Carbon, industry advocacy and greater need for education in agriculture came into focus during Weekly Grill podcast host, Kerry's Lonergan's lengthy chat this week with large scale Queensland beef producer MDH's Julie McDonald.   Julie wears many hats within the family-owned MDH cattle business. In addition to providing an update on MDH's cattle operations spread across 14 properties in North, Central and southern Queensland totalling some 3.4 million hectares, she shares her thoughts on carbon – saying while its represents an opportunity for the industry, there is still a lot of work to be done. Julie said it was important for the industry to have government understanding of the difference between carbon and methane. Carbon and the associated impositions on the beef industry needed to be carefully thought out, and agriculture needs to be weary that it is not simply burdened by additional costs. MDH is using AgForce's carbon assessment tool AgCare, and is very happy with it, she says in this week's Weekly Grill.   The Weekly Grill is brought to readers and listeners by Elders and Rhinogard by Zoetis.

While a lot of us know her as the president of AgForce, and her many board roles including the ABC, and the National Farmers Federation, it's what she did decades ago that I've loved digging up. Georgie is one of the pioneers of agri-tourism. Growing up the land, she was just 17 when she set up a farm stay business on her family farm, later establishing national farm tourism body. After working in the city for a while, she eventually moved to her husband's farm, taking her fax machine with her, and used it to run her business, working remotely in the 80s and 90s well before Covid made it cool! Georgie has raised three kids on the land  who are now all grown up, and she takes us through how she's managed it all. In 2015, taking his knowledge from CHR he left and went to Agforce Transport Services, where he spent 5 more years leading a sales team and in 2019, started a full-scale agricultural logistics division. It was during this time that he saw there was a need for more focused transportation and logistics solutions specific to the agriculture industry. Most companies like CHR and Agforce primarily operate on the distribution side of the supply chain. He saw a need to build out a complimentary solution that would give them a competitive advantage. In 2020, during the global pandemic with worldwide shutdowns, John and his business partner, Scott Erickson, took the leap of faith and started their own company to bridge the gap they saw in the industry. Heartland Logistics Group, LLC was created as a full service 3PL with the idea to build a total supply chain solution while delivering the best experience to customers, carriers, and employees. Founded in faith the company grew from 1 employee to 24 employees by the end of its first year, servicing 190 clients, and moving 10,000 shipments: generating over $20 million in revenue. In its second year, Heartland successfully supported over 240 clients, grew to 45 team members, 29,000 shipments, and over $52 million generated in revenue.  Website: https://shiphlg.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/jkuhl1/ Connect and tag me at:https://www.instagram.com/realangelabradford/You can subscribe to my YouTube Channel herehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDU9L55higX03TQgq1IT_qQFeel free to leave a review on all major platforms to help get the word out and change more lives!
