In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom continues his discussion with Dr. Thomas Verny, psychiatrist and best-selling author of The Embodied Mind. He explains the concept of the embodied mind as a form of “cellular intelligence.“ While traditional neuroscience regards mind as an emergent property of the physical brain, the embodied mind posits that mind is dependent on the entire body, not just the brain. He shares numerous examples of the embodied mind at work including: the relationship between gut health and mental health, the plaques that are thought to cause Alzheimer's disease originating in the liver, and the experience of heart transplant patients adopting characteristics of the donor's personality. Dr. Thomas R Verny is a psychiatrist, Founding President of APPPAH, the Association for Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health, Founding Editor-in Chief of the APPPAH Journal, author of 47 scientific papers and eight books including the international best seller, The Secret Life of the Unborn Child, published in 27 countries and the recently released, The Embodied Mind. The Embodied Mind shows how intelligence and consciousness—traits traditionally attributed to the brain alone—permeate our entire being. Whether or not we can consciously access a memory, the lived event has left an imprint on our cells and tissues. This is one reason why heart transplants carry memories of the donors. In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom talks with Dr. Thomas Verny, psychiatrist and best-selling author of The Embodied Mind. He shares how observations from his work with patients led him to the concept of the embodied mind—essentially how functions we normally associate only with the brain are dispersed throughout the cells of the body. One example of this is recalling memories formed before the age of two, which traditional neuroscience postulates is not possible. This may indicate that pre-natal and peri-natal cognition is much more robust than originally believed.Dr. Michelle chats with Barbara Decker, one of the pioneers in the childbirth education movement. With a half-century of experience, Barbara shares her journey, including being one of the firsts to certify as a Lamaze instructor (before it was even called Lamaze) and certify as a doula with Penny Simpkin. Barbara is a long-time HypnoBirthing® Instructor and expert in prenatal & perinatal psychology. She provides a simple breathing technique to help calm and settle our nervous system. Something we, and our babies, can all use during these stressful times. Barbara explains that babies are looking for a trusting relationship with their parent. A parent's job is to respond to their baby. Babies need a healthy attachment figure to be able to build a healthy psychological and emotional journey. Barbara shares that almost half of all pregnancies are unplanned or unwanted. Yet, parents can repair the relationship with their baby at any point in pregnancy. Barbara shares fascinating information regarding babies' awareness and consciousness in the womb. (This episode is a replay of episodes 49 & 50)"This [early nurture period] is critically, critically important for society as a whole and the health and the humanity that we are trying to bring into the world. When parenting in the womb becomes a normal phase, a part of, having a baby, we can change society as a whole."—Barbara Decker"When the mother is included in the decision making, the end result is not traumatization after the birth. It can prevent having an effect on the mother as long as she's part of that decision making. ...It's vital. And then our mothers are not going to have the challenges. We don't want mothers going to the birth, to the labor room, in fear that they are gonna have to do battle. We want them to know that they are going to be treated with respect."—Barbara DeckerAbout Barbara Decker:Barbara has been a childbirth educator for 50 years. She's a doula, a HypnoBirthing ®Practitioner, PALS supporter and Mentor, PALS Northwest Hospital Ambassador, and an avid supporter of APPPAH as membership and Mentor for the PPNE course. What brought Barbara to the field of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology was the knowledge she received after reading The Secret Life of the Unborn Child by Thomas Verny. That was almost 11 years ago and since that time has received certificates as a Prenatal Bonding Facilitator with B.O.N.D. The Greatest Pregnancy Ever.com program, trained for two and a half years, with Dr. Gerhard Schroth in the Prenatal Bonding (BA) Program (Only 12 trained to facilitate in the US.), and was one of the first graduates of the APPPAH PPNE Program. Her passion for educating parents on the importance of the preconception/gestational period led her to write a new paradigm in childbirth education - EmpoweringPregnancy.com. She has lectured throughout the United States, in India, and in Mexico on the need to teach these classes. It is imperative that we educate our birthing families on the intelligence of the baby growing in the womb. Our babies need to feel loved during the pregnancy, mothers need to manage their stressors in a safe way, and this program offers the tools to build a healthy relationship for the whole family. Parents that have attended the program feel that they are better prepared for their pregnancy, more bonded and attuned to the baby inside, plan for more natural births, an improved relationship with their partners, and feel more prepared for the postpartum experience. When you parent a baby in the womb, you know how to parent when the baby arrives. Attachment improves with a more conscious awareness of the needs of our babies for healthy minds and bodies. Pregnancy complications are lessened and parents make more informed choices in birthing facilities, practitioners, and interventions. It is time to empower our families with the knowledge that Emotional Intelligence is formed from conception through the nine months after the birth. Let's put the brakes on the violence in this country and “Build Babies, Not Jails”. March is birth psychology month. Michelle and Sarah Dickey, Pre & Perinatal Psychology Educator and fellow Calm Birth Teacher, discuss the consciousness of babies. Together they explore the importance of prenatal bonding to help babies in the womb feel welcome, loved, and safe, especially when as a parent you may be feeling stressed or overwhelmed. "It can just be as simple as if you have had a day that is overwhelming, that you just pause and maybe place your hand on your abdomen. Connect to your womb and just say, "Baby, I feel you. And I just want you to know today has been really overwhelming. I have felt really overwhelmed. But I want you to know that you are safe and I've got you. And, you don't need to worry about a thing. You're welcome. I love you." Like, that dialogue. How powerful that seemingly simple connection can be, but really helps prevent that stress response from being activated." —Sarah Dickey Learn more about APPPAH and Birth Psychology: https://birthpsychology.com/Sign up for APPPAH's Birth Psychology Summit FILM FESTIVAL March 2022: https://birthpsychologymonth.com/ About Sarah Dickey:Hi friends, it's Sarah. Welcome to “The Emergent Human where we explore Optimizing Health, Embodied Spirituality and Post Conventional Living. Ostrolenk speaks with Dr. Thomas R. Verny, a psychiatrist, writer, lecturer, and academic. Dr. Verny is the founder of PPPANA (now APPPAH), served as its President from 1983 to 1991. Verny was founding editor of the Pre- and Peri-Natal Psychology Journal of which he is presently Associate Editor. Dr. Verny is author of The Secret Life of the Unborn Child with John Kelly, Pre-Parenting with Pamela Weintraub. In total, he has written eight books including the recently published The Embodied Mind and over 47 scientific papers. Dr. Verny discusses what inspired him to pursue a career in Pre- and Peri-Natal Psychology, including clients' accounts of early memories that called into question mainstream thinking on the topic. Dr. Verny also details the disproportionate medical focus on the brain, while memories are also held throughout our body. Greater focus on the rest of the body will improve our capacity to understand and treat disease, introspection, and – ultimately – our free will. Has it been naïve (or even co-conspiratorial) of us to imagine that she has no mental life of consequence, or that her mental life is of no relevance to the developing child within? Based on a growing literature linking trauma and dissociation, this workshop will consider the possibility that dissociation is sometimes used by first mothers as a defense against impending separation and loss. Further, we will consider whether such dissociation is perceived by the baby both prenatally and at the time of birth. Finally, we will propose that the baby may mimic his first mother's emotional withdrawal, with implications not only for the attachment with adoptive parent(s), but also for the baby's optimal development. Could a strategy for enhancing connection between mother and prenate reduce dissociation in both parties, and set the stage for more affective vibrancy in the newborn, who is then perceived as more accessible by the adoptive parent(s)?https://prenatal-and-perinatal-healing-online-learning.teachable.com/p/adoption-and-the-baby-s-experiencePrenatal Bonding (BA) and the work of Gerhard Schroth: https://www.schroth-apv.com/PrenatalBondingBA.htmlAnother Podcast with Gerhard SchrothBook by Michael Trout: Audio Book through the Michigan Infant Mental Health AssociationHardcover

He holds graduate degrees from Vanderbilt and San Jose State Universities, graduating with honors. He has held university appointments as Honorary Faculty, Director of Clinical Training, International Lecturer, and Assistant Professor of Psychology. As an acknowledgment of his contributions to psychology, he received an honorary fellowship from the US National Science Foundation. Dr. Emerson practiced psychotherapy for 25 years, specializing in regression therapy, and lectured domestically and internationally on these topics. Dr. Emerson is is currently conducting training seminars, personal workshops, and finishing a book on trauma caused by the maternity care system as well as conducting training programs in the U.S., and Europe. In terms of treatment protocols, he is widely known for his innovative and pioneering treatment of trauma in unborn and newly born babies, and in children. He first published articles on infant and child treatment in the APPPAH journal in 1989, volume 3, issue 3, and in the IPA primal therapy journal (Aesthema) in 1987, issue 7. After researching infant treatment methods for decades, he subsequently researched applications to the adult trauma population, and discovered increased efficiency and success with adult patients. He found that adult patients who completed birth trauma protocols once a week for six months, reduced their psychotherapy completion rate by 3.2 years. In other words, resolving pre and perinatal trauma greatly reduced the need for psychotherapy, and also improved its efficacy when patients engaged in psychotherapy. Our twin dynamics series is in October. Michelle and Donna Seegers Abler, Pediatric Occupational Therapist, Pregnancy & Newborn Consultant, and Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology Educator, discuss the awareness and consciousness of babies. Donna shares amazing stories from her experience with babies in NICU. Together they explore how birth can impact babies and the implications of some of the protocols and practices within the medical system. Donna provides suggestions for parents to help support their baby in the NICU. Donna also shares about her new book, "Love me In: A Sacred Pregnancy Journal" which reflects leading-edge principles from the field of prenatal and perinatal psychology. It is a beautifully written and illustrated journal that guides expecting parents inward on a conscious journey through reflection, meditation, and heart-based practices. It is intended to empower self-connection to grow and nurture a healthy womb environment, giving babies their best start."As expecting parents, we have the power to go back to our innate spiritual selves and be a part of this bringing babies in, in a more complete way." —Donna Seegers AblerNotes:"In a different paper published by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (or RCOG, the United Kingdom's equivalent of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, or ACOG), they stated that it is possible induction may decrease the risk of stillbirth in older women. Using data from the United Kingdom, the authors estimated that if all pregnant people in the U.K. age 40 and older were induced at 39 weeks instead of 41 weeks, it would prevent 17 stillbirths per year. It would take 9,350 inductions at 39 weeks to prevent one stillbirth, and 4,750 inductions at 40 weeks to prevent seven stillbirths. (RCOG, 2013)." In this last episode of Michelle's series on the Calm Birth meditation program, Naima Bond shares with Michelle what brought her to Calm Birth and her journey to becoming a Calm Birth Teacher Trainer. Together they discuss the extreme value and flexibility of Calm Birth's Calm Parents meditations for postpartum and beyond. These meditations consist of Calm Parent, Calm with Baby, Breathfeeding, Energy Breathing, and Practice of Healing. Naima also stresses the importance of parents creating a plan for the postpartum period after the birth.*As a note, the breathfeeding meditation will soon be available in four different audio guides depending upon a parent's needs &/or preferences: breastfeeding, pumping milk, bottle feeding, and chestfeeding. "If you saw benefits while you were pregnant of using the Calm Birth meditations and through labor, then let's make this a part of how you are raising children. Like how beneficial do you think that will be as the children get older to understand and be able to utilize this practice? Especially again, you know, post COVID we have no idea what that world's gonna look like.”—Naima BondAbout Naima Bond:Naima Bond, M.Ed. has been serving children and families for over 25 years in the area of early childhood and disabilities. Michael Trout completed both his undergraduate studies in philosophy and his graduate studies in psychology in Michigan. He completed his specialized training in infant psychiatry at the Child Development Project, University of Michigan School of Medicine, under Prof. Selma Fraiberg. In the mental health field since 1968, and in private practice since 1979, Mr. Trout directs an institute engaged in research, clinical practice and clinical training related to problems of attachment. He was the founding president of the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health and the International Association for Infant Mental Health, was on the charter Editorial Board of the Infant Mental Health Journal, served as Vice-President for the United States for the World Association for Infant Mental Health, and served on the Board of Directors (and as Editor of the Newsletter) for APPPAH–the international society for prenatal and perinatal psychology. In addition to publishing a number of book chapters and journal articles–as well as the 2005 book, co-authored with a foster/adopt mother, The Jonathon Letters, and the 2008 Baby Verses: The Narrative Poetry of Infants and Toddlers–Mr. Trout has produced 16 documentary films that are in use in universities and clinics around the world, including five films on the unique perspective of babies on divorce, adoption, loss, domestic violence and parental incarceration. His meditation CD for foster and adoptive parents is entitled The Hope-Filled Parent. He co-authored See Me As A Person, on the nature of the therapeutic relationship, with Mary Koloroutis. His final book, This Hallowed Ground: Four Decades in Infant Mental Health, was published in 2019. Mr. Trout won the Selma Fraiberg Award in 1984, for “...significant contributions to the needs of infants and their families”, and a Lifetime Achievement Award by ATTACh, “for his decades of work with children of loss and trauma”.The most important part of Mr. Trout's work was always in the quiet private practice where he saw families and children of all ages every week. After 46 years, he retired in the summer of 2014. Michael's grandfather was his "Aunt Rosie," or Angel in the Nursery. In this podcast we talked about his early years with Selma Fraiburg, setting up the Infant-Parent Institute, his inspiration to create educational films and products in the baby's voice. We mentioned two stories that I love and have changed my life, practice and teaching: The Aunt Rosie Story, and the Infant Coherent Narrative. We end with talking about his approach, wondering, following and holding that he writes about in his book, See Me As A Person, Creating Therapeutic Relationships with Patients and Their Families, that he wrote with his wife, Mary Koloroutis. This book won the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year in 2013. He has published an audio book, This Hallowed Ground: Four Decades of Infant Mental Health that is audio only, and is available through the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health. Michael narrates the book, which makes it very powerful. I highly recommend you read it. Enjoy this hour with an amazing clinician. His stories and wisdom are gems.
Listen in to the second half of Michelle's conversation with Barbara Decker, one of the pioneers in the childbirth education movement. With a half-century of experience, Barbara explains that babies are looking for a trusting relationship with their parent. "This [early nurture period] is critically, critically important for society as a whole and the health and the humanity that we are trying to bring into the world. When parenting in the womb becomes a normal phase, a part of, having a baby, we can change society as a whole."—Barbara Decker About Barbara Decker:Barbara has been a childbirth educator for over 48 years. She's a doula, a HypnoBirthing ®Practitioner, PALS supporter and Mentor, PALS Northwest Hospital Ambassador, and an avid supporter of APPPAH (Association of Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health) as membership and Mentor for the PPNE (Prenatal and Perinatal Educator Certification Program) course. Listen in as Michelle gets to chat with Barbara Decker, one of the pioneers in the childbirth education movement. With a half-century of experience, Barbara shares her journey, including being one of the firsts to certify as a Lamaze instructor (before it was even called Lamaze) and certify as a doula with Penny Simpkin. Barbara is a long time HypnoBirthing® Instructor and expert in prenatal bonding. In this first half of their 2-part conversation, she provides a simple breathing technique to help calm and settle our nervous system. Something we, and our babies, can all use during these stressful times. "When the mother is included in the decision making, the end result is not traumatization after the birth. It can prevent having an effect on the mother as long as she's part of that decision making. ...It's vital. And then our mothers are not going to have the challenges. We don't want mothers going to the birth, to the labor room, in fear that they are gonna have to do battle. We want them to know that they are going to be treated with respect."—Barbara Decker About Barbara Decker:Barbara has been a childbirth educator for over 48 years.
