Identifying Patterns of Abuse: A Situational Awareness Approach

What warning signs did we all miss? In the wake of Gabby Petito's tragic murder by her fiancé Brian Laundrie, situational awareness expert Kelly Sayre joins host Maria MacMullin to fulfill Joe Petito's call to action—using his daughter's story as a learning tool to help others recognize the dangerous patterns of abuse before they turn deadly.Kelly breaks down abusive behaviors through the lens of situational awareness, defining it as "using all your senses and intuition to notice when something is off in your environment, understanding what it means to your safety, and taking action." This framework provides listeners with practical tools to identify potentially dangerous relationships, whether in their own lives or those of loved ones. The conversation examines specific red flags from Gabby's relationship: her tendency to take all blame during the Moab police encounter, Brian's tactics to isolate her from friends and family, his financial abuse that undermined her independence, and the controlling behaviors disguised as concern. Most importantly, Kelly emphasizes that severe domestic violence rarely begins with physical attacks—it starts with psychological manipulation that gradually escalates.Perhaps most powerful is the discussion about intuition as a biological safety mechanism. "Intuition is not a prankster," Kelly explains. "It's simply trying to let you know something in your environment is off." Both experts encourage listeners to trust that gut feeling when something doesn't seem right in a relationship, as this instinct exists to preserve our safety.Whether you're concerned about your own relationship or trying to support someone you love, this episode offers crucial insights into recognizing abuse patterns early. Trust your intuition, maintain your boundaries, and remember that knowledge is power when it comes to personal safety. Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it—it could save a life.

We're honored to welcome Nichole Schmidt to Toxic today — a friend of the pod and a fierce advocate for survivors, especially young survivors of dating violence. In 2021, her 22-year-old daughter, Gabby Petito, was murdered by her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, during what was supposed to be an idyllic cross-country van trip — and instead became a national tragedy. This past February, Netflix released American Murder: Gabby Petito, a docuseries featuring never-before-seen details about how Gabby's story unfolded. Ultimately, she became yet another preventable victim of dating violence, strangulation — and, yes, femicide. Just two weeks before her death, police in Moab, Utah, pulled the couple over after a witness saw Brian hit Gabby. Despite clear signs of abuse — and officers even identifying it as assault — Laundrie wasn't arrested. Instead, they named Gabby the primary aggressor and gave Brian a hotel room usually reserved for domestic violence victims. The incident laid bare just how much law enforcement — and society — still doesn't understand about abuser tactics. A little over a month later, Brian strangled Gabby to death in Wyoming. He later scribbled a confession in a notebook before dying by suicide — because, of course, accountability was never on his itinerary. Today, Nichole shares what life has been like since Gabby's death — and how she's working to keep her daughter's memory alive, one survivor at a time. We want to hear from you. Do you have a story we need to discuss or a guest we should feature? Visit us at ToxicThePodcast.com and share your story. If you're experiencing abuse or domestic violence, please reach out to someone you trust. You can also connect with a trained advocate near you through DomesticShelters.org. Finally, help us keep this conversation going. Share an episode of Toxic with someone also outraged by the relentless epidemic of violence against women. **Discussion begins at 5:00**Gabby Petito was born and raised in Blue Point, New York and was the oldest of 7 children in a blended family.  While attending Bayport Blue Point High School, she met Brian Laundrie.  After graduating in 2017, they reconnected and began dating in 2019.  Eventually, they decided to move to Northpoint, Fl to live with Brian's parents.  In 2020 they got engaged, and Gabby purchased a Ford Transit Connect - which the couple converted into a sleeper van.  On July 2, 2021 they set off from New York on a 4 month roadtrip through national parks.  Gabby was hoping to take off as a content creator, and was vlogging the journey on her YouTube and Instagram accounts about #vanlife.  On August 12, 2021 police responded to a 911 call in Moab, Utah. The caller had reported seeing a man attacking a girl in a van driving by.  The couple was separated and the police felt that Brian was the victim and no charges were pressed.  They sent him to a domestic abuse hotel for the night, and she stayed in the van. The couple then proceeded on their trip. On August 25 Gabby made a final post to Instagram and then stopped responding to texts or phone calls.  On September 11, Gabby's mother filed a missing persons report in Suffolk County, NY.  When police went to the Laundries as part of a wellness check, they learned that Brian had returned home in Gabby's van, without her.  But the Laundries had already hired an attorney and refused to cooperate with the police investigation.  The investigation let them to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, where Gabby's phone was last used.  On September 19, 3 weeks after the investigation had begun, her body was found in the park.  After the discovery of her body, a search warrant was issued on the Laundrie home, and it is then that we learn Brian Laundrie had disappeared days prior, last seen going on a hike.  A month later, on October 20, Brian Laundrie's parents discover his body in Carlton Reserve, a nature preserve near their home.  With him, they find a backpack that contains a journal with a partial confession – Brian claimed that he had killed Gabby, but only because she had a freak accident and was suffering and asked him to put her out of his misery.  The coroner eventually ruled Brian Laundrie's cause of death to be suicide by GSW.  However, a number of inconsistencies in the crime scene, and his parent's unwillingness to assist in the search for Gabby Petito, have led many online to speculate that Brian Laundrie is not actually dead, and that his parents helped him fake his death to cover it up.Send us a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA

But when the 22-year-old suddenly stopped posting, her family began to fear the worst. Gabby's high-profile disappearance sparked an unprecedented social media movement to find her. An unstoppable onslaught of amateur sleuths and armchair detectives exposed a story no one was prepared to ignore, as the world hung on each development in the nationwide search for Gabby, her fiance, and the truth. The death of Gabby Petito was a highly publicized and tragic event that occurred in 2021. They documented their journey on social media platforms, capturing the attention of many.On September 11, 2021, Gabby's mother reported her missing to the police, expressing concern as she had not heard from Gabby in several days. The search for Gabby intensified, and her story gained widespread media coverage. The public became invested in the case, with social media campaigns and appeals for information. On September 19, 2021, human remains were discovered in a remote area of the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming, consistent with the description of Gabby Petito. Later, the Teton County Coroner's Office officially confirmed the remains belonged to Gabby, ruling her death a homicide. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation.Gabby's fiancé, Brian Laundrie, returned to Florida on September 1 without Gabby. He became a person of interest in the case but disappeared shortly after Gabby was reported missing. A massive search was launched for Brian, but he remained elusive, leading to speculation and intense media scrutiny.Tragically, the investigation took a significant turn when Brian's remains were found in October 2021 in the Carlton Reserve, a nature reserve in Sarasota County, Florida. The cause of his death was determined to be suicide. In the aftermath of Gabby's murder, her family filed several lawsuits against not only the Laundrie family, but also the the two officers in MOAB who responded to the call. The Moab Police Department has recently responded to the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Gabby Petito's family, who allege negligence in their handling of a domestic dispute between Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. The police department's motion to dismiss the lawsuit, filed in April 2024, argues that the judicial system should not be used as a substitute for a GoFundMe campaign, suggesting that the lawsuit is more about seeking financial gain than justice. They also contend that their officers acted with kindness, respect, and empathy during their interaction with Petito and Laundrie on August 12, 2021, and that they cannot be held responsible for predicting the tragic events that occurred weeks later and miles away.In response, Gabby Petito's father, Joseph Petito, has strongly refuted the police department's claims, emphasizing that the lawsuit is not about money but about accountability and preventing future tragedies. He asserts that the Moab Police Department's failure to properly address the situation put his daughter at risk and that their refusal to learn from their mistakes endangers the public.(commercial at 9:28)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Moab cops blast Gabby Petito family's $50m lawsuit as a 'substitute GoFundMe campaign' and demand it be thrown out | The US Sun (the-sun.com)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Justice for Gabby: Parents Turn Tragedy into a Mission After Uncovering Troubling Messages What began as a dream adventure for Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie ended in tragedy, sparking a nationwide movement against domestic violence. Almost four years after her murder, Petito's parents continue to uncover new insights into her relationship with Laundrie, revealing chilling warning signs. Gabby Petito, a young woman from Blue Point, New York, set off on a road trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, in 2021. With aspirations of becoming a travel influencer, she documented their journey through social media. However, behind the carefully curated images and videos, her relationship with Laundrie was deteriorating. The couple's travels took a dark turn in Moab, Utah, when a witness called police after seeing a man striking a woman. Bodycam footage from the encounter showed a distressed Petito, while police ultimately determined she was the aggressor. Officers separated the couple for the night, but no arrests were made, and they continued their trip. On August 27, Petito's mother, Nichole Schmidt, received an unusual text from Gabby's phone: “Can you help Stan? I keep getting his voicemails and missed calls.” Gabby never referred to her grandfather by his first name, raising red flags. Another text mentioned they were heading to Yosemite instead of Yellowstone, adding to the family's concerns. Days later, Laundrie returned alone to his parents' home in North Port, Florida, driving Petito's van. Her family reported her missing on September 11, launching a nationwide search. On September 19, investigators discovered her body in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. An autopsy later confirmed she died from strangulation. “They said we found remains consistent with your daughter,” Gabby's stepfather, Jim Schmidt, recalled in an interview with ABC's 20/20. “I remember I was crying, and I said you have to be sure.” Laundrie quickly became the sole person of interest but refused to speak with police. Shortly after, his parents reported him missing. Following an intense 37-day manhunt, his remains were found in a Florida nature reserve. Authorities determined he had died by suicide, and a notebook recovered from the scene contained his confession to Petito's killing. Recently, Petito's parents revealed previously unseen text messages and letters they discovered on her phone after her death. In one message, Gabby pleaded with Laundrie: “Don't try to control me because it only makes me mad. I love you so much, but it's the way you speak to me that hurts me the most.” A letter she wrote to him read, “Brian, you know how much I love you. Just please stop crying and stop calling me names. You in pain is killing me.” These discoveries paint a clearer picture of the emotional turmoil she endured. "I liked Brian," Nichole Schmidt admitted in a recent interview. "He was very soft-spoken. He would sit and do art with the girls… He got along with her brother, TJ, and he just seemed like a nice person." The couple's relationship intensified when they moved to Florida to live with Laundrie's parents. They got engaged in 2020, but Gabby's family only learned about it through Facebook. “I'm an old-school person,” her father, Joe Petito, said. “You go up to the father… ask them for their hand in marriage. That didn't happen.” With their wedding plans delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, they decided to embark on their van-life adventure instead. What started as an exciting journey ended in a devastating tragedy that shook the nation. In the aftermath of their loss, Petito's family channeled their grief into advocacy, founding the Gabby Petito Foundation. The organization works to combat domestic violence and support the search for missing persons. “She made a difference,” Joe Petito said. “People saw a beautiful soul, and she had an impact that changed the lives of a lot of people and the world. There's no more amazing legacy that you could have." If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. In a letter labeled "burn after reading," Roberta Laundrie expressed unconditional love for her son, Brian, stating she would support him regardless of circumstances. The letter included offers to assist in extreme situations, such as helping to "dispose of a body" with "a shovel and garbage bags," and baking "a cake with a file in it" if he were jailed. Roberta later explained that the letter was written months before Gabby Petito's death, during a strained period in her relationship with Brian, and that its content was intended as a lighthearted attempt to reconnect, referencing inside jokes and children's books they shared. She emphasized that the phrases were not meant to be taken literally and were unrelated to the subsequent tragic events.(commercial at 6:33)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Gabby Petito's family attorney wants the letter he says Brian Laundrie's mom wrote him offering to bury a body, with inscription 'burn after reading' | CNN

The "burn after reading" letter sent by Roberta Laundrie to her son, Brian, is deeply troubling, not just for its eerie phrasing but for what it suggests about the Laundrie family's attitude toward accountability. While Roberta has insisted that the letter was written well before Gabby Petito's murder and was merely an inside joke, the specific wording—offering to "dispose of a body" and referencing prison breaks—cannot be brushed off as lighthearted banter. The fact that she felt the need to explicitly write “burn after reading” implies she knew the contents were incriminating, or at the very least, inappropriate. If this was truly a harmless letter meant to cheer up Brian, why include such dark imagery? Even if taken at face value, it reveals a level of enabling and coddling that raises serious ethical concerns. It's one thing to love your child unconditionally; it's another to imply, even jokingly, that you would cover up a crime for them.Beyond the letter itself, the Laundries' behavior in the aftermath of Gabby Petito's murder only adds to the suspicion surrounding them. Their lack of cooperation with law enforcement, refusal to communicate with Petito's grieving family, and overall secrecy cast a dark shadow over their credibility. If Roberta's letter was truly innocent, why did they fight so hard in court to keep it from being released? Their actions suggest a pattern of protecting Brian at all costs rather than standing on the side of justice. Whether or not the letter was written before Gabby's death, the language used and the family's subsequent behavior make it difficult to believe that it was purely an unfortunate coincidence. It speaks to a broader issue of misplaced loyalty, where shielding a son from consequences takes precedence over doing what is morally right.in this episode, we get a look at that letter.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Brian Laundrie's mom's chilling 'burn after reading' note revealed (nypost.c

Roberta Laundrie's public explanation of her "burn after reading" letter raises significant concerns about her credibility and the family's overall transparency. She claims the letter, which includes unsettling offers to assist in disposing of a body and breaking out of jail, was penned months before Gabby Petito's tragic death and was intended as a lighthearted attempt to reconnect with her son during a strained period in their relationship. However, the morbid content of the letter, coupled with the explicit instruction to destroy it after reading, casts doubt on her assertion that it was merely a benign, inside joke. The timing and context of the letter's release, found in Brian's backpack alongside his remains, further complicate the narrative and suggest a possible attempt to obscure the truth. Moreover, the Laundrie family's pattern of behavior throughout the investigation into Gabby Petito's disappearance and death has been marked by secrecy and a lack of cooperation. Their refusal to communicate with the Petito family during the critical period when Gabby was missing, combined with legal maneuvers to prevent the letter's disclosure, indicates a deliberate effort to withhold information. Roberta's explanation appears to be a retrospective justification aimed at mitigating public backlash rather than a genuine clarification. This pattern of obfuscation not only undermines the family's credibility but also exacerbates the emotional distress experienced by Gabby Petito's grieving loved ones.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Brian Laundrie's mom breaks silence on 'burn after reading' letter | Fox News
