And thus, the Program Review Database was born! Here are some of the things we cover in this episode:1. How you can access the Program Review Database2. #42: Perspectives on the Preceptor Situation

IN THIS EPISODEIn today's episode I'm talking about preceptors, and a lot of what goes into finding preceptors. I think this is a really important topic for several reasons. Obviously, preceptors are a necessity for dietetic internships, whether they are organized by students or programs. We cannot have internships without preceptors. There also has been a pretty big increase in the number of distance internship programs, which are most likely to require students to find and arrange their own preceptors. Finally, finding preceptors is a big task to add to an already pretty big application and internship experience. Ideally, resources and guidance are available for students who choose that route. Here are some of the perspectives covered in this episode:1. Preceptors/Facilities have their clients'/patients' best interests in mind2. DI Directors/Programs ideally provide support to both applicants/interns and preceptors3. Students/Interns can get information about what to expect in their preceptor searchYOUR ACTION STEPIf you are pre-application, do your program research. Really look into your options and run the pros and cons lists of both distance and face-to-face programs. Whatever your choice, dive deep into what they offer. Ask those questions if you do have to find preceptors: find out how the programs supports both students looking for preceptors, and preceptors themselves. Also, please let me know about your preceptor finding experience. Literally any details you have to share, I want to hear. That is the best way for me understand the situation students are going through, and potentially how to address those gaps to make them easier to navigate. With this Insider insight, your application is sure to stand out!----------SHOW NOTESEpisode 42 Show Notes Accredited Programs Directory ----------Be a guest on the Application Insider Podcast! However, there are still some misconceptions about what it actually means, who will be impacted by the change, and how it's going to be implemented.Right now, we're less than 3 years away from this change taking place. Right now, dietetics students are in a mixed basket of whether or not they need to get a graduate degree. Will all dietetics have to get a graduate degree after January 1, 2024?2. Does everyone who will take the exam in 2024 have to get a graduate degree?3. How much time do you have left in your DPD program? When might you apply to internships? How close will you be to the 2024 requirement? New to Dietetics? Start Here!In the 8 years I've been working with dietetics students, I've crossed paths with so many who were very overwhelmed with the DI application process and how it fit into their own dietetics education pathway. In fact, that sentiment is much more common than a student who feels like they know exactly what to expect and how to move smoothly through the process. This, I think, is pretty unfortunate. For a process that is required, sometimes the amount of preparation and information that is provided just isn't enough. I want each dietetics student to feel confident about moving forward to their next step. You deserve that much! You deserve to know what's coming up and how to get through that phase and what you'll be doing after that. That's why I created the Start Here page at Application Insider. It's at applicationinsider.co/starthere. I got feedback from students about what information they wish they'd had when they were just learning about applying to dietetic internships. They let me know things that came up that would have been help to know a lot earlier in the process. I put it all together on one pageThe Start Here page is a go-to for any dietetics student who wants to go through their education pathway smoothly and with confidence. It covers information about DICAS and D&D Digital, the DI application process. That's not all though! It also has details about other program types, things to think about like finances and the upcoming 2024 Master's degree requirement. This is information that students need! And I've got it here for you.Check it out for yourself at applicationinsider.co/starthere or follow the link in the show notes. Look through it. Use it as you apply to dietetic internships! Share it with someone you know who can use this information. If you've already gone through the whole DI application process, pass it on especially if it has info you wish you'd had early on.More Things to ShareAs long as you're checking things out, be sure to grab a few other things.Follow the link in the show notes to download the free Ultimate DICAS Checklist. That application isn't small, so I created the checklist to help you keep track of every section. No matter when you get started on your application, the checklist will be useful for knowing which sections you're done with, which are in process, and which will need your attention next. Episode 26: Personal Statement Word Count TipsIN THIS EPISODEWith the Spring 2021 Match deadline now less than 2 weeks away, I'm sharing some tips you can use as you're whittling down your personal statement to keep it within the 1000 word limit. I have personally used all of these techniques as I have worked with students to make their personal statements stand out. This doesn't mean that every personal statement needs every one of these tips, but it does mean that if you're worried about word count, some of these are bound to be helpful. Here are the tips that can help you cut down on some words covered in this Q&A:1. Narrow down which experiences you share2. Cut out details that aren't absolutely necessary for the story3. Look for sentences you can shorten and combine4. Be sure to follow up general sentences with specific sentences5. Check for short words or phrases you might not need after allYOUR ACTION STEPCheck what your personal statement word count is right now If you are already at 1000 words or less, kudos! Double check that you've got full responses to all the questions and get ready to submit. If you're over 1000, take note of how many words you need to remove. Then read it again with each of these categories in mind. Read it for details to see if you might have some extra you can take out. Then read it slowly, 2-3 sentences at a time, checking for options to shorten and combine. Finally, use that ctrl + F function to pick out words or phrases that you might be able to revise.----------SHOW NOTESEpisode 26 Show Notes: applicationinsider.co/podcast-source/ep26Submit your questions to be answered on the Application Insider Podcast: https://applicationinsider.co/podcast Find more dietetics tips and guidance at applicationinsider.coFollow along on Instagram @applicationinsiderSchedule your FREE 20-minute Brainstorm Call with Nicole: https://applicationinsider.co/brainstorm-callWatch the video of What Directors See in DICAS: https://youtu.be/Y_9W-amAws0---------- Get the Personal Statement Self-Guided Course: https://applicationinsider.co/application-services-all/personal-statement-courseDownload the Personal Statement Sample Pack: https://applicationinsider.co/application-services-all/personal-statement-sample-packSchedule a 40-Minute Ask Me Anything Call with Nicole: https://applicationinsider.co/application-services-all/ask-me-anything

[replay]IN THIS EPISODEThe Application deadlines for the Fall and Spring Match are always set ahead of time: Sept 25 for Fall Match, and February 15 for Spring Match. When you're working on your application, that deadline can feel pretty daunting as it gets closer. My suggestion is that you actually set your OWN application deadline, and make it even earlier. In this episode, we're talking about why setting your own deadline makes sense, even thought that means shortening even by just a day or two, the amount of time you have to work on your application. Here are some important things we'll discuss:1. Making sure you know what else is going on around the same time as the application deadline.2. What absolutely must be complete for you to be able to hit submit – and what you actually don't need to wait for.3. How to meet your own deadline and rest easy that your DICAS application is on its way.YOUR ACTION STEPSet a reminder in your phone or write into your calendar that your own application deadline is now at least 2 days ahead! Plan to get everything completed by then. Know that when that day comes around, you will be ready to hit submit – or still have a bit of a buffer to make up time if you really do need it.__________Schedule your Ask Me Anything call: https://applicationinsider.co/application-services-all/ask-me-anythingApplication Match Calendars: https://www.eatrightpro.org/acend/students-and-advancing-education/dietetic-internship-match-students __________Episode 25 Show Notes: applicationinsider.co/podcast-source/ep25Find more dietetics tips and guidance at applicationinsider.coFollow along on Instagram @applicationinsider Watch the video: https://youtu.be/jdisW_FsYlg

Episode 21: 5 MORE DICAS Mistakes to AvoidIN THIS EPISODEToday's topic is a companion to episode 18. I'm talking about 5 MORE DICAS mistakes and how to avoid them. These are mistakes I have actually seen on applications. Not all of these mistakes mean that you'll immediately be disqualified or out of the running for a match, but you still don't want to make these errors. Seeing these errors on applications show that the applicant missed important information, didn't pay attention to necessary details, or isn't fully interested in this program. Avoid making these mistakes on your own DICAS application:1. Not understanding the program emphasis2. Email address is not easy to read3. Personal statement is too long or too short4. Including too many references5. Missing program-specific instructionsYOUR ACTION STEPConsider if one of these errors might be more likely for you than the others, and make a plan to prevent it at all costs. Specifically, I'm going to share my answers to questions you – or dietetics students just like you – have actually asked me. I've got some clips of Q&A sessions from some of the Live Personal Statement Workshops I've held. On this episode's release date, we are 68 days away from the Spring 2021 Match Deadline. January is the last time this Workshop will be offered before then.In the live Workshops, I give dietetics students the guidance they need to write their personal statement in as little as 4 weeks. I only have a few live Workshops during the year, and the next one is going to be January 4-29, 2021. So, in preparation for that, I thought I'd share a little of what it's like to be in the Workshop.Workshop members also get to work directly with me. We have live Q&A sessions each week so you can ask the questions that come up during your own writing process. That way, you can get customized guidance that is specific to your situation, and what you want to share with directors. On this episode's release date, we are 68 days away from the Spring 2021 Match Deadline. January is the last time this Workshop will be offered before then.In this episode, I'm sharing 3 questions I've answered in the Workshop: 1. Why shouldn't I use lack of clinical experience as a weakness?2. Which responses do I change to make it specific to different programs?3. Can I use the program's RD exam pass rate as a reason I chose to apply there?YOUR ACTION STEPFirst of all, use this information while you're writing your own personal statement! Whether or not you join the Workshop, this info likely applies in some way to what you're putting together for your application. Second, if you're not sure about the Workshop being a good fit for you, add your name to the waitlist so you can read through all the info about it when registration opens. Episode 13: What if You Don't Match?IN THIS EPISODEWith a Match rate of 65%, there is some very real anxiety going into the match for a dietetic internship. Every match cycle is going to leave some applicants without an internship placement. Knowing what the process looks like, the timeline for things going on, and the options available to choose from if you don't get a match, can be really helpful in what could be a stressful situation. In this episode, I'm covering 3 important elements that applicants who don't get a match will want to include in their considerations:1. The timeline of events for the days after the Match2. Details about second round applications, ISPP options, and waiting to reapply3. Actions you can take to be ready for whatever alternative application step will be right for youYOUR ACTION STEPPrepare yourself for any outcome. Think through, if you don't get a match, whether or not you want to be involved in Second Round or look into ISPPs, or if waiting for a future match cycle would be a better fit. There's not right answer to that, each person will be different, but thinking through options before the moment they come up can lead to more confidence in your decision simply by being aware of what each choice would mean for you.__________Episode 13 Show Notes: applicationinsider.co/podcast-source/ep13Submit your questions to be answered on the Application Insider Podcast: https://applicationinsider.co/podcastFind more dietetics tips and guidance at applicationinsider.coFollow along on Instagram @applicationinsider__________Full DICAS Application Review: https://applicationinsider.co/application-services-all/spotlight-full-dicasFree 20-Minute Brainstorm Call: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?appointmentType=10706422&owner=17978244Watch the Video: https://youtu.be/TTG9cgO2pCMFall 2020 Matching Calendar: https://www.eatrightpro.org/acend/program-directors/dietetic-internship-match-program-directorsAccredited Programs List: https://www.eatrightpro.org/acend/accredited-programs/accredited-programs-directoryMatching Statistics: https://www.eatrightpro.org/-/media/eatrightpro-files/acend/program-directors/dietetic-internship-match-for-directors/1993-2019-comptr-mtchg-stats-chart.pdf?la=en&hash=52F5CEB4C8E450409E41FDF4CF9E7E67DB98CDE7

Episode 09: How NOT to Talk About Your GPA in Your Personal StatementIN THIS EPISODEYour GPA by itself is not a strength or a weakness – regardless of what the number is. If you were planning to write it as one or the other in your personal statement, it's time to think bigger. Not bigger than whatever numerical value your GPA has been given – bigger as in actual contributing factors to what made your GPA that number. THOSE are strengths and weaknesses directors want to read about. In this episode, we're talking about what DI directors see in DICAS, and what's going on while students wait for notification day to come around. Here are some important things we'll discuss:1. Why your GPA by itself is a cop-out as a strength or a weakness2. Possible strengths or weaknesses you could write about that are still related to your GPA's numeric value3. What directors actually hope to read about your strengths and weaknesses in your personal statementYOUR ACTION STEPUse your GPA as a starting point to figure out what truly are your strengths and weaknesses to share in your personal statement. Do not use your GPA by itself – instead describe what strengths and/or weaknesses make up who you are and contributed to your GPA being what it is._____Episode 09 Show Notes: applicationinsider.co/podcast-source/ep09Submit your questions to be answered on the Application Insider Podcast: https://applicationinsider.co/podcastFind more dietetics tips and guidance at applicationinsider.coFollow along on Instagram @applicationinsider_____Join the Personal Statement Workshop: https://applicationinsider.co/workshops
