An international guest on the podcast today with Ryan Walsh, Founder and CEO of Valqari. The Australian Drone industry is expanding and the recent capital raise by Carbonix is a perfect example. Carbonix recently raised  AU$6.3 million in late seed funding.  The round, which was oversubscribed, includes listed Defence aerospace manufacturer Quickstep Holdings Limited (ASX: QHL) (“Quickstep”) who invested $1M - adding a strategic dimension to the mix of individuals and small funds taking up the opportunity.  This week, Mirragin's Andrew Crowe had a chat with Chief Technology Officer and Founder of Carbonix, Dario Valenza. There are many and far use cases for drones in many applications. One that has had recently and gain public attention due to unfortunate helicopter accidents is the use of drones across various aspects of power provision, particularly in string powerlines. How do we trust trusted systems? How do we assure systems? What ethics base do we use? During the recent World of Drones and Robotics Congress, Andrew Crowe had a long chat with Kate Devitt. Kate is the Chief Scientist of the Trusted Autonomous Systems Defence Cooperative Research Centre (TASDCRC), located here in Brisbane, Queensland. Kate is hugely experienced with unmanned and autonomous systems, as both the TASDCRC Chief Scientist and Adjunct Associate Professor at UQ. Kate uses her expertise in philosophy (epistemology, cognitive science and ethics) to interrogate and build autonomous systems that incorporate ethical, legal, and regulatory structures to achieve social license to operate and trusted adoption. A 'drone testing range', formally known as the UAS Flight Test Range is on target to have the first UAS in the air in October of this year! A potential game changer for the Australian drone ecosystem, it's going to allow the testing of UAS in a cost-effective, purpose built, industry focused facility in the Queensland town of Cloncurry.
