Parliamentarians return to Ottawa next week for what will be the first showdown between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in the House of Commons. It'll be the official kick-off for the fall political season. Who will come out on top? This week on The Numbers, after delving into the latest poll numbers we play a little game of “buy or sell” — buying the parties and leaders we think will end the season higher in the polls than where they are today, and selling those we think could end up in a worse spot.Plus, we also chat about an upcoming provincial byelection in New Brunswick and break down the latest goings-on in Quebec, where Premier François Legault's government is up against the ropes as a new poll shows the CAQ at rock bottom.Looking for even more of The Numbers? On the first Sunday Show since the passing of the irrepressible Neil de Beer, host Chris Steyn honours his fearless spirit of resistance by renaming it the NdB Sunday Show. In his tribute, commentator Renaldo Gouws describes De Beer's life “as a testament to courage, conviction, and an unyielding love for our nation”. He goes on to tackle some of issues that would have equally enraged Neil, including “Special Leave” Police Minister Senzo Mchunu's unleashing an “extraordinary amount of force and also abusing his power in order to do that” on a podcaster who had bruised his ego with a satiric sketch. To better enlighten voters, Gouws, a former Parliamentarian, reveals all the perks MPs get in addition to their salaries. He also warns what drastic lifestyle changes are in store for politicians if they are hit with personal sanctions. “…it's going to be a very tough time. And I think that would be the thing, ironically, that would actually put South Africa on the correct path again because if you hit these cadres where they feel it the most, which is in their pockets, then that is when we will see a change in South Africa.” Lastly, he calls on Parliament's Ethics Committee to act against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema following the Equality Court finding that he and his party are guilty of hate speech and incitement to violence.

In the latest Sunday Show, Chris Steyn hosts Renaldo Gouws, former Parliamentarian, podcaster and industrial psychologist. He speaks about the litany of woes besetting the once mighty African National Congress (ANC) that is now “bleeding” support: the breaking of ranks by Senzo Mchunu, the Police Minister on special leave, and long-time Jacob Zuma ally Malusi Gigaba. He warns that the raging factional battles in the party could force out President Cyril Ramaphosa if a secret ballot is allowed in the upcoming Vote of No Confidence. Gouws questions the “attempted hijacking” narrative around the attack on Police Portfolio Committee Chair Ian Cameron, as well as the political relevance of Deputy Defence Minister Bantu Holomisa who threw an on-air tantrum last week. Gouws further dissects the “double standards” at the heart of the saga of Kleinfontein, the Whites-only settlement threatened with demolition by the City of Tshwane. He also comments on his own Press Ombudsman victory against News24.

fWotD Episode 3026: Battle of Preston (1648) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 17 August 2025, is Battle of Preston (1648).The battle of Preston was fought on 17 August 1648 during the Second English Civil War. A Parliamentarian army commanded by Lieutenant General Oliver Cromwell attacked a considerably larger force of Royalists under James Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton, near the Lancashire town of Preston; the Royalists were defeated with heavy losses. The First English Civil War between Royalist supporters of Charles I and an alliance of Parliamentarian and Scottish forces ended in 1646 with Charles defeated and imprisoned. He continued to negotiate with several factions among his opponents and this sparked the Second English Civil War in 1648. It began with a series of mutinies and Royalist uprisings in England and Wales. Meanwhile, a political struggle in Scotland led to a faction which supported Charles, known as the Engagers, gaining power. The Scots raised an army which crossed into England at Carlisle on 8 July to support the uprisings. Combining with English Royalists they marched south along the west coast road some 24,000 strong. Much smaller Parliamentarian forces fell back in front of them. Cromwell was suppressing uprisings in south Wales with 5,000 men during May and June; he captured the last Royalist stronghold on 11 July and was marching east within a week.Cromwell concentrated 9,000 men in north Yorkshire and crossed the Pennines to fall on the flank of the much larger Royalist army at Preston. Not contemplating that Cromwell would act so recklessly, Hamilton was caught with his army on the march and with large detachments too far away to intervene. A blocking force of about 3,000 English Royalist infantry, many ill-armed and inadequately trained, proved no match for the Parliamentarians, most of whom were well-trained veterans from the New Model Army. After a ferocious hour-long fight these Royalists were outflanked on both sides, which caused them to break. The largest part of the Royalist army, predominately Scottish, was marching south immediately to the rear of this fighting. Most had crossed a bridge over the Ribble, a major river just south of Preston; those still to the north of it were swept away by the Parliamentarian cavalry and either killed or taken prisoner. A second round of prolonged infantry hand-to-hand fighting took place for control of the bridge; the Parliamentarians were again victorious, fighting their way across as night fell. Most of the survivors, nearly all Scottish, were to the south of Preston. Although still at least as strong as the whole Parliamentarian army they fled towards Wigan in a night march. They were hotly pursued and on 19 August were caught and defeated again at the battle of Winwick. Most of the surviving Scots surrendered: their infantry either at Winwick or nearby Warrington, their cavalry on 24 August at Uttoxeter. In the aftermath of the war Charles was beheaded on 30 January 1649 and England became a republic on 19 May.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:50 UTC on Sunday, 17 August 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Battle of Preston (1648) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.

In the latest Sunday Show on BizNews, Chris Steyn hosts Renaldo Gouws, former Parliamentarian, industrial psychologist and Podcaster to talk about another tumultuous week in South African politics. He examines the motives of the African National Congress (ANC) with the National Dialogue and its move to control the Parliamentary Inquiry into the allegations made by the whistleblowing KZN General “Lucky” Mkhwanazi. “…Ramaphosa has never been the President of South Africa. Cyril Ramaphosa has always tried to be the President of the ANC and trying to save the ANC.” Meanwhile, people have also become “gatvol” of the Government of National Unity (GNU). “So the boogeyman that has been created by political parties, especially the DA, is that we need to stay in the GNU because we're keeping the real enemies out. What real enemies, though, if you've already passed the BELA Act, the NHI Act, the Expropriation Act? What more is there that the opposition would have stood against if you didn't pass what you've passed?” Gouws delves deeply into the racist tweet storm that has hit Sports, Arts and Culture Minister and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie. As for the visit to Iran by South Africa's top SANDF general and the misaligned spin from DIRCO, the Minister and the President, he says “…this just reinforces the belief that Cyril Ramaphosa is the weakest president that we've had in this country”.

Markwayne Mullin about where the BBB is headed, then asks the more profound question of who is actually calling the shots right now in the U.S. Senate. The Senate Parliamentarian is many things. A nonpartisan referee, an appointed official, and at some times one of the most powerful people in our government. This week, Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough found several provisions in the currently debated budget appropriations bill violated something called the "Byrd Rule." Today we explore this complicated and often-unseen role with Sarah Binder, professor at George Washington University, and a person who spent over thirty years in the office, former Senate Parliamentarian Alan Frumin. Talk Back to MeThe first six months of 2025 have displayed a roller coaster of events, many of which presented as catastrophes, or great victories depending on political affiliation. At the same time, the Gun Culture has witnessed the end of an era, where names that once led companies and held the attention of millions slip away in disgrace. Not all kingdoms are built to last. Whether it's Military action in Iran, or Riots in LA, or Parliamentarians getting in the way of a long awaited curbing of the NFA, it's easy to look at what we're up against and throw up one's hands in lament. But that is not the path. Did we expect it to be so easy as an election? Did we expect that, with every step forward we would face less and less opposition? This isn't a problem that can be solved in the mind alone.
