Podcast: Renewable Energy and Sustainable Bank Stock Buys include articles “The Top 3 Renewable Energy Stocks Targeting 50% Upside by 2028” and “Top 10: Sustainable Banks” from sustainabilitymag.com, and more.   By Ron Robins, MBA Transcript & Links, Episode 132, June 14, 2024 Hello, Ron Robins here. So, welcome to this podcast episode 132 titled “Renewable Energy and Sustainable Bank Stock Buys.” It's presented by Investing for the Soul. Investingforthesoul.com is your site for vital global ethical and sustainable investing mentoring, news, commentary, information, and resources. Now, remember that you can find a full transcript, and links to content – including stock symbols and bonus material – on this episode's podcast page located at investingforthesoul.com/podcasts. Also, a reminder. I do not evaluate any of the stocks or funds mentioned in these podcasts, nor do I receive any compensation from anyone covered in these podcasts. Furthermore, I will reveal to you any personal investments I have in the investments mentioned herein. Additionally, quotes about individual companies are brief. Please go to this podcast's webpage for links to the actual articles for more company and stock information. Also, some companies might be covered more than once and there are also 2 article links below that time didn't allow me to review them here. ------------------------------------------------------------- The Top 3 Renewable Energy Stocks Targeting 50% Upside by 2028 As we approach the summer holiday period the number of suitable articles for this podcast usually declines. And that's what's beginning to happen now. However, there are still some great articles worth covering for you. I'm going to start with this one titled The Top 3 Renewable Energy Stocks Targeting 50% Upside by 2028. It's by Terel Miles and found on msn.com. Here's some of what Mr. Miles says about his picks. “1. First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) The company has skyrocketed more than 60% year to date, and it is just getting started. First Solar's expertise spans the entire solar value chain, from module manufacturing to project development and energy services. Moreover, artificial intelligence is set to boost demand for solar and energy storage solutions in data centers. In Q1 FY24, revenue increased 45% year-over-year (YOY) to $794 million. Earnings per share (EPS) skyrocketed 456% YOY to $2.20 per share, with gross margins up sequentially. As the company ramps up manufacturing capacity in 2024, First Solar stock should certainly be kept on your radar. 2. NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) As the world's largest producer of wind and solar energy, NextEra is at the forefront of the clean energy transition.  NextEra Energy's focus on innovation coupled with its strong financial performance, position it as a reliable investment choice… In the 2023 fiscal year…. revenue swelled 34% YOY to $28.11 billion, with EPS up 71% to $3.60 per share. They delivered extremely impressive results, amid inflation and higher interest rates. Its backlog also remains robust, as the company's subsidiaries, FPL & NextEra Energy Resources, deliver best in class services… Management has forecast 10% dividend growth through 2026. This makes NextEra Energy's stock one of the best renewable energy stocks to buy now. 3. ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ:ON) is a global leader in power management and sensing solutions, playing a critical role in the advancement of renewable energy technologies. The company's products are essential components in various renewable energy applications, from solar inverters, to electric vehicles and energy storage systems.  ON Semiconductor is having a tough year in 2024. It is still up against the slump in the EV market, as well as the broader slowdown in renewable energy projects. However, this is only temporary, and they have an exciting long term growth trajectory ahead. ON Semi's powerful silicon carbide (SiC) platform appeals to a wide variety of industries. This includes automation, industrial, healthcare, and aerospace. ON Semi is laying the foundation for accelerated growth over the next decade.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- These Alternative Energy Stocks Are Poised for Takeoff Continuing on this renewable energy theme is this second article titled These Alternative Energy Stocks Are Poised for Takeoff. It's by Michael Lebowitz. It appeared on investing.com and offers his assessments of companies engaged in many aspects of the alternative energy sector. Here are some quotes from him. “1. Battery Diversification May Be Critical Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF (NYSE:LIT) is far and away the largest (of this sector's etfs), with nearly $1.5 billion AUM. While it invests in companies with new battery technology, it also ‘invests in the full lithium cycle, from mining and refining the metal, through battery production.' Its top three holdings are lithium producers. Amplify Lithium & Battery Technology ETF (NYSE:BATT) is the second largest ETF with a mere $89 million in AUM. Like Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF, they invest in lithium producers like BHP (BHP) and Albemarle (NYSE:ALB). If you want to make investments in individual companies, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) (battery technologies), LG Chem (051910.KS) and Samsung SDI (006400.KS) are well-positioned in the industry. 2. Lithium Miners Assuming lithium remains a crucial component in electricity storage batteries, its miners should do well, especially given the recent decline in lithium prices and the related stocks. Albemarle (ALB) is the world's top lithium producer and the largest producer by market cap. It is the only lithium producer of size based in the US. Like the rest of the alternative energy sector, its stock has traded poorly recently. However, with a forward P/E of 16, there is value if its revenues continue upward at their recent pace. We caution you that lithium deposits are being actively explored. Assuming success, the lithium supply may limit the price appreciation of lithium. 3. Utility and Grid Operators Utilities will generate more power, thus increasing their revenue. However, they must invest significant capital to modernize, expand, and reduce greenhouse emissions. (Here are some companies the author comments on.) Dominion Energy (NYSE:D) in Virginia and Entergy (NYSE:ETR) in Texas are the two utility companies that may be the biggest beneficiaries of the growth of AI data centers. Both stocks have relatively low forward P/E's of approximately 14 and dividend yields of 4.25% for Dominion Energy and 5.50% for Entergy. It will be crucial to follow their margins to see how effectively they offset the expansion costs with rising revenue. Constellation Energy (CEG) and NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) are also worth tracking as they invest heavily in renewable energy infrastructure and will benefit from increased demand. We would add Duke (DUK) and Southern Company (NYSE:SO) to the list of companies to follow. 4. Technology and AI Firms Companies specializing in AI software for energy efficiency and management will find opportunities in this evolving landscape. Some of the more prominent names in this sector include IBM (NYSE:IBM), Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), and GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV). 5. Physical Plant Expansion Companies that supply utility plants with generators, transformers, circuit breakers, and switchboards, among many other parts, will undoubtedly benefit from power grid expansion. (These include.) GE Vernova, Eaton (NYSE:ETN), Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR), Emerson Electric (NYSE:EMR), and Siemens (ENR.DE). 6. Water/Cooling The average data center uses 300,000 gallons of water a day to cool its equipment. That is the equivalent of the water used by 100,000 homes. Therefore, companies that can develop cheap cooling solutions for data centers will be in high demand. (Companies so engaged include.) Vertiv Holdings (NYSE:VRT)… a leader in this segment. Its shares have risen tenfold since it went public in 2019 and now trades at a P/E of 100. It's a high-risk, high-reward stock, not for the faint of heart. 7. Infrastructure ETFs There are many other businesses set to profit from the coming infrastructure boom. Those looking for a diversified investment approach in the power grid may want to explore thematic ETFs. For example, the First Trust Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Fund (GRID) holds 103 positions. Beyond diversification and portfolio manager expertise, the fund can buy stocks in foreign markets, which many US investors do not have access to or are uncomfortable with. iShares U.S. Infrastructure ETF (IFRA) is a similar fund with a different basket of stocks and approach toward investing in the industry. The bottom line is we are confident the expansion and modernization of the power grid will be highly profitable for some companies… Diversification will prove to be essential for investors.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- MTB Named A Top Socially Responsible Dividend Stock Now many of you also like dividend-paying stocks, so I'm including this recent article on a socially responsible bank stock. It's titled MTB Named A Top Socially Responsible Dividend Stock by Just2Trade and found at j2t.com. Here are some brief quotes from the article. “M & T Bank Corp (Symbol: MTB) has been named a Top Socially Responsible Dividend Stock by Dividend Channel, signifying a stock with above-average ‘DividendRank' statistics including a strong 3.7% yield, as well as being recognized by prominent asset managers as being a socially responsible investment… According to the ETF Finder at ETF Channel, M & T Bank Corp is a member of the iShares USA ESG Select ETF (SUSA), making up 0.10% of the underlying holdings of the fund, which owns $4,322,259 worth of MTB shares. The annualized dividend paid by M & T Bank Corp is $5.4/share.” ------------------------------------------------------------- Top 10: Sustainable Banks On the subject of banks, I thought to share this article with you as I know many of you are interested in banking with a bank or banks that prioritize social responsibility, ESG, and sustainability issues. The article is titled Top 10: Sustainable Banks. It's by Charlie King and seen at sustainabilitymag.com. Now some brief quotes by Mr. King on his picks. “10. Polestar has announced that it will adopt Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS), joining other automakers like Ford, General Motors, Rivian Automotive, and Volvo Cars. This agreement will give Polestar drivers in the United States and Canada access to Tesla's Supercharger network. Volkswagen is currently in discussions with Tesla about potentially adopting Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS). Volkswagen's EV charging network unit, Electrify America, has already established over 850 charging stations in the US and Canada. Electrify America, the second-largest electric vehicle fast-charging network in the US, plans to add Tesla's connector to its charging stations, aiming to adopt Tesla's plug as the industry standard. By 2025, Electrify America aims to incorporate Tesla's connector into both existing and future chargers. Blink Charging, a provider of electric vehicle charging solutions, has announced plans to integrate the North America Charging Standard (NACS) by Tesla into its entire product range. Henry Sanderson, Author, Volt Rush: The Winners and Losers in the Race to Go Green joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy Podcast to discuss the geopolitics of the electric vehicle supply chain and his book. The conversation begins with Henry discussing why he wrote the book.I really wanted to capture the idea that the energy transition, the move to clean energy wasn't as simple as putting up some solar panels or wind turbines or swapping your just swapping car for electric. It actually involves a creation of whole new supply chains and opening people's eyes to what this means. – Henry SandersonThe electric vehicle supply chain is fragile and comprised of geopolitics. When global carmakers first started to prepare for their supply chains for electric vehicles, they were caught flat footed when they entered the world of commodity trading. In the book, Henry documents a meeting between executives at VW and a group of global cobalt traders where VW demanded a discount because they are VW. There was no discount, no cobalt sold and VW learned a hard lesson, they could no longer dictate pricing. They thought of batteries and other things as commodities that they as big car makers could just buy and the suppliers would come running to be part of the VW supply chain. – Henry SandersonWith the growth of electric vehicles, new suppliers are coming online to meet the global demand. Sony which first commercialized the lithium-ion battery in 1991 could be entering the EV battery space as they look to commercialize their VISION-S EV. In South Korea, LG Chem and SK Innovation continue to invest in producing electric vehicle batteries. Then there is China which for all practical purposes controls the global EV supply chain. It's all part of making the world safe for China's rise and knitting countries together into a sort of China, new China world order. – Henry SandersonIn 2013, President Xi of China gave a series of strategic speeches as part of China's Belt and Road Initiative that were made in locations that possess the rich minerals needed for electric vehicles. As part of those speeches, China announced strategic investments in those countries. While the investments were not specifically targeted at electric vehicles, they indeed had a strategic purpose. If China takes aggressive action towards Taiwan, the likelihood of the country becoming isolated from global trade is highly likely. Grayson and Henry discuss what the impact would be on China economically and the clean energy supply chain. It's amazing when you get into the nuts and bolts of it how integrated China is into the global economy and especially in clean energy where you got 80% of the solar supply chain, 90% of rare earth magnets, 80% of lithium-ion batteries, processing of almost all of these minerals in China. – Henry SandersonWhen it comes to the EV supply chain, China is operating a strategic advantage. In the private sector, Glencore is operating at a strategic advantage because of their cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. While Glencore has a strategic advantage, the company is not without its own controversies. The DRC is one of those countries that I think wants to benefit from the energy transition, and when you think of developing countries being victims of climate change, we need to help them, we need to step in. – Henry SandersonIn Indonesia runoff from the nickel mines are polluting the ocean and damaging the country's coral reefs. As negative environmental impacts come to light along along with human rights abuses, consumers will start to demand transparency in the supply chain. In this whole transition the opportunity for innovation is huge and it's not beyond our wits as man to solve some of these issues. You are exactly right, consumer pressure as we have seen in cobalt can actually really play a big part. – Henry SandersonWhile consumers demand transparency, Governments around the world are working on ways to diversify away from China for the EV supply chain. This change is being driven partly by the Inflation Reduction Act in the United States. In the United Kingdom, the country is looking to possibly bring the Cornwall lithium mines online one again. The global trend of diversify away from China will only continue as the electric vehicle industry continues to grow and prosper. Wrapping up the conversation, Henry shares his opinion on how he sees the global electric vehicle supply chain evolving in the coming years.Follow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Monday, October 17, 2022See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Batteries are fast becoming the core of modern energy systems and more sustainable economies, underpinning the implementation of smart grids and minigrids, while fostering the rollout of renewable energy and e-mobility, and yet, South Africa's involvement in the battery value chain remains limited. Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies chief economist Gaylor Montmasson-Clair questions whether South Africa will be an importer of batteries only, or if it will manage to become a part of the value chain. He explains that lithium-ion battery (LIB) cells consist largely of four components: a cathode that determines capacity and average voltage of a battery; the anode that comprises the negative electrode; an electrolyte solution; and a separator, which determines the safety of a battery, preventing short circuiting and overheating. In turn, there are six types of LIBs – lithium/nickel/cobalt/aluminium, lithium/manganese oxide, lithium iron phosphate and lithium/nickel/manganese/cobalt. Montmasson-Clair says South African stakeholders need to understand where niche markets lie in this regard. China currently dominates LIB production, while there are also some production facilities in the US and European markets. The market has, therefore, already been captured by a few key players, including Panasonic, CATL and LG Chem; however, South Africa can still get involved in the battery value chain, he says. He believes South Africa has the relevant skills and expertise in mineral beneficiation, with entities such as minerals specialist Mintek and with battery-related manufacturing companies, as well as an endowment of some of the minerals used in LIBS, such as manganese. Montmasson-Clair mentions that neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe have lithium, which South Africa can leverage. If South Africa gets serious about cell manufacturing, it can access copper from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or Zambia, cobalt from the DRC and Madagascar, graphite from Mozambique, Tanzania or Madagascar, nickel from Zimbabwe and Botswana and phosphate rock from Morocco, Algeria or Egypt. As it stands, South Africa only beneficiates manganese and aluminium to battery grade, while nickel and lithium beneficiation is in the pipeline. Montmasson-Clair points out that Manganese Metal Company, in Nelspruit, is the only company in the world, outside of China, that refines manganese to battery grade. The company produces about 28 000 t/y of electrolytic manganese metal for use in high-purity manganese sulphate, and in cathode. While Montmasson-Clair is confident that South Africa has the industrial capacity and know-how to manufacture LIB cells, but says there is but one pilot plant for this in the Western Cape. South African company Metair produces battery cells, but does so in Turkey and Romania, owing to it being more economically viable than producing these in South Africa. Some companies such as AutoX and MegaMillion aim to develop cell manufacturing capability in the country, but it remains to be seen if these plans will proceed. Moreover, Montmasson-Clair explains that battery manufacturing based on imported cells, since cell manufacturing is more costly to start up, is a more vibrant prospect in the country. He confirms that numerous firms have developed intellectual property and expertise in the manufacturing of specific component parts of batteries, such as casing, and in the assembly of battery packs. In some cases, companies have used this expertise to develop additional offerings, such as specialised vehicles. “Perhaps these companies can tap into cell manufacturing,” he suggests. Looking at battery recycling, Montmasson-Clair says South Africa has companies involved in marketing second-life batteries on the local market and that only a few facilities globally are in a position to effectively recycle LIBs. Montmasson-Clair explains that South Africa may not be able to compete with leading firms in terms of cell manufacturing and may als...

Show #1398 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Tuesday 8th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. FORD DEALERS WILL FINALLY BE FORCED TO LEARN ABOUT ELECTRIC VEHICLES - In the wake of the decision to split its EV and gasoline vehicle divisions, Ford has announced that its dealers will need to "opt-in" to selling EVs along with normal combustion cars, according to Automotive News. - While the company has no apparent plans to create new dealers or work outside its network of roughly 3,100 existing retail stores, Ford CEO Jim Farley said in an interview that dealers should "get ready to specialize." - Dealers that currently sell the Mustang Mach-E, E-Transit, and are anticipating inventory of the new F-150 Lightning can continue selling them for the next year and a half. - The new dealer agreement isn't finalized yet, but Ford executives have made clear they hope for a no-inventory, direct-order model, as well as non-negotiable pricing and smaller facilities for dealers. - Tesla, one of Ford's main EV competitors, works off of a direct sale model, which Farley estimates helps Tesla save almost $2,000 per vehicle. But he added that "not everything can be done remote" and that Ford still understands the importance of brick-and-mortar dealerships in customer satisfaction. Original Source : https://www.thedrive.com/news/44619/ford-dealers-will-finally-be-forced-to-learn-about-electric-vehicles NUMEROUS FORD MUSTANG MACH-E TRIMS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE ORDERED - Ford has reportedly stopped taking orders for two Mustang Mach-E trims due to excessive demand. According to Ford Authority, who site sources "familiar with the matter", the Blue Oval will not take any new orders for Premium and California Route 1 trim levels for the remained of the 2022 model year. - Mach-E buyers will only be able to get the Extended Range battery by buying the $61,995 GT. The Select trim only comes with the Standard Range pack, although you can get it in either RWD or AWD guise. - The ongoing semiconductor shortage likely played a key role in Ford's decision. The marque has already experienced production issues this year. Last month Mach-E production was temporarily halted due to supply chain issues. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/571729/mach-e-trims-not-available GM ANNOUNCES $400 MILLION EV BATTERY MATERIALS PLANT IN CANADA - General Motors and South Korea's POSCO Chemical announced plans to build a new EV battery materials plant in Quebec, Canada. - The two parties said they are working with the governments of Canada and Quebec to build a new facility that will produce cathode active material (CAM), with the investment estimated at $400 million (C$500 million). - The cathode active material produced at the new plant will go into GM's Ultium batteries, which will power electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq. CAM is a key battery material consisting of components like processed nickel, lithium and other materials making up about 40% of the cost of a battery cell. - By the end of 2025, GM plans to have capacity to build 1 million electric vehicles in North America. The company targets the majority of components by value to be sustainably sourced, processed or manufactured in North America. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/571967/gm-announces-400million-battery-materials-plant-canada/ NICKEL PRICE SURGE COULD THREATEN AUTOMAKERS' EV PLANS - The price of nickel is surging as investors take stock of the new global reality: Russia, a key supplier of the metal, is now facing extensive sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine. - In an unusual step, the London Metal Exchange suspended nickel trading on Tuesday morning after three-month contract prices more than doubled to over $100,000 per ton. - Nickel is a critical ingredient in the lithium-ion battery cells used in most electric vehicles sold in — and planned for — the U.S. market. Its abrupt price surge has analysts and investors raising hard questions about automakers' ambitious electric-vehicle programs. - When the battery cell is charged, lithium ions are driven from the cathode to the anode. As the cell is discharged, the ions move back to the cathode, releasing energy. In recent years, automakers have discovered that adding more nickel to the cathode can boost a battery's energy density, which translates into more range per pound of batteries. - Some use even more, in part to reduce or eliminate cobalt, and in part to increase density for premium applications: The cathodes in cells that Korean battery giant LG Chem supplies to Tesla are 90% nickel, for instance. - Given the relatively high cost of nickel, and the concerns about supply that were being voiced before Russia invaded Ukraine, automakers have signaled that lithium-ion batteries with high-nickel cathodes are likely to be limited to premium applications. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/08/nickel-price-surge-could-threaten-automakers-ev-plans.htm EPA PROPOSES CUTS TO SMOG, SOOT POLLUTION FROM HEAVY TRUCKS - The Biden administration is proposing stronger pollution regulations for new tractor-trailer rigs that would clean up smoky diesel engines and encourage new technologies during the next two decades. - The proposal released Monday by the Environmental Protection Agency would require the industry to cut smog-and-soot-forming nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90% per truck over current standards by 2031. The emissions can cause respiratory problems in humans. - Although truck manufacturers are working on battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, the EPA says the proposal is not a zero-emissions truck requirement. Rather, the agency says there are pollution control devices in development that can keep diesels in use and still clean the air. - Environmental groups praised the EPA's action, but many urged the administration to move quickly on the proposal and then go farther toward requiring zero-emissions trucks. - The new standards would bring widespread air quality improvements, particularly in areas already exposed to heavy truck traffic, officials say. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 26th January. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new PRODUCER GLEN MASON GENERAL MOTORS WILL BUILD A THIRD EV BATTERY FACTORY IN THE US General Motors announced a $7 billion investment in growing its electric vehicle manufacturing capabilities in Michigan, calling it “the single largest investment announcement in GM history.” The company will spend the money on four manufacturing sites, with plans to create 4,000 new jobs and retain another 1,000 in the state. The investment includes construction of a new battery cell plant in Lansing and the conversion of GM's assembly plant in Orion for production of the Chevy Silverado EV and the electric GMC Sierra. GM has said it will spend $35 billion by 2025 on electric and autonomous vehicles It's also a sign of GM's continued confidence in the growth of the EV market, despite representing only 3 percent of sales in the US over the last year. https://www.theverge.com/2022/1/25/22900729/gm-ev-battery-factory-invest-michigan-us G.M. has battery plants under construction in Ohio and Tennessee, and has retooled a plant in Detroit, where it recently started making an electric Hummer truck. It also plans to make electric vehicles at a plant in Ontario and at another in Mexico. G.M.'s new Michigan battery plant, like G.M.'s other battery plants, will be a joint venture between the automaker and LG Electric. It will be built on the site of an existing plant in Lansing, at a cost of $2.6 billion to be shared between G.M. and LG. G.M. will also invest $4 billion to enable a plant in Orion Township The company expects to add 2,350 jobs at the Orion factory and to retain 1,000 other jobs at the plant when pickup production starts. G.M. expects the Orion plant and the Detroit plant, known as Factory Zero, to eventually be able to make 600,000 electric full-size trucks a year. The company said that by the end of 2025, it planned to have a total annual manufacturing capacity of one million electric vehicles. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/25/business/general-motors-electric-vehicle-plant.html WHITE HOUSE TO HOST GM, FORD AMONG CEOS AT MEETING ON SPENDING PUSH The White House plans to host the chief executives of major U.S. companies including auto and tech sector firms on Wednesday to discuss President Joe Biden's signature $1.75 trillion Build Back Better legislation. General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Ford Motor (F.N) CEO Jim Farley Biden on Tuesday touted GM's announcement of a new $7 billion investment in Michigan, adding 4,000 jobs and boosting electric vehicle and battery manufacturing. Biden's proposal would increase the current $7,500 EV tax credit to up to $12,500 for union-made U.S. vehicles as well as creating a credit of up to $4,000 for used vehicles. The bill would also again make GM and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) eligible for tax credits after they hit the 200,000-vehicle cap on the existing $7,500 credit. https://www.reuters.com/business/white-house-host-ceos-spending-bill-push-2022-01-25/ PLANS FOR SECOND LG PLANT IN HOLLAND COMING TOGETHER, BUT NOT 'DONE DEAL' Despite dirt already moving on the site of a proposed expansion of LG Energy Solution's electric vehicle battery plant in Holland, Holland is still competing for the final blessing to be the site of $1.7 billion in investment from LG. The state of Michigan is expected to offer substantial incentives to LG Energy Solution for the project, but no official word on what those incentives will amount to is expected until a state board votes on the incentive package in late February. LG Chem's battery-making subsidiary LG Energy Solution is proposing building a second plant with the primary building, at 1 million square feet, even larger than the existing Holland plant. The total footprint of the proposed project is 1.4 million square feet. According to city documents, LG plans to hire 1,200 employees by 2025 to staff the second plant at an average wage of $50,000. Ever since LG Chem chose to build its first battery plant in Holland in 2010, city officials have known there was a chance for a second major investment in the city on land LG owns directly to the north of the current plant https://eu.hollandsentinel.com/story/business/manufacturing/2022/01/25/plans-second-lg-plant-holland-coming-together-but-not-done-deal/9208985002/ TESLA (TSLA) Q4 2021 EARNINGS PREVIEW Tesla (TSLA) is set to announce its fourth-quarter and full-year 2021 financial results tomorrow, January 26, after the markets close. As usual, a conference call and Q&A with Tesla's management is scheduled after the results. Earlier this month, Tesla confirmed that it delivered 308,600 electric vehicles during the last quarter. The Wall Street consensus for this quarter is $17.112 billion, and Estimize, the financial estimate crowdsourcing website, predicts a higher revenue of $17.416 billion. The earnings are more of a hit-or-miss since it depends on how much Tesla is spending that quarter, and with supply chain issues and cost increasing at new factories being brought online, it could be not as profitable despite record revenues. https://electrek.co/2022/01/25/tesla-tsla-q4-2021-earnings-preview-what-to-expect/ TESLA Q4 2021 EARNINGS Q&A – SAY.COM What's the current volume of 4680 cells? Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 12th December. QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Which EV makers are on Santa's naughty or nice lists – and tell me why! IAN SEAR In Santa's bad books I would put MG (SAIC), for not releasing their premium MG Marvel in the UK apparently because they want to keep MG as a budget brand in the UK. As an MG5 Owner I could also put them there for the ridiculous roof rack debacle where they advertised and sold a car with a roof rack, then told owners they cant use them before relenting and allowing a light load to be carried. I would also tick them off for their terrible entertainment and navigation system, with no app and slow interface. Finally, they recall my MG5 to fix the hardest regen braking mode not turning on the brake lights properly. The regen already is annoying in havin to turn it up to max every time you turn the car on and even then it's not a full one pedal driving. Bad MG. In Santa's good books, I'd put MG (SAIC), for creating the best low cost EVs on the market, my top spec MG5 was "only" 22k brand new after dealer discount and Im still being offered that from carwow even now 9 months later! Really kept its value well. The car has done long runs, charged at over 70kw on some chargers, done trips to Somerset, gone on 20 plus tip runs to feed my DIY habit and been generally everything my old BMW3 series was but a little bit better. I also think SAIC deserve some credit for keeping a British brand alive, trying to keep some manufacturing in the UK at Longbridge (despite not much brand loyalty from us fickle Brits) and ceasing this in 2016 they still have a major R&D facility here. Hopefully one day MG manufacturing can return to the UK. So, both a lump of Coal and a Sugar Mouse to MG. PETE GORTON Renatil Zoe: the year ends on a downer as Dacia Spring and Renault's facelifted electric ZOE qualified for only one star and zero stars respectively, performing even worse than expected. The “new” ZOE, a facelift introduced in 2020, received several battery improvements but no added safety.  On the contrary, the seat-mounted side airbag which previously protected head and thorax has been replaced by a less effective thorax-only airbag, representing a degradation in occupant protection.  MARK RICHARDS General Motors is on my naughty list.  But not for the reason you expect.  They made big claims 3 years ago about having 25 EV models by 2025.  Yet, as of right now they have 0 EVs for sale.  ZERO.  I own Bolt and already got my battery replaced…they didn't handle it well, but.  Even at the LA auto show, which was supposed to have an EV focus, GM had zero EVs and Hybrids on display.  How did they not even have a Bolt on the floor ?  Why wasn't Cadillac there with the Lyriq and GMC with the Hummer?  It's like they are not interested in EVs at all any more. Also, Mary Barra taking credit for transforming the auto industry, when in reality it was Tesla was just embarrassing.  Bad for Biden and honestly, worse for her.  So yeah, GM is at the top of my list.  I could easily add Dodge and Chrysler, since they have basically nothing EV.  But they didn't promise us a bunch of EVs, and then not deliver.  So yeah, disappointed in them, but not nearly as much as I am with GM. ROBERT GRACE for QOTW, nice Santa to Ford, Kia, Hyundai, and Lucid for their exciting new entries into the EV market. Naughty to Chevrolet for their abysmal handling of the Bolt battery failures and recall. LINDA GREGOR IN SALT LAKE I would like to put Elon Musk on my naughty list but Tesla on santa's nice list. I think the cars they're making compared to the rest of the industry are far better in terms of software and powertrain. But I would put Elon on the naughty list for carrying too much of the company on his own reputation. It will only take one serious unfortunate event, or heaven forbid the worst happens, and I really fear the Tesla would be left with no leadership or public image without him. LUKE UGDEN I would put President Biden on Santa's naughty list for saying GM had led the way electrifying the entire auto industry. No presents for the pres this year. BENJAMIN COX For me I would put Tesla on the naughty list. I have had a Model S on order in the UK since 2020 and now been informed it may not even arrive in 2022. How can a car take two years to arrive? Naughty Musky Musk. CLIPPER FROM D.C. Surely you have to put LG Chem on the naughty list for what they did with the Chevy Bolt batteries. Still no new production and a long road to replacing all the faulty ones. Maybe this even gets them a two-year ban on Santa's list. PHILIP LEE I would like to nomimate Ford for being on Santa's nice list. I haven't always been the biggest fan of companies like Ford because I feel they have been dragging their heels, and even talking EVs down until they were ready. But I think they did a wonderful job with the F-150 Lightning especially a $40k starting price. For many folk like me I don't want a truck that looks like something weird, I just want an American workhorse and I want it electric. NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Has Covid-19 changed your electric car buying decisions in the last two years? Yes, no and why? Email me a suggestion for a possible question and I might pick yours!  hello@evnewsdaily.com It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. When member BahamaTodd updated his MyChevrolet app to version 5.7.0, he clicked through to the Energy Assist page and found three GM electric vehicles listed, plus their estimated range figures on a 100% charge. One was the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt, rated for 259 miles, the second was the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV, rated for 247 miles. The third was an unexpected entry, being the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup, listed as able to go 334 miles on a full charge. - The figures for both Bolts are the official EPA estimates. The mileage figure for the Hummer is a mystery, as is why it's popped up here in the MyChevrolet app instead of the MyGMC app. The EPA hasn't certified the 2022 Hummer yet, so that's not the source. - With pre-production of the Edition 1 slated to begin at GM's Factory Zero any day now, answers shouldn't be long in coming. As we can see in the video shared by Len Devanna, Head of Digital Experience at Lucid (and re-uploaded on YouTube), about 20 Lucid Airs departed for a Lucid Rally. - Lucid will deliver 520 Dream Edition cars (in two specs - Range or Performance). Then, the less expensive Air Grand Touring, Air Touring and Air will follow. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/544466/lucid-air-dream-edition-rally/ LUCID AIR SPECS REVEALED: 118 KWH DREAM PACK, 112 KWH GRAND TOURING - The limited Dream Edition version is equipped with a 118 kWh battery pack, featuring 22 modules totaling 6,600 cylindrical cells - The Grand Touring version has about a 6 kWh smaller battery - 112 kWh - We believe that those cells are supplied by Samsung SDI, Lucid's first supplier, announced in December 2016 (see the original press release here). In 2020, the company announced that the battery cells for "standard version" cars will be supplied by LG Chem's LG Energy Solution. - One of the Lucid's key elements is the 900 V battery architecture, which allows for increased efficiency. It also makes it easier to deliver up to around 300 kW of charging power, which allows it to take just about 20 minutes to replenish 300 miles of range. - The Lucid Air is the first high-end model that is expected to be sold in quite significant volumes, starting with 20,000 in 2022. In the 2023, it should be joined by an even higher-volume, large SUV - "Gravity." By 2025, both should be sold at over 120,000 per year (including 42,000 Air and 86,000 Gravity). - EPA range: Grand Touring (19") - 516 miles (830 km), Grand Touring (21") - 469 miles (755 km) - 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) timeDream Edition Performance (19") - 3.3 seconds Dream Edition Performance (21") - 3.0 seconds Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/544455/lucid-air-118kwh-battery-112kwh/ NEW LONGER-RANGE MG ZS EV GOES ON SALE - Priced from £28,495 (incl. Chevy's Bolt has always been a solid compact electric car with great range. The 2022 model fixes the details that bothered owners and kept some from buying in the first place. There's a new front and back, more comfortable chairs and a dashboard that doesn't look like it's made from white Styrofoam. Plus there's a substantial $5,500 price cut. Tom Voelk checks out a fully optioned 2LT model and touches on the recall of the LG Chem battery pack (this was shot long before the recall was announced).
