Controversy and conflict against the Bible is common and the scripture is dramatically clear when it defends itself. A big issue in the first century among Christians was race. Its no different today. Gary shows the error of racism as Galatians 3 teaches and he upholds the unity that the Church is to sustain. In our time the concept of unity has been tossed aside completely. God is not satisfied with thousands of Churches. Christ built one Church and it is that Church that Paul constantly and consistently persuaded people to be a part of. The outline for this series is below. Galatians Chapter 5

The key point in Galatians is that the Old Testament is no longer in effect and that we live under a law of liberty (Gal. 5:1). The Old Law was fulfilled and removed by Christ (Col. 2:14). This does not mean however that we are not under any law but rather a law of liberty as it is called in James 1:25 (Gal. 6:2). Paul forcefully and dramatically makes the point that if we take any one thing from the Old Testament to practice we are fallen from grace and that Jesus' death burial and resurrection will have no effect on us. So clearly we are to follow the New Testament and also notice that it is possible for one to fall from grace. These points are passionately developed in this powerful sermon that is sure to make you consider the significance of God's law and our adherence to it (1 Jn. 3:4) The series outline is: The Doctrine of Liberty Stated: Chapters 1-2 The Doctrine of Liberty Defended: Chapters 3-4 The Doctrine of Liberty Applied: Chapters 5-6 Thank you for listening. Living with regret can be troubling but the Bible has guidance that can make the unbearable bearable, enabling us to grow and thrive personally and work effectively in his vineyard. Paul is a great example and in this sermon Gary delves into how he got past regret. Remember Paul was a fierce enemy of the Church and was involved in imprisonment and murder yet he said that he lived in all good conscience throughout his life. How is that possible? Listen in and learn more. You are sure to be strengthened and less distracted by regret because of this lesson. That being said, if you have not obeyed the gospel your regret will always hang over your head because the guilt of your sins has not been accounted for. Getting past regret includes understanding and appreciating that past mistakes and rebellion are forgiven so verifying that you are saved by revisiting scripture and making sure you are justified is crucial to forgetting things of the past. Gary eloquently discusses this and walks us through how a person is saved. The love of God is free from the fear of regret (1 Jn. 4:18). We hope this sermon will lighten your load. The study of typology in the Bible is impressive. It proves that the Bible is inspired by God and that he planned his revelation to mankind. Skeptics who accuse the New Testament writers and Christians today of reinterpreting the Old Testament to fit their own theology should reconsider their position. The study of foreshadowing undeniably shows the unity and consistency of the text and its purpose. In this sermon Gary explains what typology is and discusses the meaning of the firstborn based on type and anti-type. The teaching of the firstborn includes the ideas of redemption and sanctification which have a direct significance to the lifestyle and salvation of Christians. You might want to take notes for this one and do some further study. This is rich material and we hope you will enjoy it. Thanks for listening!

    Faith is the Victory

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2019 45:24

Victory implies war. The conflict Christians are in is against worldliness which is sinfulness. The biblical definition of sin is breaking God's law (1 Jn. 3:4). Contrary to mainline religious thinking the Bible says we are under law today (Gal. 6:2; James 1:25; 2 Tim. 2:5). Colossians 2:14 says that Jesus took the law away nailing it to his cross. This refers to the Old Testament only and does not mean that we are not under any law today (Heb. 7:12; 8:7-8; 10:10, 16; Jer. 31:31; James 2:10). Most references to law or "the law" in the New Testament are identifying the Old Testament, these are emphasizing that the law of Moses is finished and we are under a law of grace now. With this background, Gary in this sermon talks about how we can live according to this law and be pleasing to God by faith in him. We hope this sermon will help you on your godly journey. The Due Order

Any procedure, organization or structure has a due order or it falls apart. Gary McDade was in the Navy in the Vietnam era and his good friend John Shannon (See a link to his YouTube channel below) was in the army. They understand what orders are and together brought their military viewpoint and expertise to this lesson. To follow the due order implies that no part of the order is omitted or substituted. Every Church has due orders that are found in their creeds, confessions of faith or its leadership. If a person or particular congregation associated with a group stops following the due order they may be expelled from the group. The Church of Christ is no different. Its due order is necessarily found in the New Testament. The Church of Christ is the Church of New Testament. If any of its congregations cease to follow the due order--the New Testament--then it ceases to be associated with the New Testament Church--Church of Christ. Adding to or taking away from the Bible is condemned by the Bible yet every denominational Church does just that (Deut. 4:2; Pbs. 30:6; Rev. 22:18-19; James Boyd of Bryan College). Does this seem o.k. to you? If so why? Let us know in the comments and thanks for listening!

    Disciples Called Christians

It makes sense that followers of Christ be called Christians. As the old time preacher said, "without Christ I ain't nothing"! Isaiah prophesied that God's people would be called by a new name (Isa. 62). This was fulfilled in Acts 11:26 when, "the disciples were called Christians first at Antioch." Gary McDade presents several characteristics of Christians the most obvious of which is that they "come to Christ". As Jesus began his famous Sermon on the Mount he sat down, as teachers used to do and his disciples came to him and he taught them. Jesus said, "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself" (John 12:32). Revelation 7:9 shows a picture of people from every nations praising Christ. Philippians chapter two says that every knee would bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of the father. This latter verse refers to everyone voluntarily confessing him, even those who are in rebellion against him. It will be undeniable to all that Jesus is Lord whether or not you follow him. The conquered ones may deny the superiority of their conqueror(s) but in that day everyone will acknowledge that Christ is Lord. We hope you find this sermon faith building and encouraging in your Christian walk. He begins in Song of Solomon, a book that shows the passionate love between two people who are developing a relationship. This sermon helps you take the love and respect you have to a higher level. Sure, you have a good thing going but what is it like at the pinnacle of a loving relationship and how can you know you are there and how can you keep it there? No doubt you will understand love from a more significant viewpoint after hearing this sermon. We hope you will enjoy it. Did you know that a happy marriage mirrors the relationship Jesus has with his Church? Yes, the Church is compared to a bride (Eph. 5:25-33). Do you believe he became saved based on his situation and actions? If so, do you think we can be saved in the same way he was saved? Not that Jesus will blind anyone with a bright light while traveling but rather, what was it that saved him and when was he considered in a saved state? Was he saved by grace only or faith only? He shows that Christ is the head of the Church and not any other person. Gary goes on to discuss differences between specific denominations and Pastors he has had discussions with and shows that they are following the doctrine of their denominations oversight or else positions they hold that are clearly Bible contradictions. There is really no surprise that this occurs. A prominent position held by many is that every denomination removes and/or adds verses to the Bible so they can teach their own brand of Christianity. Though not surprising it is appalling! It is no casual thing to delete or add to God's Word. Would you agree? If it is o.k. then one passage one would have to remove is Revelation 22:18-19. This passage condemns anyone who adds to or takes away from the Bible! Let that not be us! The Church of Christ is different than any other Church. How so, and does it really matter? This sermon answers these questions and part 2 as well. That the Church of Christ is different matters a great deal more than most people realize and this sermon makes it clear in no uncertain terms. A primary difference is that the Church of Christ is vital to salvation whereas all other Churches are not and almost all would agree. A second difference is that the Church of Christ is the New Testament Church. It is clear that very other Church is not found in the New Testament. These bold statements are defended in this sermon as it lays out 8 ways the Church of Christ is different. We recommend taking notes for this 2 part sermon and reviewing them to verify the conclusion that the Church of Christ is different, that it is vital to salvation and is the only Church that is so. Slavery is a despicable blight on civilization, yet it exists. What can be done about it? That good question deserves to be answered. It is a geopolitical question and as such governments have the God given responsibility to deal with it properly. There are three institutions (human organizational structures) that God created for mankind. They are, the home, government and the Church. They appear in scripture in that order. All three have authority to govern themselves as they see fit and are responsible to God for how they are governed. The guide for their organization and governance is the New Testament and each will give an account for their principles and actions (Col. 2:14; Gal. 3:24; Heb. 8:6-13, Romans 13:1-7; Eph. 1:20-23; 5:22-6:4; Heb. 13:17). Colosians 2:8 says, "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." The New Testament has consistent, unified, specific teaching. Moving away from it spoils our faith. It certainly is possible to understand this teaching and everyone can agree what the meaning of the text is. The issue is accepting what it says. The problem of division between Churches is not understanding the text or interpreting it differently but rather accepting or rejecting it. For example one professor at Bryan College in Dayton Tennessee stated that every denomination ignores passages in the Bible so they can teach their own brand of Christianity. This can be verified by speaking with Church leaders about specific verses and hear their response. Expect to hear phrases from them such as; "that verse is error", "That is what it says but its not what it means", "We don't believe that", "There is not sufficient manuscript evident to justify that verse being in the Bible", "We follow our creed book" etc.  The big problem comes when philosophers, and false teachers try to influence you to conform to their dogma rather than encourage you to grasp the meaning of the text. In this episode Gary shows the significance of this problem, specific problematic examples and how to protect yourself from negative influences. If you have questions or want to add to the discussion. We appreciate your participation.

    Can't Obey God!

Would you obey God if you could? Jesus taught that not only can you obey him but we must obey him and that those that love him will obey him (Matthew 11:28-30; John 14:15; 12:48; Hebrews 5:8-9). The hardest thing for anyone to do in life is to give up what we want and do what someone else wants us to do. When we put ourselves before God we cannot obey the Gospel. Listen to Gary talk about people who cannot obey the Gospel. Lets make sure we aren't one of them! He also discusses what it means to obey the Gospel. A very important lesson for us all.

What are the best translations? Is it acceptable to use a translation? Can we be sure that we have God's word when using a translation? These questions and more are addressed in this episode. Gary begins by showing that translations are authorized by God because Jesus used a translation and then continues a rich study on the subject. He discusses manuscript evidence in the original languages and how we can be sure we have the content of the original documents. He also discusses the first English translations and the hardships associated with producing them.  He also discusses modern translations including the New International Version. One of Gary's professors was on the NIV's translation committee. This being the case Gary has special insight on the validity of the NIV. We hope you will enjoy this engaging study.

The Old Testament is a foreshadowing of the New Testament. There are many people, worship practices, and even situations in the Old Testament that correlate to New Testament teaching. This speaks to the Bible being a unit. In this introductory lesson (in a class setting), Gary simplifies what biblical typology is and discuss how Adam and Jesus are similar. Comments made by students have been edited out since they are inaudible. We hope you enjoy this study of Bible Typology "101".  As always your comments and questions are welcome.

We are held accountable to God's wishes whether or not we know what they are! In this episode Gary uses an Old Testament example to show the reality of this truth and then shows how it applies to the decline of the home in America. Broken homes are all too common. Marriage is not respected like it once was and should be. Society has forgotten how God would have the home. Gary lays out what the Bible teaches about a proper marriage and what makes a strong home. We hope you will benefit from this discussion.

    Truth

Pilot asked Jesus, "What is truth?" Previously Jesus said, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" (John 17:17). Notice that truth sanctifies. James 1:18 says, "Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures." We are made Christians when we are born again (John 3:3-5). Psalms 145:18 says, "The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth." We understand that calling on the Lord and being reborn go hand in hand. Being baptized is the way we call on him. Ananias to Saul to be baptized to have his sins washed away, "calling on the name of the Lord" (Acts 22:16). Gary develops this topic and explains the above verses showing that the Truth is the Bible and that followers of Christ are baptized and faithful to him. We hope you will be encouraged by this sermon and share it with others.

    What Shall We Have Therefore?

This is not a selfish question, it shows self interest. Peter asked this question to Jesus. He asked, "Behold we have forsaken all, and followed thee: what shall we have therefore" (Matthew 19:27)? Jesus didn't chide him at all but said, "Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first." In this sermon Gary shows what means to follow Christ so that we can have the benefits Jesus promises. Promises that last throughout eternity. We hope this sermon will encourage you to remain faithful to Christ and that if you are not following him properly you will begin anew in submissive commitment.  Thanks for listening!

    Periods of Bible History

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2019 49:38

The Bible is organized the way it is deliberately. It reflects the way God slowly and methodically revealed his will to mankind. It is an historical document partly chronological with thematic, episodic, poetic, proverbial, prophetic, and mandates interspersed. The Bible consistently portrays people as God's children and though fully mature in every human aspect the implication is that man could not immediately understand or at least appreciate sin's catastrophic effects or the magnitude of God's grace and power to save. No doubt man needed time to grasp redemption, otherwise God would have sent Christ into the world immediately after sin entered it and we could carry on as if nothing ever happened. Since this is not the case we are compelled to study the Bible to learn its significance, and it does take more than a casual read to understand it. Why would God require his book, which has the instructions to save the ones he loves so dearly, to be harder than a newspaper or children's' storybook to comprehend? Because he gave us a brain smart enough to grasp it and he expects us to use it! Hebrews 11:6 says every person has the responsibility to seek God. God is not impressed with intellect, or any other human attribute. He knows what he created. He wants our hearts, that is, our desire to be consumed with the thought of him. The greatest glory and honor that we can personally attain is to do things properly and only he knows how things are properly done. The Bible is his instruction book for proper living. With every accomplishment we make, whether spiritual or secular, we illustrate that his will is perfect and duplicatable. Our purpose is to glory him and live so as to be with him in eternity glorifying him forever. He one who truly loves us. (Isaiah 43:7, 1 Corinthians 6:20; Romans 15:6; Revelation 4:11)

In Acts 4:25 Peter quoted King David saying, "Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine vain things?" What this mean? Gary discusses modern examples of those who reject God's will as the standard for living. He shows that people, communities and nations that contradict or defy God display anger because they are in conflict with moral standards. He also shows thankfulness for local, national and foreign community leaders who have supported the Church's mission and gives personal examples of these encouraging people. Faith is the Victory

Faith is the victory for sure, but what is faith? The term has been hijacked by denominational doctrine and the true meaning of faith has been lost. By the true meaning I mean the biblical meaning. When most people think of faith they take it to mean a belief in something that has no real evidence to prove it actually exists. This view is in direct conflict with scripture. We are told to "Prove all things," and the very definition of faith is that evidence and substance of observable facts are the basis of faith (1 Thess. 5:21; Heb. 11:1). The idea of belief without evidence has caused a massive plethora of conflicting view points. It allows people to believe anything they want and believe that any conflict of doctrine or point of view will be overlooked by God. It also is the fundamental reason the debate regarding the opposition of religion and science. Faith versus fact says the atheists and denominational Christians agree. That shouldn't be! Truth is truth and the Word of God is truth (Jn. 17:17). Pentecost Pointers--Prophecies of the Church

The Church is not something that just popped up after the ascension of Jesus. It did not evolve by followers of Jesus simply coming together to form a community. The organization of the Church did not develop over time. The Church was prophesied extensively in the Old Testament. It is God's plan for redeeming man. It was brought into existence purposefully. In this sermon Gary lays out how the Bible for-tells of the Church and its establishment on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. He also shows why it is so important to be a member of the Church and how to become a member of it. This sermon is sure to increase your confidence as a Christian or kindly encourage you to become a member of the Church of Christ (Romans 16:16).

Adam and Christ--Adam is a type of Christ

The Bible is one unit rather than a jumbled collection of disjointed writings. The study of types and anti-types (among others) shows this to be true. The Old Testament is a foreshadow of the New Testament. It's been said that the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed. The foreshadows of the Christian Age, in the Old Testament are called types while anti-types refers to the realization of the primitive shadow. This lesson is a case in point. Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15 both speak of the similarities and differences between Adam and Jesus. The term type as used here is a biblical term and can be seen in Romans 5:14 in the English Standard Version. We hope you will enjoy this discussion, leave a comment and share it with someone.
