Hey, Lit listeners! It's old home week here at the podcast. Joining me are two Rock is Lit alumni who know a thing or two about chasing musical dreams and writing fiction that grooves with soul and grit: authors and musicians Peter McDade and Michael Amos Cody. In this special episode we're talking about their brand-new novels: Peter's ‘King Cal' and Michael's ‘Streets of Nashville'. Both of these fabulous novels ask what music costs, what it gives, and who gets to be heard. Also in the episode, we'll get to hear each author read from their books and maybe even settle the question Who makes the best frontman—or frontwoman—in rock history? *Trigger warning: We talk Taylor Swift in the last part of the episode. Swifties, listen with caution. I'm really excited to share this week's conversation that I had with Annika McDade of Canine Connection Coaching and Training. Annika is such a beautiful soul, and her approach to working with dogs, and their humans, is so resonant, so in alignment with the Mystic Dog Mama philosophy. She brings science and soul to her approach in training dogs, but also in supporting their humans to develop deeper connections with their canine companions, and ultimately with themselves. Annika and I talk about the concept of our dogs being a sacred mirror for us, and she shares her own experiences and journey of exploring how dogs serve as these mirrors, inviting us to deepen our connections to them and ourselves. She also shares some really useful tips and tricks that you can use to practically deal with some of your dog's reactive behaviours and anxiety. So, if you have been curious about how to deepen your relationship with your dog - mind, heart, and soul - then this is the episode for you! Connect with Annika McDade: Instagram: @canineconnectioncoaching Website: https://canineconnectioncoaching.ca If you would like me to do a short episode on a particular topic related to nourishing your dog - or yourself - mind, body, or soul, for my upcoming series, just send me a message on Instagram @mysticdogmama! I am also opening my books up for canine nutrition and wellness consultations! So, if you are curious about how fresh food can benefit your dog's health, or if your dog is struggling with a health condition, or you're already a fresh feeder but you would like to learn how to optimise your dog's diet, I'd love to help you! Some really beautiful feedback I have received from clients has been “this is the first time I've felt really heard by anyone in the veterinary field,” and “oh my goodness, this is so helpful, for the first time I feel really hopeful about my dog's health journey and our relationship”. So, if you need some help and support, just DM me on Instagram @mysticdogmama, and I'll be happy to have a chat! In today's conversation, I'm joined by my good friend Gordon McDade, who hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he still resides. In this tumultuous environment, Gordon felt called to become a pastor, mediator, and peacemaker in his divided city. Join us as Gordon shares the joys and struggles of cultivating peace, starting a church in the city's contested areas, and his harrowing experience of being caught in a bomb explosion. Brian McDade of Simon Property Group, Inc. recently shared insights at the Goldman Sachs 2023 US Financial Services Conference. McDade made clear that the company upholds expectations for potential acquisitions, saying, "we're cautious about adding assets because the bar is high, but we've been in the investment business for 30 years, and we're likely to continue to do so." While they remain selective, their track record over the past three decades signals an intention to continue sourcing individual asset opportunities. Activation of these assets as part of the broader portfolio illustrates the group's focus on enhancing the overall franchise and creatively deploying capital. Several key insights can be deduced from McDade's address: Performance: McDade highlighted the dynamic leasing environment the company navigates. They executed nearly 15 million square feet of leases, a new record for Simon Property Group, indicating adaptability to contemporary market expectations. The roster of new deals from diverse sectors—luxury retail, entertainment, food and beverages, health and wellness—suggests a sustained demand, reflecting the company's success in partnering with varied entities. Investments and growth strategy: Simon Property Group has continually engaged in optimizing its assets, a consistent strategic priority. McDade discussed redevelopment plans aimed to maximize space usage while serving rising demand from luxury retailers with new outlets. In an evolving market, the company remains vigilant to acquisitions that could ameliorate the overall franchise value. Commitment to earnings growth: The company's forecast indicates a growth rate of 3% for domestic property Net Operating Income over the next two years. This anticipated growth is attributed to the strong demand for space, the successful conversion of temporary leases to permanent ones, and healthy occupancy rates. Additionally, plans are in place to monetize OPI investments. Proceeds could potentially be used for stock buybacks, reducing debt, and further investments—the company's disciplined approach to capital allocation remains a defining characteristic of their investment ethos. McDade's commentary on Simon Property Group's future trajectory seems to lean towards a strategic mix of cautious acquisitions, space optimization, and an ongoing commitment to capital growth. The active engagement with property leasing and the focused, strategic allocation of future earnings underline the company's prudent yet proactive stance. We're starting Season 3 with a bang. Peter McDade is here to talk about his novel ‘Songs by Honeybird', a story that features a fictional integrated rock band from 1960s Macon, Georgia, that fell off the musical map after a fire killed the lead singer and guitarist and also . . . possibly, the band's African American drummer. To put it more succinctly, ‘Songs by Honeybird' is about a band, a romantic break-up, a Ph.D candidate in History's research, secrets, fathers, racism, Atlanta, the sixties and the repercussions the South still feels from that period, and . . . a talking dog. In the last segment of the episode Alan Light joins me to talk about musician, civil rights activist, and my fellow native-North Carolinian Nina Simone. The reason I've roped Alan into popping in is because one of the two main characters in ‘Songs by Honeybird', the piano-playing Nina, is named after the legendary artist. Alan is a rock critic, journalist, former editor-in-chief of ‘Spin' and ‘Vibe' magazines, a former senior writer at ‘Rolling Stone', and author of the book ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?', a biography of Nina Simone inspired by the Academy Award-nominated Netflix documentary of the same title. You won't want to miss our convo. Subscribe to my YouTube channel, @ChristyHallberg, to catch the upcoming YouTube-only full interview with Alan Light about Nina Simone.
