For years now, members of Seattle's political establishment have been trying to fix one particular street corner: 12th and Jackson, in Little Saigon. This corner is an example of what city leaders call "hot spots" — tiny sections of the city that are home to disproportionate amounts of crime and disorder. A report by the city last year found there were more than a hundred crimes targeting people and overdoses - mainly from fentanyl - at or around 12th and Jackson over a one-year period. And it's been this way for years. Leaving residents and business owners in this historically Asian-American community begging for help from the city. KUOW's Will James wanted to know: What's driving the crisis on display at 12th and Jackson? Why has it persisted for so long? And is there a solution to these problems that seem so intractable? Will spent months visiting this corner and getting to know some of the people who congregate there, trying to answer these questions. What do we think of Tottenham? Are they still a top team, or are they a team that should be compared to the likes of Everton, or dare I say it, Manchester United? Does the owner deserve the blame aimed at him, or are on-field issues unrelated to what's going on behind the curtains? Will James be able to put aside his North London bias? Will Dan be able to ignore their relegation battle? Will Ces be able to mediate all this bias with his world-renowned unbiased footballing views? It all sounds Spursy, but it's fixable... alright?!
Thirty years ago, housing activists began an unusual experiment to help people struggling with homelessness and chronic addiction. They decided to get people into housing first and then try to help their clients with their addictions. This idea, called "Housing First," is now the central strategy guiding homeless services in America. But the concept is facing new scrutiny and growing criticism from conservative lawmakers. Today on The Sunday Story, we look at the controversy around Housing First and consider if the strategy is working as it was designed. You can listen to Will James's full documentary on KUOW's Soundside podcast.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

As the Trump administration prepares to take office, a fight is brewing over the future of homelessness in America. For about a decade now, the federal government has pushed a strategy called Housing First. It's designed to get people off the streets and into permanent homes... even when they have serious problems with mental illness or substance use. Seattle was one of the earliest adopters of this approach, back in the nineties. But, over the past few years, a growing chorus of critics — mostly on the political right — has questioned Housing First. They want to go back to a time when efforts to fight homelessness focused more on getting people into treatment and having them "earn" access to subsidized housing by changing their behaviors. Now some of those critics are about to come to power in the White House, like Vice President elect JD Vance. You've probably heard of Project 2025. It's the conservative Heritage Foundation's plan for Trump's second term. It calls for an end to Housing First — a move that would upend the nation's homelessness strategy. KUOW's Will James has covered homelessness for years. He wanted to know: What is at the heart of this backlash against Housing First? And, with homelessness reaching record levels, do the critics have a point? Is it time to change course? If so, where do we go from here? Will spent months digging into these questions and brings us this original, freshly-reported documentary, which we're sharing with you for the first time today. The story starts right here in Seattle... because this city is intertwined with the history of Housing First and now, the movement against it. Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! We have one more lookback on our 2024 reporting, as we transition into the new year. Severe mental illness is a very visible problem in Seattle. In 2023, police responded to almost 10 thousand scenes of people experiencing mental health crises. Investigative reporters spent the past year asking big questions on the show Lost Patients about why so many people with severe mental illness end up untreated, and on the streets. And as they did, Seattle continued to pass legislation against one of the connected elements, public drug use. The newest laws are stay out of drug areas, also called SODAs, in hot spots for drug use and sales. Those went into effect in October. And the problems are still visible. Today we re-visit an episode from earlier in the year because this question, of how the problem got so severe, is as relevant as ever. We talked to Lost Patients host Will James back in March. Even when our traditions may look externally very different, the shape of our journeys of finding faith (and losing...and maybe finding again), are remarkably similar! In this conversation, Will James shares vulnerably about his experience through the Seventh-Day Adventist. They delve deep into the teachings of Ellen White, the nature of truth, the relationship between scientific understanding and belief systems, the significance of the Sabbath, and the impact of parenting on belief systems. They also touch on the evolution of understanding God, the importance of community, and the journey of self-discovery as they navigate their spiritual paths. It's a wild ride, and a very particular account of a faith journey...that we somehow think might yet somehow sound a whole lot like your own.
We dive deep into our childhood for this one. Will James love or hate this cheesy classic? Find out.

Will James is a husband, father, and attorney in Oklahoma who saw a video on TikTok from a former Adventist asking ‘where are the ex Adventists telling our stories? We have to be out here?' Imagine a sprawling house in which every room, doorway, and hall passage was designed by a different architect. Doorways don't connect. Staircases lead to nowhere. Rooms are cut off from each other. That's how reporter Will James describes our complicated system for treating people with severe mental illness – a system that, almost by design, loses patients with psychosis to an endless loop between the streets, jail, clinics, courts and a shrinking number of hospital beds. Lost Patients is a deeply-reported, six-part docuseries examining the difficulties of treating serious mental illness through the lens of one city's past, present and future. With real-life testimonials from patients, families, and professionals on the front lines, Lost Patients provides a real, solutions-oriented look at how we got stuck here...and what we might do to break free.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

We have another hot live caller episode. This is where you become part of the content creation on several current F1 topics. We get into Williams Racing and the challenge James Vowles has set in motion for rookie driver Logan Sargeant. Will James keep Logan around as a driver for 2024? That is the big question. If Logan finishes out the season collecting a few more DNF due to collisions. Likely not IMO! Red Bull AlphaTauri have a driver debacle brewing as Liam Lawson has proven better goods than DeVries & Daniel Ricciardo. But, they decide to back seat Liam to reserve driver role and slot Danny in for the seat going forward. Liam Lawson is the only driver other than Yuki to add points during this 2023 season. Why have they done this to Liam? Lewis Hamilton is the greatest Formula 1 driver and it seems many are quick to rush him out the door. This could be for several reasons and none that are directly related to his current ability. We'll leave that for a different episode. Lewis has managed to bring team Mercedes several podiums in this 2023 season. And, Lewis has managed to be on podium all while being supplied a subpar Mercedes W14 car.
