Welcome back to the SUPERJUMP Podcast. This month, we discuss one of the heavier topics and phenomena in the gaming industry: crunch within gaming development. This topic has plagued the industry for years without a working solution, while other fields, such as movies, music, and anime, have found ways to increase sustainability in developing their products. We are joined by Matt Paprocki to discuss why crunch exists, how it affects us (the gamers, developers, and companies), and what we can do to reduce its toll on the industry. You can follow Matt on Twitter @Matt_Paprocki; thank you for joining us for this episode! Welcome back to the SUPERJUMP Podcast. The podcast is back for a new season with a revamped format. Your hosts Tristan Jung and Raza Retiwala will discuss various gaming phenomena that help us dig into the art and science of video games. On our first episode, we talk about Video Game Streaming, a topic that has been filling the news with the recent shuttering of Google Stadia. We discuss the recent news and deep dive into the state of video game streaming, along with where we think it may go. You can find all SUPERJUMP content at https://www.superjumpmagazine.com/
Are we back?! Not really, haha, sorry. BUT, we have a very interesting interview with Colin Cox and Jon Phelps from The Hop-Ons Podcast. The Hop-Ons Podcast typically covers television shows (specifically, it has run through both Arrested Development and Twin Peaks), but there's a bit of a connection to video games that comes up in the interview that we think our listeners may appreciate. This episode was a lot of fun to record, so let us know if more off-topic interviews like these are your jam. Also, although the podcast has slowed down, there have been tons of amazing articles over on the main website coming out throughout the last year. Make sure to take a look! And remember, STAY SUPER!! Wyatt, James, and Mitchell are all here for the final (forseeable!) episode of the Super Jump Podcast. Thank you for listening all this time, and even more thanks to everyone who was involved in the show since its initiation including, but not limited to, Jeff Onan, Daryl Baxter, Gavin Price, Courtney Svatek, Josh Bycer, Anthony Wise, James Manley-Buser, the Kremling Kampaigners, the Medium staff, all writers and contributes to Super Jump Magazine, and Jamatar, who created our theme tune. Also all others I'm not specifically remembering at this moment in time. Please remember: Stay Super!!
How do you feel about video game announcements? Are they exciting? Do you find yourself getting wrapped up in the marketing material for projects you don't plan to ever actually engage with? We do. Well, sometimes. It depends on the format. That's kind of the point of this episode. Mitchell and Wyatt are in it and stuff. You know the drill. All that and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!!
Mitchell and Wyatt need to know: Where are all the studios going? It seems like every mid-size studio is either failing or is being absorbed into larger companies. Is there a future for game makers bigger than indies, but smaller than triple-A? All that and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast! If you'd like to write in to the show (and have your email read on-air), drop us a line at podcast@superjumpmagazine.com.
Wyatt and Mitchell talk about the Need For Speed: Heat announcement, a shake-up in the leadership of the development of Halo Infinite, and the propagation of leaks in the video game industry and more in this week's episode of the Super Jump Podcast!!
Wyatt and Mitchell talk about some of the latest releases and final tip our toes into some Gamer Girl Bath Water, but ALSO: We sat down with Gavin Price of Playtonic Games to talk about their upcoming game, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair! Join us as we talk about what's went into the development of that game, what the future of the studio might look like, and more on this week's episode of the Super Jump Podcast!!
We bring James and Mitchell back together to discuss the post-E3 news and there's... not really that much this year. That said, there's still some stuff. We'll talk about EA's "surprise mechanics," James' personal takeaways from this year's E3, great games like Super Mario Maker 2, Outer Wilds, and Cadence of Hyrule, and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!!
Jeff Onan joins Mitchell to talk about the big show. We go over EA, Microsoft, Bethesda, Ubisoft, Square-Enix, and Nintendo's showings before going into our individual experiences on the showfloor playing demos and meeting folks. It's a magical time that only comes once per year, so we sincerely hope you'll join us on this week's Super Jump Podcast!!
In the lead-up to E3 2019, Mitchell asks Daryl Baxter back on the show to share their predictions and hopes for each participating company. Also, Mitchell accidentally calls Daryl "Dylan"! Multiple times! It's truly embarrassing! All this and more on this week's episode of the Super Jump Podcast!! Check out Daryl's work at https://darylbaxter.com/. We especially recommend his podcast Pal Keys.
Two movies are coming out this year about electric rodents from video games. Why is Sonic electric in the movie? Wass Detective Pikachu everything Mitchell has ever wanted? Will James force Mitchell to stand in line for four hours to play Final Fantasy VII Remake at E3 for the good of the magazine? Is Valve's new VR hardware maybe a bit too expensive? The answer to all of those questions is "Yes!" but you can go ahead and listen to the episode anyway. There's more information on this week's Super Jump Podcast!!
It's been a little while since the show has returned to its roots, so we made a point to have just James and Mitchell sit down and talk games. In this back-to-basics episode, we go over the last few weeks' news items including Nintendo letting an indie studio use The Legend of Zelda, Microsoft's exact plans working with other hardware makers, and Google's foray into games streaming. All this and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!! Theme music is by Jamatar.
Wyatt and Mitchell get together this week to discuss Dragon Ball, Jason Schreier's coverage of Anthem's development, a Power Rangers fighting game, and much more! Is Nintendo's attempt at VR worth talking about? Is competitive Melee sick as in "Righteous, bruh!" or sick as in "has an illness"? All of this and more on this week's episode of the Super Jump Podcast!! Theme music is by Jamatar.
Mitchell is joined by Daryl Baxter, a freelance writer and fellow podcaster, to talk about some very para-exciting developments! Apple is launching a new premium game subscription service, Google is premiering a streaming platform that may very possibly be the first one to truly "work," and Nintendo and Sony both made some announcements of their own. Will these reveals have the industry-shaking effect that they seem to have, or will they come and go only to make room for the next Future of Gaming? All that and more in this week's Super Jump Podcast!! Theme music is by Jamatar. Check out Daryl's podcast PAL Keys here!
Wyatt and Mitchell have an abnormal amount of news to discuss on this episode, so they brought on Josh Bycer from Game Wisdom to help them out! From Anthem's shortcomings, to Pokémon Sword and Shield's announcement, to a possible collaboration between Nintendo and Xbox coming in the near future. All this and more in this month's Super Jump Podcast!! Check out Game Wisdom at http://game-wisdom.com/ Reach out: Contact us with your feedback/questions/comments - you might be read on the show! Our email is podcast@superjumpmagazine.com.
You know the drill. When big Pokémon news happens, we bring Jeff Onan on the show to talk with Mitchell about it. This time, we got new trailers for two distinct Pokémon movies releasing before the end of the year. Can you believe we're getting two in one year? By the time both of these come out, there will be a total of 23 theatrical Pokémon films. That's wild. Also, we of course need to talk about Pokémon Sword and Shield. Are they the big, exciting, console Pokémon games we've been waiting for? Find out all that and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast.
For our Pi episode, we talk about the recent Activision Blizzard layoffs and Nintendo Direct! Mitchell's still playing through Dragon Quest III and Wyatt's still playing Apex Legends. Additionally, both folks tried out the new Nintendo free-to-play battle royale, Tetris 99! That sentence has so many parts that don't make any sense. Nintendo has a battle royale? And it's Tetris? What's next, puppies for dead people?! Why would they even need puppies? It seems like a poorly thought-out arrangement, but Tetris 99 isn't! Seriously, these blurbs are getting harder to write every week. All that and more on this episode of the Super Jump Podcast! Reach out: Contact us with your feedback/questions/comments - you might be read on the show! Our email is podcast@superjumpmagazine.com.
Mitchell and Wyatt talk up that new hotness, Apex Legends. How good was that stealth reveal? Also, Blizzard is having a bit of an issue at the moment (this episode was recorded before the layoffs). What does it mean for the company's future? Finally, should the term we use for immediately releasing a game after its reveal be "shadow dropping" or "throwing a Beyoncé"? We think both terms have merit. All that and more on this episode of the Super Jump Podcast! Reach out: Contact us with your feedback/questions/comments - you might be read on the show! Our email is podcast@superjumpmagazine.com.
Mitchell and James are absolutely floored by a recent Nintendo announcement. Frankly, we didn’t think being open about that kind of thing in the video game industry was something you could do. Additionally, Mitchell started playing Kingdom Hearts IIIwithout first experiencing any of the other Kingdom Hearts games in any way whatsoever. It goes about as expected. James has been playing the Resident Evil 2 remake and he’s been desperately trying to finish Persona 5 — it never ends! Finally, some staggering sales numbers have just come come to light and they blew us away. All that and more on this episode of the Super Jump Podcast! After a brief hiatus, we returned to some big news: Bungie has wrestled control of Destiny away from Activision, EA decided to cancel EA Vancouver’s open world Star Wars game, and Netflix is apparently worried about Fortnite capturing everyone’s screen time. Oh, and we somehow managed to discuss Breath of the Wild yet again, but don’t despair: Mitchell details his thoughts on his very first experience with Dragon Quest (an absolute must-listen), and James shares a few tales from his recent trip to Japan! You’ll hear all that and more on this week’s Super Jump Podcast! Reach out to us at podcast@superjumpmagazine.com if you'd like to discuss anything we've covered (or not) in the show. Oh, and please let us know if you don't want your email read on air. You can visit us at superjumpmagazine.com.
With that old, smelly, ghost of a year called "2018" out of the way, we can focus on her younger, sexier sister, 2019. Man, I hated writing that sentence. It's terrible. I started by calling a year a ghost, and does that just mean that it's over? What am I really meaning by saying that? Is it an insult to call a year a ghost? And that whole thing about transitioning over to another year because it's younger and sexier? That's not me; I don't know where that came from. I don't like it. Wow, 2019 sucks already. Anyway, Wyatt and Mitchell are still playing loads of Smash Bros., someone started a fight in the Smash community, and we each have a few predictions for how 2019 is going to go. All that and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!!
Yeah, we're still going to end up talking about Smash Bros. It's unavoidable! We'll get James' first impressions on the game and then head straight into the SUPER JUMP PODCAST 2018 AWARDS!! Mitchell, Wyatt, and James present their games of the year and more on this final 2018 episode of the Super Jump Podcast!!
On December 6th, The Game Awards happened and then, within minutes of it ending, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released. We usually try to hype up a diversity of topics in these blurbs, but this episode is pretty much just about those two things. How has the competitive scene been reacting toward the new Smash? Is The Game Awards an optimal way for the games industry to show itself off? How was that Joker announcement? Wyatt and Mitchell tackle these questions and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!!
Sometimes, you get prepped to wait for something for a very, very long time. Most Smash Brothers games have a very long launch cycle where we wait for multiple years for the game's release. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, however, was announced this E3 and came out this year, which is such a nice change of pace. Join Mitchell and friend-of-the-show Jeff Onan as they give their first impressions on the game, what they liked, what they thought the game lacked, and what they think is coming for this game down the line. All that and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!!
This week is a solid mix of both good and bad news. James and Mitchell talk about some high-profile games that they didn't enjoy as much as they hoped they would, but there are also some highlights in the delightful Tetris Effect and Nintendo killing their questionably legal Creators Program for Youtubers. All that and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!! Theme music by Jamatar.
Sony announces that they won't be at E3 and, frankly, we have a hard time guessing why. Detective Pikachu gets a chance on the silver screen and it looks so much better than it has any right to. Finally, I guess the N64 Classic just doesn't exist? Mitchell and Wyatt discuss all this and more on this week's episode of the Super Jump Podcast!! Thank you to Jamatar for the music!
Reveals are probably my favorite thing to focus on in a podcast, and we have a lot of them this week. Both the recent Super Smash Bros. Direct and this year's BlizzCon have run the gamut of both great and disappointing reveals and we break down what those reveals mean. Also, that cowboy game came out, didn't it? What was it called? Overwatch? All that and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!
What do Smash leaks, Rockstar's work environment, and musical sensation Drake have in common? We talk about them on this episode and... that's it! All that and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast!! Musical themes and interludes by Jamatar.
Word up, children. Time to talk about video games. *dab* We here at Super Jump know how to talk to children. We know they love the hiphop music and the Fortnite dances. We've seen the Youtubes. What we don't know is how the young people feel about Super Mario Party. It's a very specific gap in our knowledge. This week, we pop a squat with Payton Wolfe, self-professed "young person" and get her take on things. Does she like it? What's her favorite mode? All this and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast.
It looks like Microsoft is doing what Microsoft does best these days: buying other companies. Jason Schreier opened up a debate on the legitimacy of microtransactions in otherwise standard-priced games. We have some thoughts. Also, an Assassin's Creed came out and James played it. Mitchell has played almost nothing at all. What's he up to? I legitimately don't know. He doesn't tell me anything anymore! What a mysteriously aloof man, he is. In any case, all of this and more, in this week's Super Jump Podcast!!
You found our secret HALF-EPISODE! What a slooth you are! This episode didn't exactly get the full release treatment because the software terror that is Audacity ate up the front third or so of the audio. Oops! There's still a lot in this episode, however, so we wanted to at least give our listeners the option of listening to it. In this episode, Mitchell and Wyatt talk mostly about Harry Potter and Fortnite. There was some other stuff as well, but, like I said, Audacity ate it all. We are genuinely really excited about both those things, however, so please join us on this week's Super Jump Podcast!
Weird few weeks for gaming, huh? I don't really know how I feel about it quite yet. A few studios closed down, a fad lasts two decades long, and Destiny is still worth talking about. All that and more on episode 302 of the Super Jump Podcast!
We're in a pretty fun position right now. We know a good amount about what's going to be in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but not everything. Some leakers have established themselves as legitimate. Some patterns have been broken. Numbers have been given by Sakurai and the rest of the team about stages, music tracks, and development time, but we still have questions, guesses, and wants. Join Mitchell and friend-of-the-show Jeff Onan as they discuss leaks, patterns, and desires pertaining to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in this week's Midjump. Feel free to email us at podcast@superjumpmagazine.com. Your question or comment may be read on the show. Also, feel free to check out Jeff Onan's work cataloging the growth process of Sea of Thieves at his Medium page, Golden Sands Blogpost.
We're back and we've got new tact! tics! Tactics. You know, for making the show more regular?Mitchell's here. James is here. Wyatt's here? Yup, we brought on a newby and he has interesting opinions about things! Good things! Man, I liked this episode. I can't really tell when we have a great episode, you know? But I like this episode a lot. It's pretty good and it was fun to record. In any case, please sit back, relax, and join us on our third adventure through the information superhighway we call the Super Jump Podcast!!
As the tides of time roll through the sands of life, things shift. Some are gained, some are lost, some inverted, and some elevated to previously unreached heights. This is all to say that this is the conclusion of the second season of the Super Jump Podcast. When we come back, we have new goals of achieving a regular weekly schedule, adding at least one regular cohost to the show, and having a more professional sound complete with custom music and effects. BUT, we still have this episode before we go. This week, we talk about Hollow Knight and how it's really, really, really good, the merits of the 3DS, and the reveals coming out of Gamescom. Also, we have an exciting interview with the Kremling Kampaigners. King K. Rool is in Smash Bros. now, and these are the guys to thank. Would you believe it? We heard you like the Super Jump Podcast, so we put the Super Jump Podcast inside your Super Jump Podcast! That's right, Midjumps will now be inserted into the main episode and we'll return officially (even though we already were there) to a biweekly structure. Episodes will be longer and meatier from now on, and if you don't like it that way... E-mail us at podcast@superjumpmagazine.com! This week, we talk about the ever-approaching generation 9 of consoles. The Playstation 5 and the Xbox Scarlett seem to be very real and increasingly soon. How will that affect the gaming landscape? Also, stay tuned for a discussion about Sea of Thieves' growth with friends of the show Cameron from DK Vine and Jeff from the Golden Sands Blogpost. Man... we uh... we just took a little nap for a couple of weeks. Don't mind us. We may have the least-consistent release schedule of all-time, but we pack a punch where it counts: ... heart? Sure, we have a lot of heart. What we don't have, however, is news. What do we do in times of news drought? Is it healthy for the industry's news circuit to have all of these peaks and valleys? What does it say about the state gaming is in right now? All these questions and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast. We're back with a our first regular episode since E3! It's about... E3! Last one, we promise! In this episode, we talk about what Mitchell saw on the show floor and conclude our thoughts on E3. Who won? What game performed the best in show? Did Mitchell play any ramen-based games at Indiecade? All these questions and more on this week's Super Jump Podcast. We're wrapping up our special run of E3 episodes... a bit late. Sorry! Couldn't have been helped. In this episode, Mitchell and James talk about the presentations from Square Enix, Ubisoft, Limited Run Games, Sony, and Nintendo. Thanks for waiting and we can't wait to see you at E3 next year!
The Sunday of E3 2018 has come and gone and, with it, all of the biggest news from Bethesda and Microsoft are now out in the open. Mitchell went to Microsoft in person and braved the LA just for you. Hear our thoughts on Halo Infinite, Fallout 76, Battletoads and more on today's June Jump.
This episode is budget-length because we're saving all of our energy for E3. We talk about the first Sea of Thieves expansion, we look at the recent Pokémon news dump, and we answer some fanmail. Also, we outline what's in store for this podcast for the next week. All that and more in this week's Super Jump Podcast. E3 is casting its shadow upon us like a total eclipse of the sun. By the time it finally arrives, we'll be faced with a number of exciting reveals that will distract from other smaller announcements. This seems to be the reason why there is a rush by many studios and publishers to get some of those incidental announcements out now, before they are drowned out. We'll talk about Nintendo's Online program, State of Decay 2, Destiny 2: Warmind, Sea of Thieves: The Hungering Deep, Pokémon Let's Go!, Star Fox: Grand Prix, Rage 2, and more all on this week's episode of the Super Jump Podcast. Mitchell invites Jeff Onan back on the show to talk about the potential Pokémon Switch leak. While the Super Jump podcast usually doesn't discuss unconfirmed information, this leak has been corroborated by enough different people and outlets to put our full trust into it. How will this Pokémon GO!-enhanced game fare in comparison with previous efforts? Is this the perfect gateway game for the series to jump onto home console? Find out more in this week's Midjump. Please reach out at podcast@superjumpmagazine.com and remember to review and subscribe.
Mitchell and James check out that good news. Sometimes we don't get to report on good news, but this time, we do...s. We doos? I wanted it to rhyme, but it's obviously too streigned. Anyway, we also talk about God of War, Nintendo Labo, and our E3 predictions on this week's Super Jump Podcast. What happens at night? Gaming, drinking, editing, binging Wikipedia, and reminiscing. Well, except editing. While the regular Super Jump Podcast has been delayed a week, the Midjump makes a sneaky return. Welcome to the Midjump After Dark. Jeff Onan joins Mitchell to talk about Sea of Thieves, the Pokémon anime, and his connection to the Xbox One. Super Jump reminds you to drink responsibly.
