In this week's episode of The Game Deflators Podcast, John and Ryan dive into some of the hottest gaming news and controversies. First, they break down the latest PlayStation Plus price hikes affecting over 20 different countries, discussing what this means for gamers. Is the subscription service still worth the cost? Next, they examine a recent study by Newzoo on video game microtransactions, exploring how in-game purchases shape player behavior and the gaming industry as a whole. Are microtransactions a necessary evil, or are they pushing the limits of what players are willing to spend? Finally, the duo takes a nostalgic trip back to the NES era with a review of Battletoads—a game notorious for its punishing difficulty. Does the cult classic still hold up, or is it best left in the past?   Articles covered: https://kotaku.com/pc-gaming-microtransactions-elden-ring-borderlands-4-1851775837     https://www.thegamer.com/playstation-plus-ps-plus-price-hikes/      Want more Game Deflators content? I haven't played a bad Star Wars game yet, and Super Star Wars is probably a top 3 for me at this point. I love this game! It scratches every itch I have. It's an SNES game. It's fun. It's tough as balls. It plays great. Aside form that damned Sandcrawler, I don't know if I have a single complaint! Just don't expect me to talk about the last third of the game, because I can't get that far... My go to guest for all things Star Wars is my pal Tyler, and we had a chat about why this game is so good, despite being so tough. And we did it WHILE I was playing the game and setting a new personal best for how long I could last without dying! And before we put go to war with the stars, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks me what I would do if I could make any video game, anyway I want. What games would I make harder if I could? And should Mario Kart continue to include auto-steer options in future iterations? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Level three of my accessibility in gaming series is a rare treat, because I speak to none other than Topher Winward. Topher Winward is a software engineer and developer at Rare formerly Rareware. Rare is the studio responsible for such iconic video games like Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong Country, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye 007, Battletoads, and Jet Force Gemini. As a kid who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, and spent most of his time playing on the Nintendo 64. I cannot begin to express how much my interview with Topher Winward meant to me. It is amazing to see how even though I have continued to lose my vision that I still am capable of playing games developed by Rare. This is due to the committment Rare has taken as a studio to ensuring that their games are accessible. I had so much fun learning about how Sea of Thieves ended up featuring so many accessibility features. Additionally, I found it so interesting how Topher found himself at the helm of the ship steering accessibility in Sea of Thieves alongside his amazing colleagues. This episode of the podcast was originally recorded last year in August.

Show Notes That's it, folks. The final Stone Age Starter Kit is done. After years of asking the question, we finally ask it for the last time. If you had $100 to start a physical Xbox One collection, which games should you get? Of course, ending on Xbox One maybe wasn't the best idea because neither Dan nor Kris have extensive knowledge on the console and its library, but they tried their best, gosh darn it! Even though Kri still can't stop coughing.Apologies for that. Regardless, the Xbox One has an interesting game library, and a number of physical releases that made for an interesting conversation. Or at least we hope so. At the top of the show, Dan and Kris talk a bit about their Thanksgiving holidays, and their Black Friday shopping experiences, or lack thereof. There weren't a lot of deep discounts out in the world this year, and nobody seemed interested in getting trampled for a good price on a new TV. They also discussed some hate mail they got recently, because nothing brightens up one's day quite like a stranger on the internet letting you know how much they hate you. (Seriously, the term “woke Battletoads” was used.) Also, Super Mario RPG is great. Enjoy! A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

In 2011-2012, the gaming world was in flux. While iconic figures like Sonic celebrated milestones, the industry grappled with newfound freedoms and responsibilities, thanks to the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Brown vs. Entertainment Merchants Association. This decision affirmed video games as expressive art, prompting developers to venture into uncharted territories. Meanwhile, controversies swirled, from the PlayStation Network hack in retaliation to Sony's lawsuit against George 'Geohotz' Hotz, to EA's contentious "Project Ten Dollar" and the emergence of loot boxes. Amid this, Epic Games unveiled Fortnite, hinting at future trends. 2012 saw Sony's PlayStation Vita and Nintendo's Wii U launch, with both navigating murky waters. The Vita battled its identity amidst the mobile gaming surge and the cross-buy initiative's challenges, while the Wii U grappled with marketing missteps. Yet, as consoles stumbled, PC gaming surged, and esports, bolstered by Twitch's rise, began its mainstream march. This period encapsulated the industry's transformative journey, marked by innovation, challenges, and the reshaping of gaming's cultural footprint.Featured Games:The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Portal 2, Dark Souls, Beyond Good & Evil, Halo Reach, Mass Effect 3, Battle Toads, Max Payne 3, Journey, FTL: Faster Than Light, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, The Walking Dead, & Halo 4. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 9 (00:06) - 2011 (27:22) - 2012 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

[School of Everything Else 2023] The greatest brawler series in the history of video games. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of playing one of the four Streets of Rage, even if beat-'em-ups aren't your thing you owe it to yourself to investigate the sheer *craft* of these classics.  Beginning with the original in 1991 and refined to magnificence with the second in 1992. They need to be looked at in conjunction with their contemporaries like Double Dragon (1987) the excellent Final Fight (1989) and Turtles in Time (1992) as well as looking forward down the chain of influence to Scott Pilgrim (2010), Fight'N Rage (2017) the recent Battletoads (2020) and the sublime TURTs nerdgasm Shredder's Revenge (2022). As we go through the history of how these were made, by surprisingly small teams with focus on sound design, music, rhythm and variety a picture is formed of a creative ethic. They're also colossal fun!  That is until you hit the North American release of Streets of Rage 3 (1994) which becomes a nightmare slog. We explain what went so horribly wrong there. But you can skip right past that one and move on to the pinnacle of not only the series but the genre; the modern-day masterpiece that is Streets of Rage 4 (2020).

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1991's Eye of the Beholder, from Westwood Studios and published by Strategic Simulations Inc. We set the game in its time before exploring its primary mechanics and the feel of being in this world. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: First level or two Issues covered: knowing who the evil is, tactical top down Gold Box, the opening cutscene, being amazed at how much they get into the Game Boy version of a Metroid game, lots of movie tie-ins, a wide variety of machines, lack of automap, being everything one wanted for a Forgotten Realms nerd, one of the ten games, semi real-time, living inside the depths of Waterdeep, a style of play which continues today, having to rest immediately, gaining information through audio, uncovering the whole map vs racing towards the goal, tournament play, losing is fun, the only way out is through, annotating a later map, interacting with the play space, accessibility and the mouse, contextualization and abstraction in game design, having to throw weapons in the world, how cool the audio is, using items to locate yourself, creating a party, crunchy spells, shout-outs to upcoming work, difficulty in the bosses in Metroid games then and now, games influencing games, getting the green light, justifying the game via the sweet spot of trends, why not just make this a Star Wars game, how green lighting changes with bigger franchises, games that changed our perspectives. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Gold Box games, Westwood Studios, Dune 2, A Link to the Past, Super Castlevania IV, SNES, Mega Man 4, Final Fantasy IV, Metroid II: Return of Samus (and Metroid series), Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega Genesis, Battletoads, Rare, Stamper Bros, Civilization, Another World, Space Quest IV, Monkey Island 2, Wing Commander 2, Hudson Hawk, Terminator 2, American Gladiators, Hunt for Red October, The Godfather, Amiga, PC-98, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Apple ][, Spectrum ZX, Amstrad, Questron, Disney, Legend of Kyrandia, Command and Conquer (series), Electronic Arts, Earth and Beyond, Louis Castle, Brett Sperry, Strategic Simulations Incorporated, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Pool of Radiance, The Ruins of Myth Drannor, Ultima (series), Wizardry (series), A Bard's Tale (series), Ultima Underworld, Dungeon Master, Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest (series), Diablo, Wasteland, Temple of Elemental Evil, Legend of Grimrock, Etrian Odyssey (series), The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, The Tomb of Horrors, Infocom, Ocarina of Time, Rogue, Deluxe Paint, Baldur's Gate, Jarkko Sivula, Single Malt Apocalypse, Sierra, LucasArts, Wierd Tales, Amazing Stories, Tintin, Pippin Barr, David Wolinsky, Game Thing, The Stuff Games Are Made Of, Walker, Dark Souls, Nintendo, Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, Johnny Pockets, Mad Max, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, Republic Commando, Sam and Max: Freelance Police, Bounty Hunter, RTX Red Rock, Gladius, PlayStation, Tomb Raider (series), Halo: Infinite, Quake, MYST, Lode Runner, Sabotage, Robotron 2084, Joust, Dark Forces, WoW Classic, Everquest, MUD, Ultima Online, Meridian 59, Adventure, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.
