, however, both variants need a full 41 minutes for the charging process. Show #1459 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Sunday 8th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. ELECTRIC VW ID BUZZ STARTS AT 65,000 EUROS "The updated list of eligible electric vehicles published by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (Bafa) reveals something that VW only wanted to tell us at the start of sales: the price of the ID Buzz." "Bafa, which is responsible for promoting e-cars, gives the first ID Buzz Pro model available for sale with a net price of 54,270 euros. Plus the statutory sales tax, the Bully successor is around 64,580 euros and thus well above the 40,000 euro limit for the higher subsidy. The purchase bonus for the ID Buzz this year is still 7,500 euros, of which 2,500 euros from the manufacturer, so that customers have to spend around 57,080 euros on balance." "For the commercial offshoot, the ID Buzz Cargo, interested parties have to budget 45,740 euros net. With a premium, they come to a net purchase price of 38,240 euros. They get the sales tax back from the tax office anyway." Footage is shown of a hand scrolling on a smartphone with the commentary, “Right now it could seem like the only people who matter are the loudest….” Who could they be thinking of? - Then, it continues— “Those who want to tear things down and then fly away on their personal spaceships when things get hard,” A video of a rocket taking lift off fills the screen. - The rest of the ad is dedicated to profiling the workers of Ford, profiling a culturally and gender diverse cohort of people working by their first name. The narrator says that Ford assembles more vehicles in the US than other car manufacturers, which means local jobs. - The narrator continues: “… we've got 182,000 people, and they're building.” and goes on further to conclude, “you might not know their names, but these people get up every day to move us all forward.” Original Source : https://thenextweb.com/news/ford-snarks-elon-musk-and-celebrates-their-workers HOT VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 GTX TO JOIN RANGE IN 2023 - Volkswagen has been tipped to spice up its ID.3 EV with a performance version that will become the brand's first all-electric hot hatchback. And now, we know when it'll arrive. - Speaking at the launch of the new ID.5 SUV in Austria, Volkswagen product line spokesperson Martin Hube noted that the ID.3 GTX's entry to the range will coincide with the ID.3's mid-life facelift. “Of course the project is progressing,” he said, adding, “[For the] ID.3 facelift…we will get some very interesting details and of course, we are convinced that customer's expectations for a bit more power, for all-wheel drive is there, and [the] customer's wish is what we have to fulfil.” - This means the ID.3 GTX won't be launched this year - we're not expecting a facelifted ID.3 until 2023 at the earliest. - likely that the ID.3 GTX will use the same twin-motor powertrain as the ID.4 GTX, producing 295bhp. In the smaller, lighter ID.3, the GTX will likely undercut the ID.4 GTX's 6.2-second 0-62mph time. · Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/id3/355043/hot-volkswagen-id3-gtx-join-range-2023 TESLA OPENS MORE SUPERCHARGERS TO OTHERS - In Norway, Tesla has opened more Superchargers for other brands. LUCID KEEPS 2022 PRODUCTION TARGETS, RAISES EV PRICES - Lucid Group Inc. shares edged higher late Thursday after the EV maker reported a narrower-than-expected first-quarter loss and said its production volume remains on track despite ongoing supply-chain problems. - Lucid lost $81 million, or 5 cents a share,  in the quarter, compared with a loss of $2.9 billion, or $89.29 a share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue reached $58 million, from $313,000, thanks to the delivery of 360 vehicles, Lucid said. - There's “strong demand” for the Lucid Air, the EV maker's luxury electric sedan, and reservations have topped 30,000, Lucid said. That translates to potential sales of $2.9 billion, it said. - Lucid kept its 2022 production volume outlook of between 12,000 vehicles and 14,000 vehicles. - The EV maker also announced price increases on most of its electric vehicle models beginning June 1. Current prices will be honored for existing reservations and any reservation made by May 31, Lucid said. - The Air will start at $87,400 for a base model and go up to $154,000 for the grand touring model, the company said. A “grand touring performance” model, announced two weeks ago, will remain at $179,000, Lucid said. - $5.4 billion of cash on hand Original Source : https://www.marketwatch.com/story/lucid-keeps-2022-production-targets-raises-ev-prices-11651783431?mod=mw_quote_news VOLVO CARS SHARE OF ELECTRIFIED CARS INCREASED TO 38.4%  - Volvo Cars reports sales of 47,150 cars in April, down 24.8 per cent compared with the same month last year.  Demand is still strong, especially for Volvo Cars' electrified vehicles and the share of Recharge models as part of total sales continues to increase. - In April Volvo Cars electrified Recharge models grew 18.7 cent compared with the same month in 2021 accounting for 38.4 per cent of total sales. The share of fully electric cars stood at 10 per cent. - European sales for April reached 19,822 cars, down 23.2 per cent compared with the same month last year. Volvo's electrified Recharge sales accounted for 51.4 per cent of the total sales in the region during the month. - Volvo Cars' US sales for the month reached 10,022 cars, down 9.2 per cent compared with April last year, with Recharge models making up 44.1 per cent of the total sales. But it's not good if people get into their cars and drive to busy urban areas instead of walking, cycling or using public transport,” the transport minister is quoted as saying. However, a final decision on the matter is still pending, the minister told broadcaster NRK. - According to the current legal situation, the tax rate for electric cars is less than 50 per cent of the tax on comparable petrol or diesel cars. At the time of purchase, there is no value-added tax of 25 per cent. In addition, tolls and parking fees are lower in many places. Subsidies for hybrid cars, on the other hand, have already expired. - . As NRK reports, there is a lack of money for investments in infrastructure projects or public transport due to declining revenues as the share of electric cars increases. A Warren, Ohio plant will begin production this August; a Spring Hill, Tennessee location is set to follow in 2023 and one in Lansing, Michigan begins in 2024. The Michigan plant alone is a $2.6 billion investment. According to GM, a fourth plant whose location has yet to be announced will be up and running in 2025. - The White House got involved in the effort this week, announcing over $3 billion to help companies like GM and others with the battery shortage. Story continues. A Biden official behind the effort noted to Yahoo Finance Monday that automakers will be a key beneficiary. - A GM spokesperson told Yahoo Finance that the company, which has close ties with the Biden White House, "is actively pursuing opportunities to localize as much of the EV and battery supply chain as possible and, as such, we are reviewing the battery-related Funding Opportunity Announcements authorized by the U.S. Department of Energy under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL)." Nevers laid out the electric automaker's policymaking wish list if the federal government wants to make transportation electrification a priority. - “The federal government can achieve ambitious electrification objectives by empowering companies to ramp production – this includes accelerating EV testing procedures, expediting and streamlining federal EV fleet requirements, and quickly providing visas for skilled workers,” - Supply chain challenges are a major constraint on Rivian's manufacturing plant in Normal, which has over 5,000 workers and is McLean County's second-largest employer. Production there is expected to hit 25,000 vehicles in 2022 – about half of what it could be if not for a shortage of chips and other materials. - Rivian's policymaking wish list for Congress includes:“Increase and accelerate” federal research efforts into new battery cell chemistry development, solid-state batteries, module and pack engineering, software design, and raw material sourcing.Reform domestic mining laws, some of which Rivian says date back to the 1870s, with an emphasis on conflict avoiding and permitting efficiency.Expand the federal consumer EV tax credit “without unnecessary limitations.”Create “exceptions” to state auto dealer franchise laws, which Rivian calls dealership “protection laws.” Rivian is fighting those laws on a state-by-state basis, calling them “one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in the U.S.” Original Source : https://www.wglt.org/local-news/2022-04-28/in-testimony-to-congress-rivians-policymaking-wish-list-leans-into-battery-supply-chain LEXUS ENGINEERING BOSS: 800-VOLT SYSTEM DONE, ELECTRIC IS THE FUTURE - In an interview with Lexus chief engineer Takashi Watanabe at a prototype drive for the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e in Barcelona, Spain, Green Car Reports learned about the automaker's thinking on electrical architectures, charging rates, and the electric future. - Watanabe said that for the automaker to realistically hit carbon neutrality, battery electric is the proper solution. - The key will be how efficiently we can manipulate and use electricity. And the challenge is “how small a battery can we get away with to achieve these goals,” Watanabe said. - When asked if Toyota and Lexus have finished work on an 800-volt electrical architecture, Wantanabe answered quickly: “Yes.” ut the first electric Lexus sold in the U.S., the 2023 RZ 450e, will not feature such an electric architecture or charge rate. The max charge rate of its 71.4-kwh battery pack will be 150 kw and it charges and runs at about 400 volts. - For Toyota and Lexus it'll be viewed upon a “case-by-case basis,” Watanabe said. The breakover point will be about 100 kwh, according to Watanabe. That's where charging rates will need to be faster and the electrical architecture will benefit from 800 volts. - When asked what is possible in terms of upgrading the RZ, or other electric cars, via over-the-air updates Watanabe said, “right now we're not trying to put any limitations or restrictions on what's possible through OTA.” The executive elaborated by saying for instance electric motor control, charging, supporting systems, or new value services can all be enhanced using OTA technology. Show #1399 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Wednesday 9th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. ELECTRIC CAR PRICES COULD GO UP EVEN AS FUEL PRICES SOAR - As US gas prices hit record highs in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it seems like electric vehicles may not be a safe haven for those looking to save money. That's because Russia plays an important part in the production of the nickel that ends up in batteries used by many electric vehicles — a metal that's rocketed up in price even faster than oil. - On February 25th, nickel was trading on the London Metal Exchange for around $24,000 a ton, according to The Wall Street Journal. By March 8th, it was trading at $80,000 (down from a peak of over $100,000), and the London Metal Exchange had suspended trading. - Russia's role in producing the battery-grade nickel used in EVs is a different story — in a Twitter thread breaking down the issue, the CEO of Benchmark Mineral Intelligence says 20 percent of that supply comes from a single Russian company. - According to Bloomberg and Reuters, nickel prices were already becoming a problem for EV manufacturers even before the invasion. - But, like energy policy, battery production and integration is a big ship for automakers to turn around — if the prices of nickel and other metals stay up, it'll be a race to switch to other tech before the shockwaves of higher prices and sanctions make their way through the supply chain. At the time, the automaker said that production of customer vehicles would begin by the end of the first quarter. - Cadillac's first-ever all-electric production model is based on GM's Ultium platform. It will launch in a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration packing a 100 kWh battery that enables a driving range of more than 300 miles. The battery powers an electric motor rated at 340 horsepower (254 kW) and 325 pound-feet (440 Nm) of torque. - The Lyriq's battery pack offers DC fast charging at up to 190 kW, enough to add 76 miles of range in about 10 minutes of charge. - Pricing starts at $58,795 for the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq Debut Edition Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/572105/cadillac-lyriq-production-start-march21-report/ E-POWER: NISSAN'S UNIQUE ELECTRIFIED POWERTRAIN - e-POWER powertrain will be introduced to the Qashqai range in late summer - The new Qashqai will be the first model in Europe to be equipped with Nissan's unique e‑POWER drive system. - Nissan developed the e-Power system, specifically tuned for European consumer needs. It offers optimum fuel efficiency without compromising driving pleasure thanks to the combination of two Nissan specialisms: advanced battery and motor technology, plus the innovative variable compression ratio internal combustion engine. - As such e-Power is an ideal technology for those who cannot or do not want to take time to recharge with a cable but face a daily urban or suburban drive, and who are ready to make the first move in their transition to a full EV in the future. - The e-POWER system is comprised of a high-output battery that is complemented by a variable compression ratio 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine generating 156hp, a power generator, inverter and 140kW electric motor - The petrol engine generates electricity, which can be transmitted via the inverter to the battery pack, the electric motor or both, according to the driving scenario. - Under deceleration and braking, the kinetic energy is recaptured and channelled back to the battery to optimise efficiency. - e-Pedal Step will brake the Qashqai at 0.2g, enough to illuminate the brake lights, and reduce the speed down to a “creeping” speed, not a complete stop. This ensures low-speed parking manoeuvres are as smooth as possible. EV BATTERIES IN 2030? - Following the announcement of a midium- to long-term strategy by Hyundai Motor and Kia to sell a total of 3.07 million electric vehicles (EV) in 2030, now all eyes are on how the country's leading carmaking group will secure the supply for production on such a large scale. - the annual demand for EV batteries is set to reach a total of 289 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by 2030. This figure is more than the annual battery production capacity of the top three domestic battery makers, LG Energy Solution (155 GWh), SK On (40 GWh) and Samsung SDI (42 GWh), combined. - Experts say that Hyundai and Kia will need to strengthen their partnerships with the three domestic battery companies and global top-tier battery makers, such as CATL in China, to secure a stable supply, and to form a local EV production cluster. - A leading example is the 10GWh battery cell plant that Hyundai Motor Group is scheduled to establish in Indonesia as a joint venture with LGES.
