In this conversation, Phil and Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg discuss the concept of Lighthouse Parenting, a metaphor that emphasizes the importance of being a stable and guiding presence in a child's life. Dr. Ginsburg explains how this approach balances love and protection while allowing children to take healthy risks. They explore the role of adults in modeling behavior, the impact of stress and anxiety on children, and the challenges posed by technology and social media. The discussion highlights the need for emotional vulnerability in adults and the importance of fostering interdependence in future generations. Lighthouse Parenting is about balancing love and protection. Role modeling is crucial for children to take healthy risks. Children need stable relationships to thrive emotionally. Stress is a significant factor in unhealthy risk-taking. Preparation is a form of protection for children. Overprotection can lead to anxiety in children. Social media has both positive and negative impacts on youth. Emotional vulnerability in adults fosters connection with children. Teaching basic human connection is essential before introducing technology. Interdependence is key to raising secure and confident children. In this snack-sized episode, I share three concepts to help parents navigate the stormy waters of having a teen or young adult child who struggles with substance misuse and mental health issues. I emphasize the importance of self-care and separation from external chaos to maintain emotional stability and effectively support (and not drive crazy) those closest to you. I share three key points: visualizing personal boundaries to keep chaos out, understanding that every storm will eventually pass, and recognizing the harm caused by neglecting self-care. There's even a little bit of woo-woo included for those willing to experiment. Some practical tips and a personal story underscore the necessity of prioritizing your well-being for the benefit of your entire family.00:00 Introduction: Weathering the Storm00:39 Welcome to Hope Stream02:14 Taking Care of Yourself03:07 Maintaining Your Vessel's Integrity06:38 Every Storm Runs Out of Rain14:44 The Greatest Harm: Not Taking Care of Yourself17:52 Conclusion and ResourcesThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereFind us on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Reignite your marriage: www.thedadedge.com/extraordinary-marriage Today, I have the privilege of sitting down with Scott Zemens who epitomizes the power of personal transformation within family life and fatherhood. He's a dedicated business owner who, not long ago, found himself struggling to find balance in his life—feeling distant from his family and yearning for deeper connections with his kids. When he joined the Dad Edge Alliance, he made a bold commitment to step up, starting with daily, meaningful conversations with his children—asking open-ended questions to truly understand their world. On top of that, he made a life-changing decision to give up alcohol for a year, a move that radically reshaped his mindset, relationships, and energy as a father. The results have been extraordinary. His wife has expressed how much she loves the father he's become, especially his leadership in the home after the arrival of their baby last October. His kids now have a dad who listens more, talks less, and focuses on creating memories that will last a lifetime. Today, we'll dive into his journey—what inspired these changes, the lessons he's learned, and the advice he'd give to his pre-Alliance self about stepping into the kind of father, husband, and leader his family deserves. This special "WINSday" edition is all about celebrating our members' successes and sharing the valuable lessons they've learned on their journey to becoming better dads. She has over 10,000 hours of experience in education, both in the classroom and corporate sector. Even though she holds a Master's degree in education, she struggled to understand her neurodivergent and oppositional kids. Inspired by her experience using Myers Briggs and the Enneagram with business teams, she spent over a decade researching temperament pattens to help family teams. She is a best-selling author and host of the Not So Normal Parenting podcast. Her podcast is entitled Not So Normal Parenting because not only are she and her kids neurodivergent but some of her life experiences, such as driving off a cliff her wedding night and going viral for embarrassing her seventeen-year old son by dancing on a snowy and jammed interstate, fall into that category. In addition to being talked about by Hoda Kotb, the BackStreet Boys, and Princess Kate, even U2 singer Bono mentioned the incident in his autobiography. Because Wendy herself has struggled as a helicopter parent, a cranky parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle……..a little bit less!
