There's an upcoming election in Australia, and housing will be a big issue. Show host Gene Tunny chats with Fusion Party candidate Owen Miller about Fusion's sweeping housing policy proposals. Topics include eliminating negative gearing, taxing capital gains on owner-occupied homes, and increasing public housing. They also discuss ideas like charter cities, high-speed rail, and a government-run real estate platform. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for Gene, please email him at contact@economicsexplored.com.About Owen MillerOwen Miller grew up in Sydney and has long been interested in science fiction, ultimately leading to the study of mechatronics (robotics & control systems) and computer science at the University of Sydney. After working in different software roles in Sydney and even dealing Blackjack for some months, Owen moved to Seattle to work on the recommender systems at Amazon. Owen later moved to New York and was involved in smaller startups, especially in hospitality. Although the start-ups didn't take off, this rite of passage involved less shielding from the real world and helped clarify the roles of the market and the state in the provision of essential aspects of life, such as software and social cooperation. In 2020, Owen started the Non-Human Party; a vision for an opt-in online nationality that would optimise the existence of robots and animals, in addition to humans.Upon moving to Melbourne in 2022, Owen became the Registered Officer of Fusion, with the hope of enabling Australia to reach its full potential as a wealthy, sustainable and harmonious paradise; a beacon for the rest of the world. He currently serves as Fusion's Convenor.Owen was Fusion's candidate for the 2023 Aston federal by-election.In 2024, he ran as a candidate for local council in Merri-bek (for the Bulleke-Bek ward). He will again be running as a federal candidate in 2025, this time in Wills. In 2024, Spotify classified Owen as belonging to the top 0.05% of Kylie Minogue fans.Source: https://www.fusionparty.org.au/owen_millerTimestampsIntroduction (0:00)Relationship Between Fusion Party and Pirate Party (3:07)Fusion Party's Housing Policy Goals (4:04)Comparisons with Other Countries and Tax Policy (6:19)Immigration and Housing Policy (9:09)Owner-Occupier Capital Gains Tax and Land Tax (12:53)Renter's Rights and Social Housing (17:16)Supply-Side Housing Policies (27:49)Liberté Account and Open Source Real Estate Listings (38:24)Final Thoughts and Wrap-Up (51:02)TakeawaysTax reform is central to Fusion's housing strategy — They propose reducing capital gains tax discounts and phasing in land tax for all properties, including owner-occupied homes.Fusion supports a major investment in social housing — Advocating a jump from 3.2% to 10% of housing stock as public housing.Tenant rights need an upgrade — Fusion argues for banning no-fault evictions and establishing minimum standards like clean air and energy efficiency.Livret A accounts could revolutionize infrastructure funding — A French-style citizen savings bond to fund high-speed rail and public housing projects.Urban sprawl isn't the answer — Fusion favors infill development and transport-driven decentralization over expanding city fringes.Links relevant to the conversationFusion's housing policy:https://www.fusionparty.org.au/housing_as_a_homeLumo Coffee promotion10% of Lumo Coffee's Seriously Healthy Organic Coffee.Website: https://www.lumocoffee.com/10EXPLOREDPromo code: 10EXPLORED Full transcripts are available a few days after the episode is first published at www.economicsexplored.com.

What's up Bros? Its safe to say that summer is really starting to heat up. Carl is gassed up and ready for the weekend. He has a lady friend coming to the pirate party. Craig is headed up to the Hamptons for the weekend with a lot of unfinished business with Kyle. Lexi isn't at the house for the weekend giving Jesse some solo time. Amanda shares where she's at mentally, and it's great to hear that she's in a good place at the moment. She also shares some insight into her upcoming swimsuit line. Kyle attempts to have the conversation with Craig after Jesse brings it up at the dinner table, but Craig wants to wait a day and have the convo on HIS terms. The whole things is so overblown at this point they just need to quit being babies and hash it out. Paige shares some frustrations she's been having with Craig, further pointing to the countless cracks in their foundation. Craig and Paige sit down to talk in a boat, and she makes it apparent that she is questioning Craig's support for her and her success. We obviously know how this story ends, but the more and more we get from it, the more obvious it becomes that this was not only inevitable... but probably could've happened a long time ago. (47:34)Foreign aid, shipping, and taxation. (53:35)TakeawaysThe housing crisis in Australia is exacerbated by high immigration levels and stringent building restrictions, which affect affordability.Policy debates are intensifying around whether to restrict immigration to ease housing demand or to relax zoning restrictions on development to boost supply. The concept of "upzoning," similar to Auckland's approach, could be a viable solution to create more housing in existing urban areas.Proponents of high immigration levels often overlook the infrastructural and social costs associated with a rapidly increasing population through high immigration rates. The discussion of housing involves not only economic metrics but also the quality of life and housing accessibility for all population segments.Links relevant to the conversationLeith Van Onselen on immigration and housing: https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2024/04/albo-lies-his-way-out-of-rental-crisis/Previous episode with Natalie Rayment: https://queenslandeconomywatch.com/2021/04/16/missing-middle-housing-podcast-chat-with-natalie-rayment-of-wolter-consulting/John's conversation with Cameron Murray on housing: https://www.mixcloud.com/Johnorg/roving-spotlight-28-november-reviewing-a-pirate-look-at-the-housing-market-with-cameron-murray/Freightened documentary about the cost of shipping: https://thoughtmaybe.com/freightened/Lumo Coffee promotionLumo Coffee Discount: Visit Lumo Coffee (lumocoffee.com) and use code EXPLORED20 for a 20% discount until April 30, 2024.Thanks to Obsidian Productions for mixing the episode and to the show's sponsor, Gene's consultancy business www.adepteconomics.com.au. Full transcripts are available a few days after the episode is first published at www.economicsexplored.com.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 188 featuring PARRIS. Let's give him a warm welcome to the series. It's always exciting to feature a DJ we haven't before. He has an amazing mixing style and I just can't get enough of it. I'm sure you guys will enjoy digging into this one. What's your DJ name? - PARRIS, its my last name How long have you been DJing? - About 15 years. Although I took a 3 year break and came back to it in July of 2022. Why did you get into it? - I was working at a bar and I had a friend that was a DJ who told me he thought I had good taste in music and that I should give it a shot. So after he would DJ at the bar, we would after party at his house and I learned on Serato using control vinyl and Tech 12's. I instantly fell in love with it and bought myself a DJ controller. It was a Vestax VCI-300 if I remember right. With an FX processor. At the same time I was doing security for Music Lives Here shows and got to play my first shows with them. What events have you played? - I've played many of the Music Lives Here events around the state as well as most of the bars in downtown Bozeman. Pirate Party always stands out, but lots of other festivals. As of late, I've been playing at the Zebra in downtown Bozeman. In Fact, my next live gig is there, Dec 16th, with Red Velvet and Forrest. Where do you live? - I live in a very small town on the Rocky Mountain front called Choteau. I'm only here until next spring and then I'll probably move to Helena. Its very quiet in Choteau. I don't have a lot of friends here, so I've turned to artistry and creativity with all my free time. I work with music and wood. Where are you from originally? - It's hard to say. I grew up moving around a lot. My dad was in the Navy, so I spent a lot of time in San Diego. He was a recruiter in Missoula for 4 years though, and when he retired, we moved outside of Great Falls, MT. I was 16 at the time. So I finished school in Montana before going into the military myself. What inspires you to DJ? - Music is magical. It can alter your mood.pDistract you from things. If you make music, you can be creative with it. I'm not great at producing music yet, but I'm a great DJ. So finding, ordering, manipulating, and blending songs together allows me to unleash the greatness within. I like to think we all have at least one thing we're good at, mine is DJing. That might sound a little vain or egotistical, but I have a lot of practice at something I'm passionate about, and I feel the time I put into a mix really shines through. What inspires you about electronic music culture? - This will probably date me a bit, but the idea of PLUR was always very appealing to me. Especially the Unity. I feel I just fit in with the people that enjoy EDM culture. I think we all search for a sense of belonging and that's where I found it. What Genres are in your mix? - This mix is House, Bass House, and Tech House. But I mix all kinds of music. My favorite mix on my Soundcloud is called, Decompression Session. It's mostly late 90's trip hop with a little pop sprinkled in. Its super chill. A few words about your mix? - I put hours into this mix. It's about as flawless as I can make something sound. I hope you enjoy it. My favorite song in the mix is at 28:37, Diplo & Walker & Royce Feat. Channel Tres - Diamond Therapy. I like the feel of Hip Hop with a House beat. I have a few songs in the mix that are like that. And my favorite transition starts at 40:42. I just really like the way the phrasing of the two songs lined up perfectly in the mix. Today's political interviewees come from the Pirate Party and The Greens, and join me with Sasha Kehoe from Today Radio. Sven Clement and Djuna Bernard were both the youngest people elected to parliament at different times. Sven possibly has the best website domain name in Luxembourg: sven.lu, and is highly active across all social media, including Tictok. In 2009, Sven co-founded the Pirate Party in Luxembourg and became its first President. Amongst other things he is a successful entrepreneur with the launch of taxx.lu with Jerry Weyer. Elected to the Chamber in 2018, Sven is highly committed to citizen participation, transparency in the Chamber and digitization. Djuna Bernard is co-president of the Green Party and has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since December 2018. Djuna replaced Sam Tanson, when she became Housing and Culture Minister, making her the youngest deputy in the Chamber at 26 years old. As we talk through the way in which the election takes place, plus some news of the week with Sasha Kehoe, both Djuna and Sven give us their opinion with conviction, pointing to the 'disagreeing agreeably' method of discussion.

Roughly 12 years Pandaura set his sights on DJing. Originally from Helena MT, now residing in Missoula. He's been playing tons of parties over the years and has developed a style and sound that I personally admire and tune into whenever I get the chance. He's put together a fantastic Deep House mix for us and a little Q and A. -BK Love- Why did you get into it? The first reason I ever mixed two songs together was because I was really getting into/discovering house music, specifically Kaskade's first couple albums, and I wanted to listen to my favorite songs without the intro and outro, so I pirated virtual DJ and started mixing with a mouse and keyboard and recording them for myself.  I knew like two people who even knew what house music was at the time, one of whom was my brother Beav, I showed him some of my mini mixes and he said “you know there's parties out in the forest where people DJ and dance to this stuff right?” Rest is history. What events have you played? My first show ever was at the Broadway Bar with like 6 people there (who were all involved with the show).  I had what you could call a residency with my music crew's monthly show at the Badlander called Foxxy Friday, it went for 5 or 6 years in a row.  I've played at Burning Man both years I've gone (2012, 2022).  I played at Love Your Mother Earth out at Ryan Creek Meadows before that got shut down.  Many Shines, Pirate Party, Fairy Tale, Neon Forest (I think that's what it was called? The first one was my first festival DJ performance), Forest Creatures the past two years.  DAT was a really memorable/special event, I did not play all of them but some.  Opened for Absolutely once, I'll House You, Travis's Monday local DJ thing that used to be at the Palace, Queer Rodeo (part of pride in Helena).  Various shows in Bozeman at the Zebra and Colonel Blacks (can't remember what the events were called).  Funk Yer Burn at the Quarry.  Several Disco Blood Baths.  I'm sure I'm missing some haha. What inspires you? Friends and family, hardship, friendship, love, creativity, music, art, and advocacy. Please tell us a little bit about this mix? This was a one-shot, unplanned, impromptu mix.  BK asked if I wanted to do a mix for the series and that night I just hit record messing around and it turned out great to me.  There's imperfections for sure, but I was also taking way more risks than if I sat down and curated/planned a mix.  To me it feels way more alive than my planned mixes. -Pandaura- For More Pandaura Check out https://soundcloud.com/pandaura There's currently nothing on it because I haven't recorded/shared a mix in a long long time, hopefully this mix is the start of a change.

In 1999, following the death of the party's founder Screaming Lord Sutch—(who had led the party through its previous incarnations, such as "National Teenage Party" and "Go To Blazes Party")—OMRLP members voted for their new leader, choosing jointly a cat called Cat-Mandu and his owner Alan "Howling Laud" Hope. Although Cat-Mandu died in 2002 and now serves as one of the party's "spiritual leaders", "Howling Laud" proudly continues as the UK's longest-serving party leader. On this episode: After Berliners overwhelming rejected the city senate's plan for luxury flats on Tempelhofer Feld, politicians have already begun talking up another controversial top-down master plan - to bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games. When were Berliners ever asked if they liked the idea? The BER airport starting date has been set back until the end of 2016. The disastrous project is now tainted by allegations of corruption, with one official accused of abusing the tendering process. Now the Pirate Party in the Senate is demanding a referendum on whether the airport should ever be finished with state funds at all. A prisoner who escaped from the sturdy Moabit prison has been recaptured, thanks to a Berlin hotel receptionist who recognised his poorly bearded face from a police fax announcement. Would-be escapees are recommended not to check into hotels near the prison they have escaped from.
