Your Coaching Journey

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2026 28:01

Coaching conversations are a great space in which to support individuals in engaging in a spot of meta-cognition; doing a little thinking about their thinking. With a little help, our coachees can explore their potentially unhelpful thinking around a scenario that is proving difficult for them.    There are different ways of approaching such situations and various tools that we can utilise, as coaches, to support our coachee's thinking. One such tool is the ABCDE model, which has its origins in the work of one of the founders of the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach, Albert Ellis.   In this episode, we explore the ABCDE model, which allows the coachee to take any given event; consider what beliefs they have about  that event; explore what the consequences of their belief and their thinking have, for themself and those around them.    Then, with the help of their coach, the coachee can dispute their own beliefs and reach a better emotional understanding and perspective.     Join us, on this week's podcast,  as we take a deep dive into the value and utility of the ABCDE model in the coaching room.  Resources: To see a visual of the ABCDE model, visit our website: https://yourcoachingjourney.com/project/148-coaching-tool-abcde-model/      Enjoy the podcast? Is success in business simply about having the right idea, raising the perfect amount of money, or having the right connections? According to our guest today, David Senra, it's none of those. It's about obsession. David Senra has read 400+ biographies of history's greatest entrepreneurs, studying how they actually built their companies. On his podcast Founders, he distills the lives of iconic builders into actionable frameworks. He also hosts in-depth conversations with living founders on his new show David Senra — from Daniel Ek to Michael Dell to Todd Graves — extracting the mental models you only earn after decades in the arena. In this wide-ranging conversation, we break down: • Why history's greatest entrepreneurs hire for spikes, not well-rounded resumes • Why durability is a first-rate virtue — and most businesses die of indigestion, not starvation • How Steve Jobs worked barefoot at Atari — and why Nolan Bushnell kept him anyway • Why George Lucas bet unapologetically on himself • How Sam Zell tortured himself into greatness — and why he chose freedom over money • Why Michael Dell says he works “all the days” • The founder archetypes framework — and why founder-problem fit beats founder-market fit • Why Todd Graves hasn't changed his menu in 30 years — and built a $20B chicken empire • How Rick Rubin became a reducer, not a producer — and why ruthless editing creates timeless work • Why belief comes before ability — non-negotiable for builders If you want to think like Jobs, Bezos, Zell, or Munger, this episode will permanently change how you approach focus, entrepreneurship, and building something that lasts. When coachees are facing difficulties in their work or home lives it's easy for them to spend their time in the coaching room in problem-talk. They often speak from a place of helplessness and a lack of resources. Using a strengths based approach can allow a coachee to connect with their own inner resources, and some external resources too, to allow them to think through their situation, find their own solution and move forward.   In this episode we explore what a strengths approach looks like, what tools are useful in drawing out someone's strengths and when it might be useful to engage with this approach.  Resources:  VIA Character Strengths: https://www.viacharacter.org/survey/account/register Strengths & Values Cards: https://yourcoachingjourney.com/discovery/   Enjoy the podcast? Coaching can take many forms and, for the most part, it will involve a conversation where the coach is focused on the coachee. However, sometimes it's helpful for the coachee to draw their thoughts out on paper and for the focus in the coaching room to switch to what has been created.  Focusing on the coachee's artistic endeavours can reveal new insights and draw out aspects of a scenario that might never have surfaced in a normal coaching conversation. We're strong advocates of using art in coaching. In this episode we discuss different ways in which we might support our coachees in getting in touch with their creative talents and expanding their thinking in the process.  We explore some of the neurological reasons for the use of art being an effective approach in the coaching room and also invite our listeners to be curious and have a go at a simple artistic exercise.   Resources:  Research article on creativity and neuroimaging: Julian Kutsche, Joseph J. Feeling Restless in Life Even When Everything Looks Fine Have you ever tried to explain that quiet dissatisfaction you feel, only to be told you should be grateful? You may have a good life, a stable career, and even outward success. However, you still feel unsettled. If you are feeling restless in life, especially when everything looks good on paper, this episode explains why that feeling matters. Feeling restless in life does not mean something is wrong with you. Instead, it often means something important is trying to get your attention.   Why Feeling Restless in Life Is So Common Many people grow up believing that happiness comes from stability, sacrifice, and staying the course. As a result, when restlessness appears, it creates confusion and guilt. You may hear: "You should just be grateful." "Everyone feels this way." "Work isn't supposed to make you happy." However, feeling restless in life is not a lack of gratitude. It is feedback.   Feeling Restless in Life Even Though You Are Successful There is a unique kind of frustration that comes from being restless but successful. You followed the responsible path. You built security. You did what you were supposed to do. And yet, something still feels missing. For example, vacations help for a short time, but the dissatisfaction returns. Therefore, the issue is not exhaustion or burnout alone. It is deeper than that.   Feeling Restless in Life Is Not a Mindset Problem Many people try to fix restlessness with positive thinking. However, this does not work long-term. Feeling restless in life is usually not a mindset issue. Instead, it is an identity misalignment. When your current identity no longer matches who your soul wants you to become, your emotions act as a compass. Restlessness, boredom, and frustration point toward the need for alignment and evolution.   Do You Have to Change Careers When You Feel Restless in Life? Not necessarily. Feeling restless in life does not automatically mean you need to quit your job or start over. Sometimes alignment happens by integrating who you truly are into what you already do. In other words, you do not have to abandon logic, structure, or success to live in alignment. You get to define what alignment looks like for you.   Why Feeling Restless in Life Creates a Lack of Clarity Many people say they lack clarity about what is next. However, clarity does not come from overthinking the future or analyzing the past. Instead, clarity comes from present-day choices. As you make decisions, you receive feedback. As a result, knowing what you do not want becomes just as valuable as knowing what you do want. This process naturally reduces confusion and increases alignment.   Feeling Restless in Life Can Be an Invitation to Evolve Feeling restless in life does not mean you are failing or ungrateful. It often means you are being invited into your next phase of growth. You were not created simply to exist, perform, or endure. You were created to evolve, experience joy, and live in alignment with who you are meant to be.   Two Aligned Paths Forward If You Are Feeling Restless in Life If this episode resonates, there are two aligned ways to explore this work further. You can book a consult with Tina to explore private, root-cause identity work and determine if it aligns with your goals. Or you can explore Catalyst Recalibrated, a long-term embodiment mentorship designed to support identity alignment and integration at your own pace. There is no behind. You are exactly where you are meant to be.   Final Thoughts on Feeling Restless in Life If you are feeling restless in life and wondering whether this is as good as it gets, the answer is no. Restlessness is not the problem. It is the invitation. If this episode supported you, leaving a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify helps others find this conversation.

"Flow," often described as being "in the zone," is a psychological state of deep and effortless immersion in an activity, where you lose any sense of yourself, time and possible distractions.     It's a concept that was introduced by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, in the 1970s and provides an important aspect of the Engagement element of Martin Seligman's PERMAH model within the world of positive psychology.   Having an understanding of Flow might help you to support your coachees in improving their own wellbeing.    In this episode of our podcast we explore Flow, what it is and what it isn't, and how it might be useful in the coaching room.    Enjoy the podcast? Stress is a normal and natural response that we have all experienced in our lives. It's also a phenomenon that frequently enters the coaching room.    Coaching is often focused initially on problems that the coachee wishes to resolve, and that is a natural space for stress to show up. Coaching is also frequesntly concerned with change that the coachee wishes to see, and a time of change is definitely a point at which stress might appear.    In this episode we are exploring the different aspects of stress, including why it can be useful, and when it's really not. We will also recap on what stress is and the effects it might have on individuals.    Finally we will be looking at what tools there are that can help us to explore stressful situations with our coachees, and perhaps, how they can manage their own stress.    Join us as we take you on a journey through stress in the coaching room that will hopefully leave you more confident in having conversations that address the topic.    Enjoy the podcast? We love an exploration of the world of Transactional Analysis and this is our fourth episode that attempts to explain some of the concepts that have emerged from Transactional Analysis theory.    In this episode we're exploring the OK Corral, which provides a way of illustrating the idea of Life Positions, which emerged within the field of Transactional Analysis. The concept of Life Positions can help us, and our clients, to gain a better understanding of how we're showing up, what our values and beliefs are, and how we view the world and our place in it.    The idea of Life Positions was developed by Thomas Harris in the 1960, with the publication of his book, 'I'm OK, You're OK'.    Franklin Ernst's notion of 'The OK Corral' was a visual representation of the ideas that Thomas Harris had developed and set out to illustrate what is happening when people are OK or not OK within any social dynamic.    In this episode we explore the OK Corral and offer our thoughts on how the concept might be useful to us and our coachees in the coaching room.    Resources: To view the visuals for this model, please visit our webpage: https://yourcoachingjourney.com/project/episode-138-coaching-tools-life-positions/ Enjoy the podcast? Episode #137: Reflection

Your Coaching Journey

Reflection is an essential aspect of any coaching practice and something that we actively encourage all of our students to do from the start of their coaching journeys.    Coaching conversations happen in the moment and the emergent nature of them means that they could go in many directions. Where the conversation flows is dependent on the thinking of the coach and the coachee in real time.  There is little time to reflect on what went well, what didn't go so well and what might have been different. Engaging in some reflective practice will help any coach, whatever their experience, to find new ways of looking at their coaching conversations and will definitely help to inform future sessions.    For less experienced coaches, reflecting on a coaching session can spark some curiosity about different approaches, tools and techniques that might have been useful to utilise within a coaching conversation, and provide some motivation to continue learning. For more experienced coaches, reflection can help to ward off any complacency and slipping into unhelpful ways of being in the coaching room.    Taking time to reflect on the possible impact the coaching sessions are having on us, as coaches, is also a valuable way to keep taking care of ourselves and to notice when we might be in need of support.    In this episode we share some models that can help to facilitate our reflections as coaches. Join us for a conversation that might just offer you a new favourite way to reflect on your coaching.    Resources: To view the visuals of these models, please visit our webpage: https://yourcoachingjourney.com/project/episode137-reflection/   Enjoy the podcast? What if your entire market has fewer than 100 LOs? Is hiring a recruiter still worth it? In this episode of Recruiting Conversations, I walk through the exact framework for determining whether a recruiter is the right move in a small market. I cover the systems, mindset, math, and sequencing that make it work, and share a real-world story of one leader who turned 85 LOs into 9 hires in 12 months. This isn't about headcount. It's about mastery, clarity, and building a system that multiplies your time. Episode Breakdown [00:00] The Question – Is it worth hiring a recruiter if I only have 70 to 100 loan officers in my area? [01:00] Why Market Size Is the Wrong Lens – It's not how many LOs exist, it's how many are aligned and how strong your system is [02:00] Visibility vs. True Recruiting – Reaching out once is not recruiting. You need consistent, structured engagement [02:30] Real Story: Midwest Leader With 85 LOs – After mapping the market, he realized very few LOs had received consistent value or follow-up [03:30] Question 1: Is Recruiting a Top 3 Priority? – If not, a recruiter becomes an admin, not a multiplier [04:00] Question 2: Do You Have a System? – CRM, avatar, cadence, scripting, follow-up, all must be in place before hiring [04:45] Question 3: Are You Recruiting for Fit or Volume? – In small markets, alignment is more important than raw production [05:20] Question 4: Can You Tell a Clear Story? – If your recruiter can't communicate your value clearly, you'll lose to comp-focused competitors [06:00] The Math That Makes It Work 3 key hires = $60K/month revenue $720K annually More than enough to justify the hire [06:30] What a Recruiter Should Be – Not a cold caller, but a connector who runs value plays and books warm calls [07:00] When to Delay the Hire – If your system is messy or undefined, wait. Build first. Then hire [07:30] Real Results – The Midwest leader built a system first, hired a recruiter second, and scaled to 9 hires in a "too small" market [08:00] Action Steps Build a clean LO list Document your recruiting message Create a 90-day value-add follow-up plan Prove it works Hire a recruiter to run the top of funnel [09:30] Closing Thought – You don't need more market. You need more mastery. Strategy wins, not size Key Takeaways It's Not About Market Size. It's About Market Mastery – A recruiter in a small market works if the system is already built Recruiting Must Be a Top Priority – No hire can replace your ownership of the vision Build First, Hire Second – Document your message, process, and rhythms before bringing someone in Focus on Alignment Over Volume – In a small market, values and vision matter more than raw numbers Your Story Wins the Game – When your message is clear, your recruiter becomes a magnet, not a salesperson A small market doesn't limit your impact. Lack of clarity does. Build the system. Then scale it with the right partner. Want help building your recruiting system so a recruiter can multiply it? Do You Have a Personal Relationship with God and Pray Directly to God, the Creator of the Universe, for the Needs of Others? MESSAGE SUMMARY: Will you come before God with your prayers, and for whom will you pray? We can and should come before God on behalf ourselves and others -- intercessory prayer. You and I are given the privilege of following Moses' example when he prayed to God on behalf of his people in Psalms 102:1-2: “Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to you! Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call!". Because of what Jesus has done for us, we can exercise this privilege of praying directly to God, the Creator of the Universe. You come before God by talking to Him with your prayers and in a personal relationship with Him. For whom and what do you pray?   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 132). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Resentment. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Compassion. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Romans 1:10-12; James 5:13-18; Exodus 3:1-15; Psalms 130:1-8. SummaryIn this episode of The Chasing Health Podcast, Chase Smith and Chris Bealhen answer listener questions in a fun and helpful Q&A session. They start by talking about the difference between guilt and shame. Guilt can actually help us see when we made a choice that doesn't match our goals, but shame makes us feel bad about who we are. The guys explain why a little guilt is okay, but shame can stop us from getting help or making progress. They also answer questions like: How can what you do to lose weight be the same as what you do to keep it off? What should you focus on if you're single after a long marriage? What should you do if you're tracking your food but still feel hungry? And how do you focus on fat loss when you're super tired after work? Chase and Chris give real tips on how to handle these challenges while keeping your health goals in mind.Chapters(00:00) Guilt vs. Shame: What's the Difference?(05:23) Do You Have to Keep Doing What You Did to Lose Weight?(12:30) Single After 28 Years: Now What?(15:12) Tracking Food but Still Hungry? In this powerful episode of the BraveCo Podcast, Jason Vallotton sits down with his father, Kris Vallotton, to discuss what it really takes to prepare sons for marriage and build strong, lasting relationships. The conversation explores how most men enter marriage unprepared, largely because they were never taught key values like covenant, ownership, emotional responsibility, and flexibility.Kris shares profound insights into the difference between cohabitation and covenant marriage, explaining how true commitment is rooted in sacrificial love and lifelong dedication. They emphasize the importance of teaching young men emotional regulation, spiritual leadership, and practical habits—long before they enter a romantic relationship. The episode also dives into the role of a woman as a “catalyst” in a man's life, and why many men will never fully step into their purpose without that relational sharpening. They unpack the danger of coddling kids, the necessity of emotional flexibility in marriage, and how confidence is built through consistent ownership and challenge—not comfort.Jason and Kris weave together stories from their lives, including powerful examples of parenting, failure, resilience, and the redemptive grace of God. Whether you're a young man preparing for marriage, a father raising sons, or a man trying to rebuild after a breakdown, this episode offers deep wisdom, practical guidance, and raw encouragement to grow into the man God designed you to be.Chapters:00:00 – Do You Have a Plan to Become the Man God Called You to Be?  01:24 – Why We're Failing to Prepare Our Sons for Marriage  04:54 – The Power of Intentional Fatherhood: Raising Sons Into Men  06:02 – Marriage Is a Covenant, Not a Contract  09:10 – What Every Man Must Know Before He Marries  12:36 – Teaching Emotional Safety and Responsibility in the Home  15:21 – You're Not Supposed to Be Complete Before Marriage  18:00 – How a Wife Catalyzes a Man's Purpose  24:54 – Real Manhood Is Built Through Pain, Ownership, and Grit  33:48 – The Secret to Strong Marriages: Emotional Flexibility and Covenant Leadership ABOUT BRAVECOWe live in a time where men are hunting for the truth and looking for the codebook to manhood. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Past Failures. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Grace.
