In this episode, we welcome David Wolpert, a Professor at the Santa Fe Institute renowned for his groundbreaking work across multiple disciplines—from physics and computer science to game theory and complexity. * Note: If you enjoy our podcast conversations, please join us for the Artificiality Summit on October 23-25 in Bend, Oregon for many more in person conversations like these! Learn more about the Summit at www.artificiality.world/summit.We reached out to David to explore the mathematics of meaning—a concept that's becoming crucial as we live more deeply with artificial intelligences. If machines can hold their own mathematical understanding of meaning, how does that reshape our interactions, our shared reality, and even what it means to be human?David takes us on a journey through his paper "Semantic Information, Autonomous Agency and Non-Equilibrium Statistical Physics," co-authored with Artemy Kolchinsky. While mathematically rigorous in its foundation, our conversation explores these complex ideas in accessible terms. At the core of our discussion is a novel framework for understanding meaning itself—not just as a philosophical concept, but as something that can be mathematically formalized. David explains how we can move beyond Claude Shannon's syntactic information theory (which focuses on the transmission of bits) to a deeper understanding of semantic information (what those bits actually mean to an agent).Drawing from Judea Pearl's work on causality, Schrödinger's insights on life, and stochastic thermodynamics, David presents a unified framework where meaning emerges naturally from an agent's drive to persist into the future. This approach provides a mathematical basis for understanding what makes certain information meaningful to living systems—from humans to single cells. Our conversation ventures into:How AI might help us understand meaning in ways we cannot perceive ourselvesWhat a mathematically rigorous definition of meaning could mean for AI alignmentHow contexts shape our understanding of what's meaningfulThe distinction between causal information and mere correlationWe finish by talking about David's current work on a potentially concerning horizon: how distributed AI systems interacting through smart contracts could create scenarios beyond our mathematical ability to predict—a "distributed singularity" that might emerge in as little as five years. We wrote about this work here. For anyone interested in artificial intelligence, complexity science, or the fundamental nature of meaning itself, this conversation offers rich insights from one of today's most innovative interdisciplinary thinkers. About David Wolpert:David Wolpert is a Professor at the Santa Fe Institute and one of the modern era's true polymaths. He received his PhD in physics from UC Santa Barbara but has made seminal contributions across numerous fields. His research spans machine learning (where he formulated the "No Free Lunch" theorems), statistical physics, game theory, distributed intelligence, and the foundations of inference and computation. Before joining SFI, Wolpert held positions at NASA, Stanford, and the Santa Fe Institute as a professor. His work consistently bridges disciplinary boundaries to address fundamental questions about complex systems, computation, and the nature of intelligence. Thanks again to Jonathan Coulton for our music.

Complexity scientist David Wolpert joins me to consider the idea of meaning at its most fundamental level. Historically, information theory has helped us quantify information (e.g., bits), but says nothing about the ways information might be useful, significant, relevant, or meaningful. Recently, however, Wolpert and colleagues have filled in what's missing from that account, offering a theory of "semantic" or "meaningful" information by showing how some information actually has causal power to influence the well-being and viability of systems in context. Here we explore this idea and a number of its implications for what's "meaningful" across the complexity stack, from a whirlpool to a bacterium all the way up to us. 0:00 Introduction 0:46 Meaning and Semantic Information 2:17 Background Context: Information Theory, Utility Functions, and Statistical Thermodynamics 14:03 Meaning FOR a System: What Information Helps One Stay Far from Equilibrium 21:54 Meaning: Mutual Information with Causal Power for Viability 27:57 Meaning and Meaurement up the Complexity Stack 33:42 Indirect Meaning, Chains of Significance, and Intelligence 37:20 A Semantic Information Theory of Individuality? 42:03 Relative vs. Absolute Semantic Information Metrics 49:52 The Complexification of Meaningful Information through Evolutionary Transitions 52:30 Layered Meaning through Evolution

"I believe in the Jedi Order. Fear leads to suffering, suffering leads to hate, anger. Anger leads to hate." - John Wolpert (referencing Yoda) -------------------------------------------------------------------   In a recent episode of "Joseph Jaffe is not Famous," I had the pleasure of conversing with John Wolpert, a pioneer in technological breakthroughs and the author of "The Two But Rule: Turn Negative Thinking Into Positive Solutions." Our dialogue traversed the landscape of innovation, psychological safety, and the transformative power of negativity when constructively harnessed.  Reflections and Takeaways  Cultivating a Constructive Culture: By fostering an environment where every negative is met with a possible positive, we build resilience and creativity within our teams.  Recognizing the Role of Fear: Fear can be a catalyst for caution and precision, provided it's balanced with an equal measure of bravery and action.  Appreciating the Full Spectrum of Emotion: A culture that acknowledges challenges and emotions without sugarcoating them is one that's primed for genuine progress.  Harnessing AI for Innovation: The intelligent application of AI can augment human creativity and lead to solutions that may have otherwise remained obscured.  Valuing Critical Voices: Those who challenge ideas are not just naysayers; they are invaluable members of the team who can drive us to consider new angles and alternatives. -------------------------------------------------------------------   Here are the show notes: Toxic positivity and its opposite, nourishing negativity. (0:03) AI, automation, and human control. (9:56) AI ownership and governance. (15:15) Using "but" to challenge and find solutions. (20:34) Workplace culture, psychological safety, and fearlessness. And now for something completely different!  Last October, The Santa Fe Institute held its third InterPlanetary Festival at SITE Santa Fe, celebrating the immensely long time horizon, deep scientific and philosophical questions, psychological challenges, and engineering problems involved in humankind's Great Work to extend its understanding and presence into outer space. For our third edition, we turned our attention to visionary projects living generations will likely not live to see completed — interstellar travel, off-world cities, radical new ways of understanding spacetime — as an invitation to engage in science as not merely interesting but deeply fun. For our first panel, we decided to inquire: What is time, really? How has science fiction changed  the way we track and measure, speak about, and live in time? And how do physics and complex systems science pose and answer these most fundamental questions?Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I'm your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we'll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. In this week's episode, we share the Complex Conceptions of Time panel from InterPlanetary Festival 2022, moderated by SFI President David Krakauer and featuring an all-star trinity of panelists: science journalist James Gleick, sci-fi author and SFI Miller Scholar Ted Chiang, and physicist and SFI Professor David Wolpert. In this hour, we play with and dissect some favorite metaphors for time, unroll the history of time's mathematization, review time travel in science fiction, and examine the arguments between free will and determinism.Be sure to check out our extensive show notes with links to all our references at complexity.simplecast.com — as well as the extensive, interactive web-based “Voyager Golden Record Liner Notes” with links to not only all of the panels from IPFest 2022 but also copious additional resources, including contributor bios, peer-reviewed publications, science fiction and nonfiction science writing, and more…If you value our research and communication efforts, please subscribe, rate and review us at Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and consider making a donation — or finding other ways to engage with us — at santafe.edu/engage.If you'd like some HD virtual backgrounds of the SFI campus to use on video calls and a chance to win a signed copy of one of our books from the SFI Press, help us improve our science communication by completing a survey about our various scicomm channels. We are excited to kick off a new season of This is My Silver Lining with Executive Coach, Cindy Wolpert.  Cindy is the founder of Results-Based Coaching (RBC) Associates.  She works with business leaders across all levels of seniority to maximize their leadership potential, manage successful transitions, and realize their professional goals. She is a creative and thoughtful innovator who is known for bringing calm to the chaos.  Cindy tells us about starting her entrepreneurial journey during the lockdown in March 2020 - moving beyond the fear, building her reputation as an independent coach - there is so much power in being really honest with yourself and pushing yourself into uncomfortable positions.  Prior to founding RBC Associates, Cindy held various product development, operational and HR roles in the Fortune 100.  She has first hand experience with the challenges of managing through business and budget cycles, navigating office politics, and harnessing the opportunities that her clients face.  This gives her a real edge and makes her an invaluable asset to their advancement.  Cindy found her passion for coaching and leadership development as a client herself.  In one of those, “you can make money doing this?” moments, Cindy realized that nurturing the personal and professional development of other leaders would give her the greatest career satisfaction.  She threw herself into the deep end of the pool and learned all that she could about coaching, created opportunities to coach at work, and got certified. Prior to leaving corporate America, she led an internal executive coaching practice at Fidelity Investments where she served as the lead executive coach for executives and had responsibility for the certification and development of over 175 internal coaches globally. As many of you enter the annual review cycle, consider career changes or pound the pavement for a new job, grab a pen and a notebook and prepare to be inspired.  We know you'll come away from this conversation with practical tools and perspectives to consider the career adventures that lie ahead.  Episode Links and Resources:Cindy WolpertThe Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and BusinessSupport this podcast by subscribing and reviewing!Music is considered “royalty-free” and discovered on Audio Blocks.Technical Podcast Support by: Jon Keur at Wayfare Recording Co.© 2022 Silver Linings Media LLC. Communication is a physical process. It's common sense that sending and receiving intelligible messages takes work…but how much work? The question of the relationship between energy, information, and matter is one of the deepest known to science. There appear to be limits to the rate at which communication between two systems can happen…but the search for a fundamental relationship between speed, error, and energy (among other things) promises insights far deeper than merely whether we can keep making faster internet devices. “I can't recall what got me into screenwriting, other than just loving movies at a very young age,” said screenwriter Matt Wolpert, who recalls watching Singing in the Rain and Funny Girl with his mom. “I don't remember wanting to do anything else.” This led Matt to NYU Film School, where he met Ben Nedivi in a Film Production Class. “I grew up in LA,” added Ben. “My father was a set decorator and he worked on Quantum Leap. Our garage was filled with props from that show,” he joked. “Every episode a different era, location, so it was a place my sister and I would get lost in—make believe.” Ben summarized both of their childhood stories: “There's no way I'm not doing this.” As they started to write together, eventually found themselves in staff for shows like Entourage, Fargo, The Umbrella Academy, and most recently, For All Mankind where they're listed as Creators along with Ronald D. U.S. News named being a lawyer as the 2nd most stressful job in 2022. But it wasn't until recently that far reaching reports identified major wellbeing deficits, such as problematic drinking, workaholism, and mental health concerns. The reports led to a major call to action for the industry to address lawyer wellbeing. It also led to the creation of the Institute for Well-Being in Law (IWIL), a non-profit dedicated to the betterment of the legal profession through holistic well-being.  Podcast guest Robin Wolpert is an appellate practitioner, business litigator, and white-collar criminal defense attorney at Sapientia Law Group in Minneapolis. She is Treasurer of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, Treasurer of the Institute for Well Being in Law, Member of the ABA House of Delegates, Member of the ABA Standing Committee on Professionalism, and past President of the Minnesota State Bar Association.  In this episode, Robin shares her entry into the industry and what's changed in her 20 years of practice. Robin describes some unique challenges lawyers face, both in law school and once they are practicing. She explains a series of reports that emerged, which was a call to action for things to change in the legal industry. Mellody started at Ariel Investments as a college intern while at Princeton, and is now Co-CEO. She discusses why she has spent 31 years at Ariel, and how her relationship with Ariel founder John Rogers shaped her college choice, her career, and her outlook on business. She also shares how her husband, George Lucas, has helped shape her understanding of entertainment and film, from spending time at Skywalker Ranch, becoming Yoda’s stepmom, and witnessing Lucas’ creative process. When Hobson was in her 30s, she joined the Starbucks Board. Then, she was approached by Howard Schultz, who told Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Gethin that Hobson was a prime candidate to be on the board of Dreamworks. Hobson jumped on the chance, joining a board which she describes as “Moguls ‘R Us.” She discusses her experience on the board for 10+ years, beginning as a “pipsqueak” in the room to later becoming Chairman and acting as chief negotiator during the Comcast acquisition. According to Hobson, the key to success for modern media companies lies in the refusal to stay in the past. She cites examples of Comcast, Disney, and Netflix as companies who evolve with advancement of technology and changing the demand of consumers. Hobson also predicts that streaming services will soon be re-bundled and streamlined, as unbundling is more costly and poses more technological challenges to consumers than traditional cable. Later, Wolpert and Hobson delve into the issues of race, gender, and mental health in America today. Hobson is the only Black woman who is the chairwoman of a Fortune 500 Company, which signals that there is still much progress to be made. She addresses the shortcomings of the corporate world when it comes to diversity in both race and gender, and how diversity initiatives oftentimes mask and perpetuate underrepresentation ----------- This episode is presented by: Stubbs, Alderton & Markiles. Great discussion with Richard Wolpert on the convergence of tech and media. Some punchlines: * Movie theaters will only be for tent-pole movies * Live concerts are not going away * The metaverse will happen * Social media is toxic and needs to be fixed
