How do you define something or someone that's toxic? A toxic person or relationship is typically described as one that makes you feel unsupported, misunderstood, demeaned, or attacked. A toxic relationship will often make you feel worse in general or about yourself. On the other hand, a healthy relationship will make you feel better, more secure, and overall joyful. Toxic people can leave you feeling down, are able to suck the energy right out of you, and can even mess with your ability to create new bonds long term. But how do you spot the signs of a toxic relationship? Tune into this week's episode to find out how to spot the signs, how to handle it and how to recover once the relationship is over. The Mental Health Foundation defines relationships as ‘the way in which two or more people are connected, or the state of being connected'. Relationships include the intimate relationships we have with our partners, those we form with our parents, siblings and grandparents, and those we form socially with our friends, work colleagues, teachers, healthcare professionals and community. Relationships are one of the most important aspects of our lives, yet we can often forget just how crucial our connections with other people are for our physical and mental health. People who are more socially connected to family, friends, or their community are happier, physically healthier, and live longer - with fewer mental health problems than people who are less well connected. It's not just the number of friends you have, and it's not whether or not you're in a committed relationship, but it's the quality of your close relationships that matters. As a society and as individuals, we have to prioritize building and maintaining good relationships and tackling the barriers to forming them. Extensive evidence shows Having close, positive relationships can give us a purpose and sense of belonging. We've said it before, breakups suck. The tears, the anger, the messy nights out, and the emotional eating are all telltale signs of a heart in torment. So, if men and women are capable of feeling emotional pain when a break up occurs, why is it so hard to understand why he's 'being distant' or why she 'still wants to be friends?' -- Well, the reason for this is linked to the social role that relationships play and how they feed into our perceptions of self-worth, as well as the fundamental ways men and women deal with the same emotions differently. So, is a man's break up method or a woman's more effective? Let's be honest, the faster we can deal with heartbreak and get back to our normal, life-loving, less-mopey selves, the better, right? When it comes to the behavior of men and women in relationships, almost everyone has an opinion—and usually, it's about how the sexes are different. But what does the research tell us about how men and women really behave in romantic relationships? Often, that they're more alike than we think, and that our common assumptions are wrong.
