In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, master data storyteller Sam Knowles is joined by Alice Wallbank, a professional support lawyer for the law firm Shoosmiths, whose clients include Mercedes-Benz, Octopus Ventures, and Travelodge. The company also specialises in working for businesses in both the property and banking sector.   The Financial Times has garlanded Shoosmiths as “one of Europe's most innovative law firms”, and Alice's pioneering role at the company – focused on privacy, data, and increasingly AI – is symptomatic of a business in the vanguard of a profession catching up with the broadest implications of technology.   At the start of this year, Alice co-hosted an excellent ‘data insights' conference – naturally hybrid, both in the room and online – which featured a keynote from Austrian activist and lawyer, Max Schrems. Schrems is famous for his successful campaigns against Facebook (and Meta) for their violations of European data privacy laws.   Before joining Shoosmiths, Alice spent six years as the principal legal counsel for the cyber and information security division of the leading technology business, QinetiQ.    Alice is a passionate advocate of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), describing it “as a good thing for data privacy – without a shadow of a doubt”. Although first introduced in 2016 and in place since 2018, it has its origins in a 1995 directive, designed to protect the rights and freedoms of individuals from Big Tech. Alice believes this showed “remarkable foresight”.   One of the very few people in the UK, Europe, and the world to have read all 90,000 words of the EU's AI Act, artificial intelligence gives Alice that fabled reaction to trench warfare of “a combination of boredom and terror”. There are huge potential upsides – such as radiography diagnostics – and massive downsides from a system that is “at heart a self-limiting black box” dealing in “biases in, biases out”.   And in a Data Malarkey exclusive, Alice is our first guest in more than 40 episodes … to sing. She dons her white stilettos, dances round her handbag, and turns the clock back to 1984 for a tuneful rendition of Rockwell's dancefloor smash, Somebody's Watching Me – for Alice, an insightful foreshadowing of data privacy issues 40 years into the future.   EXTERNAL LINKS   Shoosmiths home page – https://www.shoosmiths.com   Alice's profile on the Shoosmiths' site – https://www.shoosmiths.com/people/cvdetails/alice-wallbank   Alice's article on Ashley Madison – https://www.grip.globalrelay.com/could-the-ashley-madison-data-breach-happen-today/   Another blog from Alice, this time on the environmental credentials of GDPR.   The EU AI Act – all 90,000 words of it – here   Rockwell's Somebody's Watching Me from 1984 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YvAYIJSSZY     To find out what kind of data storyteller you are, complete our data storytelling scorecard at https://data-storytelling.scoreapp.com. On this episode of HR Like a Boss we are joined by Pete Schramm! Hear him discuss how he went from growing up on a farm, to building robots for the Army, to creating Lattitude, a professional development program. About Pete Pete Schramm loves bringing people together! Schramm is an entrepreneur, motivator, TEDx speaker, author, and experienced leader focused on guiding diverse teams to solve complex problems. Schramm grew up working on his family's farm near Pittsburgh, PA where he honed his tireless work ethic and sparked his passion for connecting people. He graduated from Sewickley Academy, then attended Catholic Univ as an athlete with an academic focus on mechanical engineering for undergrad and grad school. Schramm studied abroad in Honk Kong in 2013. Schramm began his professional career at the world's largest defense contractor in the Operations Leadership Development Program (OLDP). While at Lockheed Martin, Schramm held roles as a proposal analyst, environmental sustainability engineer, supervisor, supplier quality, and manufacturing engineer. He led an effort to design and implement Florida's largest solar carport in 2017. After the two-year rotational program, he supported the design and build of missile launchers and shipbuilding programs as the lead quality engineer and risk program manager, respectively. While at Lockheed Martin, Schramm learned the value of professional mentorship - top-down and peer-to-peer. He had a front-row experience of the value of meaningful relationships and intentional people-helping-people. In 2018, Schramm went to MTEQ (now QinetiQ) where he led a team of more than 100 engineers and scientists along with a $30M+ portfolio of multiple programs - building robots for the Army that “keep the good guys safe from far away.” This is where Schramm was able to lead by example and prioritize people-over-process to unlock new levels of productivity and profitability resulting in a culture of cohesive collaboration. In 2020, Schramm left Corporate America to focus on his startup – Lattitude (previously Lattus). The concept came to fruition in March 2018 after Schramm realized that his one-on-one mentoring and matchmaking began filling up 15+ hours each week. Lattus is the one-stop-shop, human connection platform that cultivates engagement through conversations. Schramm compares Lattus to “the intersection of LinkedIn, Zoom, Calendly, and Google Docs with flares of Survey Monkey.” Lattus is helping organizations attract, engage, and retain top talent through structured programs including, new employee onboarding, mentorship, DEI, and 360 feedback, mental health, and succession planning. Schramm is a trained and certified Lean Six Sigma Blackbelt, Agile HR Practitioner, Scrum Master, and Project Management Professional (PMP). Pete continues to stay active by playing basketball, hiking, and cycling (#SchrammFarm on Peloton). He loves traveling (30+ countries so far) and is always learning new things - oftentimes in group settings to bring more people together. Schramm received a 30 Under 30 award and he is an active member of the Pittsburgh Rotary Club, PHRA, and on the Sewickley Academy Board of Trustees. Pete's Purpose: Life is what you make of it - why not make it amazing for yourself and those around you by inspiring potential and igniting the fire inside of others. Let's level the playing field to provide equitable access to unlimited opportunity to put the right people in the right places to accelerate the solutions of tomorrow. About HR Like a Boss HR Like a Boss centers around the concept that with the right passion to be and think different, HR and business professionals can do amazingly awesome HR. People who do HR like a boss understand business concepts, what makes people tick, and how to approach HR as more than a compliance or cost center. Find out more about this event on our website: https://bit.ly/3vZXPlO While less directly threatening in the public mind than ‘killer robots', the use of AI in military decision-making presents key challenges as well as enormous advantages. Increasing human oversight over the technology itself will not prevent inadvertent (let alone intentional) misuse. The presenters argue that trust at all levels (operators, commanders, political leaders and the public) is essential to the effective adoption of AI for military decision-making and explores key related questions. What does trust in AI actually entail? How can it be built and sustained in support of military decision-making? What changes are needed for a symbiotic relationship between human operators and artificial agents for future command? Christina Balis is the Global Campaign Director of Training and Mission Rehearsal at QinetiQ. Her 20 years' experience across both sides of the Atlantic encompasses consulting, industry and public policy settings, with particular focus on defence, global security and transatlantic relations. Flight tests of the full-scale 12-motor eVTOL demonstrator aircraft with a Tilt Propeller System (TPS) have been successful. Maker successfully completed its first hover test flight in December 2021 and since then the engineering team has focused on the development and testing of the systems needed for a full transition to horizontal flight. Errant drone briefly shuts down D.C. airport Air traffic was shut down at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for 45 minutes. There is no information about who was operating the drone, if it was taken down, or if it was retrieved.  The DHS told Congress that TSA has reported nearly 2,000 drone sightings near U.S. airports since 2021. Laser-Controlled Drones Can Evade Signal-Jamming Countermeasures The counter-drone technology that physically attacks rogue drones with a net or a projectile requires that you track the drone's movement. On the other hand, signal jamming doesn't require such precise tracking. But now British company QinetiQ has a way to remotely operate drones without the communication signals that can be jammed. The new system uses lasers or Free-Space Optical Communications (FSO, or FSOC) signals. In this months episode, we continue the theme of the IMechE engineering challenges focusing on the unmanned aerial system or UAS Challenge. The event is held in mid-July at the British Model Flying Association's national centre, Buckminster.  This event sees teams of university students design, build, test and fly an unmanned aircraft system scoring points across these different segments to win the competition.  So, while Helen was busy preparing for our live Formula Student podcast, the Institution's Young Members were out recording the highs and lows at UAS.   The University of Surrey were crowned grand champions this year, with an impressive combination of scoring across their reports and autonomous flights during the event, even recovering from a crash to have a fourth attempt at the release of the AirDropBox system.  Loughborough University only just missed out on the top spot due to a rather terminal crash, but they did manage to scoop up the majority of awards in Innovation, Design, Safety, and Operational Supportability. There was also a virtual competition where teams could submit their designs online in lieu of them being able to attend in person. This enabled international teams to compete and gain recognition for their work despite Covid restrictions.  Teams from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Greece secured some of these virtual competition awards with India's Team WRise from the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies in first place.   Stephen McLaughlin, YMB aerospace division representative and one of the UAS judges was on site, to talk with Paul Lloyd, Chair of the UAS Challenge, Phil Briggs, from QinetiQ one of the event sponsors, Kristina Lindon UAS project manager and one of the Imperial College London team members.   Useful Links: https://www.imeche.org/events/challenges/uas-challenge/about-uas-challenge https://www.imeche.org/events/challenges/uas-challenge/team-resources/video-recordings   We would love to hear your thoughts and comments on this episode and the IMechE Challenges. If you would like to get in touch email us at podcast@imeche.org You can find more information about the work of the IMechE at www.imeche.org

Your first CFO role will involve a big step change in responsibility and take you right to the edge of your comfort zone and beyond. You need to stay resilient in order to survive. Dr Russell Thackeray is a psychologist and psychotherapist who specialises in resilience and frequently coaches c-suite executives. He shares his expertise on the GrowCFO Show Dr Russell Thackeray started his career as a professional musician before a career in sales and marketing. he has been CEO of a law firm and founded a major training business. These days he operates an organisational development consultancy and coaching business. He has worked with a diverse range of organisations including Central and Local Government, the National Health Service, Mercedes Benz, GKN, The Guardian, Hyundai, QinetiQ and Asda as well as for Private Equity and Venture Capitalists. As an entrepreneur, he has grown a number of organisations and has worked in the investment space with a number of UK Private Equity companies, including some major UK universities, to help them build the best people to ‘ramp up' their investments. He is also a non-executive director of a number of digital businesses including lifestyle transformation and cruise travel companies. Is it difficult to stay resilient in your first CFO role? Russell believes there are many challenges faced by the first time CFO that will call upon the new CFO's resilience. As a new CFO you have been working hard to land your first chance to do the top job. You have aspired to the role for a long time, but its a massive step up. The fight to win the job was tough, but it's only the start. Now the really hard work starts, so yes its going to take all the resilience you have in order to survive and then thrive. Russell identifies two possible scenarios Scenario 1: You rise to the new challenge, and perform well. but find it really stretches you and overwhelm comes from the volume and variety of work you need to undertake and the need to operate at a whole new level Scenario 2: You perform poorly, you struggle with the huge range of new skills needed to do the top job. You were comfortable as head of the finance function, but the new role is a million miles from your comfort zone. You struggle to deal with your new senior colleagues, and overwhelm gets the better of you. How do you stay resilient in Scenario 1? A major issue in scenario 1 is that your personal time gets squeezed. You have little time to do personal development and your own training goes out the window. Your wellbeing is at risk from the overwhelm of your new responsibilities. To stay resilient you must: Learn to leave behind the job you did before, you can't afford to hang on to the safety security & comfort of the finance functionIf your new job is in the same company then make sure you have replaced yourself with a great number 2If your new job is in a different company then make sure the team around you is strong and capable to support youYou can't be the outward face of the company while still looking inward, so you must be ruthless and jettison what you brought with you.Avoid the familiar, throw yourself into the stuff you aren't good at. You will become good at it in time. You need a good mentor. We discussed mentoring in episode 5 of the GrowCFO Show Don't be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help isn't a sign of weaknessFind the natural rhythm of your job. The regular requirements of the job won't be apparent at first, you need time to settle in.Let your team do the technical stuff, you don't need to be the expert in everything How do you stay resilient in Scenario 2? The issue is you have bitten off way more than you can chew. You are drowning. You don't have all the skills to do the CFO role. Maybe you have been over promoted and shouldn't be doing the job. There's actually no harm in admitting this if it is the case. Not admitting it can be more dangerous,

When your marketing team is focusing on the channels rather than the primary asset, the content, you loose the ability to understand the quality of your leads coming from your site. You don't know what they have seen, where you think they are going, and why they are where they are. Being able to have a ledger of content consumption habits of this user and comparing that to where you want them to go and what others have found valuable, you really start to be able to drive customer journeys. In this podcast, Nick Edouard discusses the need for triggering content assets that are part of a journey to drive the bingeing habits of site visitors for greater engagement and giving them more control over the journey. We also answer the following questions:Why is Content Marketing software needed?Where does the Content Management System fit in?How do we bring content together that is spread throughout the web?Not all Content Marketing software is the same. If you buy a CMS, CRM, or Marketing Automation platform, there is a particular set of problems each is tasked to complete to be in that category, but that is not so in Content Marketing software. Near the end, we get into a topic that is near and dear to my heart, the interoperability of MarTech vendors and the need for a Knight's Round Table conference for beginning the conversation about how we can work together in harmony for the health of the stack and customers, rather than be in an arm's race and be competing with companies that we should not actually be competing with.Full Show: https://enterprisemarketer.com/podcasts/enterprise-marketer-podcast-conference/65-nick-edouard/Biography:Nick Edouard is Co-Founder, President, and CMO of LookBookHQ. There's also a close up look at the James Webb Space Telescope mirrors and we hear from veteran US pilot Wally Funk, who had the right stuff to become an astronaut in 1960 but is still waiting for her chance to go into space. It's another beautiful Monday (somewhere) and we've got the news of the last 2 weeks covered, and we're breaking it down for you. The news this week is, well, quite frankly kind of dark. Everything tells us we're in for a rough ride for the rest of the year, and it's only getting worse. If I sound a little funny, it's because I'm talking through a massive sinus infection and it's making me talk funny and stuffy.  Also the recording you hear is take 2 ... I had a major technology fail so we had to re-record, with less sadness. Topics Covered We are happy to report that Justin Beiber is in fact, not coming out of the closet and E! Online was only hacked by those wacky military hackers from the Syrian Electronic Army. Apparently they've been on quite the hacking spree of media outlets and even put a major - albeit brief - dent in the stock market! - http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/e-online-twitter-account-hacked-article-1.1335214 The US Department of Labor was hacked, in what appears to be a very targeted 'watering hole' attack aimed at Nuclear employees. The attackers, if the stories are true, burned an IE8 0-day on this one, and of course they are Chinese - http://www.eweek.com/security/zero-day-exploit-enabled-cyber-attack-on-us-labor-department/ Anonymous is threatening a massive attack against the White House (the political entity not the ...nevermind), Bank of America, Citibank and other targets on May 7th. Are these folks just becoming part of the 'background noise' of the Internet? Are security professionals just starting to become numb to the DDoS attacks? - http://pastebin.com/TyvAK20F Chinese hackers have apparently ransacked QinetiQ, a defense contractor with ties to global cyber intelligence operations, spooks, and other interesting things. Bloomberg's write-up was not kind to these guys - http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-05-01/china-cyberspies-outwit-u-s-stealing-military-secrets.html In the perfect illustration of the fact that insider threats are real a systems manager returned to the company he was no longer employed at and wreaked havok. Folks, there is no magic 1U box that will stop this sort of attack, be vigiland and have good auditing and processes! - http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9238874/Systems_manager_arrested_for_hacking_former_employer_39_s_network
