Welcome to the final And She Did episode! Wow, what a journey. 3 years. 23 inspiring, badass young women from all over the world. We feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to run this podcast. Today's episode spotlights Rachael Yielder, a Health Psychology Ph.D. student at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Rachael's story is unique as it is extraordinary, involving her deep engagement in Kids Line, a telephone counseling service for children, undergraduate degrees in both psychology and music from universities spanning the globe, and many years working in the music industry before her current Ph.D. pursuits. Originally from Pocatello, Idaho, furthering volunteerism efforts in her home community is a cause that lies close to her heart. Alina is currently a Youth Volunteer & Philanthropy Commissioner for Serve Idaho, the Idaho Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism. Today's episode spotlights Kellie Pagador, a sophomore at Stanford University studying psychology and playing for the Stanford varsity women's soccer team. This past season, Kellie and the Stanford women's soccer team won the Pac-12, an athletic conference for Division I athletes in the Western US. While recovering from a significant knee injury throughout high school, Kellie developed a passion for the mind and body connection. At Stanford, Kellie now works as a Research Assistant in the Mind & Body Lab where she is pursuing research in this interdisciplinary and impactful field. Outside of soccer and school, Kellie loves to be outside, whether that be surfing or hiking.
Today's episode spotlights Lexi Straube, a senior at Stanford University on the pre-medical track, majoring in Human Biology: Neurobiology, Behavior, and Health with a Notation in Science Communication. After transferring to Stanford from Santa Rosa Junior College as a first-generation student, Lexi has become the president of the Stanford Premedical Association and the Chief of Laboratories at the Arbor Free Clinic, a medical organization that provides free and transitional healthcare to adults without insurance. In today's episode, Lexi covers how she has navigated the unique challenges as a first-generation college student, her experiences and growth as a leader of premedical organizations on campus, her future plans and goals within medicine, and more. Today's episode spotlights Kira Conte, a junior attending Stanford University. At Stanford, Kira is majoring in psychology and minoring in data science and education. In addition to her studies, Kira is a course creation assistant for YouCubed, an organization with the goal of transforming the latest research on math learning into accessible and practical forms. Kira has helped create and pilot an accessible data science course for high schoolers, reaching over 160,000 students so far. Today's episode spotlights Shelby Jensen, a wheelchair fencer who represented the United States at the 2020 Paralympic Games. Shelby first started playing sports as a form of rehabilitation after she had a stroke at seven years old, and from this young age, Shelby loved the competitiveness of athletics. Shelby's passion for the sport of wheelchair fencing was first ignited when she volunteered for a wheelchair sports camp when she was fifteen. Soon after starting her fencing career, Shelby began fencing all three weapons (foil, épée, and sabre) on the national circuit. In the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo, Shelby placed 7th in the Women's Epee Team Event and 8th in the Women's Foil Team Event. Today's episode spotlights Ashlyn Mundell, a sophomore at Stanford University's Online High School and a competitive track and field athlete. Ashlyn's passion for track and field began at only seven years old, and since then, she has won five indoor national championships and now holds seven youth world records. In this episode, Ashlyn shares her insights from training and competing at an elite level and how through her athletic endeavors she has built her mental strength and confidence. Along with track, Ashlyn is passionate about cryptocurrency mining and in this episode she details the crypto-mining operation she started along with her father. This episode spotlights Khanak Lashkari, the founder of the organization Project Diversify. When Khanak's exchange program was canceled in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she became passionate about finding a way for students around the world to still connect. Over the summer of 2021, Project Diversify hosted it's first event as a virtual exchange program with 90+ students from 10+ countries. Ever since she first started skiing, Olivia knew that she wanted to compete in the Olympics; fulfilling her longterm goal, Olivia Giaccio finished in an incredible 6th place in women's moguls at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Having been the first woman to have ever completed a Cork 1080 in a World Cup Competition, Olivia is at the forefront of advancing the sport of women's moguls and encourages all girls to push what is possible in whatever area they are passionate. Today's episode spotlights Lokaa Krishna, a student attending Columbia University and studying Financial Economics and History. Originally from Chennai India, Lokaa started the Lokaa foundation where she has worked intensively with several underprivileged communities in order to transform them into sustainable villages. Lokaa recognized the need to not only support the villages by ensuring that the villagers had access to homes, clean water, food, and more, but also has prioritized the creation of communities through an emphasis on human connection. The Lokaa foundation has raised over half a million dollars and has improved and changed the lives of countless children and adults from rural villages throughout India. This episode spotlights Gunnhildur Hallgrímsdóttir, a freshman at Harvard University and the youngest member ever of the Icelandic parliament at only 19 years old. As a climate activist, Gunnhildur recognized the need for a bridge between activism and politics, compelling her to join the Pirate Party to accomplish her vision. This episode spotlights Halle Hunt, a national-level competitive rugby player and founder of the Student-Athlete Speaker Series (SASS). SASS is a multimedia program dedicated to connecting student-athletes to athletic mentors. The cancelation of competitions and practices due to the beginning of the pandemic was an uncertain time for all athletes; Halle realized that other athletes were experiencing the same thing, motivating her to start this program to foster a supportive community for student-athletes. This episode spotlights Isabelle Wolpert, a dedicated pianist and passionate advocate for equality and inclusivity in the classical music industry. As a pianist herself from a young age, Isabelle recognized that well-known classical musicians are generally homogeneous, and thus set out to uplift a broader and more diverse range of classical musicians. In the spring of 2020, Isabelle co-founded Musicians for Equality, a non-profit organization with the mission of "bring[ing] justice to unheard voices, educat[ing] ourselves and each other, and spread[ing] awareness through music." Musicians for Equality raises money by hosting live stream concerts, in which musicians perform live from all over the globe; these concerts allow Musicians for Equality to donate money to various institutions that diversify and support music education, while the concerts also create a supportive community for musicians across the world to perform and learn from one another. This episode spotlights Esther Mafouta, a passionate activist from Southern California and current freshman at Columbia University. Ever since speaking to 2,000+ people at a March for Our Lives walk-out in 2018, Esther has “realized the immense power that the youth have to create change” and has spoken up whenever and wherever she has seen injustices. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, Esther co-founded CUSD Against Racism. This organization aims to create an anti-racist community by addressing four main areas within the Capistrano Unified School District: educational equity, student voices and wellbeing, curriculum, and restorative justice. In this episode, Esther also shares her other activism endeavors as the global coordinator for the anti-bullying organization Cool 2 Be Kind and within Columbia University.
