Eye Care in 2030: What's Coming, What to Ignore, and How to Prepare Now

In this episode, Dr. Steve Vargo tackles something that's quietly weighing on a lot of healthcare professionals right now: uncertainty about the future. What's actually coming? What's hype? And what does any of it mean for independent practices like yours? Drawing on recent research across multiple healthcare forecasting sources — including data from the AMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Pew Research, and McKinsey — Steve breaks down the ten most significant trends shaping healthcare through the end of the decade, with a specific lens on what they mean for independent optometry. Some of what's coming is disruptive. Some of it is genuinely good news — especially for the parts of practice most of us actually care about. And some of it won't affect your specialty at all. But here's the through line: the practices that will thrive in the next five years aren't necessarily the biggest or the most technologically advanced. They're the ones that use the right tools to clear the administrative noise — and protect the human relationships that no algorithm can replace. If you've been feeling uncertain about where eye care is headed, this episode won't add to that anxiety. It's designed to replace it with clarity.   To register for Vision Forward, visit idoc.net to reserve your spot.    Follow our Podcast on All Available Platforms Follow our Podcast on Instagram Follow IDOC on Facebook Follow IDOC on LinkedIn Watch our Podcast Video on YouTube

Why do so many optometric practices hit a ceiling in their practice? We know it's not because the owner isn't working hard enough, so what is it? It's because the business was never designed to scale in the first place. Eugene Shatsman joins me back on the show to talk about the ceiling practice owners inevitably hit in their practice—and a system he's created to help owners break through it. In our conversation, we discuss the systems and frameworks behind building a more intentional, scalable practice, including the five operational pillars Eugene believes every successful practice must manage well. We also talk about the hidden KPIs that quietly hurt profitability, how to create stronger accountability within your team, and why elevating the patient experience from transactional to consultative can dramatically improve both growth and practice value.   Resources: Eyecare BOSS (Pre-order Eugene's book, The EyeCare Boss on their website!) EXCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITY: Be the first to get the book, "The Eyecare BOSS," by Eugene Shatsman & Jamie Rosin → https://eyecareboss.com/  When practice owners are asked about their biggest challenge, the answer is usually the same: People. Because when your team is aligned, accountable, and operating at a high level, growth feels possible. New ideas get implemented. Patients have a better experience. The business moves forward. But when the team is burned out, inconsistent, or resistant to change, even small improvements can feel difficult to execute. That's exactly why People is one of the foundational pillars of the Eyecare BOSS (Business Optimization & Scalability System). In order to scale and optimize a practice, you need the right people in the right seats, operating with clear expectations, shared rules of engagement, and accountability across the organization. The People System is designed to help practices build that structure intentionally — creating systems that consistently develop stronger teams, stronger culture, and better execution over time. Because when culture depends entirely on one or two people holding everything together, growth eventually stalls. This episode is the first in a five-part Eyecare BOSS series, where Jamie Rosin and Eugene break down the systems behind building a more scalable, optimized practice.

Bayer's $2.4B Perfuse Deal Shakes Up Eye Care | Pharma and Biotech Daily

Pharma and BioTech Daily

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2026 5:45

Good morning from Pharma Daily: the podcast that brings you the most important developments in the pharmaceutical and biotech world. The industry is buzzing with significant shifts driven by scientific advancements, strategic acquisitions, and regulatory changes. A noteworthy transaction is Bayer's $2.4 billion acquisition of Perfuse, aimed at gaining control over an eye disease implant that has shown promising results in phase 2 trials. This acquisition speaks to Bayer's commitment to expanding its ophthalmology portfolio, a field with substantial unmet medical needs due to aging populations. The move highlights how companies are investing heavily in areas expected to see growing patient demand. In the realm of artificial intelligence, Recursion Pharmaceuticals is undergoing a strategic transformation under new leadership. After a decade of AI-driven research without yielding tangible products, the focus is shifting towards translating AI's potential into viable therapeutic solutions. This reflects a broader industry trend where the promise of AI must be balanced with pragmatic strategies to ensure commercial success. Novo Nordisk is making strides with its GLP-1/amylin combo treatment Cagrisema, maintaining its launch plans despite technical setbacks with a single-chamber device design. This demonstrates the company's adaptability in overcoming hurdles to bring innovative diabetes treatments to market, crucial in the competitive landscape of diabetes care. Additionally, Novo Nordisk's obesity treatment Wegovy has posted impressive quarterly revenues of $355 million thanks to strategic pricing and timely market entry ahead of competitors like Eli Lilly in the emerging oral obesity therapy segment. Such success suggests potential redefinition of market dynamics in obesity treatments. GlaxoSmithKline has entered into a $1 billion agreement with China's Siranbio for an oligonucleotide therapy targeting abdominal fat reduction. This partnership highlights GSK's strategic focus on cardiometabolic diseases through nucleic acid-based therapies, which offer high specificity and efficacy. Such therapeutics are becoming increasingly attractive for investment due to their potential impact on diverse health conditions. CellCentric's successful Series D funding round, raising $220 million for its myeloma drug, positions it well for pursuing clinical milestones independently. This signifies a shift towards self-reliant biotech models, illustrating how smaller companies are increasingly able to navigate the drug development landscape without traditional pharma partnerships. Gilead's acquisition of Arcellx for $7.8 billion and its subsequent workforce consolidation reflect ongoing realignments within the CAR-T therapy space. These consolidations indicate strategic prioritization within large biopharmaceutical companies to streamline operations while focusing on promising therapeutic areas like CAR-T cells. In corporate restructuring news, Gilead Sciences announced workforce reductions following its acquisition of Arcellx. While aimed at optimizing operations post-acquisition, it raises concerns about job security amid increasing merger activities within the biotech sector. Avalo's promising phase 2 results in skin disease treatment have renewed interest despite challenges from placebo comparisons. This emphasizes the competitive dynamics and high stakes in dermatological drug development, where even modest efficacy signals can significantly drive market activity. BioCryst's decision to halt its diabetic macular edema program to concentrate on rare diseases exemplifies a strategic pivot towards niche markets with potentially higher returns and less competition. This aligns with broader industry trends emphasizing precision medicine and targeted therapies. Eli Lilly's substantial $4.5 billion investment into its Indiana manufacturing complex underscores a commiSupport the show

Rather than fearing disruption, she encourages optometrists to embrace innovation and actively shape how these technologies integrate into patient care. This episode is ultimately about leadership, ownership, and stepping into the future of optometry with intention.Key Highlights & Timestamps[00:01:20] – Dr. Edris' mission: breaking generational barriers in optometry[00:02:50] – The biggest pain point: optometrists not having a seat at the table[00:04:00] – Why optometry must shift beyond “glasses & contacts”[00:06:00] – The compensation challenge and its impact on patient care[00:09:00] – Early career struggles and developing a growth mindset[00:11:30] – Why most clinics fail with new technology implementation[00:12:30] – Aligning your team and doctors for successful adoption[00:14:00] – Using data and performance metrics to drive growth[00:16:00] – Systems and protocols > equipment[00:17:40] – The future of optometry: AI, kiosks, and disruption[00:20:30] – Why innovation should be embraced, not feared[00:22:00] – Personal advice: navigating difficult seasons in life[00:23:10] – Hard work vs. luck—and the reality of failure behind successKey TakeawaysOptometrists must actively engage with industry to shape the future of the professionThe perception of optometry needs to evolve toward full-scope medical careProper compensation is essential to delivering high-quality patient careSuccessful implementation of new services requires systems, training, and team alignmentData and transparency can drive accountability and growth within practicesAI and automation are coming—optometry must adapt, not resistTrue success is built on resilience, failure, and consistent effort—not luck Memorable Quotes“We weren't sitting at the table… and by the time decisions were made, it was too late.”“Our profession has been shaped as glasses and contacts—and we need to change that.”“If you always do right by the patient, you will make a difference.”“You can buy equipment—but if you don't implement it properly, it will just collect dust.”“Systems and protocols are more important than the equipment itself.”“We can't be afraid of change—we have to be part of it.”“You will make it through the darkness into the light.”“People call it luck—but they don't see the failures behind the success.”Connect with Dr. Faten EdrisInstagram: @blinkingowleyecareLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/faten-edris-o-d-5934b43/

In this episode of Power Hour, Eugene Shatsman sits down with Jamie Rosin to talk about a systematic approach to practice growth.  The Eyecare BOSS System (Business, Optimization and Scalability System) is a structured operating framework built specifically for independent optometry practices that want to grow without chaos. Jamie and Eugene take you through a strategic walkthrough of the system, revealing how your practice can eliminate bottlenecks, prioritize the highest-impact growth levers, develop leaders instead of managing personalities, improve patient satisfaction in measurable ways, and build a data-driven culture that predicts results before problems show up.

Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton hosted Ask the Dr this morning from Salem Media, opening the show with a discussion on the power of proper nutrition and the importance of consuming adequate protein in the morning to support metabolism, muscle health, energy, and brain function. During a caller discussion, Dr. Lange emphasized the importance of xanthophyll carotenoids, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin, which play a critical role in protecting the macula and supporting long-term visual performance. The doctors also discussed cholesterol and statin medications, and how these drugs may interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients, including lutein and zeaxanthin. Dr. Lange recommends Fortifeye Focus for anyone who spends extended time on computers or digital devices, as these carotenoids help protect the macula from blue-light damage. Both doctors highlighted what Dr. Lange described as a missing nutrient in today’s Standard American Diet—black currant seed oil. Unlike most oils, black currant seed oil naturally contains omega-6 (GLA), omega-3 (ALA), and omega-9 fatty acids, making it a uniquely balanced essential fat source. Dr. Lange explained that GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) is particularly lacking in modern diets and plays a key role in controlling inflammation, supporting dry eye, skin health, joint comfort, and overall cellular function. Fortifeye Black Currant Seed Oil / GLA was discussed as an effective way to restore this critical fatty acid balance. The show also addressed nutrition strategies for constipation, discussed eye floaters and warning signs to be aware of, and offered practical guidance for improving overall systemic and ocular health. Dr. Lange took time to express gratitude to several mentors from Louisiana who helped shape his career, including Dr. Richard K. Lange (his father), Dr. Charlie Glazer of St. Charles Vision, and Dr. Steve Brint of Eye Surgery Center of Louisiana. The program concluded with an in-depth segment on dry eye disease, focusing on two advanced technologies designed for more resistant cases—Lumenis OptiLight and OptiLift, available exclusively at the Lange Eye Institute. Dr. Summerton also discussed the benefits of appropriate light exposure for memory, energy, and concentration, while emphasizing the importance of limiting digital screen time at night to support restorative sleep. #AskTheDr #AskTheDoctor #DrMichaelLange #DrSusanSummerton #NutritionMatters #EyeHealth #MacularHealth #BlueLightProtection #Carotenoids #Lutein #Zeaxanthin #DryEyeRelief #GLA #BlackCurrantSeedOil #AntiInflammatory #FunctionalNutrition #IntegrativeEyeCare #LumenisOptiLight #LumenisOptiLift #LangeEyeInstitutSupport the show: https://www.drmichaellange.com/category/ask-the-doctor/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

414 Following Your Own Star   There comes a time in our lives where we need to stop and take stock of what we want to do next and our next steps in getting there. Perhaps it's more than just one thing, perhaps you're just floating through life trying to figure out what to do next, or perhaps you think this goal is too lofty despite all your hard work. Which is why it is so important to take all you know about others and yourself and apply it to whatever comes next. In today's episode Sarah Elkins and Professor KD Frick discuss the importance of that specific personal growth, as well as the importance of believing in others and yourself even when you aren't sure where your own star is leading you, and especially to greet the world with open arms.   Highlights Finding the right words for where you are in your life right now.  Leading with compassion and empathy. Position yourself to be able to understand.  Don't immediately dismiss someone, you never know where their combined ideas may lead. Everyone has their own North Star they follow.   Quotes "Empathy leads to approachability." "Look as long as I'm here and unless you tell me otherwise, I'm planning on reading names. Because it's the last connection students have with us."    Dear Listeners it is now your turn, What did you hear in this conversation that struck you as something that resonated? Maybe it was about not knowing what you want to do next, maybe it was I do know what I want to do next but I'm not being consistent enough to make it happen. I am so curious to hear your thoughts, please share them either in the comments or wherever you see this shared or send me an email.  And, as always, thank you for listening.    About KD KD Frick was originally trained as a health economist and began a career at Johns Hopkins as a faculty member at the Bloomberg School of Public Health; after a bit more than sixteen years in that role, with responsibilities like associate department chair and faculty senate president, a move was made to the Carey Business School as vice dean for education. The eight and one-half years spent in that role were a time of growth and expansion of opportunity. With colleagues encouraging a return to research, challenging decisions around COVID, a focus on ranking academic programs that was not of interest, and a lack of visible opportunities for advancement in administration, a decision was made to return to just a faculty role. The result has been great fulfillment, a change in teaching, and a focus on leading by teaching others to lead artisnally toward aspirational narratives for themselves and those they are developing. There is still room for work on the economics of eye care where Professor Frick has the opportunity to apply the leading with values approach that is taught in the classroom. Be sure to check out Professor Frick's LinkedIn, thoughts on tHERSday newsletter, as well as Business and Economics of Eye Care and Health!   About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Episode Description In this year-end episode, Chris Wolfe, OD takes a step back from protocols, products, and positioning statements to examine a more fundamental question in clinical care: when does belief help us act, and when does belief get ahead of the data? Throughout the year, we've emphasized that belief during the comprehensive exam is what drives action. If doctors and teams do not truly believe something matters, it does not get prioritized. But belief has a failure mode. When belief outpaces evidence, especially in pediatric care, it can distort expectations, decision-making, and policy. Using the FDA's decision on low-dose atropine as a case study, this episode explores how belief forms, how it spreads, and where it may diverge from what the publicly available data actually show. This is not an argument against myopia management or atropine therapy. It is an attempt to slow the conversation down and examine effect size, study design, endpoints, and uncertainty with clarity and humility. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why myopia management itself is not the controversy, but certainty often is How belief influences behavior in the comprehensive exam, for better and for worse What the FDA actually said in its Complete Response Letter on SYD-101 How professional statements and press releases can amplify belief beyond available data What the STAR trial poster does and does not show, including effect size and subgroup uncertainty Why modest effect sizes behave differently in real-world clinical practice How to think about dose, endpoints, and population selection without oversimplifying Why belief should motivate action, but evidence should calibrate expectations Key Sources Referenced in This Episode FDA and Manufacturer Statements Sydnexis Complete Response Letter Press Release Sydnexis Receives Complete Response Letter from FDA for SYD-101 to Slow Pediatric Myopia Progression https://www.sydnexis.com/news/sydnexis-receives-complete-response-letter-from-fda-for-syd-101 Sydnexis Phase III STAR Trial Topline Data Press Release Sydnexis Announces Topline Pivotal Data from Phase 3 STAR Trial https://www.sydnexis.com/news/sydnexis-announces-topline-pivotal-data-from-phase-3-star-trial UK Approval Announcement (Based on STAR Data) Sydnexis Announces UK Approval of Ryjunea by Partner Santen https://www.sydnexis.com/news/sydnexis-announces-uk-approval-of-ryjunea Professional Organization Statements AAOMC Public Statement AAOMC Calls for Access to Proven Myopia Therapies as Low-Dose Atropine Gains Global Approvals https://aaomc.org AAPOS Commentary on Nonapproval of SYD-101 Available via LinkedIn and Healio OSN Clinical Commentary and Analysis Kyle Klute, OD – Optometry Simplified My Alternative Take on Atropine, Fast Progressors, and Effect Size (NNT Analysis) https://optometrysimplified.com/posts/optometry-simplified-weekly-my-alternative-take-on-atropine-fast-progressors-in-glaucoma-lab-test-ordering-and-more Strongly recommended for a detailed discussion of effect size and Number Needed to Treat. It is about learning to sit in uncertainty without abandoning action. It challenges listeners to examine where belief helps patient care and where belief may unintentionally replace careful analysis. If you manage myopia, counsel parents, interpret clinical trials, or influence policy, this episode is designed to help you think more clearly, not more loudly. In this episode, Laurie Barkman is joined by Dr. Brianna Rhue, optometrist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Dr Contact Lens. Brianna shares her journey from a private practice owner to a tech maven, driven by the need to solve a critical "leaky bucket" problem: doctors losing contact lens sales to online retailers. She discusses the "entrepreneurial gene", the power of a "chip on your shoulder", and the lessons learned in building a full-blown tech platform from scratch.
