Time sure is moving, but has a sufficient amount of it passed for us to start considering the next generation of PlayStation console? According to two reliable leakers, the answer is yes: Sony is very much aiming to get PS6 out in 2027. This makes sense by historical standards -- seven years between consoles is fairly normal, if not even a little slow -- but it really doesn't feel like we need this thing. Or do we? By 2027, who knows what our ecosystem might look like. Let's discuss! Plus: Legendary Tecmo director and producer Tomonobu Itagakai has sadly passed away, Sony-owned studio Bluepoint is hiring for a mysterious third-person action project, San Diego Studio appears primed to finally bring its smash-hit MLB: The Show series to PC, Ghost of Yotei is selling at parity with Ghost of Tsushima, we could have very easily gotten a mobile The Last of Us game, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Do we like to partake in New Game+, when applicable? With Xbox's displacement as a hardware competitor, is Sony and Nintendo's long-standing rivalry primed to be reignited? Why don't we talk more about the fighting scene? Will Dustin regale us with some of his Japanese language skills? In this episode, we open the creaking doors of the courtroom to the world of the supernatural. From Adele's eerily unsellable former home to 16th-century French tenants suing over ghostly disturbances, we explore how hauntings have—quite literally—made their case in court. Why do ghost stories grip us so tightly? Perhaps it's because they invade our safest spaces—our homes—and then, to make sense of the chaos, we drag them before the law.We delve into notorious legal disputes where phantoms played leading roles—from 19th-century mediums manipulating wills, to infamous murder houses cloaked in silence, to the one time New York's highest court ruled that a house was legally haunted. Whether it's a spectral milkmaid in Derbyshire or a ghost with pig-like eyes, the courtroom becomes the ultimate ghost story arena—where belief, fear, and justice meet.So grab your gavel (and your sage) as we ask: Can a ghost reduce your rent? Should sellers disclose hauntings? And most chillingly—what happens when the law declares a haunting... real?My Special Guest Is Naomi Ryan  Naomi Ryan is a criminal barrister and lover of all things macabre. After qualifying with a Masters in Law from St Catherine's College, Oxford, she taught criminal law to undergraduates at St Hilda's College Oxford and University College London before embarking on her career as a criminal barrister, where she both prosecuted and defended. She later moved into the Civil Service, where she has advised an array of senior government and legal figures on matters of constitutional, public and criminal law. She continues to work as an advisory lawyer whilst regularly giving talks about the darker side of legal history. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Uncover real-life legal battles involving haunted houses—from 16th-century France to modern-day England and the US2. This flaw allows malicious actors to send requests that bypass essential security measures.Next.js, a popular React framework used by companies like TikTok, Netflix, and Uber, utilizes middleware components for authentication and authorization. The vulnerability stems from the framework's handling of the "x-middleware-subrequest" header, which normally prevents infinite loops in middleware processing. Attackers can manipulate this header to bypass the entire middleware execution chain. The vulnerability affects Next.js versions prior to 15.2.3, 14.2.25, 13.5.9, and 12.3.5. Users are strongly advised to upgrade to patched versions immediately. Notably, the flaw only impacts self-hosted Next.js applications using "next start" with "output: standalone." Applications hosted on Vercel and Netlify, or deployed as static exports, are not affected. As a temporary mitigation, blocking external user requests containing the "x-middleware-subrequest" header is recommended.Hackers Can Now Weaponize AI Coding Assistants Through Hidden Configuration Ruleshttps://www.pillar.security/blog/new-vulnerability-in-github-copilot-and-cursor-how-hackers-can-weaponize-code-agentsResearchers Uncover Dangerous "Rules File Backdoor" Attack Targeting GitHub Copilot and CursorIn a groundbreaking discovery, cybersecurity researchers from Pillar Security have identified a critical vulnerability in popular AI coding assistants that could potentially compromise software development processes worldwide. The newly unveiled attack vector, dubbed the "Rules File Backdoor," allows malicious actors to silently inject harmful code instructions into AI-powered code editors like GitHub Copilot and Cursor. The vulnerability exploits a fundamental trust mechanism in AI coding tools: configuration files that guide code generation. These "rules files," typically used to define coding standards and project architectures, can be manipulated using sophisticated techniques including invisible Unicode characters and complex linguistic patterns.According to the research, nearly 97% of enterprise developers now use generative AI coding tools, making this attack particularly alarming. By embedding carefully crafted prompts within seemingly innocent configuration files, attackers can essentially reprogram AI assistants to generate code with hidden vulnerabilities or malicious backdoors. The attack mechanism is particularly insidious. Researchers demonstrated that attackers could:* Override security controls* Generate intentionally vulnerable code* Create pathways for data exfiltration* Establish long-term persistent threats across software projectsWhen tested, the researchers showed how an attacker could inject a malicious script into an HTML file without any visible indicators in the AI's response, making detection extremely challenging for developers and security teams. Both Cursor and GitHub have thus far maintained that the responsibility for reviewing AI-generated code lies with users, highlighting the critical need for heightened vigilance in AI-assisted development environments.Pillar Security recommends several mitigation strategies:* Conducting thorough audits of existing rule files* Implementing strict validation processes for AI configuration files* Deploying specialized detection tools* Maintaining rigorous manual code reviewsAs AI becomes increasingly integrated into software development, this research serves as a crucial warning about the expanding attack surfaces created by artificial intelligence technologies.Hacker Claims Oracle Cloud Data Theft, Company Refutes Breachhttps://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/oracle-denies-data-breach-after-hacker-claims-theft-of-6-million-data-records/Threat Actor Offers Stolen Data on Hacking Forum, Seeks Ransom or Zero-Day ExploitsOracle has firmly denied allegations of a data breach after a threat actor known as rose87168 claimed to have stolen 6 million data records from the company's Cloud federated Single Sign-On (SSO) login servers. The threat actor, posting on the BreachForums hacking forum, asserts they accessed Oracle Cloud servers approximately 40 days ago and exfiltrated data from the US2 and EM2 cloud regions. The purported stolen data includes encrypted SSO passwords, Java Keystore files, key files, and enterprise manager JPS keys.Oracle categorically rejected the breach claims, stating, "There has been no breach of Oracle Cloud. The published credentials are not for the Oracle Cloud. No Oracle Cloud customers experienced a breach or lost any data."To substantiate their claims, the hacker shared an Internet Archive URL indicating they uploaded a text file containing their ProtonMail email address to the login.us2.oraclecloud.com server. The threat actor also suggested that SSO passwords, while encrypted, could be decrypted using available files. The hacker's demands are multifaceted: they are selling the allegedly stolen data for an undisclosed price or seeking zero-day exploits. Additionally, they proposed offering partial data removal for companies willing to pay a specific amount to protect their employees' information. In a provocative move, rose87168 claimed to have emailed Oracle, demanding 100,000 Monero (XMR) in exchange for breach details. According to the threat actor, Oracle refused the offer after requesting comprehensive information for fixing and patching the vulnerability. The threat actor alleges that Oracle Cloud servers are running a vulnerable version with a public CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) that currently lacks a public proof-of-concept or exploit.Chinese Hackers Infiltrate Asian Telco, Maintain Undetected Network Access for Four Yearshttps://www.sygnia.co/threat-reports-and-advisories/weaver-ant-tracking-a-china-nexus-cyber-espionage-operation/Sophisticated Espionage Campaign Exploits Vulnerable Home RoutersCybersecurity researchers from Sygnia have uncovered a sophisticated four-year cyber espionage campaign by Chinese state-backed hackers targeting a major Asian telecommunications company. The threat actor, dubbed "Weaver Ant," demonstrated extraordinary persistence and technical sophistication in maintaining undetected access to the victim's network. The attack began through a strategic compromise of home routers manufactured by Zyxel, which served as the initial entry point into the telecommunications provider's environment. Sygnia attributed the campaign to Chinese actors based on multiple indicators, including the specific targeting, campaign objectives, hacker working hours, and the use of the China Chopper web shell—a tool frequently employed by Chinese hacking groups.Oren Biderman, Sygnia's incident response leader, described the threat actors as "incredibly dangerous and persistent," emphasizing their primary goal of infiltrating critical infrastructure and collecting sensitive information. The hackers demonstrated remarkable adaptability, continuously evolving their tactics to maintain network access and evade detection.A key tactic in the attack involved operational relay box (ORB) networks, a sophisticated infrastructure comprising compromised virtual private servers, Internet of Things devices, and routers. By leveraging an ORB network primarily composed of compromised Zyxel routers from Southeast Asian telecom providers, the hackers effectively concealed their attack infrastructure and enabled cross-network targeting. The researchers initially discovered the campaign during the final stages of a separate forensic investigation, when they noticed suspicious account restoration and encountered a web shell variant deployed on a long-compromised server. Further investigation revealed multiple layers of web shells that allowed the hackers to move laterally within the network while remaining undetected.Sygnia's analysis suggests the campaign's ultimate objective was long-term espionage, enabling continuous information collection and potential future strategic operations. The hackers' ability to maintain access for four years, despite repeated elimination attempts, underscores the sophisticated nature of state-sponsored cyber intrusions.Cloudflare Launches Aggressive Security Measure: Shutting Down HTTP Ports for API Accesshttps://blog.cloudflare.com/https-only-for-cloudflare-apis-shutting-the-door-on-cleartext-traffic/Company Takes Bold Step to Prevent Potential Data ExposuresCloudflare has announced a comprehensive security initiative to completely eliminate unencrypted HTTP traffic for its API endpoints, marking a significant advancement in protecting sensitive digital communications. The move comes as part of the company's ongoing commitment to enhancing internet security by closing cleartext communication channels that could potentially expose critical information.Starting immediately, any attempts to connect to api.cloudflare.com using unencrypted HTTP will be entirely rejected, rather than simply redirected. This approach addresses a critical security vulnerability where sensitive information like API tokens could be intercepted during initial connection attempts, even before a secure redirect could occur. The decision stems from a critical observation that initial plaintext HTTP requests can expose sensitive data to network intermediaries, including internet service providers, Wi-Fi hotspot providers, and potential malicious actors. By closing HTTP ports entirely, Cloudflare prevents the transport layer connection from being established, effectively blocking any potential data exposure before it can occur.Notably, the company plans to extend this feature to its customers, allowing them to opt-in to HTTPS-only traffic for their websites by the last quarter of 2025. This will provide users with an additional layer of security at no extra cost. While the implementation presents challenges—with approximately 2-3% of requests still coming over plaintext HTTP from "likely human" clients and over 16% from automated sources—Cloudflare has developed sophisticated technical solutions to manage the transition. The company has leveraged tools like Tubular to intelligently manage IP addresses and network connections, ensuring minimal disruption to existing services. The move is part of Cloudflare's broader mission to make the internet more secure, with the company emphasizing that security features should be accessible to all users without additional charges. Developers and users of Cloudflare's API will need to ensure they are using HTTPS connections exclusively moving forward. This is a public episode. It might be the sense of achievement from driving results, it might be in terms of developing people or developing yourself, or it might be for the money. In the context of involving everyone, ask yourself: do you understand the people you work with enough? Different people have different reasons for coming to work and  are motivated by various factors. What are their needs? Keywords1.Greetings can be very different in the UK and US2.British humor V.S American humor3.Is there any difference in lifestyle between UK and US? 4.How does TJ feel spending 7 years to get his PhD?Well, it's not quite... we're not enemies, right? You assume that everything is normal and that you know what's happening. But really underneath, there's some kind of problem, some kind of complication is maybe a better word that you don't expect.Yeah, can you give us some like specific examples so that we can get a feel of it?Yeah, one very good example that I've come across several times because it's such a habit of mine is greetings. So in the UK is perfectly normal, especially in the north of the UK where I'm from, to say, are you all right as a greeting, right? Are you all right? That's not just in the north. I hear people say that a lot in London or around London as well. I that used to confuse me because in my book, when you ask people, are you all right as a way of greeting, it sounds like you assume that I'm ill.Right. And so the Americans feel the same way as you. It implies there's something wrong. Like, are you okay as if they've had an accident or fallen over or something has happened or they look very ill or something, I remember just 2 or 3 days ago, I went to a social event. And I saw somebody that I had met once before and I thought I'll go and talk to him, and I walked up to him and said, “are you all right?”, and he looked at me, and he said I'm fine. What's wrong? You know, as if there was some big thing I needed to talk to him about. Then I had to explain to him. No no, I'm just saying hi, right? That's the way it goes. It's interesting because you get different advice from different Americans you know. So Americans they don't say are you all right? They say how are you? how's it going? something like this. Yeah. But then what you say to that, do you actually reply and say how you feel or do you say nothing?I think it's just fine, right? In British culture is when they ask you how are you, they expect you to say I'm fine. Like I'm okay, I'm doing well. They don't expect you to tell them exactly how you feel, even if you feel bad that day, even if you feel a bit under the weather, you don't say, in British culture you don't like announced that because that was not expected.Yeah, there's maybe let's say like ten, maybe if I'm lucky 20 people in the world, when they ask me if I'm all right or if they ask me how it's going, that I will say to them a genuine answer, I'll say it's going okay or I'll say not so good today, but I'll live or something. But one thing that's very common in the UK is that you give some kind of comical answer or something that's a little bit unusual difference. So I remember I went into the office and saw one of the members of staff and they asked me how I was, and I said I must be fine because my heart is still beating. And they look very confused by that. I feel like in the UK you can get away with these kind of slightly maybe eccentric responses. The British eccentric it's... Just like British humor is very very dry, I think that's the thing. British humor does not translate very well into American humor. I don't think to the general public, maybe in certain crowds, but certainly not in general public. It's true that the Americans seem to really like to signpost that they're making a joke.So everybody knows, you know, from the tone of voice, from the body language that it's big and it's a joke and it's exciting. Whereas, yeah, the English kind of like to slide the jokes in to normal conversation and say something counter intuitive. And it's like a landmine.

Historically, echo analysis has been too expensive or inaccessible for many heart disease patients to receive the care they need. Today's guests, James Hare and Dr. Carolyn Lam of Us2.ai, are changing that.  Us2 is a decision support tool that uses artificial intelligence to automate reading any DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine), anytime, from any device.  It is FDA-cleared, vendor-agnostic, and delivers peer-reviewed results that are shown to be interchangeable with expert human sonographers.  Us2's mission is to give everyone full access to their heart health with easy, mobile echo analysis. Today, James and Dr. Lam discuss why echos can be tricky even for medical experts to get right, how Us2 supports both physician and patient use across a variety of cardiac conditions and the healthcare democratization movement.  Notable Quotes “It should be accessible to everybody to look at the heart. Why shouldn't you be able to look at the heart and see you've got a hole in your heart or a part of the heart that's not working well or a valve is not working well? I mean, we should be able to do that everywhere.” – Dr. Carolyn Lam (04:02) “There's a lot of well merited skepticism about new AI technologies and the burden is on us to prove that what we have done is useful and it works. But once we push beyond that, once people actually see it, it's just the best feeling in the world. And the reality is that everybody in this, as skeptical as they are, everyone knows what the future is. It's just a matter of how soon we're gonna get there.” – James Hare (18:37) In This Episode (03:36) Us2's origins  (15:20) How it works (19:40) Use cases and the intricacies of heart failure that Us2 can identify  (25:38) Us2 uses beyond heart failure (31:30) Us2's commercial outlook  (33:25) The biggest challenge during Us2's development (35:13) Finding a shared language across business, medicine and tech (39:05) The future of Us2 in hospitals and physician offices Our Guests Us2.ai CEO and Co-founder James Hare previously served as the Co-founder and President of eDreams, which IPO'd in 2014 and has become one of the world's most successful e-commerce sites. Before starting Us2, James worked at organizations including EFI, UbiSoft and Netscape, and earned his MBA from Stanford and BA from Harvard. Dr. Carolyn Lam is the Co-founder & Non-Exec Head of Medical Affairs, and is a tenured Professor at Duke-National University in Singapore, where she founded and continues to run the first Women's Heart Clinic. Dr. Lam received her Masters from the Mayo Clinic, graduated from the Stanford Executive Program and then earned her PhD from the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands. Scorching inflation hits 40 year high in the US

Economy Watch

Kia ora,Welcome to Thursday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news that it is all about inflation and its pressure on central banks.First up today, the headline American CPI inflation rate rose sharply in June by +9.1% and well above the expected +8.8%. That's their largest rise since 1981. But their core inflation rate actually fell to 5.9% in June from 6.0% in May. That shows that most of the inflation pressure is coming from petrol (+60% year-on-year) and food (+10%). The May to June food price rises were less than the prior month. So really, its an energy story. In the US, food makes up 13.4% of their index, and fuel 7.3% (3.5% for household use, and 3.8% for petrol). For New Zealand, food makes up 18.5% of our index, while fuels 7.5% (4.0% for household use, and 3.5% for petrol). We tax ourselves a lot more for petrol, so their change just seems a very big increase, not that they are actually spending more than us. The New Zealand CPI data for the June quarter is due out on Monday, and analysts expect ours to rise from 6.9%. Actual forecasts aren't released yet but they will undoubtedly be above 7%.But with the headline rate so high, that does to seem to open the door to a full +1.0% rate hike when they meet next to review rates on Thursday, July 28 NZT.The latest US Fed Beige Book reports an economy ticking over at a good level, but with signs of a coming slowdown. Most Districts reported that consumer spending moderated as higher food and petrol prices reduced households' discretionary income. Due to continued low inventory levels, new car sales remained sluggish. As we have noted in previous months, the US Government deficit is being repaired fast. In the past 12 months, it is now down to just over -US$1 tln in the year to June (-4.1% of GDP), and a far cry from the -US2.8 tln deficit in the year to September 2021 (-12.3% of GDP). By any measure that is an impressively fast repair. The monthly deficit in June 2022 was less than half the June 2021 level. Spending is down -US$900 bln while tax receipts from a healthy economy are up almost +US$800 bln for the year to June. There was another US Treasury bond auction, well supported, this one for their 30 year maturity. The median yield today was 3.05%, down from 3.11% at the prior equivalent event 5 weeks ago.We have noted it before, but keep an eye on the energy crisis in Texas. Blackouts seem close now.The Canadian central bank surprised markets earlier today and took the plunge with a full +1.0% rate hike, taking their policy rate to 2.50%. Most analysts had expected an outsized +75% bps jump, but their central bank Canuks surprised them still. Canada's inflation rate is running at 7.7%. It's a rate change than makes yesterday's RBNZ hike look small by comparison.Meanwhile, the IMF is warning G20 treasurers to tighten their budgets and their central banks to push up interest rates to prevent high inflation from becoming entrenched.China reported a fatter trade surplus in June as exports rose almost +18% year-on-year, the most in five months as logistics constraints eased, especially in the Shanghai region and a catch-up in delays were eased. Meanwhile imports grew barely, up just +1% and far less than the almost +4% rise expected, suggesting this June surge is really just a one-off. Still the June +US$98 bln surplus was impressive. In the Chinese property sector the stresses just go on and on. Buyers involved in 35 projects across 22 cities have decided to stop paying mortgages as of last week due to project delays and a drop in real estate prices. Others say it could be what is happening in up to 100 projects. This will sharply raise the bad debt risks for the exposed banks. On top of the regional bank run we have noted over the past few days, calls are out to address a 'crisis of confidence' in China's banks, banking system, and what might be unexpected corruption among banking managers. Their stumbling economy is putting huge pressure on regional banks, it seems. The RBNZ and the Bank of Canada weren't the only central bank to raise rates yesterday in the face of the threat inflation poses. The Bank of Korea raised its base rate, also by +50 bps to 2.25%, the largest increase since the bank adopted interest rates as its primary policy tool in 1999, as it stepped up its battle against inflation now running at a 23-year high. The move followed five previous +25 bps hikes, and was the rate markets expected. In Australia, ANZ has confirmed it is in talks to buy SME accounting software company MYOB from private equity giant KKR, but says an agreement is yet to be reached. The UST 10yr yield starts today down at 2.91% and another -4 bps slip from yesterday. The price of gold will open today at US$1740/oz which is +US$14 higher than this time yesterday. And oil prices are little-changed at just over US$94/bbl in the US, while the international Brent price is just under US$98/bbl.The Kiwi dollar will open today a little firmer from this time yesterday at 61.6 USc. Against the Australian dollar we are still at 90.6 AUc. Against the euro we are little-changed at 61 euro cents. That means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 70.6 and a minor firming. The bitcoin price returned to almost at the same level as this time yesterday at US$19,873. Volatility over the past 24 hours however has been high at +/-3.0%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. And get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston and we'll do this again tomorrow.
