Following the Civil War in the USA, during what became known as the Reconstruction Era, freed Black Americans fought hard to establish communities and defend their rights. None of these struggles were more important than access to education, and the efforts of Black American pioneers of public education helped to form the model of publicly funded school for children in the US, as well as codify this into law. For Jesus Followers, Fasting, with Food, Will Symbolize a Victory Over Oneself and Solidify a Personal Relationship with God MESSAGE SUMMARY: In the early Christian Church, which was under great stress and constant physical danger, God's direction and blessing was needed. Therefore, fasting was considered by Church leaders as a key element of their communion with God when they needed both His direction and blessing, as we find in Acts 14:23: “And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.". As a challenge, "consider the food issue" in your life, especially when you need God's direction in your life, because food has such a stronghold on us. Fasting and tithing can significantly deepen your personal relationship with God because fasting is not easy; but success in fasting, especially with food, can symbolize your victory over yourself and solidify your commitment to your personal relationship with God. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, Sabbath rest is truly an unbelievable gift! Thank you that there is nothing I can do to earn your love; it comes without any strings attached. As I close my eyes for these few minutes before you, all I can say is, thank you! In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 133). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM FORGIVEN. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Matthew 4:1-2; Matthew 6:16-18; 2 Samuel 12:15-17; Psalms144:1-15. A WORD FROM THE LORD WEBSITE: www.AWFTL.org. THIS SUNDAY'S AUDIO SERMON: You can listen to Archbishop Beach's Current Sunday Sermon: “Beginnings of Prayer – Part 5: Start Now and Improve Your Prayer Life -- A Robust Prayer Life Will Transform Your Life” at our Website: https://awordfromthelord.org/listen/ DONATE TO AWFTL: https://mygiving.secure.force.com/GXDonateNow?id=a0Ui000000DglsqEAB
Beginnings of Prayer – Part 5: Start Now and Improve Your Prayer Life -- A Robust Prayer Life Will Transform Your Life MESSAGE SUMMARY: INTRODUCTIOIN -- Prayer is: 1) spending time with God – acknowledging God's presence in all our lives' activities; and 2) conversation with God – listening to and talking with God. Prayer reflects on our relationship with God. Why don't we pray. The Apostle James, in James 4:2-3, provides a perspective regarding Prayer Life: “You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions." In praying, we should know the difference between prayers of "petition" (praying for one's own needs) and prayers of "intercession" (praying for the needs of others). God wants prayers of "petition" from us -- all our needs and concerns should be brought to Him in prayer because He loves and cares for us. However, God want us to, also, focus on others and their needs (intercession) -- physical and spiritual. "Intercessory prayer” is fundamental to deepening our prayer life and our personal relationship with God. SUNDAY MESSAGE -- This Sermon is Q and A session on prayer with Archbishop Beach and Rev. Matt Jordan. Jan Karen, author of the Mitford Series, says that "In the big issues of life as well as the small, God wants to hear from His children . . . the most important thing we get from prayer is the relationship that we enter into with God.". As Jesus tells us in Luke 11:9-10 that, as His followers we are both expected to pray and to ask as a fundamental part of our lives in Him: “And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.". Additionally, Luke tells us, in Luke 18:1, that we should continue to pray: “And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart." How do you know that God has answered your prayer? What does it mean when God has not answered your prayer? Why, if God answers our prayers, should we ask for others to pray for us? How do we know if we are praying in the Holy Spirit? Why does my mind start wandering when I start praying? How good is it to have a prayer journal? Why, sometimes, are we tempted to sin when we pray? How important is fasting? Do we stop in our prayers enough to give thanks to the Lord? The common position, derivative of all these questions is expressed to us in Ephesians 3:21b-24 that prayer is life changing and fundamental to a life in Jesus: “the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.". Pray specific prayers, in the Holy Spirit and in Scripture, for ourselves and for others -- be persistent. TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A FORGIVEN. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9). President Xi Jinping's trip to Latin America for multilateral gatherings and bilateral talks has fueled expectations that China will continue championing inclusive growth and better global governance and further solidify ties with key partners in the vibrant region.Xi embarked on the landmark trip to Peru and Brazil on Wednesday, his sixth visit to the region since 2013, for the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima and the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. He will also make state visits to the two nations.Analysts said that Xi's visit will provide a key opportunity to deepen collaboration with major economies, forge consensus on shared development goals, and foster new momentum for global economic integration, while contributing to the evolving multipolar world order.Cui Shoujun, founder and director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Renmin University of China, said the presence of the Chinese president at the two key economic forums showcases Beijing's unequivocal support for multilateralism."China advocates addressing global issues through consultation and cooperation and opposing unilateralism and protectionism. This approach fosters unity between developing and developed countries, prompting them to jointly seek a win-win solution for global governance," Cui said.Analysts said that Beijing's position will resonate strongly with the theme of the APEC Economic Leaders' Week this year, which named trade and investment for inclusive growth, digital innovation and sustainable and resilient development as its priorities. In his remarks at the 30th APEC leaders' meeting in 2023, Xi emphasized the importance of innovation, openness, green development and inclusive growth as key drivers to usher in another "golden 30 years "for the region.Cui said that China "promotes economic integration within the Asia-Pacific region through APEC, providing practical solutions for issues such as connectivity, digital economy and green development among member economies".Carlos Vasquez, the 2024 chair of the APEC Senior Officials' Meeting, said in a statement that the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting aims to provide greater policy direction for APEC members to deliver an environment that facilitates trade, harnesses regional economic integration and technologically driven growth, and sparks business innovation and employment. As for the G20 Summit, expectations are running high for Beijing to continue advocating reform in global economic governance and proposing to enhance the voice and participation of developing countries within the international financial system."China's inclusive proposals have now won the backing of the developing world and further enhanced the balance and stability of the global governance system," said Cui from Renmin University of China.Brazil, the host of the G20 Summit this year, has listed the fight against hunger, poverty and inequality, as well as the sustainable development of economy, society and environment and the reform of global governance, as priorities. The opening of the summit on Monday will be marked by the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a Brazilian initiative that will mobilize countries and international organizations to accelerate efforts to combat hunger and poverty by 2030, according to a statement released by the Brazilian government.Zhou Zhiwei, a senior research fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that China and Brazil share a wide range of consensus points on global governance, and the unified stance between the two emerging countries is essential for formulating joint proposals for the Global South."The alignment between China and Brazil on the upcoming G20 Summit's three priority issues is not only pivotal for the Global South, but also for the future of global economic governance," he said. The two nations have also jointly issued a six-point proposal on pushing for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and calling for the de-escalation of the situation. The proposal has received widespread support from the international community.China is the first major country to support the accession of the African Union to the G20, while Beijing has also long advocated bridging the "digital divide" between the Global North and the Global South, and advancing reforms in the international financial structure. The trip is also expected to inject fresh impetus into the building of a China-Latin America community with a shared future.China stands as the region's second-largest trading partner as well as the largest trading partner for many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, having signed free trade agreements with five nations and now engaging in high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with 22 countries. The areas of collaboration have steadily expanded beyond traditional sectors such as trade, finance and infrastructure, to now include emerging fields such as energy, digital technology and aerospace, Lin Jian, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said at a news briefing on Tuesday."China has always been a trusted true friend and good partner to Latin American and Caribbean countries and their people, and the relationships have entered a new era of equality, mutual benefit, innovation, openness and people-centered development," he said.Analysts also highlighted the win-win nature of cooperation with Peru and Brazil and the immense potential for China to scale up the cooperation.Xi will be making his second state visit to Peru, a country with robust trading ties with China. China is Peru's largest global trading partner, its largest export market, and its largest source of imports, while Peru is China's fourth-largest trading partner in Latin America."China has consistently taken a proactive approach to promoting mutually beneficial cooperation with Peru," said Cui, from the Center for Latin American Studies at Renmin University of China. "Bilateral cooperation has developed into a comprehensive, multilevel and wide-ranging framework, with the relationship serving as a model for friendly cooperation between China and Latin America."During talks with visiting Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra in June, Xi named Chancay Port, a mega port constructed by a Chinese company, as a new maritime hub linking Latin America with Asia, aiming to make the "Chancay-to-Shanghai "route a true path to shared prosperity and development for China and Peru.Zhou, from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the port, another landmark project under the Belt and Road Initiative, will significantly cut logistics costs, elevate ties between Beijing and Lima, and make Peru a key hub for China's cooperation with Latin America. He also pointed out that cooperation on science and technology could emerge as a new growth engine for ties between China and Brazil."The frequent interactions between President Xi and the leaders of Brazil and Peru demonstrate strong political mutual trust," he said. "This latest round of high-level diplomacy is expected to further enhance China's ties and cooperation with both countries."

Welcome back to the Daily Mastermind. Are you living a Proactive or Reactive Life? Do you feel that you have control over your destiny and the life you are creating? Or do you feel that you are just at the whim of what ever is coming your way? Well today I want to talk with you about the fact that you definitely can control or influence the direction your life is going. I want to run through several things I feel you can do to craft the life of your dreams. I also plan to start diggin into a timeless classic that you may have already read...Think and Grow Rich...over the coming week. 1. The Desire for Change To change your reality, start by asking yourself: Do you truly desire change? Consider your current state in life. Do you feel in control, or are you at the mercy of your circumstances? The key to transformation is understanding that you can create your reality by adopting a proactive approach rather than a reactive one. Our lives go through cycles where change is needed or desired. I've experienced this firsthand, such as ten years ago when I faced the challenges of a divorce and a business venture shifting out of my control. During such times, proactively crafting change is essential. 2. The Power of Your Philosophy Your beliefs and philosophy will guide you on this journey. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. Turkeys and Eagles, Part 2: Created to Be Like God MESSAGE SUMMARY: Introduction – In Part 1 of this series, “Called as an ‘Eagle' But Saved as a ‘Turkey'” we learned, from the story about “Bubba the Eagle” and from relating this story to Ephesians 4, that many of us Christians have been “Turkeyized”. We learned that, rather than practicing New Testament Christianity, we have been practicing, in too many places, “Churchianity”. Now, we are looking at Paul's letter to the Ephesians to help break us out of this “Churchianity”. Rather than soaring with the eagles, too many of us are gobbling with the turkeys. Message – In this teaching today, we will look at “Created to Be Like God”. We live in a world that has many people with no desire to soar, and they will never reach the heights that God intended for us. Too many Christians are grounded because we have not been taught how to soar like an eagle. Now, “turkey thinking” posits that “living as a Christian is no different than living like everyone else”. However, “eagle thinking” posits that “as a Christian, I think different from everyone else” In Ephesians 4:17-18, “Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.”. Analogous for us today, we can substitute “nonbeliever” for “Gentile” in this passage. The key to how we live is how we think. This behavior is, also, illustrated in Romans 1:21 where Paul describes where he cannot tell if a group is really Christian because their thinking is so messed up. “Turkey thinking” says “I am a sinner always in need”, but “eagle thinking” says “I am created to be like God”. When becoming a follower of Jesus, we become a new creation, and the Spirit of God indwells us; therefore, God is in our lives as we live our lives. In this context, “turkey thinking” would say “I'm just a sinner and I'm stuck”; but “eagle thinking” says “I'm created in the image of God”. We should be different from those nonbelievers living in today's culture because we have Jesus living in us. However, many of us have been “Turkeyized”; but with Jesus in our lives, we can soar with the Eagles! TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, Sabbath rest is truly an unbelievable gift! Thank you that there is nothing I can do to earn your love; it comes without any strings attached. As I close my eyes for these few minutes before you, all I can say is, thank you! "I feel like I was underlooked a little bit on social media. Everyone was talking about Cam (Myers) and Olli (Hoare) and Stewy (McSweyn), but I think that kind of worked in my favor. There's no pressure – I had everything to gain and nothing to lose. So I was like, “Alright, let's go out here and have a crack at it.” I think it was kind of a blessing in disguise almost." Wisconsin's Adam Spencer is the Australian 1500m national champion. He was the runner-up in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships back in March. In Adelaide, he just narrowly beat out fellow Badger legend and Olympic finalist Olli Hoare. It was widely considered the best 1500m field in Australian history and it delivered with a tactical race that came down to the final 100 meters. Adam has the Olympic standard from his 3:31 personal best at last summer's London Diamond League. Now, he's just got to prove his fitness to selectors and he'll be squared away to make his Olympic debut in Paris. He did represent Australia at last summer's World Championships in Budapest. We recorded this a few weeks ago and since then, he just won the Big Ten title in the 800 meters. Watch for him as the NCAA season heads into its championship run, where he'll be looking to win his first NCAA title. In this podcast I talk about the importance of step 5 in my Neurocycle process: the active reach. This is a replay of a Neurolive webinar I did on my app. For the full AD-FREE episode please see neurocycle.app. In case you haven't listened to any of my other podcasts or read any of my books or research, the Neurocycle is a way to harness our thinking power that I have developed and researched over the past three decades (I discuss this in detail in my book Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess and my app Neurocycle). It has 5 steps. The first step is to 1. gather awareness of how we feel mentally and physically and our perspective when we are dealing with a past wound. The second step is to 2. reflect on how we feel. Then we 3. write down our reflections to help organize our thinking. The fourth step is to 4. recheck: think about what our thoughts and feelings are trying to tell us. What does it say about what happened to us? What is our “antidote”— how will we work through how our thoughts are affecting us? Lastly, do the 5. active reach. This is a thought or action we need to practice daily to help us reconceptualize what we thought about in the previous step. What we are going to do each day to give ourselves the time and mental space needed to deal with what is bothering us and turn our destructive thoughts into a constructive future?
