In this episode, have you ever felt that there is too much injustice in the world and you just can't respond to it all? Have you ever found yourself making a compromise with your ethics just to make it through the day? I think we all have. My guest today has written a book looking at these tradeoffs. Hopefully it will help us all to be able to make moral choices and address the guilt we feel at not being able to help everyone. David Thesmar is the Franco Modigliani Professor of Financial Economics and professor of finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management. In 2007, he was named “France's Best Young Economist” by Le Monde. With Augustin Landier, he writes a regular column for the French daily newspaper Les Echos. He just co-authored a book, ‘The Price of our Values: the economic limits of a moral life'. Come find me on Facebook and YouTube

I'm Mark Ritter, and this is Credit Union Conversations. Today, I'm joined by Austin Wentzlaff from Nook to discuss how credit unions can evolve beyond competitive rates and traditional relationships by using digital tools to deepen member engagement. We'll explore how Nook takes a fresh approach—focusing on lifestyle topics like travel, health, and relationships—to build trust and naturally drive financial product adoption. Plus, we'll dive into the role of venture capital in fintech, the challenges early-stage companies face, and what it really takes to bring innovation to the credit union space.IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Introduction(01:50) Austin shares his professional journey(07:36) Austin explains Nook's purpose and how it operates(13:39) How is the industry responding to the premise of Nook's purpose(17:44) What is in Nook's future and Austin explains the roots of FinTech Accelerator(25:16) Discussion of venture capital KEY TAKEAWAYS: The credit union industry has thrived on competitive rates and strong member connections, but digital tools now deepen engagement. By focusing on lifestyle topics over direct financial discussions, this approach builds trust and drives natural product adoption.Successful early-stage fintechs and QSOs must be innovative, not just marginally improving existing solutions. They should be in a pilot phase with limited clients and employees, and they must be genuinely committed to the credit union industry rather than just exploring it as a potential revenue stream. While venture capital provides diversification and reduces risk for credit unions, it can also create a disconnect. Historically, credit unions invested in QSOs they were already working with, ensuring strategic alignment. The shift toward aggregated investment funds may weaken direct relationships between credit unions and fintechs, potentially impacting strategic collaboration.RESOURCE LINKSMark Ritter - WebsiteMark Ritter - LinkedInAustin Wentzlaff - Nook - LinkedInNook - WebsiteAustin's EmailBIOGRAPHY: Austin Wentzlaff is the Co-Founder & CEO of Nook and brings 10+ years of credit union industry, CUSO, and Fintech startup leadership experience.Prior to starting Nook, Austin was the Founder and CEO of Fintech Accelerator, a consulting firm focused on bringing new technologies to the credit union industry, whose client list included CUSOs, RenoFi and Illuma, among other successful startups. Prior to founding Fintech Accelerator, he was the Chief Revenue Officer overseeing sales and marketing efforts at OnApproach, a CUSO acquired by Trellance in 2019. He has spent the entirety of his career in the credit union industry, where he has worked exclusively for Fintech startups from the earliest stages of growth through exit. Austin has extensive experience working with Fintech startups as an early employee (joining OnApproach, Illuma, and RenoFi all with less than 10 employees) and a key contributor, instrumental in their early success. Today we are joined by the Professor of Finance at the University of Utah, Matt Ringgenberg to discuss everything related to anomaly returns. Matt's research – mainly centred on the actions of short sellers – has been published in all the major journals including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Financial Studies. We begin with the definition of an asset pricing anomaly before learning about the anomalies that Matt's research is primarily focused on. Then, we unpack anomaly returns and how they relate to anomaly signal information, what causes anomalies, the risk versus mispricing debate, and the barriers to accessing financial data that allow anomalies to persist. We also weigh Matt's research against its anomaly-denying counterparts, assess anomaly behaviour before and after publicly available signal information, explore models that help to predict future anomalies, and learn more about the economic mechanism underlying asset pricing anomalies. To end, we dive into Matt's paper, ‘The Loan Fee Anomaly' and explore the relationship between cross-sectional predictors and market returns, and Matt explains why long-term happiness is the only true marker of success.    Key Points From This Episode:   (0:05:07) Matt Ringgenberg defines an asset pricing anomaly and describes the anomalies his research is focused on.  (0:06:27) When anomaly returns appear relative to the release of anomaly signal information. Life well-being is achieved through living a satisfying life full of meaning and purpose. Money plays a role in various domains of life, including financial, social, cultural, and personal. Envy and other emotions related to social status can impact happiness. Knowing your comparison group and focusing on your own achievements can lead to greater contentment. Self-control is essential when saving for the future, and it's important not to dip into capital except when necessary. Finding a balance between saving and spending is crucial, as some people become so focused on saving that they forget to enjoy their wealth. Involving the next generation in financial planning is important for creating a multi-generational wealth strategy. Welcome to this month's episode of the P4A Let's Talk Rare podcast by Partners4Acess. Today, Georgie and Owen are joined by their colleagues Aurelija Luko, the CFO, and Darren Callanan, the Global Digital Lead at Partners4Access. Join them as they discuss the recent job cuts in the pharma and biotech industry and the reasons behind them. Aurelia explains that redundancies are not limited to the pharma industry and are influenced by factors like mergers, expiring patents, and macroeconomic instability. Darren adds that high drug development costs and pricing pressures also contribute to layoffs. However, he suggests that companies can use digital tools to enhance efficiency and innovation to address industry challenges. They also discuss a digital launch platform and a social listening tool created by Partners4Access.  Aurelia highlights that companies are looking to increase shareholder value and reduce costs. Darren adds that thanks to the high cost of drug development and downward pressure on prices, companies are forced to narrow their focus and compete in the same space, leading to layoffs.   The conversation then shifts to discuss the digital launch platform created by Partners for Access. Darren explains that the platform streamlines the access and utilization of launch materials, ensuring that affiliates have access to the most up-to-date and compliant versions. This helps overcome the challenge of inconsistent distribution and saves time for the teams.  Darren also mentions another tool called RarePulse, a social listening platform. This tool collects and analyzes data from social media and other sources to provide insights on key opinion leaders, unmet patient needs, and other relevant topics. He emphasizes that social media listening allows for a broader understanding of patient experiences and can help shape primary research and launch strategies. Few people are better equipped to unravel the riddle of the Indian economy than the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram Rajan. As the co-author (with Rohit Lamba) of the just published Breaking the Mold: India's Untraveled Path to Prosperity, Rajan lays out a strategy for Indian economic development that might allow the country to both maintain its much storied democracy and provide jobs and prosperity for its almost 1.5 billion people. While Rajan didn't use the term “third way” in our conversation, there is a sense that he's trying to navigate India between the Scylla of conventional western free market neo-liberalism and the Charybdis of the protectionism pursued by populists like Trump, Erdogen and perhaps the current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Certainly no great fan of Modi's bureaucratic centralization, Rajan's path to prosperity lies in decentralizing economic power to its federal states. It's in the enlightened economic policies of states like Kerala, Rajan argues, that India can break the mold and become not just a prosperous society but also a model for other developing 21st century economies. Raghuram Rajan is the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago business school. He was the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between September 2013 and September 2016. Between 2003 and 2006, Dr. Rajan was the Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund. Dr. Rajan's research interests are in banking, corporate finance, and economic development. The books he has written include Breaking the Mold: Reimagining India's Economic Future with Rohit Lamba, The Third Pillar: How the State and Markets hold the Community Behind 2019 which was a finalist for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year prize and Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy, for which he was awarded the Financial Times prize for Business Book of the Year in 2010. Dr. Rajan is a member of the Group of Thirty. He was the President of the American Finance Association in 2011 and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In January 2003, the American Finance Association awarded Dr. Rajan the inaugural Fischer Black Prize for the best finance researcher under the age of 40. The other awards he has received include the Infosys prize for the Economic Sciences in 2012, the Deutsche Bank Prize for Financial Economics in 2013, Euromoney Central Banker Governor of the Year 2014, and Banker Magazine (FT Group) Central Bank Governor of the Year 2016. Dr. Rajan is the Chairman of the Per Jacobsson Foundation, the senior economic advisor to BDT Capital, and a managing director at Andersen Tax.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In this conversation, Bob French interviews his father, Ken French, a professor of finance, about key concepts in economics and investing. They discuss the concept of marginal cost and marginal revenue, which helps individuals make decisions based on the balance between costs and benefits. They also explore risk aversion and how it affects investment decisions, as well as the winner's curse, which refers to the tendency to overestimate the value of winning bids or investments. Overall, the conversation provides valuable insights into economic thinking and decision-making. In this conversation, Bob and Ken French discuss the challenges of drawing inferences about the future based on past performance in the financial markets. They highlight the winner's curse and the noise in securities returns as factors that make it difficult to predict which asset class or active manager will outperform in the future. They also discuss the problem of overconfidence and the importance of accurate market prices. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the benefits of stock buybacks and the option value of investments. Listen now to learn more!    Kenneth French's Bio: Kenneth R. French is the Roth Family Distinguished Professor of Finance at the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College. French is an expert on the behavior of security prices and investment strategies. He and his frequent co-author Eugene F. Fama have written many notable papers, including “The Cross-Section of Expected Stock Returns”, “Common Risk Factors in the Returns on Stocks and Bonds”, and “A Five-Factor Asset Pricing Model.” French is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, an Advisory Editor of the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Banking and Finance, and the Financial Review, a member of the Editorial Board of the Critical Finance Review, a former Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance and the Review of Financial Studies, and a former President of the American Finance Association. Professor French is also a Fellow of the American Finance Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Chair of the Valpo Surf Project's Global Board of Directors, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Cato Institute, Grassroot Soccer, and the International Rescue Committee. Professor French is a consultant to Dimensional Fund Advisors and a member of the firm's board of directors. Before joining Dartmouth, Professor French was on the faculty of MIT's Sloan School of Management, the Yale School of Management, and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Professor French received his PhD in finance from the University of Rochester in 1983. He also earned an MS and an MBA from the University of Rochester and a BS from Lehigh University. Takeaways Understanding the concept of marginal cost and marginal revenue can help individuals make informed decisions based on costs and benefits. Risk aversion is driven by the decreasing marginal utility of wealth, where the value of each additional dollar decreases as wealth increases. The winner's curse refers to the tendency to overestimate the value of winning bids or investments, and it can be observed in various contexts, such as oil lease auctions and hiring decisions. Considering these concepts can enhance economic thinking and decision-making in investing and other areas of life. Drawing inferences about the future based on past performance is challenging due to the winner's curse and the noise in securities returns. Overconfidence is a common problem in investing, and people often overestimate their ability to pick winning investments or active managers. Accurate market prices are important for allocating resources efficiently and signaling the value of different activities. Stock buybacks can be beneficial for companies and society, as they can signal undervaluation and allow companies to allocate resources more effectively. The option value of investments should be considered, as companies may choose to buy back stock when they don't have better investment opportunities.
