    What We Judge

When I am sharply judgmental of any other person, it's because I sense or see reflected in them some aspect of myself that I don't want to acknowledge. - Gabor Maté, In the Realm of Hungry GhostsIn this episode, we explore judgment and discernment and how that can support your ITC journey. Judgment is outward-focused: it is about what other people do, say, or think. Discernment, on the other hand, is your ability to know for yourself what is right and wrong, what you want or not, what works for you or doesn't, what you do or not do. It's about you. Before we talk about judgment, we want to be clear that judgment is very different from discernment. Judgment is the act of forming opinions or conclusions about something based on available information or personal beliefs. It often involves a quick assessment of a situation or a person's actions, which can sometimes lead to snap decisions or stereotypes. On the other hand, discernment involves a more thoughtful and deliberate approach to evaluating situations or people. It usually entails careful observation, analysis, and consideration of many different factors before arriving at a well-reasoned conclusion. Discernment emphasizes the use of critical thinking and open-mindedness, always looking to understand nuances and complexities to create a more balanced and insightful perspective. While judgment may be influenced by biases and preconceptions, discernment aims to rise above such limitations, fostering a more objective and accurate understanding of the world around us.Here's a little secret: what we judge says a lot about ourselves. It's like a mirror reflecting back our own beliefs, values, and insecurities. When we find ourselves pointing fingers or passing judgments, it's an opportunity to take a closer look within. You see, what triggers us or makes us critical often reveals the areas we need to work on ourselves. So instead of getting caught up in judgment, we invite you to approach it with curiosity and compassion. Let's use it as a chance for self-reflection and growth.Embracing this mindset allows us to learn more about ourselves, deepen our empathy, and foster greater understanding. So, the next time you catch yourself judging, remember, it's an invitation to explore your own inner landscape and become a kinder, more compassionate version of yourself.Want to become an ITC member and reorganize your brain? Also called a reading disability, dyslexia is a result of individual differences in areas of the brain that process language.Dyslexia is not due to problems with intelligence, hearing or vision. Most children with dyslexia can succeed in school with tutoring or a specialized education program. Sensory Systems, Our Senses, and The Brain

Sensory systems, our senses, and the brain are fascinating topics that encompass how we perceive and interact with the world around us. In the context of Sally Goddard Blythe's book, "Reflexes, Learning, and Behavior" these topics are explored in the context of child development and learning. In this episode, we talk about the sensory systems and processing, primitive reflexes, and lower brain development. Our sensory systems are responsible for gathering information from the environment and transmitting it to our brain for processing. We have five primary senses: sight (vision), hearing (audition), touch (somatosensation), taste (gustation), and smell (olfaction). We also talk about two more key systems; the vestibular (balance) and proprioceptive (sense of space) systems. These senses play a crucial role in how we perceive the world. The brain processes sensory information received from the senses. This processing involves interpreting the sensory inputs and forming a coherent perception of our surroundings. It's a complex and dynamic process that influences our perception of the world.Primitive reflexes are automatic, involuntary responses to specific sensory stimuli. They are often seen in infants and play a crucial role in early development. Understanding how reflexes develop and integrate into more complex sensory processing can shed light on cognitive and motor development. We touch on how these can "turn back on" making the processing of information very distorted and challenging day-to-day.Lastly, we connect it all back to brain development and how it ties it all together. While our first year of life is designated to setting this developmental foundation, it is important to revisit nervous system regulation regularly as we are living faster and more overwhelming lives.

In today's episode, we shine a spotlight on parents and tackle a common concern: the desire to "fix" their children's behavior. At In the Cortex, we receive numerous inquiries from well-meaning parents who are seeking solutions. However, we explain why our approach is not about "fixing kids."Many parents have tried everything – from time-outs and motivation boards to mainstream therapy, parenting courses, drop-off programs, and even medications. It's essential to note that these methods are not inherently ineffective, but they may be missing a crucial first step.We introduce the concept of a "bottom-up" approach, emphasizing the importance of considering the brain's role in behavior. Instead of solely addressing surface-level issues, we encourage parents to understand the underlying neurological and emotional factors that influence their children's actions.
