Where is your treasure? Where are your priorities? Are there any changes that need made to measure up to God's priority? In this episode, Jeff and Joe discuss: Learning from a young age to organize life around the Kingdom of God.Helping Christians to think Christianly around work, wealth, and capital.Introducing God's rest and peace into existence through our work.Using our wealth of restorative purposes for God's purpose of reconciliation.Understanding the basic principle of tithing then experiencing the joy of radical generosity beyond that. Key Takeaways: The Earth and everything in it is the Lord's. We are stewards of His trust. We are administrators to advance His purposes by developing and cultivating the wealth that He has placed in creation through hard work and creativity.Love God and love your neighbor as yourself - the two great commandments. Are your financial priorities honoring those principles? Two of the Ten Commandments are dedicated to the issue of property and how we honor God and others with it.That begins to provide a basis and a foundation for thinking about property. You can only be disillusioned if you have illusions. If we make wealth an idol, it will be an empty promise and will never deliver. "We use our money, our wealth, for restorative purposes, to advance God's purpose of reconciling all things to Jesus Christ. That's bringing all things into obedience and submission." — Rev. The social and political life of the church is in upheaval, as the currents of our polarized culture invade the Christian witness from both within and without. We desperately need a re-centering on the radical work of Jesus, even if this means ceding our securities and curating a holy suspicion of the world's power structures. In this lecture and in his new book, Making Christ Real, Dr. Sam Youngs argues that the ascension of Christ is an untapped resource in this regard, with invigorating implications for both spiritual formation and cultural engagement. Come and hear a new and powerful theological rendering on the meaning of the ascension for our everyday experience in difficult times.Samuel J. Youngs serves as an associate professor of Christian studies at Bryan College, adjunct professor of theology and church history at Richmont Graduate University, and the Dean of the Mission School of Ministry. He completed his PhD under Paul Janz and Oliver Davies at King's College London. His first book, The Way of the Kenotic Christ, was a major English monograph on the Christology of Jürgen Moltmann, and he has published on interreligious topics, theology and psychology, the thought of Martin Luther, the Old Saxon Heliand, natural theology, narrative pedagogy, kenosis, and staurology.Lecture begins at 2:54Q&A begins at 49:10

On today's program, Virginia megachurch pastor John Blanchard had sexual solicitation charges against him dropped, but protesters are showing up at his church and even the town's police chief thinks the case was mishandled. We'll have details. Also on today's program, Open Doors releases its annual Watch List, which tracks persecution of Christians around the world. This year's conclusions are bleak. We'll explain why. We begin today with a lawsuit involving Bryan College that has been dragging on for more than five years. In Closing: I mention fairly constantly here at MinistryWatch the importance of the Form 990. We use them every day here at MinsitryWatch, and we encourage donors to look at them before they give to a ministry. In the past we've done a webinar entitled “How To Find and Read A Form 990.” This webinar has proven so popular that we've repeated it three or four times over the past two years. And we're going to do it again. It will take place on Feb. 1 at 4 pm ET. Just check the daily MinistryWatch email for a link to the registration page. It's absolutely free, but you do need to register to get all the links and details. Don't forget to rate and leave a comment on your podcast app. Not only do these comments help us know what you're thinking so we can make improvements, but the more ratings and comments we have, your ratings help other people find us. That's a huge help to us, and it helps us expand our reach. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Jessica Eturralde, Anne Stych, Kim Roberts, Cheryl Mann Bacon, Emily McFarlan Miller, Dale Chamberlain, Adelle M. Banks, Jonathan Howe, Christina Darnell, and Rod Pitzer. A special thanks to The Christian Chronicle and ChurchLeaders.com for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.

THE JOY OF FAITHFUL AND CHEERFUL GIVING: WONDERFUL PRINCIPLES TO EMBRACE by Vincent Onyebuchi Nwankpa, PhD Few subjects generate more controversy and are addressed less frequently than that of Christian giving. Seldom does the church deal honestly or at all with this most important aspect of a believer ‘s discipleship in Christ. Dr. Nwankpa has sounded a clear and gracious voice in bringing this discussion to the table.Clearly written and down-to-earth, this book deals with how things really are in the church regarding money, giving, and living a life that honors the Lord and participates in His kingdom work. Vincent has done us a great favor by providing a sound biblical perspective on giving. His research, practical wisdom, and long experience as a seasoned follower of Jesus and minister of the gospel provide solid help for local and parachurch leaders.Be warned. Absorbing this book will challenge the reader's own values. Do we possess our riches, or do they possess us? One should be prepared to engage personally in order to gain the most benefit from this wonderful resource of information, perspective, and biblical insight. The book encourages people to know that we are all stewards of what God has given to us. We are to give our tithes and offerings as unto the Lord. We are to give according to how the Lord has prospered us, generously, bountifully, cheerfully, and not grudgingly or sparingly. When we giveto support God's work in the church, organizations, and individuals, God is the one who rewards us according to how we have given (I Corinthians 8 & 9:6-7). He or She who sows sparingly will in return reap sparingly, while he or she who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. There are good and bad motives of giving. We shouldn't give to get recognition or accolade. There will be no reward for such giving. Let's give in secret and God will reward us openly, good measure pressed together, overflowing. Let's give faithful and cheerful to the LordAuthor Bio: Dr. Vincent Onyebuchi Nwankpa holds a Bachelors of Theology degree from ECWA Theological Seminary Igbaja, Nigeria, a B. A. in Bible from Bryan College, Dayton, Tennessee, a Master of Arts degree from Biola University, a Master of Arts in Bible Translation, and a Ph. D. in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California. He is a missionary, a pastor, and a teacher. He loves the Lord, Jesus Christ, and loves to serve Him. Vincent is an elder and Board member at the Long Beach Alliance Church, California. He loves winning souls for Christ. He preaches at the Long Beach Rescue Mission once every month. He is a retired educator with Los Angeles Unified School District, but currently substitute teaches for Lynwood Unified School District. Dr. Nwankpa and his wife Chinyere started a ministry called Eternal Word Communication Ministries in 1994. Their mission field is in Nigeria, where they have Christian Schools that run from Pre-K to 12th grade. Their mission is to educate the children academically in light of the Word of God.He is a published author of Understanding Cultural Perspectives, God's Word and Missions: A Powerful Tool for Theologizing. As we increasingly attend to the ongoing mental health crisis, the church must raise its awareness of both psychology and trauma. Certainly, a well-informed church can contribute to meaningful healing in these contexts. But the church has also, historically, been a significant factor in traumatization. Christian teaching itself has contributed to psychological wounding on many fronts, and the church will struggle to become fully trauma-informed until it examines this reality. This presentation will discuss the dynamic interplay that can arise between religious doctrine and traumatizing circumstances, in the hope that such awareness will enable wisdom, compassion, and repentance.Samuel J. Today on the show we are talking to Justin Lonas of the Chalmers Center. The Chalmers Center was founded in 1999 by Dr. Brian Fikkert, the author of the best-selling book, 'When Helping Hurts.' At Chalmers, he coordinates the work behind books, articles, blog posts, online courses, video projects, small group curriculums, and produced by Chalmers' staff and ministry partners around the core concepts of a biblical framework for poverty alleviation and works with churches and organizations to help them apply these ideas in their ministry programs. Christian students are called, as are all Christians, to be “in the world but not of it." Yet doing so is much easier said than done, and sometimes much harder on university campuses. To help students in this, John Stonestreet and I discuss his and Brett Kunkle's recent book, A Practical Guide to Culture: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Today's World. John holds a master of arts in Christian thought from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (IL) where he graduated with honors. He currently serves as president of the Colson Center for Christian Worldview. John is a sought-after author and speaker on areas of faith and culture, theology, worldview, education and apologetics. He is the daily voice of BreakPoint, the nationally syndicated commentary on the culture founded by the late Chuck Colson. He is also the voice of the Point, a daily one-minute feature on worldview, apologetics and cultural issues. Prior to his current role, John worked in various capacities with Summit Ministries including Executive Director, overseeing the various aspects of the ministry to accomplish its mission of cultivating rising generations to resolutely champion a Biblical worldview. Prior to working with Summit and The Colson Center, John was on the teaching faculty of Bryan College where he helped to develop a Christian worldview sequence for the core curriculum, as well as several non-traditional educational opportunities. He also directed the Bryan College Worldview Team, an innovative educational initiative designed to teach students to analyze worldviews using the lens of popular media and culture. In addition to A Practical Guide to Culture: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Today's World, John has also authored Restoring All Things: God's Audacious Plan to Change the World through Ordinary People (with Warren Cole Smith), Same-Sex Marriage: A Thoughtful Approach to God's Design for Marriage (with Sean McDowell), and Making Sense of Your World: A Biblical Worldview (with W. Gary Phillips and William E. Brown). John and his wife Sarah, have three daughters and live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In this podcast we discuss: How to define “culture” and why we must understand culture How Christians should engage in and respond to culture How Christian students can celebrate the good on campus Why “Christian” is a great noun, but a horrible adjective The fallacy of chasing cultural relevance How higher education has become dehumanizing How students can flourish in this dehumanizing environment The two questions all students must learn to ask Practical ways students can discover their calling The unseen influence of cultural undercurrents How to overcome cultural influences and become virtuous people Why so many millennials are drawn to Socialism Resources mentioned during our conversation: A Practical Guide to Culture: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Today's World, by John Stonestreet and Brett Kunkle A Student's Guide to Culture, by John Stonestreet and Brett Kunkle The Aims of Education, by T.S.
