A week full of Switch 2 rumors and speculation. We also continue our tournament of Nintendo's biggest mistakes with the Sony Play Station vs Nintendo Labo.
In this episode of Kirby Conversations, we're getting nostalgic with Kirby's Dream Land 2—or at least Sean and Bridget are, as Ky's playing this one for the first time. We consider how well this nearly 30-year-old title holds up today, from its introduction of Kirby's animal friends Rick, Kine, and Coo to its satisfying (and challenging) puzzle design. KDL2 was also a game designed for the Super Game Boy, a 1994 peripheral that used the Super Nintendo to bring Game Boy games to your TV with enhanced visuals, sound, and other features. So for Act 2 we look at the history of that device and discuss our other favorite experiences with peripherals that attach to games and consoles, including Ky's promotional work for Nintendo on Nintendo Labo. For Act 3, found only on Patreon, we're staying with the retro theme of this episode to ask, "What is retro?" We also consider how you can enjoy retro games without spending a fortune, and Sean shares a recent favorite video game experience fighting a cow.Want to support the show and potentially win a huge collection of new Switch games? Here are all of this week's questions: - Are you interested in playing co-op games in a theater? - Are recent high scores justified? - Will we get disappointing games in 2024? - Will TV audiences be upset with The Last of Us season 2? - Why is Nintendo adding Denuvo security? - Are you guys interested in playing Armored Core VI? - What is one game you'd recommend to anyone? - Does reviewing games negatively affect your experience? - Is Starfield receiving more-than-expected hatred? - Will Xbox keep its promise of releasing 4 AAAs a year? - What will be Starfield's Metacritic score? - What's worse: PlayStation Portal or Nintendo Labo? - Which does Brett prefer more: Elden Ring or Baldur's Gate 3? - How much have you spent on gaming in 2023? - Which has the better mid-gen refresh strategy? Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we complete our series on Metroid Prime. We discuss the visor modes, the pleasing arc of the end game, and other topics before we turn to our takeaways. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Finished the game! Issues covered: the face of the Metroid Prime core, reflecting the art of Samus in the environment or creatures, seventeen films in five and a half days, vision modes in games, using vision modes for boss fights and other uses, what is that sound you're hearing?, scanning to get the riddles, using this as a blueprint to figure out other things to do, using the Chozo descriptions to find the artifacts, having the sense of empowerment returning to the areas, not needing to move the goalposts, the toppled tower and other setpieces, a game about seeing, scanning the totems as an unlock, the prophecy of the chosen/Chozo one, where these games connect together, Omega Pirate adding visors to combat, love/hate and the Ridley battle, those Switch joy-cons, learning the pattern recognition, not being sure where your collision ends, finding depth in the movement system, having a final boss that's a little easier, Tim totally misses me saying "that's how we roll" in our Metroid series, translating into a new genre and going their own way, excellent art direction, making the 3D work, the importance of craftmanship, the controller matters, making a business model choice. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Mark Haigh-Hutchison, Marvel (film series), Star Wars, Republic Commando, Mortal Kombat (series), Arkham (series), Assassin's Creed (series), Dr. Who, Morrowind, Halo, Eternal Darkness, Brad Furminger, Everybody Switch, Nintendo Labo, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. This episode is a special one, and is one of my personal favorites. It's a late night ICBTB sesh, and we are joined by old improv friends, SAGE AND JESSICA (20 Sided Stories Podcast). We talk about how techonology makes us mad, cardboard virtual reality (Nintendo Labo), Emma Stone vibes, the art of "inarticulation", just doin' it, humans just being monkeys throwing rocks, paramount plus, Gen Z TikTokers, and the balance of performance and integrity. Our improv scene is BONKERS so prepare yourself. HAPPY FRIDAY BADDIES, and shout out to all of special guests that came on the show while we were in LA! We played the open beta for Back 4 Blood, the new game from Turtle Rock Studios. We're excited to see where this game goes but right now it feels like it's missing something. Listen and find out. We also play Nintendo Labo, the part Lego part game that Nintendo brought out in 2018. Brett spent time building some of these cardboard creations and it's surprisingly a blast to build! Unfortunately, we close out with our disappointment in Sea of Thieves. It's not near as good with the new update as we hoped but at least the Adventure mode is still fun.In the news, Blizzard's President has left, Ghost of Tsushima Legends is going standalone and the Epic Games Store was crazy expensive. We also heard some news that South Park is bringing a new game, a series of new seasons and more.In our discussion, we talk about the state of microtransactions. We used to be big against microtransactions but our idea has since shifted over time as they've developed. With the introduction of Battle Passes and clearer purchases, we've found ourselves investing more in them as they bring out more exciting content. However, the question still remains...are these content packs taking away from our original story content?Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube.Show Notes:4:05 - Back 4 Blood Beta37:39 - Nintendo Labo48:55 - Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life1:00:31 - Ghosts of Tsushima Legends, South Park and Epic Games Store1:29:29 - The State of Microtransactions1:51:45 - Upcoming Video Game ReleasesBecome a part of the conversation! After (un)comfortably deep diving into Tingle's Rosey Rupeeland last week, Andy decided to briefly escape the country, so Taylor sets out to find Kevin to help him discuss today's topics. Breath of the Wild has continued its inexorable ride with a VR element using Nintendo Labo while Kevin and Taylor debate whether VR is a good idea. The game also gets an update that improves the load time of Shrines, which of course leads to the Champions' thinking about speedrunning! It wouldn't be Champions' Cast episode if we didn't get caught up in the hype of a certain major movie to be released last week and to coincide with this, we're playing the role of casting directors and work out which Zelda characters could best play Avengers heroes! Ever wonder what Zelda characters might look like in a tabletop RPG session? Kevin & Taylor have put some serious thought into it and we lay out some demands for what we want to see in Nintendo's ever expanding non-video game Zelda selection. It's a jam packed episode this week so don't miss it!
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Can it be true? Can No Man's Sky finally be good? With their Next update that just released, it may have just achieved that. They've overhauled everything with more to do, dynamic worlds and MULTIPLAYER! Brett also plays Sleep Tight which is a tower defense game set in a kid's bedroom. You have to set up pillow walls and toy turrets to fight off against the monsters in the closet. It's a cute little game that leaves a little to be desired. In the news this week, London Spitfire wins the Overwatch League Finals! Nintendo Labo has a great new update with vehicles, Destiny is putting it's lore in books and the team behind Dead Cells pays everyone the same and has no bosses. Our discussion topic is about indie game distribution. Last month we had a story about a game called “Active Shooter” that eventually got pulled because of its controversial subject matter. Soon after, Steam stated they'd no longer be policing games unless it was illegal or “trolling.” In addition to this, getting into systems such as the Xbox and Playstation is way harder so we explore the difficulties indie game developers have in such a flooded market. I thought John was headed to Croatia for business. He said it was for business. It turns out he was harvesting 30 year old landmines for the purposes of reminiscing about games of a similar age with me, his brother-son. Suffice it to say that the stakes have risen and I'm no longer feeling safe while recording this podcast. That's life, though, I suppose. Prior to the violence, the fam goes over the latest headlines in gaming before spending some time discussing Nintendo Labo. John got a chance to experience this unique new toywith his daughters and it sounds like all parties are pleased. From there, we dive into God of Warand discuss our early impressions of the game. All this and more on today's show.
It's a loopy latest installment of the flagship podcast from SoftcoreGamers.com and the Softcore Gamers. Jim, Aaron, Nick, Jeremy, and Greg gather to discuss rumors of a super secret Bioshock sequel, changes to the Call of Duty franchise, the release of the Nintendo Labo, and more! Check it out!
It's always nice to have guests here at the Cartridge House (yes, capital H). Today, Josh Hawkins of Greenlit Content decided to grace us with his God of Warknowledge and so much more. Besides our favorite Nordic father-brother, the fam runs through the latest releases in gaming before discussing the rumors and news regarding the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops IVand Battlefield 5. We wrap up the show with another violent trip down memory lane. As always, thanks for listening!

InnerSpace came out last week and we got a chance to play and share our impressions. InnerSpace is a new exploratory adventure game from PolyKnight Games. Think of it as a mix between Journey and Abzu with a touch of progression. Austin jumps back into Divinity: Original Sin 2 after our awesome interview from PAX South with the team at Larian Studios. In the news this week, Nintendo announces their new "toy-con" kits called Nintendo Labo. These are cardboard cutouts that allow you to make your Switch into a bunch of interactive toys such as a fishing rod, piano, RC car and even a robot! Fortnite is seeing huge success after the release of their Battle Royale mode, Overwatch League's Dallas team runs into some trouble with a player and Dr. Disrespect is back after a 2 week hiatus? Finally, our discussion this week is over cooperative games of 2018. This year we're seeing a big shift in developers diversifying the co-op experience and we explore how they're doing that. To our surprise, Microsoft is a huge part of that conversation. Don't forget to check our video segment on this talk Thursday at youtube.com/theinnergamer. This week we get all excited about Nintendo Labo and it's possible future. Rory is all giddy about Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dale (for some reason) is banging on about former Coventry City legend, Dion Dublin and Cardy returns with his now infamous Football Manager updates (We still need a better title). Also, after getting so much good feedback, we decided make the email section twice as long this week. There's some great questions and frankly, a mixed bag of responses... Nintendo's history of releasing quirky, exciting gaming peripherals continues with the announcement of Nintendo Labo, coming this spring. If you haven't yet learned about Labo, the product comes packed with “blueprints” to a number of constructable cardboard cutouts all of which interface in some way with the accompanying Nintendo Switch software of the same name. Naturally, the family's interest is peaked by this news and so we spend a good portion of time going over this very weird and lovely concept before we jump into some heavier topics. David Cage's Quantic Dream, the development house responsible for the upcoming Detroit: Become Human, was hit this week by allegations damning the company for harboring a toxic work environment and fostering a negative office culture made evident by high employee turnover. The boys discuss these allegations, which Cage denies, and go on to talk a bit more about how a company's culture can affect the mental health of its staff. Afterward, we lighten things up again with Round Two of 19Q Magoo, everyone's favorite 20-questions spinoff where the first question is implied and therefore omitted “Is it a video game?” … Yes. Yes it is. If you missed Round 1 of 19Q Magoo, you can listen to it here (don't worry though, you can start with this one, too!) Thanks for listening!
Final Fantasy 15 Royal Edition, new Alien game, Nintendo Labo, and more. The song from this episode is "Friends Under Coils" from the album Daecare.
