Being adaptable in challenging times is essential. Live in the present, not in the past or the future.Being present and mindful helps you become more aware of the glimmers that are in the here and the now.To come back to the present, bring awareness to your breath and your physical body. Gratitude is the gateway to glimmers. Noticing the the good things around you and cultivating a gratitude practice, such as keeping a gratitude journal or a gratitude jar, help you feel a sense of hope and joy.Listening to a beautiful song (such as Gabriel's Oboe by Ennio Morricone) or admiring art in all its forms helps change your state of being. If you loved this episode, we would love to hear from you, send us an email to carla@themerrymakersisters.com or emma@themerrymakersisters.com or message us on our Facebook and Instagram accounts @themerrymakersisters.Always merrymaking,Emma + CarlaP.s if you ever need further help or guidance please contact Lifeline or Beyond Blue. In this Get Merry podcast episode, we delve into this month's MerryBody theme which is, self-reflection.“People who have had little self-reflection live life in a huge reality blind-spot.” — Bryant McGillThis is what we spoke about during the episodeSelf-reflection is a way to understand ourselves, how we interact with the life around us, and how we learn to do better.Self-reflection is a place where judgment should not exist. Rather than judgment, go in with acceptance front of mind. There are certain Yoga poses inside the MerryBody App, such as forward folds, that really invite self-reflection and going inwards. You're gazing inward on yourself, you're forward folding toward yourself and getting to know you.Where is the time for self-reflection and how do we make time for this? We listened to the Founders podcast episode about Brunello Cucinelli and how he would spend hours and hours in contemplation.Practising Yoga is a method to go inwards and can help you realise your morals and ethics.Self-reflection helps us understand perception vs. reality. This realisation helps you let go of your righteousness. How do we actually practice self-reflection? Yoga is a great practice, especially yin yoga. Write, journal, walk in nature. Sit by yourself and welcome in your thoughts. If you haven't done a Yin Yoga class, check out one of our classes on YouTube. It's called Love Your Liver Yin Yoga.Self-reflection helps us to learn from the past and live better in the present. Welcome to Episode 320 of the Get Merry podcast and our first official episode for 2022! It took us a little while to get back into it but here we are!Every month inside MerryBody, we have a collective theme, and it's something that we've been doing since the beginning.Sometimes, because life happens, we can find ourselves going through the motions without adding anything new or learning something different. Having this theme allows us to reflect, to discover something new about ourselves and other people. So, on our 36th month (Happy Birthday, MerryBody!), our theme is COURAGE.So, what is courage and how we can cultivate more of it into our lives?Stuff we talked about…Courage is not a lack of fear and anxiety nor a super mega confidence. It's, instead, stepping forward regardless of how you're feeling. It's taking a step forward, even in the face of adversity, in the face of fear and uncertainty. When we're going through hard times, knowing that getting through it will build that resilience muscle. You know it sucks but you're going to move forward, learn from this, and grow from this.So often, people are like “I need to do this before I can do that. I need to get this ticked off before I can take that step forward.” And so often, self-doubt is louder than courage. But when we begin to practice moments of courage, that's when it will grow and become a part of our lives.Courage is really about living your truth which is often hard. But when you take that step and you feel stronger and better afterwards, you feel more confident and honest with yourself. And the more you do it, the easier it becomes. How do we cultivate courage? A bit of self-reflection work is needed. Ask yourself what you want to welcome into your life and visualize that it's already happening. We're not always going to feel courageous and fired up. Sometimes you need to slow down, go inwards and just think about something you're grateful for. Life is all about the ebbs and flows, lightness and darkness, night and day, and you're not always going to step forward with courage and that's okay!We would love to hear from you. If you have any A-HA moments, questions, comments or feedback about this episode, send us an email at carla@themerrymakersisters.com or emma@themerrymakersisters.com or message us on our Facebook and Instagram accounts @themerrymakersisters.Always merrymaking,Emma + CarlaP.s if you ever need further help or guidance please contact Lifeline or Beyond Blue. Over the last week, we've been telling each other to be more patient, right now we are in the process of selling our investment house, we also started investing in NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and also there is that whole running a business thing! All areas where patience is required. We've been reminding each other that all is coming. So of course, our real-life experiences make the best topic for a Get Merry episode! That feeling of being impatient relates to the whole idea of not being content with where you're, thinking that the grass looks greener on the other side. It's a feeling of excitement with what you're anticipating to happen. But if it is creating anxiety and stress in your present moment, this is where we need to make some mindset shifts. Stuff we talked about...Allow yourself to actually be in the journey instead of trying to be over there and speed it up. This is all part of the process. When you're focused on the future, you create a feeling of 'stuck' within the present moment.“Impatience breeds anxiety, fear, discouragement and failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness, and a rational outlook, which eventually leads to success.”― Brian Adams. When you feel like you're not there or you're not good enough, you feel anxious and start comparing yourselves to people who are getting all the things that you want. These "bad" feelings are our greatest teachers. When we have awareness, we can bring a moment of patience, presence and gratitude, and feel expansive.Usually, the thing that we're being impatient about is not the main thing in life. It is also probably not the answer to all your problems.Be excited that you have a goal and that you want to be somewhere else. But also be grateful for the journey there. Negative body image, interview with clinical psychologist Miriam Emad

We were having lunch with our amazing friend Miriam Emad (also an amazing clinical psychologist). Ahhh we have the best chats and from this 2-hour love-filled catch up we realised we need to get her back on the Get Merry podcast. STAT! We couldn't wait, so today we're sharing an interview with Miriam from our MerryBody Online Summit. During this chat we discuss all things negative body image. In this interview, you’ll gain a psychologist’s perspective on negative body image. You'll also leave with ideas and ways to deal with your negative thoughts around the way you look.Miriam talks about where and when negative body image originated and how it’s adapted in our modern society, why we compare ourselves to others and how we can begin the practice of just observing our body rather than forever judging and criticizing it.Stuff we talked about…Self-restricted dieting dates all the way back to the 13th century due to lack of resources. It was the women who would first deprive themselves so they were able to provide for their families.During industrialisation, as women began work and do hard labour, they became darker skinned and muscular. However, in this time being frail and pale was an upper-class statement, “There was this real cultural idealisation of thinness from that point because it became an upper-class statement, so women started to strive to be frail and pale.”Now everywhere you look whether you’re opening Instagram or a magazine, from such a young age you are being exposed to countless frail models. So it’s only human for you to ask, “Why don’t I look like this?”After this action of comparing ourselves and because we don’t look like the model we label ourselves ‘bad’ or ‘not quite right’ or ‘not good enough’.Miriam talks about changing our perspectives. To practise not defining anything as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but change to non-judgemental language like ‘I am’ and ‘I exist’.Welcoming this change from harsh self-judgement to non-judgmental and non-labelled, we put ourselves in a space where we don’t have to love something about ourselves to accept it.Miriam talks about moving away from ‘how does my body look’ to ‘how does my body work’.If you’d like to contact Miriam you can chat to her via email at… miriam.emad.psych@gmail.comMore about Miriam Emad, clinical psychologist.Miriam is a registered psychologist and holds a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology. She is experienced providing individual and group-based psychological interventions to clients with complex needs across a range of settings, including private practice, psychiatric hospitals, and outpatient services. Her work has spanned alcohol and other drugs, harm reduction programs, and adolescents and youth.Miriam’s clinical practice is focused on supporting clients with severe mental illness to live meaningful and productive lives. She has worked extensively with individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, mood disorders, and complex trauma. Miriam is especially skilled in assisting patients to enhance emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.Check out al the Get Merry episode, and if you love them please leave a comment! And if you bargain away your life for security now, you will never find your bliss".The pressures of beauty standards in the public eye, starvation, eating disorders. How Taylor being a healthy weight is so beneficial for all of her fans. She said..."There's always some standard of beauty that you're not meeting. Because if you're thin enough, then you don't have that ass that everybody wants. But if you have enough weight on you to have an ass then your stomach isn't flat enough. It's all just fucking impossible."The dangers of relying on external validation as the guiding light for success and love.Taylor's work ethic... amazing. Her perspective on being a woman in the spotlight at age 30..."This is probably one of my last opportunities as an artist to grasp onto that kind of success. So, I don't know, as I'm reaching thirty, I'm like, I want to work really hard while society is still tolerating me being successful."How she became vocal during the 2018 mid-term elections, she wanted to be on 'the right side of history'. In this #GetMerry podcast episode we literally sat down and Carla said "shall we talk about our values" and boom we hit record.  We believe it is extremely important to know what our core values are because once we know, we can align ourselves with people, jobs and decisions that match up with our values. We had this idea for our episode 100. Actually, it wasn't our idea... heaps of other people have done this. We wanted to get someone else to interview us. It would be a huge celebration of goodness to mark this epic 100 number. Did you catch the title? Shame and shadows. Yeh, it's full of goodness but not what we expected and probably not what you expect either (now you have to listen, yeh?). We asked our amazing, beautiful, red headed, potty mouthed friend AKA Karly Nimmo AKA the sexual dancing goddess (this will make sense if you listen and yes Karly, we are officially keeping you accountable) to do the interview. If you know Karly you know she doesn't do stuff inside the box so when we gave creative control we quickly realised anything was possible. And please note. This episode contains swear words.  So Karly rocks up to our house. We catch up (saaah fun), talk about our Merry apartment picnic happening later this same day (best kinda love fest), sit on the couch with our microphones ready and Karly throws in the topic of our conversation... SHADOWS. To be honest this was me in my head (it's Emma FYI)... I don't really even know what the term shadow means, I've heard it so much, I've read about it, but never ever have I thought about my shadows. Woah. WTAF am I gonna to say...  So it turns out I have lots in my shadows. Also turns out it feels bloody good talking about them and bringing them to the light.  Here's the stuff we talk about... We know you're going to get some gold from this podcast episode. Right now, we are both the most confident we've ever been and we're keen to keep this going and growing for the rest of our lives. So, let's talk, how to get more confident!  Because one believes in oneself, one doesn't try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn't need others' approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.― Lao Tzu Here's the stuff we talk about... What is confidence? What does it mean to be a confident person?  We share our personal stories. How Emma went from 'the shy' kid to becoming pretty darn confident in herself (hell yeah). How self-doubt, fear and a negative mind ruled for many years (and how it still comes and goes).  How Carla was pretty much born confident, how school bullies impacted her negatively. How her confidence became a mask to hide the hurt from the bullies.  The 3rd chakra, the solar plexus. What it is and the things we can do energetically and physically to unblock this chakra.  How hanging out with less confident people or more confident people can influence you. But it's your responsibility. What you can do to get more confident. These are real easy and do-able steps.  To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. - Ralph Waldo Emerson Links to stuff we talk about... YAY for live IRL podcasting.  Chatting to these amazing people, feeling the energy, the passion, the eye contact, the hugging after, etc etc. It wins! It makes podcasting oh so fun and meaningful. We're so grateful for each and every guest. We feel so excited to share them out to you, each and every week (except when we are busy or we forget, ooooopsie!). This is the stuff we talk about: Chemicals in skin care and the health damages they do to us. How Therese Kerr started The Divine Company. We chatted about all the amazing Divine products. This was super interesting as there was a heap of science behind it all. Therese knows a lot!  The importance of family. Conscious shift happening around the world. Especially with young women. How we can detox from chemicals. How to get them out of the system! And more! Ok, so we just got back from recording this podcast in the studio. Before that, we had coffee and delish brunch, before that we spent like 90 minutes surfing (well floating around, trying to catch waves and getting dumped), before that we did yoga.  Yeh... as you can imagine we are 100% in some kind of Merry bliss land and things get kinda cray cray in this episode. Whoops! But we're also 100% sure there are a couple of golden moments amongst the cray cray. Surely! This is what went down in Merry Land.... The Merry News update. We are in some kind of workflow river. It's pretty epic and we are way more organised than normal so this rocks.  GetMerry recipe app update. Becuase it's our fave project. Three words: Easter Chocolate Bundle.  Beauty and the Beast. How epic the movie was. We sing, just a little bit. Also how good that Disney added the multi-cultural and same-sex relationship aspect.  LOL moment Emma talks about her wedgie slide incident at White Water World. Haha. Actually such fun times! Minus the wedgie violation.    Merry Mantra of the week In this week's episode we talk about how the answer to everything is always to come back to gratitude BUT actually, this week's mantra is Comparison is the thief of joy. This little mantra has helped us in so many ways! Whether you compare your business, your body, your family, your job, your life etc. we have a few actions steps that will help. We also talk about our own experiences because guess what... it's super easy to fall back into comparing yourself. Even when you know it is thief of all good. Yahuh.  Super pumped to bring you even more #GetMerry podcasts yewww! Next week we are interviewing our good friend Marcus Pearce. I've been putting my hand up for too many things at work and had a much-needed convo with my mentor last week who gave me some invaluable advice in being strategic. About which opportunities I commit to and trying to look at the bigger picture and how it's going to benefit my future goals.  I would love to hear your thoughts on this and maybe some examples if you've got any? Oh this is a good one! Loved talked on this topic!  We used to be big YES YES YES people then we realised it was holding us back from what we really wanted. Then we turned into these NO people. Now we balance it all out and we take our time to make decisions.  Good one to listen to coz we all have so much going on in our lives.  Subscribe so you don't miss out! You can SUBSCRIBE on iTunes or Stitcher and if you LOVE the episode, give us a 5 star rating and write us a merry-filled review!  Merry Mantra of the week Gratitude is the game changer. Heck to the yeeeah! We were always taught to be polite and use our manners. We always expressed our thanks. BUT gratitude is where it's at. We 100% believe that adding gratitude to your life. Living it and breathing it will make your life better. We love this quote by Melody Beattie, we think it explains the power of gratitude so perfectly. "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. It's all about perspective really.  We're going through this thing called life and stuff happens to us and we make stuff happen. We can either CHOOSE to be grateful for all of it or we can choose to be angry, fearful, sad, negative, cynical.  What do you think? Do you practise gratitude? And when we say ALWAYS... there have been 2 episodes so far where we've titled them the Merry Mantra so yeah... always :D  We've actually written about this mantra before... and it really was and is a game changer. Look sideways.  In a (macadamia) nut shell: none of us are above or below ANYONE. No one is above or below you or me/us. We're all equal. We are all made of the same stuff (star dust to be exact... like we actually are), we all have something to learn from each other and something to share. Look sideways. Stop the comparison. Stop the judgement. There is no joy there.  Submit a question and WIN! The #GetMerry podcast is all about inspiring you to live a healthier and happier life. It's a weekly podcast (like a radio show) where we'll be sharing all things Merry. It's a great transition from #MerryBiz to #GetMerry as we take you through everything we're working on. We also take you through all the lessons we've picked up on during the week. We talk happiness, mindset shifts and life in general. Pretty sure we even get on the whole what is the meaning of life? topic (oh oh, haha). Yes, we ramble, yes we laugh and yes it's a whole lotta MERRY! So if you're looking for a dose of something magical each week, #GetMerry is the show for you! It's the perfect show to listen to if you want to start adding more positivity into your life. We also end each episode with a Merrymaker Mantra. And this week's is: Follow your freaking bliss. You've heard us bang on about this before. Yah?!  It's an adapted mantra by the philosopher, Joseph Campbell. And it's all kinds of magical epic. "Follow your bliss and doors will open where there were once only walls." Holy shit that quote changed our lives forever and ever. We first heard it when we watched the documentary, Finding Joe. Seriously, that is compulsory watching for anyone reading this. You will love it. But first, finish this and listen to the podcast! When we started Merrymakers, there was no strategy, no business in mind, no nothing really. We just had this something telling us to start writing and creating recipes. So we did! We were having so much fun doing it, so we did more of it. And we learned about blogging. And social media. And newsletters. Oh my! Then we watched Finding Joe. And then we realised that Merrymakers... well, that was our bliss. And this whole Follow Your Bliss concept was pretty freaking epic. And apparently revolutionary to us (even though it was all over the internet!) and so we started sharing this message out to our Instagram followers. We'd share it once a day, almost. Follow your bliss. Do what you love! Follow the fun! All the inspirational quotes you can think of. And do not scoff... we know you love them too! At this time we were still working in our full-time soul-sucking government desk jobs, seriously we need a shorter name to describe it. But the message was loud and clear. Merrymakers was our bliss and if we followed it, if we kept going, opportunities would flow right on in. It turned into the perfect kick up the butt too. We'd been sharing the quotes, inspiring others to do what they love, but here we were still working those soul-sucking jobs and not REALLY following our bliss. Not really living our truth. We were good at speaking the speak but... doing the do? We weren't there yet. So the quitting of our jobs came about just 1 and a half years into our Merrymaker journey with no plan, no strategy, no money and a fat mortgage and USA trip booked in!  What were we thinking? We weren't! But Joseph Campbell said that if we followed it... doors would open. (Yes, we're a bit cray cray). Oh and that they did! The day we quit our jobs, a sponsorship...
